As the popularity of SUVs seem to show unceasing growth, Bentley has appropriately made a bid to cash in at the market’s top end with its all-new Bentayga, a vehicle defined as being the world’s fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV.

Designed and engineered at the brand’s historic Crewe headquarters, the Bentayga is powered by an all-new 6.0-litre W12 engine boosted with twin turbocharging and an advanced dual fuel injection system. Auto start/stop and cylinder deactivation are also incorporated to maximize efficiency.

206939104555ef02600403a

With outputs of 600hp and 900Nm sent to all fours via ZF’s renowned 8HP automatic transmission, the two-tonne-plus Bentayga needs just 4.1 seconds to complete the century sprint and maxes out at a top speed of 301kph. Bentley has additionally confirmed that diesel and hybrid powertrains will be added to the range in the future.

Unlike its former sister brand Rolls-Royce, Bentley has fewer qualms sharing components with less exclusive brands of the Volkswagen Group. Besides its W12 engine, which will eventually make its way to higher end Audis, the Bentayga is also underpinned by an advanced iteration of the Group’s MLB platform. To our eyes, the Bentayga’s rear three-quarters strikes more than a passing similarity with that of a Touareg.

213678483655ef02cfd4348

Whilst luxury is kept as a primary focus in the Bentayga’s development, Bentley claims to have honed its underpinnings to withstand severe offroading duties. A rigourous testing programme has taken prototypes of the Bentayga to extreme conditions ranging from the dirt and gravel, to sand dunes, muddy fields, and temperatures ranging from -30°C to 50°C. The vehicle has also seen 400 laps around the Nurburgring to develop its chassis dynamics and fine tune its various electronic driver aids.

Helping to enhance the Bentayga’s handling is what Bentley claims to be the world’s first electric active roll control technology powered by a 48V electrical system to instantly counteract lateral rolling forces when cornering. According to Bentley, this adaptive and reactive system provides variable torsional resistance, consistently creating an optimum balance of dynamic handling and ride comfort. The 48V electrical system results in silent, instantaneous responses and sufficient power on hand to deal with all road surfaces.

?????????????????????????

As with all Bentleys, the Bentayga comes with multi-mode air suspension. The Bentayga driver has four different modes to choose from: High 2, High 1, Normal and Low. High 2, for example, can be manually selected when tackling more severe off-road surfaces. Customers can also lower the rear suspension via a switch in the boot, to ease loading and trailer hitching.

Inside, the Bentayga’s luxurious cabin can be optioned in four- or five-seater configuration and offered with a choice of 15 colours including mono- and dual-tone colour splits. In four-seater configuration, the two individual rear seats adjust in 18 different ways and include massage and ventilation functions as well as footrests.

9297222455ef2cf84c5d2

Appropriate for a brand of Bentley’s ultra-luxurious aspirations, the Bentayga is offered with a wide range of personalisation options start from a standard palette of 17 exterior paint colours, with up to 90 hues available in the extended range. Six lifestyle-oriented specification packages will be available from launch, including two styling packs.

Those with the most discerning of tastes can have their vehicles further customized by Mulliner, which offer options as bespoke as an exquisite integrated Mulliner Hamper Set, complete with refrigerator, bespoke fine Linley china cutlery, crockery and crystal glass, and storage area for dry goods. A bespoke mechanical Mulliner Tourbillon by Breitling clock can also be specified. The Bentayga will make its full public debut at the IAA Frankfurt Show from 15 to 27 September. Customer deliveries commence in early 2016.

The second stratos of Rolls-Royce’s model range, aimed at buyers younger than the typical Phantom owners, consisting of the Ghost sedan and Wraith coupe receives a convertible addition to its line-up. Reviving a rare name last used by the brand in the 1950s, the all-new Rolls-Royce Dawn makes its global debut ahead of its scheduled first public appearance at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show later this month.

Laid out in a 2+2-seater configuration, Rolls-Royce claims that the Dawn is a no-compromise convertible, one packaged with style and grace, but without impeding passenger space or sacrificing the refinement and grace expected of a Rolls-Royce. Fitted with a soft top, Dawn is conceived to be driven by its owner and it is designed to accommodate four occupants in first-class comfort.

55e92f5147221

Contrary to widespread speculation, Rolls-Royce insists that the Dawn is not simply a convertible version of the Wraith. Whilst it is obvious that the Wraith served as the engineering basis from which the Dawn was derived, Rolls-Royce points out that the two models share less than 20 percent of their bodywork, making the Dawn a sufficiently unique vehicle on its own. Compared to the Wraith, Dawn’s grille is recessed by some 45mm whilst the lower part of its front bumper protrudes 53mm further forward.

For aesthetic reasons, Rolls-Royce had insisted right from the start that a soft top will be the only appropriate solution for the Dawn’s convertible roof. The engineering team’s relentless pursuit in eliminating noise in the face of this constraint has yielded a coupe which Rolls-Royce claims to be as quiet as the Wraith on the move. Additionally, the roof’s ‘Silent Ballet’ powered mechanism, operable on the move at speeds up to 50kph, is able to open and close the soft top in just 22 seconds without making a single decibel of noise.

55e92cdf8a7ea

Still on the topic of sound, Dawn is fitted with Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke Audio system that is specially calibrated for its unique configuration. Fitted with sixteen individually-tuned speakers, the system continuously monitors ambient exterior noise and subtly adjusts speaker output to compensate, delivering seemingly consistent audio at all times.

Inside, the Dawn is finished in a sea of the highest class materials one can find anywhere in the automotive industry. Occupants are cosseted in four individual seats, and there is enough space that rear passengers can stand up and disembark through its unique rear-hinged coach doors.

At the heart of things is the familiar twin turbocharged 6.6-litre V12 seen across the Rolls-Royce range this time tuned to outputs of 563hp and 780Nm, more conservative than the Wraith’s 624hp and 800Nm setup. Hooked to the engine is ZF’s 8HP automatic transmission with satellite-aided shifting as standard.

The venerable Proton Persona, launched in 2007, continues to be a popular choice of vehicle among Malaysians with Proton having announced that production is being increased at its Tanjung Malim plant to cope with steadily increasing bookings.

According to a statement issued by the company, production was briefly halted to facilitate refurbishments and upgrades to the Persona line, resulting in a backlog of bookings accumulating during that period.

“The sedan car segment has shown significant growth over the years and group of buyers have expanded from the traditional family to the young and professionals. Based on market feedback, we found that there is a steady demand for this type of sedan. Reflecting this demand, we are ramping up our production to meet the growing numbers after assembly of Persona was halted due to refurbishment activities,” said Dato’ Abdul Harith Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton.

“As we see a steady demand in numbers for locally made cars due to the drop in our Ringgit, we’re pleased that more and more Malaysians choose Persona as their preferred car due to its spacious size, moderate fuel consumption and low maintenance cost,” continued Dato’ Harith.

Powered by 1.6-litre Campro IAFM engine, the Persona is available in two variants – Persona Super Value (SV) and Persona Executive, priced from RM44,658. Both variants are offered with choices between manual and automatic transmissions.

At present, Proton has increased dealer stocks nationwide, with waiting period for the Persona currently standing at one month. To date, Proton has sold a cumulative total of 265,882 Personas since the model’s launch eight years ago.

Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP), the importer of Porsche vehicles in Malaysia, has launched the new 911 GT3 RS at the Sepang International Circuit in conjunction with the ninth and tenth rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2015 that is part of the programme of this weekend’s Asian Festival of Speed 2015 event.

First premiered at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show, the new 911 GT3 RS is in essence a race car made street legal, incorporating the maximum possible degree of motorsport technology without sacrificing everyday driveability. Extensive modifications have been made to its drive system, aerodynamics and lightweight design to enhance performance even further from the 911 GT3. According to Porsche, the 911 GT3 RS’ Nurburgring North Loop time of seven minutes and 20 seconds is a full nine seconds faster than the firms own Carrera GT super car.

rs 2

“The 911 GT3 RS models have always stood for top sportiness and emotional appeal. Its direct correlation with motorsports makes possible uncompromising driving dynamics and an intensive driving experience. Never before has a “GT street vehicle” been closer to its Cup and RSR cousins, both visually and functionally,” said Arnt Bayer, Chief Executive Officer of SDAP.

Powering the 911 GT3 RS is a 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine – the largest displacement in the 911 model range and most powerful among naturally aspirated versions – with 500hp of power and 460Nm of torque, channeled to the road by a specially developed PDK dual clutch transmission. Performance stats read: zero to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and to 200 km/h in 10.9 seconds. Its combined NEDC fuel consumption is 12.7 l/100 km. It comes with a number of track-optimized functions such as the ability to disengage the clutch on the move and speed limiting by the Pit Speed button.

rs 3

Light weight materials feature extensively in the GT3 RS’ construction, including magnesium for its roof and carbon fibre for the engine and luggage compartment lids. This helped shave around 10 kg of weight from the already lightened 911 GT3. An additional benefit of the lightweight roof is that it lowers the vehicle’s centre of gravity for improved lateral dynamics. Main body shell comes from the 911 Turbo, but tacked on with RS-specific aerodynamic add-on parts. The front spoiler lip, which extends nearly to the road, and the large rear wing reinforce its dominant look.

A 30cm wide recess extends centrally over the CRFP bonnet and the magnesium roof. This feature is a stylistic reference to the recess on the luggage compartment lid of the classic 911 models with air-cooled engines, and today it identifies the two largest lightweight components in the 911 GT3 RS. Another characteristic is the unique front wheel arch air vents that extend into the upper section of the wings – just as in purebred motorsport cars. This increases downforce at the front axle.

rs 4

The chassis of the 911 GT3 RS has been tuned for maximum driving dynamics and precision. Rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus with fully variable rear axle differential lock increase agility and dynamics, and the wider front and rear track widths enable even better roll stability than in the 911 GT3. In addition, the 911 GT3 RS comes with the widest tyres of any 911 model as standard. The results: even more agile turn-in characteristics and even higher cornering speeds.

The interior design of the 911 GT3 RS with Alcantara elements is based on the current 911 GT3. One key new feature is the full bucket seats, which are based on the carbon bucket seats of the 918 Spyder. Other standard features are the Club Sport Package with a bolted-on roll cage behind the front seats, preparation for a battery master switch, and separately provided six-point safety harness for the driver and fire extinguisher with mounting bracket.

rs 5

The optional Sport Chrono Package, which features – in addition to its integrated timers – the Porsche Track Precision app for a smartphone. The Track Precision app can be used to have lap times automatically measured via GPS, and to log data on a smartphone for many driving parameters such as vehicle speed, lateral acceleration as well as acceleration and deceleration in the driving direction. It manages this data and lets the driver share and compare it with other drivers.

The base price for the new 911 GT3 RS starts from RM 1,750,000 which includes a 4-year factory warranty. The price stated includes all applicable duties but excludes registration fee, road tax and insurance. Specifications and prices are subject to change without prior notice.

What is the pinnacle of automotive engineering? To enthusiasts, the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini often come to mind, or even more left-field no-holds-barred makers such as Pagani or Koenigsegg. Look away performance mountain however, there is another peak to scale, namely that of sheer unrivaled luxury.

It is a peak that Rolls-Royce has occupied for years and have never met any other car maker that comes quite close to its own dedication to perfection. In other words, there are no shortage of car makers, big and small, each with its own subtle nuances, that offer their take on delivering the ultimate in sporty driving performance; but the ultimate in opulence? No one does it like Rolls-Royce.

wraith 2

Following its messy divorce from Bentley in the protracted takeover battle between Volkswagen and BMW, present-day Rolls-Royce models have no connection to their forebears beyond their names. Engineering patents that underpinned Rolls-Royce models of the 20th century now belong to the VW Group. From the Phantom in 2003, every new Rolls-Royce model have been scratch developments by Goodwood but christened by names with steep traditions in the brand’s history.

The Wraith, for example, revives a name first used in 1938, and today it identifies a two-door coupe that is claimed to offer the most dynamic and involving driving experience in Rolls-Royce’s century-long history. It is also claimed to offer this dynamism without sacrificing the unrivaled style and grace innate to every Rolls-Royce.

wraith 3

Specifications

As the cliche goes, if you have to ask the question of price, chances are it’s because you won’t be able to afford it. Still, in the interest of a complete review, we shall disclose that you’ll need close to RM3 million to your name before you can get your hands on one of these, and that’s just for starters. If, like more than 80 percent of Rolls-Royce buyers, you decide to go berserk on Bespoke customization options, you could well double the purchase price.

If you’re wondering what sort of options are on offer, the answer is whatever you can think of. Most of these relate to selection materials and colours on the bodywork and cabin. There is the famous starry-night sky option which lines the roof with thousands of LEDs to simulate the appearance of stars at night. If you want those stars to resemble, say, your favourite constellation, Rolls-Royce will have that sorted out for you. Your wishes can be as elaborate or as fickle as you wish, so long as you’re willing to meet the asking price.

wraith 4

Buried deep inside its veneer of luxury is an extensive redevelopment of the same platform that also underpins the Ghost. It is based only very loosely on the architecture that underpins the BMW 7 Series; Rolls-Royce claims that no more than 20 percent of the Wraith’s components are common with mainstream BMW products. Most notable shared component is the ZF 8HP automatic transmission, which incorporates satellite-aided shifting in its control software.

Pumping power into the transmission to be sent astern is a 6.6-litre V12 that nominally shares its architecture with BMW’s 6.0-litre N74 engine powering the outgoing F01 760i. Lined with Rolls-Royce-specific internals, the twin-turbocharged direct injection powerplant churns out a muscular 624hp and 800Nm, enabling a 4.6-second century sprint at full pelt. Claimed consumption on the combined cycle is 14.0 l/100km – Rolls-Royce Kuala Lumpur personnel claim to have seen averages as low as 13.0 l/100km on the trip computer when driven gently enough.

wraith 5

Exterior

Despite not having any engineering links to olden day Rollers, it is difficult to accuse the new BMW-led administration of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars as being unfaithful to the brand’s heritage. The Phantom, Ghost, and now Wraith all uncannily carry that unmistakable Rolls-Royce look with all the relevant design cues present and accounted for.

The Wraith’s bodystyle follows a fastback configuration, which describes a very specific variation of the two-door coupe with C-pillars that slope gently all the way to the vehicle’s rear edge. American muscle cars are perhaps the most famous genre of vehicles that wear this shape, although Rolls-Royce might not be particularly enamoured at the relatively blue collar comparison here.

wraith 6

A uniquely distinguishing design feature of the Wraith is its pair of rear-hinged doors. From the outside, they are opened and closed manually; from the inside, however, they are closed at the press of buttons situated at the bases of both A-pillars. More than just a luxury, this feature is an ergonomic necessity simply because the door handles are beyond easy reach of the occupants when the doors are fully opened.

Although our test vehicle pictured in this review wears a monotone Diamond Black colour, the Wraith’s bodywork is in fact sculpted with two-tone paint jobs in mind, a feature which Rolls-Royce claims to hint at a nautical theme. Even its rims, sizes ranging between 20- and 21-inches, are offered with bi-colour options.

wraith 7

Interior

With an overall length just short of 5.3 metres, the Wraith’s dimensions eclipse the latest BMW 7 Series even in the latter’s long wheelbase configuration. Its 3,295mm wheelbase is also a good 85mm longer than that of the lengthened variant of Munich’s flagship. Those generous dimensions were put to good use to create the kind of roominess one would not expect of a two-door vehicle, Rolls-Royce or otherwise.

Despite having access to the vast parts bin of the BMW Group, Rolls-Royce is mindful to avoid giving its customers a glitzy rebadge of the 7 Series. The only overt connection to a mainstream BMW product you’ll find the Wraith’s cabin is BMW’s iDrive infotainment appropriately clothed in a more expensive rotary knob and different-looking screen wallpaper – the system’s actual functionality is no different from what you would find in a regular BMW, but that’s no criticism in this case.

wraith 11

Overall control layout of the Wraith is one that seemingly errs in the direction of minimalism. Quintessential Rolls-Royce quirks such as the ‘Power Reserve’ meter in place of the usual rev counter and various very expensive looking switch gear dominate the cabin to create an atmosphere that is nothing less than sheer opulence. It is a cabin that looks and feels appropriately unique, but underneath that veneer of luxury is a a subtle yet unmistakable BMW influence in its control layout – making it simple, intuitive, and easy to use.

There is no need for us to elaborate on aspects such as material selection and build quality. It’s a Rolls-Royce, handbuilt by some of the best craftsmen in the business: it’s therefore very good, and you can take our word for that. If we really must have one criticism of the cabin, we will gripe that the signal and wiper stalks are obscured by the spokes of the steering wheel.

wraith 16

Driving Experience

Whilst this may be the most dynamic and most powerful vehicle Rolls-Royce ever built, the Wraith is not the car for you if you’re the type that expect high performance to be accompanied by a corresponding dose of showmanship. What the Wraith does very well instead, is delivering its performance in a refined and cultured manner that is noteworthy for being utterly lacking in drama and fuss.

Rather than hammer you with a hard-hitting punch, the Wraith builds up speed with a steady and relentless head of steam. On our one-day drive session from Petaling Jaya to Port Dickson, we never saw the need to push the pointer of the Power Reserve meter to anywhere near 60 percent. Most of the time, we hardly needed more than 20 percent of the engine’s reserves, and even that was more than enough to push all two and a half tonnes of metal and human to less than legal speeds.

wraith 8

We often lament at cars that fail to engage us with chatter and feedback, but such an accusation would seem churlish if applied to Rolls-Royce, considering the fact that the company made its name in, among other things, isolating external disturbances from its occupants. A Rolls-Royce sets out to eliminate sensations from the outside; if we blame it for exuding a sense of detachment, we are then blaming it for being effective at its job, one that it charges a hell of a lot of money for doing.

At low speeds, the Wraith’s steering is dialed with a very generous degree of power assist, to the point where it feels almost unnatural for its size. It does weigh up at speed, however, and you definitely feel more of the road through your finger tips compared to, say, the Ghost, but not quite Toyota 86 or Mazda MX-5 levels of chatter.

Don’t mistake a lack of engagement on the Wraith’s part for incompetent handling, although one still needs to be mindful of limitations imposed by the laws of physics when executing changes of direction. Feed your throttle and inputs in measured fashion, and the car shall reward you with accordingly smooth transitions. Remember that this is a car engineered not for adrenaline-inducing action but rather for effortless delivery of performance.

wraith 20

Conclusion

Whilst the prevalent idea of a Rolls-Royce is that of a chauffeur-driven vehicle, the concept of a two-door coupe is not exactly breaking new ground for the brand, claims of ‘most dynamic Rolls-Royce ever’ not withstanding. There is the Phantom Coupe that still remains on sale and in its pre-BMW past life, there were the Camargue and Corniche that sought to put their owners at the driver’s seat a little bit more often.

To bring out a common cliche in our circles, the Wraith is made with far greater emphasis to ‘driver focus’ than its stablemates, but enclosed within the caveat that core tenets of the Rolls-Royce brand, which is to carry itself with effortless grace and understated elegance. Indeed, effortless pretty much sums up the entire driving experience – the Wraith is a very fast car, but works to make that speed easy to access yet imperceptible on the move.
