BMW Group Malaysia is preparing its aftersales workforce for a future where EVs (electric vehicles) roam. More than just selling EVs and enabling the growth of a charging infrastructure network, the group needs to ready itself with a highly skilled set of technicians to take care of these cars.

BMW_DC Fast Charging_iX_EVAs such, it has introduced the internationally recognised BMW High Voltage Expert Certification to enhance its pool of skilled technicians. Cultivating highly skilled experts in the field of Electric Mobility will complement the uptake of electromobility.

The BMW High Voltage Expert is a specialised talent who is qualified to work on BMW electric vehicles. This programme is conducted at the BMW Group Regional Training Centre in Malaysia, and a certified a BMW High Voltage Expert is allowed to handle the servicing and repair of the most advanced BMW i vehicles worldwide.

BMW Group Malaysia_EV-ready workforce_BMW High Voltage Expert CertificationTo qualify as a BMW High Voltage Expert, the prospect must already be an existing BMW High Voltage Technician. The person must first undergo a pre-selection process which includes a knowledge assessment and an interview. The prospect would also need to obtain first aid certification and undergo a full body check-up. After which, they are put through 15 days of intensive training, with the requirement of passing 2 theory  exams and 4 practical exams to proceed to the next stage. This is then followed by a final theory exam and  practical demonstration under live high voltage to secure the certification which is completed in another 10 days.

BMW Group Malaysia_High Voltage Expert Certification“At the BMW Group, we have always believed that the future is Electric. Since BMW Group Malaysia first  introduced BMW i to the country back in 2015, we have envisioned a Malaysia where electric mobility is fully  embraced and have been working hard to that end. We understood the obstacles faced by Malaysians in  adopting EVs, such as range anxiety, which we have been alleviating by rolling out EV infrastructure across the country. At the same time, service and repair are also important points of consideration, ensuring that  BMW i owners have greater peace of mind when it comes to the ownership of their BMW electric vehicles,” said Hans de Visser, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.

“As such, the need for qualified experts in the field of Electric Mobility with the support of our network of  dealership is crucial to our preparation for electrification and introduction of BMW i in the country. We remain committed to nurturing more local talents with high-level expertise that are recognised internationally,” he added.

For BMW Group Malaysia, the BMW High Voltage Expert Certification is an important pillar in supporting the development of a mature ecosystem in Malaysia where EVs can thrive. As more BMW i vehicles are being introduced on Malaysian roads, greater accessibility to BMW certified experts ensures that the Premium Electric Ownership Experience is met at the highest standards for all owners of BMW i vehicles.

As demand for its D-Max pickup truck picks up, Isuzu Malaysia is expecting to set a new sales record this year. In the past 6 months (Jan – Jun), Isuzu saw 4,237 new registrations for the D-Max. This is a 143% jump over the same period in 2021. Incidentally, this half-year performance is only slightly below the sales achievement for all of 2021 (4,601 vehicles).

Isuzu Malaysia_Shunsuke Okazoe, CEOThe Isuzu D-Max was introduced with updated and extra features for the range-topping X-Terrain variant recently in June. Thus, the company is expecting interest in its flagship pickup to climb. “Since the introduction of the all-new Isuzu D-Max, we have seen a growing interest in pick-up truck usage, particularly from first-time buyers and upgraders who have been impressed by the way the new D-Max has blurred the lines between a tough and capable pick-up truck and the comfort and sophistication of a family saloon,” said Isuzu Malaysia Chief Executive Officer, Shunsuke Okazoe.

With this 3rd generation D-Max, the Japanese truck brand had redefined the way pickup trucks look, feel and perform. From its hard-working Single Cab model to the sophisticated and feature-packed top-of-the-line X-Terrain variant, Isuzu has been able to engineer greater capabilities into its trucks while refining the comfort, safety levels as well as driving pleasure.

Isuzu_1.9 Blue Power_Diesel Engine_RZ4ESignificantly, the introduction of the 1.9L Blue Power engine to the D-Max line-up increased the pickup’s popularity. With its remarkable engine performance, great fuel efficiency, strong reliability, and the lowest road tax in the market, the 1.9L variants have become the most popular choice among Malaysian buyers, making up nearly 80% of Isuzu’s total sales.

Meanwhile, the flagship D-Max X-Terrain makes up about 10% of total sales volume. This is still a significant achievement for Isuzu, considering that it has never had a strong offering within the lifestyle segment as it used to mainly focus on providing dependable workhorses.Isuzu D-Max_X-Terrain_Front_Rear

Isuzu D-Max Auto Plus_Kenkichi SogoHowever, Isuzu now has a strong contender in the lifestyle segment that offers premium comfort, refinement as well as safety features in a desirable package. “The X-Terrain has gained a strong following particularly among urban users. Many have found the vehicle to be the ideal extension of their lifestyle activities offering the ideal balance of space, capability, comfort and safety. With the recent updates made to the X-Terrain including the new colours, welcome light, scuff plates, wireless Qi charger and Around View Monitor, it is even more desirable vehicle that allows owners to do more without boundaries,” added Chief Operating Officer, Kenkichi Sogo.

Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain_Around View Monitor_Dashboard_SteeringThe Isuzu D-Max is the brand’s sole passenger / non-commercial vehicle offering and comes in 8 variants to suit different needs and budgets. Most of the range offers 4×4 capability, with a sole 4×2 automatic variant available, to provide long-distance travellers and urban users the flexibility and versatility while enjoying lower running costs.

If you think you have no choice but to drive to and within the city, think again. Services like Beam Mobility are offering an alternative mode of transport that is convenient and ecologically more sustainable. The Beam e-scooters are a practical last mile commute for urban folk. And it’s not just for those who use public transport (i.e. MRT / LRT / buses), but for those who want to, or need to, travel a little further for lunch, or attend a meeting but don’t want to break out in sweat from walking. It also beats having to drive that little distance and save you from congestion as well as the hassle of looking for (and paying) parking.Beam e-scooters_Last Mile Connectivity

Through its “Drive Something New Today” campaign, Beam Mobility is setting out to educate consumers on this alternative form of urban transport. The campaign will set out to demonstrate the key role its shared e-scooter service plays in solving the everyday issue of completing first and last mile journeys, especially with using public transport.

Beam Mobility_E-scooters_MRT StationBeam has a mission to turn little drives into better rides, and make cities flow better for everyone. The e-scooters serve to fill a gap in the public transportation system by connecting people to transit points, popular destinations, and hot spots with ease and convenience. Though the bus service in the Klang Valley has improved in the last few years, and has become more predictable, there is still a way to go. Beam hopes to fill in such gaps and help to increase the use of public transport, and is not meant to be a substitute for public transportation.

The Beam e-scooter complements the existing public transport ecosystem for single-person travel within the city. As an example, your destination may only be a 10-minute ride on the e-scooter, but the bus doesn’t depart from the station for another 15 minutes. Thus, the Beam service becomes a convenient, more efficient way to travel. It is also a healthier way to move around, where the environment is concerned (you don’t have to do much other than ride in a proper manner). For every 10 km ridden on a Beam instead of a car, you can reduce 2.65 kg of CO2 emissions. Replacing a car with an e-scooter for short commutes can also effectively reduce congestion on the roads.

In a recent poll among micromobility riders in May 2022, almost 50% of the 1,800 Beam riders surveyed said that access to e-scooters for the “first or last mile” of a journey had made them more likely or much more likely to consider using public transport as an option for long journeys rather than using cars or ride-hailing services. This attitude flows into real behaviours as 77% of regular riders saying they always, usually, or sometimes use an e-scooter to connect to or from public transport.

E-scooter_Beam Mobility“Beam’s e-scooters are built for convenience and to encourage people to opt for greener commutes within the city centre. With its growing availability in key transit points and destinations around the Klang Valley, the ability to quickly hop on and off an e-scooter to travel door-to-door in minutes gives Malaysians an easy and convenient solution to the first and last mile challenges of public transport usage. Moving between places that are too far for a comfortable walk, and too short a distance to drive, is solved with our e-scooters,” said Taty Azman, Head of Public Affairs, Beam Mobility Malaysia.

The surveys also illustrate how open people in Malaysian cities are to shared e-scooter services operating in their cities. Only about 9% of the 1,544 citizens surveyed said they felt some degree of negativity to the idea. This number halved once the safety features, convenience, and environmental benefits of shared e-scooters were explained to them.

Safety is a top priority for Beam, with the company deeply invested in the safety technology of its e-scooters. Underneath the Beam e-scooter’s sturdy aircraft-grade aluminium chassis is an efficient electric powertrain and a high-grade IoT (Internet of Things) communications device which works to ensure its riders’ safety and responsible operation. This enables features such as Beam’s proprietary virtual parking technology, which encourages proper use and return of e-scooters, while its speed-limiting technology (capped at 25km/h) keeps users from going too fast, even when riding downhill.

Beam Mobility_E-scooter_InstructorFurthermore, Beam e-scooters are equipped with geofencing technology to ensure its e-scooter riders stay within designated areas approved by local councils and regulators for micromobility vehicle use. This not only ensures the safety of the riders, but also pedestrians, and road vehicles. This also gives Beam the ability to identify inappropriate usage or placement of its scooters so that it can be rectified immediately. Additionally, the Beam e-scooters are fitted with batteries that are certified for fire safety.

Beam’s commitment to safety goes a step further with the mobility provider’s in-person flagship safety programme called the Beam Safe Academy. Meticulously curated and conducted by Beam’s certified instructors, the programme educates attendees on proper e-scooter usage such as safe parking methods, good riding habits, and local micro mobility laws. This looks to ensure the safety of not only Beam’s riders, but also for pedestrians and other vehicles around them.

“The added mobility of using a Beam e-scooter not only completes the first and last mile of a user’s journey, it is also a great way for one to explore the sights of a city as well. With Beam, and leaving your car behind, exploring your city becomes more accessible and convenient. It’s great for users whether you’re a local or tourist, and great for local businesses as well,” added Taty.

In addition, the Beam Booster programme is a platform that highlights local businesses through Beam’s proprietary virtual parking technology. This programme encourages Beam riders to make a pit-stop or end their journey in front of a Beam partner’s doorstep, thus generating interest and possible revenue for their business.Beam Booster_MyHub Kopi House_E-scooter

Aside from improving public transport connectivity and generating footfall for local businesses, Beam provides employment opportunities in the gig economy, in line with the 12th Malaysia Plan. As an MDEC e-Rezeki partner, Beam employs over 250 Malaysian gig workers as Beam Rangers to conduct important maintenance tasks on its high-technology e-scooters ensuring that Beam e-scooters are in tip-top condition for users.

Moving forward, following the recognition of micromobility as an essential part of the public transport framework in the 12th Malaysia Plan, Beam’s continued cooperation with federal agencies and local councils helps provide great insights on the development of pedestrian and micromobility-friendly infrastructure. This ensures that as e-scooter usage continues to boom, cities become more accessible while users, pedestrians, and motorists remain safe.

According to Beam Mobility, the company also strives to ensure that its e-scooters are as accessible and affordable as they can be for all Malaysians. The #BeamForAll campaign advocates for equitable access to transportation services, tailoring its prices to specific community segments, making them a viable option for first and last mile transportation in under-served areas.

Isuzu Malaysia Sdn Bhd has launched the latest generation GIGA truck range, making available 5 models of this heavy duty truck for a variety uses. Though Isuzu has been the best-selling truck brand in Malaysia for 8 consecutive years, its share of the heavy duty / prime mover segment still has room for growth as over 90% of its total truck sales consists of the popular light-duty ELF range.

With the new generation GIGA trucks, the company is confident that it will contribute significantly to the company’s sales and brand popularity. The latest range of GIGA trucks includes the ‘C’ series i.e. CYZ420 rigid truck, and the ‘E’ series i.e. EXR420 4×2 and EXZ460 6×4 prime movers.

The ‘C’ series rigid is fitted with a 6-cylinder 15,681 cc commonrail direct injection turbo diesel engine that is compliant with Euro 3 standards, and compatible with B20 biodiesel. Mated with a 7-speed manual transmission, it has 420 PS @ 1,800 rpm and 1,863 Nm of torque @ 770 – 1,300 rpm. It has a curb weight of 8,780 kg and a Gross Vehicle Weight of 25,000 kg.

On the other hand, the ‘E’ series prime movers (EXR420 and EXZ460) run the 15,681 cc 6WG1 engine similar to the ‘C’ series but the EXZ460 6×4 model has a higher output of 460 PS @ 1,800 rpm and 2,256 Nm @ 900 – 1,300 rpm. The ‘E’ series also has a 16-speed AMT (automated manual transmission) option besides the 7-speed manual (EXR420) and 16-speed manual (EXZ460). The Gross Combined Vehicle Weight are 45,000 kg (EXR420) and 60,000 kg (EXZ460).

These new GIGA trucks are the first full model change since Isuzu launched the first generation in 1994 in Japan. The new design is based on the concept of ‘Meri Hari’ (“メリハリ“) which means to achieve balance and harmony. Through this concept, the new GIGA trucks offer a balance of toughness and power with comfort and economy. The cab has been designed with improved aerodynamics for efficiency, and the cabin is designed for better functionality and comfort. Furthermore, the double layer chassis frame of the CYZ420 ensures durability.Isuzu GIGA_CYZ420_Truck

The cab’s exterior shape has been optimised to a cubic form to achieve the best-in-class aerodynamics which significantly reduces drag (improved by up to 3.1%) for better cooling performance, and fuel efficiency. The cab features a full-floating suspension set-up for a smoother ride and a powered tilt mechanism for easy access. The trucks also feature rear body mounts that are simplified yet offer trailer versatility.

Meanwhile, the interior of the new GIGA features European-standard ergonomics that provides driver-friendly features, thus improving operation and comfort. One of the key features for the prime mover is the high-performance air suspension seat (‘E’ series) with an integrated seat belt produced by the renowned German seating system specialist, Isringhausen (ISRI). The seat provides excellent comfort and is equipped with various features including seat warming and cooling, as well as various adjustments such as tilt, reclining angle, shoulder adjustment, lumbar support and more, to better fit different body shapes and preferences. There are also USB ports and a multitude of storage space that are convenient for long trips.

Moreover, on the dashboard is a 4″ LCD multi-info display which shows a variety of crucial information to the driver, including driver assistance, transmission, utility, and always-on display areas. The multi-info display as well as the cruise control can be operated via the steering wheel switches for convenience. This is a new feature in Isuzu trucks, and can significantly improve driving safety.

In terms of safety equipment, the trucks are equipped with the Isuzu Safety Plus platform which offer key safety features including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), SRS airbag for the driver and brake override accelerator (BOA), and immobilizer.

Isuzu GIGA_Smoother AMT_Windscreen“We are very enthusiastic about launching the new next generation Isuzu GIGA heavy-duty and prime mover trucks in Malaysia – a range that presents several ‘firsts’ in design concept for improved efficiency, safety and comfort. Malaysia is only the third country globally after Japan and China, and the first in Southeast Asia to be introduced with our new GIGA trucks, and this is a testament of Isuzu’s commitment and appreciation to our customers in Malaysia,” said Atsunori Murata, Chief Operating Officer, Isuzu Malaysia Sdn Bhd. “The Isuzu brand has achieved notable successes in Malaysia, being recognised as the top truck brand for many consecutive years, thanks to the great support from all our customers,” he added. According to Murata-san, the company aims to establish a firmer footprint in the heavy-duty and prime mover segment.

Isuzu currently has a nationwide network of 11 dealers to provide aftersales services, complemented by 33 Isuzu Doctor Mobiles that provide 24-hour breakdown support. The company has plans to expand its network in due course.

“In addition to power and performance which are crucial to the industries the trucks are made for, the new Isuzu GIGA trucks also offer greater efficiency and serviceability to ensure maximum uptime and productivity for our customers,” added Murata. “Isuzu’s motivation for introducing the new Isuzu GIGA trucks is driven by our commitment to offer wider and improved truck options for our customers who are increasingly demanding more efficiency in a highly competitive landscape. In Malaysia, we have a large network and with the right products and pricing, we trust Isuzu has a steady future in becoming a specialist in all commercial vehicle segments,” he concluded.

With a positive sales momentum going, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) is expecting this trend to continue with the impending launch of the all-new Toyota Veloz. In June 2022, UMWT sold a total of 8,939 vehicles (Toyota [8,870] and Lexus [69] combined). Comparatively, UMWT recorded total sale of 7,579 vehicles (Toyota [7,442] and Lexus [137]) in May.

The company’s total year-to-date sales in June 2022 stands at 45,911 vehicles (Toyota and Lexus combined). This is a 35% year-on-year increase compared with the total of 34,111 vehicles (Toyota + Lexus) for the same period in 2021.

However, according to UMWT, the recent announcement on the SST exemption is expected to have a short-term negative impact on sales. Nonetheless, this is mitigated by early signs of a recovery in the global shortage of semiconductors in the 2nd half of this year. This means that production could be ramped up to meet the backlog of orders, and that it could bode well for the newer and more sophisticated models that will launch in due course.

Toyota Veloz_360-T_FeaturesOne such model is the all-new Toyota Veloz 1.5 A/T. This model will take over from the Rush and will come with more premium features. This all-new crossover comes with a new platform, transmission and suspension setup that promises better fuel efficiency and comfort. It will also have Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), including adaptive cruise control, as well as a 9″ infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and Qi wireless charging pad.

There also seems to be more differentiation from its sister model this time in the exterior and interior. According to the Toyota website, there will be 5 colour options available, including a pair with 2-tone scheme (i.e. black roof). All authorised Toyota showrooms are now accepting bookings for the all-new Veloz.

“Shifting gears into the second half of 2022, UMW Toyota Motors is focused on going the Extra Mile to provide Toyota owners with the best ownership and aftersales experience by reimagining what ownership is about. Looking ahead, shifting consumer behaviours will likely place value on advanced automotive technologies and comprehensive security features supported by a host of value-added aftersales services,” said Ravindran K, President of UMWT.

Toyota 3S Dealership_Otomobil Sejahtera_Cyberjaya“At UMW Toyota Motor, we offer owners not only the best technological advancement at their fingertips for a smoother and safer drive, we go the Extra Mile to enhance their ownership journey. Through financial and insurance packages, top-notch servicing and Toyota 247 roadside assist, we are confident in delivering an unforgettable journey from the starting line by taking great care of our customers from the moment they enter our doors”.

Going into the 2nd half of 2022, you can expect more mid-year savings and cash rebates along with a few product launches. You will also get to experience UMWT’s Extra Mile initiative in providing the best value for an exceptional drive.

According to MAN Malaysia Managing Director, Andrew O’Brooks, the company wants to grow its market presence in the Southern region. “There has been strong interest in this region since the launch of our New MAN Truck Generation. MANTAP! was an invitation to the transport community in the South to come and test drive this groundbreaking solution from MAN and for us to prove how good it really is in almost every aspect compared to other trucks in the market,” he said.

I am very impressed with the New MAN TGX flagship with its spacious high cabin and 540 hp engine and plan to purchase one next year”.

Meanwhile, Tuan Haji Dzulfariqh bin Abdul Manap, owner of Chain Hub Sdn Bhd, took the opportunity to bring 9 of his drivers to the test drive event. “It was a very well organised event that should perhaps be held nearer to where the drivers gather so that more of them could experience this latest Truck from MAN. All my drivers gave very positive feedback after driving the New MAN TGS. In fact, I have placed an order for 2 units and look forward to these new additions to my fleet,” he said.MAN TGX_Cabin_Truck Drivers
