Nissan has officially launched a new hybrid variant of the current-generation T32 X-Trail in for the Thai market at the ongoing Thai Motor Expo 2015 in Muang Thong Thani.

The new 2.0-litre X-Trail petrol hybrid joins the 2.0- and 2.5-litre petrol versions that feature similar specifications to the ones we get in Malaysia. It merges the 2.0-litre model’s MR20DD petrol direct injection engine with a synchronous electric motor sitting between the petrol mill and its X-Tronic CVT.

xtrail 2

Outputs of the petrol engine are identical to the regular 2.0-litre model’s 142hp and 200Nm, but boosted by the electric motor’s 40hp/160Nm contribution, the X-Trail Hybrid enjoys a net system output of 177hp, just about shading the 2.5-litre model’s 169hp.

A lithium-ion traction battery supplies power to the electric motor. Packaging requirements of the battery mean that the X-Trail Hybrid is not available as a seven-seater as currently offered in regular X-Trail variants in Malaysia. The Hybrid version also adds up to 70kg of weight over the regular 2.0-litre model.

Also on display by Nissan at the Expo is the current-generation B17 Sylphy which, in addition to the 1.8-litre model that we are familiar with in Malaysia, is also offered with a choice between two 1.6-litre engines – naturally-aspirated and turbocharged.

The NA model gets an advanced version of the HR16DE engine enhanced with dual fuel injectors and twin variable valve timing to generate outputs of 114hp and 154Nm. This engine is offered with a choice between a 5-speed manual transmission and Nissan X-Tronic CVT.

Of fascination to us is the turbocharged 1.6 DIG-T variant that features the direct injected MR16DDT producing 188hp and 240Nm, channeled to the front wheels by a CVT with six virtual ratios for manual selection.

Honda has confirmed that the BR-V will launch in the Thai market early next year. The new entry-level seven-seater crossover SUV model is currently being previewed for the Thai public at the ongoing Thai Motor Expo, which runs from 2 to 13 December 2015.

Based on underpinnings of the Mobilio MPV that is not available in Malaysia, the BR-V will slot below the HR-V in Honda’s model hierarchy. It is powered by the proven 1.5-litre SOHC i-VTEC engine that is also used in the Jazz and City, producing outputs of 117hp and 146Nm. The engine is paired with Honda’s new generation Earth Dreams CVT as standard.

brv 2

Features fitted for the Thai market include projector headlamps with LED position lights, C-shaped LED tail lights, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Its spacious interior is cooled by an automatic air-conditioning system with rear vents placed ahead of the middle-row seats.

Safety equipment includes dual frontal airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability control, and hill start assist.

We had a go in the BR-V recently in Japan, and it was indicated to us that the model is being considered for introduction in Malaysia by 2016.

Mitsubishi Motors Thailand (MMTh) has premiered a facelifted version of the Mirage with tweaks that enable its 1.2-litre A-segment hatchback to benefit from incentives under Phase II of the Thai Government’s Eco Car programme.

Produced locally in Thailand at MMTh’s Laem Chabang plant, the Mitsubishi has sold some 320,000 units of the Mirage in 93 markets worldwide since its global debut in March 2012. Its platform also spawned a sedan derivative known as the Attrage.

mirage 2

Key improvement made to the new 2016 Mirage sees fuel efficiency improved from an already-frugal 21.0 km/l to 23.8 km/l. Carbon dioxide emission is brought down to 98 g/km, dipping below the 100 g/km threshold stipulated by the Eco Car programme that qualifies the Mirage to just 14 percent duty.

Versions fitted with the INVECS-III CVT are further enhanced with idle neutral control, which automatically freewheels the transmission at a full stop, and a G-Sensor to optimize ratio selection around corners. Alternative transmission is the existing 5-speed manual.

mirage 3

Enhancements made to the 1.2-litre 3-cylinder MIVEC powerplant include carbon-coated piston rings, low friction timing chain, and multistage generation control with intelligent battery sensor – essentially a system that connects and disconnects the alternator as needed to optimize energy usage.

Alongside improved efficiency, the new Thai-spec 2016 Mirage accordingly comes with enhanced safety, which is likely due to Mitsubishi simply implementing standardized specifications with the European market. All variants will get electronic stability control and hill start assist as standard, with upper variants additionally receiving autonomous emergency braking.

mirage 4

Stylistic enhancements to the 2016 Mirage include reprofiled bumpers, revised front grille, re-sculpted bonnet, and new LED tail lights. Higher variants get bi-xenon headlamps with LED position lamps and daytime running lights.

A total of five variants of the 2016 Mirage are on offer in the Thai market, with prices ranging between THB 383,000 and 567,000, converting to RM45.2k – RM67.0k based on our current exchange rate.

mirage 5

Also on display at the Expo by MMTh is the all-new Pajero Sport. Available in 2WD and 4WD configurations, the new Pajero Sport features the same 2.4-litre 4N15 MIVEC turbodiesel powerplant as seen in the Thai-spec version of the current-generation Triton.

Fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard, the new generation Mitsubishi turbodiesel mill puts out 178hp and 430Nm as standard. Like the outgoing model, 4WD versions get Mitsubishi’s Super Select system, which is able to safely engage 4H drive mode in dry tarmac.

pajero 1

Styling-wise, the new Pajero Sport deviates significantly from the current Triton which it is based upon, featuring a completely revised front end. The rear is notable for its distinctive enlongated tail light, which clusters at the D-pillar but stretches far downward like blood dripping down a wall. We are not sure if the market will be receptive of it.

Inside, the Pajero Sport accommodates seven occupants across three rows of seats. Like its exterior, the Pajero Sport’s cabin is also a major departure from the Triton. Notably sporting a more matured-looking four-spoke steering, electronic parking brake, and a plusher selection of materials.

The annual Thailand International Motor Expo kicks off its 32nd edition today at the Impact Muangthong Thani exhibition centre in Nonthaburi. Organized by Thai media powerhouse Inter-Media Consultant Co Ltd, this year’s event carries the theme ‘New Standards… Thai Vehicles Care About the Earth.’

A sales-oriented event, this year’s expo opens to the public tomorrow and runs till 13 December, during which more than 1.5 million visitors are anticipated with participating car companies expected to collectively secure upwards of 50,000 bookings.

According to the event organizing chairman, Mr Kwanchai Paphatphong, the timing of this year’s event mean that attractive deals are in store for members of the Thai public visiting the show, as car makers seek to stimulate sales ahead of a new automotive taxation regime that is set to commence next year.

In line with the second phase of the Thai Government’s ‘Eco Car’ scheme, Thailand will move to carbon dioxide-based taxation of motor vehicles, which will see substantial reshuffling of car prices in the kingdom – reduction for low-emitting vehicles, and increase for the heavy breathers.

For example, passenger cars below 3,000cc that emit less than 150 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre will be taxed 30 percent, whilst those of the same displacement that exceed the stated threshold will be taxed 35 to 40 percent.

Crucially, ‘Eco Cars’ with rated with carbon dioxide emissions rated below 100 g/km will be taxed at just 14 percent, as opposed to 17 percent otherwise. Early benefactors of this new tax regime include the Mazda2 SkyActiv and facelifted Mitsubishi Mirage.

Moving forward, Thailand’s Pollution Control Department has firm plans to enforce Euro 6 emission standards for new cars and Euro 5 for motorcycles by 2020. Concurrently, fuel sulphur content will be lowered just 10 parts-per-million (ppm) – a reduction of five-fold from current levels.

In today’s era of downsized engines, the once-cherished idea of putting big engines in small cars to create performance derivatives seem rather last century. Why plonk in a big V8 when a turbocharged six-cylinder engine will deliver similar performance in conjunction with far superior rated fuel economy?

There is also the question of dynamic balance, particularly in the context of front-engined cars; a heavier engine contributes to a heavier nose, which in turn leads to increased tendency to understeer. A smaller lighter engine, on the other hand, has less mass resting over the front axle, contributing to keener turn-in and more agile handling.

On that backdrop, we unsurprisingly find that the AMG derivative of Mercedes-Benz’s W205 C-Class has its engine capacity slashed from 6.2 to four litres flat. Like every other performance car currently in the market, the Mercedes-AMG C 63, as it is now known as, is turbocharged too, but its motion is remarkably derived by the reciprocal motion of no less than eight pistons, as opposed to a reduced number of four or six.

c63 2

Prices & Variants

Globally, Mercedes-AMG makes two versions of its C-Class derivative, the regular C 63, or the uprated C 63 S that is offered as the vehicle’s standard specification for the Malaysian market. From the highest-specced regular C-Class, namely the C 250, it is a jump of over RM400k to meet Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s asking price of RM698,888 without insurance to have a C 63 S on the road.

For this year only but with no specific limit on number of units, customers can also order the C 63 S in Edition 1 trim which, for RM723,888, adds in various cosmetic additions inside out for an even sportier and more exclusive appearance. The package does not come with any electronic or mechanical enhancements.

We are not typically keen to endorse option packages that do not offer any function beyond aesthetics, but as an illustration of the C 63’s price competitiveness, it is worth noting that ticking the Edition 1 box lands you a car that costs less than the BMW M3 whilst offering you more horsepower.

c63 5

Specifications

Whilst the C 63 nominally occupies the same W205 platform as your neighbour’s C 200, you would expect that, having to cope with more than the triple the outputs, substantial portions of the chassis, particularly its suspension, brakes, and steering, are made from bespoke components. To start with, stopping power is enhanced with enlarged compound brake discs up front that can be optionally upgraded to carbon ceramic replacements.

Both front and rear axles of the C 63 are model-specific as well, featuring high aluminium content and sporting its own unique performance-oriented geometry and incorporating adaptive dampers. The rear wheels are aligned with higher negative camber compared to a regular C-Class, whilst the front wheels are spaced wider apart and turn upon model-specific steering knuckles.

c63 12

To better manage the deployment of outputs at the rear wheels, both versions of the C 63 get rear locking differentials, with the C 63 S variant getting an electronic-operated unit as standard. Mercedes claims that it is more sensitive and responds more rapidly than the mechanical alternative fitted in the ‘regular’ C 63. Both versions perform the same duty, however, which is to reduce slip at the inner wheel, giving the driver added confidence to power earlier out of a corner.

A sonorous engine is always the highlight of an AMG-fettled vehicle, and the C 63 looks to keep that tradition going. Despite downsizing in capacity from the predecessor, it’s still a V8, albeit one helped along with a pair of turbochargers to generate outputs of 510hp and 700Nm. Code-named M177, the 4.0-litre powertrain is closely related to the AMG GT‘s M178 V8 of the same capacity, with key difference being the C 63 utilizing wet-sump lubrication as opposed to the GT‘s dry sump.

c63 4

Exterior

Anybody looking to dress up their regular C-Class to imitate the C 63 will be faced with quite a task at hand to make a convincing job of it. Besides the various smatterings of ‘AMG’ and ‘V8 biturbo’ badges, the C 63 also wears slightly different body panels from the regular models. Light clusters are identical though.

Up front, the C 63 actually stretches 54mm further forward than a regular C-Class, whilst its fenders flare 14mm wider on each side. Besides giving the C 63 a more menacing stance and proportion, these expanded dimensions serve practical purposes, namely to accommodate the large engine both in terms of providing sheer space as well as structural reinforcements to cope with the extreme forces generated by the engine’s enhanced performance.

c63 6

In line with today’s design tastes, the rear bumper features a lower diffuser with integrated quad exhaust tips. We are less than impressed, however, that the four visible tips are actually fake and that they conceal the actual pair of pipes just behind. Fake exhaust tips, in our opinion, have no place in a Mercedes-AMG model; better, we feel, to show two honest pipes than four fake ones.

Takers of the Edition 1 package get their C 63 S fitted with even more exclusive touches such as high gloss black finish on the rear spoiler, chrome plated exhausts, red highlights on the front grille and side mirrors, unique design 19-inch alloys, and matt graphite grey side decals.

c63 17

Interior

Even in its most basic state, the W205 C-Class boasts perhaps one of the most alluring cabins of the segment, one built with a level of quality and craftsmanship that not only exceeds its peers, but outright good enough to trouble vehicles from a segment above. It is a wonderful throwback to the days when Mercedes built vehicles with a seemingly bottomless pit of money.

Built on such solid foundations of excellence, the C 63 S further raises the bar with a plethora of trim inserts and fittings that serve to highlight its position as the top dog C-Class. Indeed, with an AMG badge smack in the middle of the centre console along with carbon fibre strapped on the dashboard and instrument cluster, you’d be very hard-pressed to forget your surroundings.

For good measure, Mercedes-AMG fixes an IWC analog clock right at the heart of the dashboard to tell you the time – not strictly necessary, but in keeping with the theme of a C-Class cabin in general, it’s there just because Mercedes can. Simply put, if you like your surroundings to feel expensive, the C 63 S does a particularly good job in satisfying that requirement.

c63 3

Driving Experience

You might expect a compact sedan shoved with a V8 engine up front to offer more in the way of brute force along a straight line than delicate poise around the bends. The good news is that the C 63 S delivers on both counts and with considerable aplomb.

It may not have the clinical precision of a BMW M3, but the AMG scores very highly in the way its V8 tingle your senses on its way to the red line, as well as the deftness of its controls and the benign calibration of its handling. Rather than monster its way through apexes, the C 63 S is a car which works with you through every bend and telegraphs its intentions to you in crisp clarity through its lively steering wheel. It emboldens you to feed in the throttle and confidently power your way out of corners.

c63 7

Typical of performance-focused variants of any model, there is the inevitable compromise in comfort and rolling refinement to achieve the sharpness in response and visceral characteristics that is demanded by buyers shopping in this segment. The C 63 S notably sacrifices some pliancy in its primary ride; rebound over bumps can be harsh and you’re best advised to avoid potholes at all costs. It is a livable setup, however, and an entirely acceptable compromise for the kind of performance and handling effervescence on offer.

Delightful to exploit too, is the smoothness and linearity of the V8 engine’s power delivery; allied with the bang-on calibration of its 7-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission, acceleration can be as brutal or as silky smooth as you dictate with a flick of your right foot. Its richness of mid-range torque mean that even in its softer driving modes effortless progress is always at your disposal. Such flexibility makes its case as a viable day-to-day vehicle.

c63 8

Verdict

Accessible performance. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S offers a lot without asking for too much in return. Even with the Edition 1 option ticked, the C 63 S undercuts both the BMW M3/M4 twins and the Lexus RC F by considerable margins whilst handsomely thumping the outputs of both. Even if its clientele are not made up of cash-strapped individuals, value for money is still a significant factor of purchase in this segment, and Mercedes is offering precisely that here.

Having said that, the appeal of an AMG-badged Mercedes has to extend beyond monetary terms; what the C 63 does very well is to harness its full performance potential and allow it to be enjoyed by a wider spectrum of drivers and over a greater variety of circumstances. It is easy enough to plonk a big engine into a small car and make it go very fast along a straight line. Instilling a finely-poised balanced and composure to go with that performance, that’s the higher art, and that’s precisely what the C 63 offers.

The second-generation model of Audi’s flagship SUV, the Q7, makes its official entry to Malaysia having just only hit European markets this summer. Like its predecessor, the new Q7’s MLB Evo platform will also go on to underpin next-generation models of the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne. The same hardware also features in Bentley’s new Bentayga flagship SUV.

First introduced in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the original Q7 was built on the VW Group’s PL71 platform shared with the first generation Touareg and Cayenne that were both launched in 2002. But whilst the Touareg and Cayenne had both advanced to second generation models in 2011, the Q7 continued in its original guise until this new version debuted globally this year.

q7 2

In typical Audi fashion, the Q7 embraces evolutionary design changes from the previous model, but implementing the latest styling cues of the Audi brand, such as the Singleframe grille as well as distinctive LED headlights with signature daytime running lights. Stylistically, the new Q7 appears sleeker and less bulky than its predecessor. There’s a good reason for this though, and it is because the Q7 has actually become smaller than before.

Measuring 5,052mm long, 1,968mm wide, and 1,740m tall, the new Q7 actually sports reduced external dimensions over its predecessor, shrinking in length, wheelbase, and width, but growing in height. More importantly to note, perhaps, is the considerable reduction in mass of some 325kg from its predecessor, achieved with the extensive usage of advanced lightweight materials in its body construction. To give the figure some context, 325kg is the weight of a baby grand piano.

q7 4

Globally available with a choice between five- and seven-seater configurations, the Q7 is nevertheless specced exclusively as a seven-seater for the Malaysian market. Each of the five seats in the second and third row are individually foldable, allowing cargo space to vary from 770 to 1,955 litres depending on arrangement. For added convenience, the two third row seats are folded by electric operation.

Up front, the Q7’s clean, minimalist dashboard houses Audi’s advanced MMI navigation plus infotainment system with a virtual instrument cluster for the driver, along with an 8.3-inch retractable centre screen and touch panel on the centre console to provide the front passenger access to various in-car systems. Audio is delivered by a Bose 3D sound system with 15-channel amplifier sending 558 watts of output through 19 speakers.

In the engine room sits the latest generation of Audi’s 3.0-litre TFSI V6 petrol engine which combines direct and port fuel injection to achieve the best benefits of both fuel systems. Mated with ZF’s 8HP automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual control, the supercharged six-pot pumps improved outputs 333hp and 440Nm, up from the predecessor’s 272hp and 400Nm.

On the road, the increase in outputs translates to a 1.6-second reduction in its century sprint time to just 6.3 seconds and top end performance that requires electronic intervention to cap the Q7’s top speed to 250kph. Improved efficiency and the aforementioned weight reduction, meanwhile, help contribute to improved fuel consumption, rated at 7.9 l/100km in the combined cycle and CO2 emissions at 183 g/km.

q7 3

Drive traction in the Q7 is delivered permanently to all four wheels, its crown gear-based quattro all-wheel drive system able to apportion as much as 70 percent of the engine’s torque to the front or 85 percent astern, depending on situation. In normal conditions, the Q7 drives with 60 percent of drive going to its rear wheels.

Also standard in the Q7 is all-round adjustable air suspension, that is able to raise Q7’s drive height by as much as 60mm in Offroad driving mode. Additionally, the suspension is also able to facilitate a convenient loading mode by lowering only the rear axle by 45mm.

Available at all authorized Audi dealerships immediately, the all-new Q7 3.0 TFSI quattro is priced from RM589,900 inclusive of on-road costs, GST, but not insurance.
