The Young Driver Development Program which was started by UMW Toyota Motor and GAZOO Racing in 2020 is bearing fruit as several of its rookie drivers are quickly rising to the top ranks of Malaysian motorsports and being noticed.

GAZOO Racing Vios Sprint Cup_ToyotaIn Round 2 of the GAZOO Racing Vios Sprint Cup last weekend, 16-year-old Putera Adam raced to a double race win, together with his partner and veteran racer Eddie Lew in the #61 Laser Motor Racing Vios. The weekend also saw sterling performances by Naquib Azlan and Mika Hakimi. All 3 young drivers are from the first batch of the Young Driver Development Program to groom drivers between the ages of 16 and 20 to transition from karting and simulator racing to saloon car racing. Incidentally, Putera Adam is the youngest of the first batch of rookies, joining the program at aged 14. Both Putera and Naquib also went on to score podium finishes in the Malaysia Championship Series (MCS) that was also held over the weekend.

Others in the program competing in the weekend’s finale of the GAZOO Racing Vios Sprint Cup included the  current season’s Rookie Class drivers Nabil Azlan and Sharique Zulqarinain, and 2021 Rookie Class graduate Jwan Hii.Toyota GAZOO Racing Festival_Vios Sprint Cup_Winners_Round 2

“It’s incredible to see how much and how quickly these young drivers have evolved. We are equally proud that many have also gone on to compete and are enjoying success in other events beyond the Vios Challenge and Vios Sprint Cup one-make series where they have trained so hard to develop their driving and race craft,” said UMW Toyota Motor President Ravindran K.

Toyota GAZOO Racing_Vios Sprint Cup_Pit StopCommenting on the GAZOO Racing Vios Sprint Cup, Ravindran said: “The two-driver and one-hour format has brought a different dimension to what we and the drivers have been used to in 5 seasons of the Vios Challenge. It’s incredibly exciting to watch, it’s unpredictable, and it fulfills one very important objective that is to have elite/experienced working alongside amateur / young drivers with the hope that they will be able to impart their knowledge to the next generation of drivers.”

The GAZOO Racing Vios Sprint Cup was held along with the Malaysia Championship Series, and consisted of 2 rounds and 4 individual races. It is a one-make race involving two-driver teams competing in a one-hour race and vying for total prize monies amounting to RM60,000 per weekend.

Vios Sprint Cup_Toyota GAZOO Racing_Laser Motor Racing_Toyotsu RacingThe GAZOO Racing Vios Sprint Cup is run independently of the Vios Challenge but it retains the format of a one-make series whereby competitors drive identical race-prepared Toyota Vios with stock standard engine & transmission, as well as suspension, tyres and fuel – to ensure that the emphasis is on race craft, driving skills and experience.

In this 4th and final running of the GAZOO Racing Sprint Cup, Putera and Liew rounded up a perfect weekend in rather precarious conditions with back to back victories. Round 2’s Race 2 began as a dry race despite overcast weather at the Sepang International Circuit. But as the one-hour race around the 5.543 km track got underway, it started to drizzle which made track conditions tricky and unpredictable in certain sections.Vios Sprint Cup_Toyota GAZOO Racing_Sepang International Circuit

The race was essentially 18-year-old Mika’s to win, having taken over driving duties from his team mate Tengku Djan Ley Tengku Mahaleel in the #61 Prima Pearl TD Racing Vios, with Lew pouncing hard just 0.5 seconds behind, and Toyotsu Racing’s William Ho in third place.

Heavy rain then descended on the race with just 2 laps to go and the pressure to defend his lead seemed to have gotten the better of Mika who aquaplaned off the track, easily letting Lew, Ho and Prima Pearl TD Racing’s second car i.e. #12 with Mitchell Cheah in the driver’s seat through. Mika fought his way back on to the track, rejoining in fourth position but made a 2nd mistake on the final lap in the very same corner to  eventually finish 5th behind Telagamas Toyota’s Freddie Ang.

The last lap of the race was equally nerve-wracking for Lew as he had to fend off Ho who was left dragging his rear bumper for several laps after a botched overtaking maneuver much earlier. “Today I really utilised all my experience to drive in the dry, wet and in heavy rain. It was a difficult race,” said 48-year-old Lew.Vios Sprint Cup_Toyota GAZOO Racing_Laser Motor Racing_Eddie Lew_Putera Adam

For Putera who started the race for the pair, a slow getaway dropped him to as far back as 10th despite starting from 6th position. “I struggled a bit at the start. After regrouping over 3 to 4 laps I chased for the lead and eventually led the race but in no time, I had Tengku Djan on my back and he was definitely a lot faster. After he passed me, I just decided to follow him because I knew it was a long race ahead,” commented Putera.

On his partnership with Lew and the vast difference in age, Putera also said: “It’s an honour to drive with Eddie (Lew). He’s a very good driver and he used to drive with my dad.”

The biggest gainer in today’s Race 2 however, was Super Evergreen Motorsports’ Mohamad Roni who jumped from 14th on the grid to 2nd place in the opening laps of the race. He was however, punted off the track in a race incident. Disappointments over the weekend included that endured by the pair of Naquib and Hayden Haikal representing Axle Sports who gave away a victory in Race 1 with a last lap incident, and was again involved in an incident in Race 2 eliminating them from contention.

The champion in each of the 2 races at the GAZOO Racing Vios Sprint Cup stood to win RM10,000 cash, followed by RM8,000 for the first runner up, RM6,000 to the 3rd place, and RM4,000 and RM2,000 for the 4th and 5th places respectively. In total, the Vios Sprint Cup offered prize monies that amounted to RM60,000 per round, making it the second most lucrative racing event in Malaysia after the Vios Challenge.Toyota GAZOO Racing Festival_Vios Sprint Cup_Winners_Round 2

In the 4 races held and from a total of RM120,000 at stake, the pair of Tengku Djan and Mika emerged with the most winnings, totaling RM30,000 accumulated from 2 race victories, a 2nd and a 5th place finish. The pair of Putera and Liew meanwhile, collected a total of RM24,000 over 4 races with 2 victories and a 4th placing.

MPI Generali Insurans Berhad, is the first insurance provider in Malaysia to offer this free Car Pickup and Dropoff (PnD) service to its motor insurance policy customers. By delivering a fast, safe and innovative vehicle assistance service, the company aims to ease its customers’ car servicing experience.

MPI Generali is providing this PnD service to its existing motor insurance policyholders in Malaysia with a sum insured of RM50,000 and above. This service is a joint initiative with Europ Assistance, the assistance company of the Generali Group.

MPI Generali_Pickup and Dropoff serviceThe PnD service can be accessed through its Customer Portal, where an ambassador from Europ Assistance can be requested to pick up a policyholder’s car at the chosen location, then taken to the scheduled service point and returned later to the same location or a new one.

The PnD facility covers the logistics handling of the car for a range of services i.e. regular car servicing, car wash or polish, and minor accident fixing, for an unlimited number of times per year. It is currently available in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Mondays to Saturdays, 8 am – 6 pm, for active MPI Generali Private Car Comprehensive policyholders.

MPI Generali_CEO_K.G. Krishnamoorthy Rao“We’ve learnt post pandemic, that it is imperative to both innovate and stay ahead of the curve, especially in the area of insurance. While we are confident of growth trajectory in 2022, we intend to distinguish ourselves by being the first in Malaysia, to offer the car pick up and drop off (PnD) service to our policyholders for free,” said K.G. Krishnamoorthy Rao, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MPI Generali.

“Covid-19 has changed the landscape of work. The future of work is one of hybrid and this is where safety, convenience and technology have a role in reshaping the way we look at auto servicing. Customers only need to access an app or a portal to have their cars safely picked up, serviced and brought back at no charge. Being the first in the industry to introduce this is a strategic move for us. We foresee that this will have a positive impact on our revenue targets, as we aim to grow by 20% within a year,” he added.

The popularity of such a service is expected to increase as clients prefer a hassle-free, time-saving, low contact experience, concerning services needed for their personal vehicles. Globally, Europ Assistance, which partnered with the automotive technology solutions provider 21North, has a fleet of over 9000 providers, who have completed 4.5 million trips with a transaction value worth RM264 million (€55 million) annually in India, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.

In November 2021, Europ Assistance had launched in Malaysia the 21North Europ Assistance platform, with standalone PnD services for vehicle owners, automotive dealers and workshops with a digitally powered pick up and drop facility. The uptake has been positive indicating a growing demand.

Europ Assistance Malaysia_CEO_Philippe DemangeatPhilippe Demangeat, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Europ Assistance Malaysia, said “We’ve seen very promising growth in the area of PnD in Malaysia since we started. Collaborating with MPI Generali will accelerate our development in Malaysia while providing differentiating and innovating services to MPI Generali customers”.

“Having operated in Europe since 1963, and in Asia for the last 30 years, our experiences have justified this digital direction in automotive assistance, particularly across Asia. Here, in Malaysia, there is an addressable market of 15 million cars, which allows for scalable deployment, creating economical services for all. Post pandemic, we are confident in expanding further our scope of services with digital roadside assistance in case of breakdown or accident,” added Demangeat.

GoCar Malaysia and EV Connection have teamed up to enhance the charging convenience of EV users. Ford Motor Company and its local distribution partner, Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC), have launched the next-generation Ford Ranger which comes with improved ride and handling and adds more tech. The Ranger line-up consists of the XL, XLT, XLT Plus and WildTrak. For the enthusiasts, the range-topping Raptor will officially arrive in Q4 2022.

The Raptor teaser.
The Raptor teaser.

Ford Ranger_XLT Plus_Raptor_WildTrak

The new Ranger gets an even bolder appearance than before, keeping in line with Ford’s truck design language. Its face features a new grille and new signature C-clamp headlight treatment. Meanwhile, the subtle shoulder line along the sides incorporates bolder wheel-arches to give the Ranger a surefooted stance. Furthermore, this will be the first time the Ranger offers matrix LED headlights (on the WildTrak variant) with auto high beam (standard on the XLT Plus). At the rear, the taillight design syncs with the signature graphics at the front.

The design of the new Ranger at the front allows for improved airflow so that the cooling is optimised, particularly when towing and carrying heavy loads. This is courtesy of a hydro-formed front-end structure that also helps future-proof the Ranger for other propulsion technologies. Currently, the Ranger comes with a 2.0L Bi-Turbo (XLT Plus and WildTrak) and a 2.0L Turbo diesel engine for the rest. The Bi-Turbo engine puts out 210 PS @ 3,750 rpm and 500 Nm @ 1,750 – 2,000 rpm, and is paired with a 10-speed automatic with SelectShift. Meanwhile, the single turbo engine produces 170 PS @ 3,500 rpm and 405 Nm @ 1,750 – 2,500 rpm. The transmission choices for the latter engine are either a 6-speed automatic with SelectShift or a 6-speed manual.

The next-generation Ranger’s track and wheelbase see a 50 mm increase for better stability on and off-road. It has also improved the front approach angle to 30 degrees (up from 28.5 degrees), and rear departure angle to 23 degrees (up from 21 degrees). Engineers also increased the turning range and shifted the rear suspension dampers outboard of the frame rails to give drivers and passengers a more controlled ride whether the vehicle is laden or not.

Ford Ranger WildTrak_Off RoadTraditionally, only the Ranger Raptor offers selectable drive modes. This has now expanded to the other variants, with up to six different modes depending on variant i.e. Normal, Eco, Tow / Haul, Slippery for on-road, Mud / Ruts and Sand for off-road. The Ranger WildTrak gets all these modes while the variants from the base XL to the XLT Plus come standard with 4 drive modes sans the off-road ones. These modes adjust everything from the gearshift to throttle response, traction and stability controls, ABS and more. Further, off-road recovery is made easier with the dual recovery hooks in the front bumper.

Ford also saw an opportunity to make major improvements to the Ranger’s usability, after observing how customers climbed up to the load box. With that, it designed an integrated side-step behind the rear tyres (WildTrak) for more convenient access to the box. In addition, the Ranger team worked to ensure that a wider variety of cargo could fit and stay secure in the load box. By widening the truck by 50 mm, customers can now load large flat items, such as plywood sheets or a full-size pallet.

Additional convenient touches include a new, tough plastic-moulded bedliner (XLT Plus and WildTrak) that helps protect both the truck bed from scratches as well as the owner’s knees from kneeling on a steel truck bed. There are also extra cargo tie-down points on strong steel tube rails to provide convenient points to secure loads. Durable, flexible load box caps around the sides of the box and across the tailgate also help conceal structural attachment points for canopies and other aftermarket accessories.

The next-generation Ranger also offers a new cargo management system designed with dividers to hold various sized items such as lumber or toolboxes. Owners can also create smaller compartments to store objects, which would otherwise have to go in the cab, using a system of ultra-strong spring-loaded cleats that clip into rails bolted to each side of the cargo box. The tailgate can also double as a mobile workbench with an integrated ruler and clamp pockets to measure, grip and cut building materials.

Inside, the car-like cabin of the next-generation Ranger offers a more modern and functional design. The new Ranger has a high level of technology integration, functional storage, premium soft-touch materials and visual cues to enhance cabin ambience. The heart of the Ranger’s connective experience is the first-in-class 10.1″ or 12″ touchscreen (depending on variant) in the centre stack. It complements the fully digital instrument panel and is loaded with Ford’s latest voice-activated SYNC®4A communications, entertainment and information system.

Many of the traditional driving mode controls have been moved from the dash and centre console to their own dedicated display on the SYNC screen. With the press of a button, drivers can go to Ranger’s dedicated screen for all off-road and drive modes where you can monitor the driveline, steering angle, vehicle pitch and roll angles and other controls. In the WildTrak, the screen is also linked to a 360-degree camera, making parking a breeze in tight spaces. It can also be used to assist in negotiating tricky off-road terrain.

The design team also created clever storage and useful features for owners including places to store a phone or charge it wirelessly (XLT Plus and WildTrak) as well as a large centre console bin. The door pockets have  also been designed to carry more, while the wide dash conceals an upper glovebox. There are also storage bins under and behind the rear seats.

For safety, the next-generation Ranger offers more of the latest in crash protection features and advanced driver assistance technologies. The WildTrak gets the segment-first Evasive Steer Assist feature. This system helps drivers avoid potential forward collisions by helping to steer with less effort when a collision cannot be avoided by braking alone.

The WildTrak and XLT Plus also come with a new Post-Collison Braking system which applies the brakes after a collision, to reduce the risk of secondary collisions. Also new to the Ford Ranger is Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go feature, Cross Traffic Alert and Reverse Brake Assist on the WildTrak. As part of the smart technology safety suite on next-generation Ford Ranger, the Automated Emergency Braking (AEB) system on the XLT Plus and WildTrak has been enhanced with cyclist and pedestrian detection in addition to providing AEB support at an intersection in some instances.

“The Ranger has always been a trusted partner to small business owners, families, adventurers, commercial fleets and so many morein more than 180 markets around the world. With the new advanced features offering even greater capability and versatility, we believe that the next-generation Ranger will continue to revolutionise the pickup segment and build on its widening appeal in the market,” said Yukontorn ‘Vickie’ Wisadkosin, President, ASEAN and Asia Pacific Distributor Markets, Ford Motor Company.Ford Ranger_Tailgate

The next-generation Ranger is available in 2 new stunning colours i.e. Sedona Orange and Luxe Yellow on the WildTrak, in addition to the existing colours of Arctic White, Meteor Gray, Aluminium Metallic, Lightning Blue and Absolute Black (depending on variant). The retail prices are (on the road without insurance):

  • WildTrak : RM168,888
  • XLT Plus : RM142,888
  • XLT AT : RM129,888
  • XLT MT : RM124,888
  • XL AT : RM113,888
  • XL MT : RM108,888

Ford Ranger_Outdoors_Camping“The trend towards pickups for more than just work has been growing in Malaysia. This is especially true for the upwardly mobile and affluent who used to prefer SUVs but are now gravitating to the Ranger, particularly WildTrak, for its work capabilities, latest technologies, and premium sedan interior. We are confident the next-generation Ranger will fulfil the needs and wants of an even broader range of customers as an all-rounder vehicle for work, family and play,” said Turse Zuhair, Managing Director, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion.

In conjunction with the launch of the next-generation Ford Ranger, SDAC is also introducing several new aftersales and service enhancements to provide better the ownership experience. For a start, next-generation Ranger owners can opt for an extended service package, through which you can make upfront payments for scheduled services for up to 5 years. A key benefit is cost savings as you can lock-in the current price amidst rising costs and build the payments into your loan.

Additionally, besides the standard 5-year warranty, you can also choose an extended warranty of up to 7 years for better peace of mind.

Furthermore, as a Ranger owner, you will become part of the Ford Inner Circle in Malaysia. This is a community of like-minded individuals who enjoy pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons, contributing back to society and going for excursions such as the Ford Ranger Getaways, with friends and family.

Created exclusively for the Malaysian market, next-generation Ranger customers will receive a privilege key code which offers exclusive discounts to get you started on your Ford Ranger Getaways adventures, in addition to invitations to exclusive events. You will also gain access to scheduled familiarisation sessions at a Ford showroom that not only allows you to build relationships with your preferred dealer, but also provides you with in-depth understanding of the features and full potential of your Ranger.

Officially launched in Shenzhen, China recently is the OMODA 5 SUV, the first model in Chery’s new global OMODA series.

The OMODA 5 is designed to be stylish, efficient and carries intelligent technology. The first to use Chery’s new ‘Art in Motion’ design language, the OMODA 5 plays with light and shadow to give it both static and dynamic balance. The borderless diamond-cut geometric matrix grille extends from the middle to both sides, to characterise a ‘parallel universe’ where dreams match reality.Chery OMODA 5_Grille

Chery Automobile Co Ltd Deputy General Manager and General Manager of Marketing Jia Yaquan said OMODA 5 has been designed with youth in mind. The ‘parallel universe’ concept is meant to mirror the lifestyle of today’s youth who pursue freedom and independence in social games, share thoughts and ideas in different worlds, and immerse themselves in virtual environments. Such is the goal of ‘Art in Motion’ i.e. to become the design language that caters best to youth in the new era.

Chery claims the efficient 1.6L TGDI engine in the OMODA 5 sends 197 PS and 290 Nm of torque to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. This gives the OMODA 5 an official 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.8 seconds. At the same time, the Super Sport mode provides an engaging driving experience, made more exciting by a professionally-tuned simulated soundtrack.

Chery_OMODA 5_Lion 5 AI CockpitIn terms of intelligent technology, the OMODA 5 uses Chery’s latest-generation ‘Lion 5.0 AI technology smart cockpit’. This system features AI emotion monitoring and adjustment, a 24.6″ screen that incorporates driving information and infotainment, and a Sony audio system that syncs with a 64-colour rhythmic ambient lighting system for immersive audio-visual entertainment. It also has Chery’s ‘C-Pure’ cabin that incorporates European-standard environmental protection technology and design, providing the occupants with clean air through a negative-ion air purification and filtration system.

The OMODA 5 is meant to be Chery’s global brand rejuvenation and a step to penetrate international markets. We should be expecting it to arrive in Malaysia and further stir up the SUV segment.

This is the way forward for modern cars. Much like smartphones, all models of the Porsche Taycan are eligible to receive the latest software update. Regardless of vehicle age, motor or body type, all Taycans can be updated with the latest 2023 model year software. The all-electric Taycan was introduced in 2019 and Porsche has delivered over 75,000 units globally. The update will however, be implemented on a market-specific basis.

Porsche Taycan_Steering_Meter Cluster_Multi Info DisplayDepending on when their vehicle was delivered, Taycan owners will benefit from, among other things, an increase in powertrain efficiency as well as new functions and improvements in the Porsche Communication Management (PCM), Porsche Connect and assistance systems. This update also includes the option of having individual functions and equipment unlocked after purchase (function on demand, FoD) and will enhance the over-the-air (OTA) update capability of all Taycan models. The update is free for customers and can be carried out during a visit to a Porsche service workshop.

“This campaign will allow our customers to benefit from the continuous further development of the Taycan. We have extensively optimised the model series in almost every respect since 2019,” says Kevin Giek, Vice President Model Line Taycan. “New functions have been added and others have been revised or tweaked to further enhance the customer experience. Following this update, anyone driving a Taycan from early in the car’s production run will be pleasantly surprised by how much has developed on the vehicle side since then.”Porsche Taycan_Malaysia

Internally, Porsche refers to this as the ‘uPdate’, because the 2023 model year, which started in July 2022, bears the letter ‘P’.

The precise scope of the update, and the duration of the necessary workshop visit will depend on the specific software status of your Taycan. Naturally, the older the car is, the more improvements and innovations will be installed, and thus the longer it will take.

Porsche Taycan_Charging PortFurther, the 22 kW onboard charger has now also become available for retrofitting¹. Customers can combine this retrofit at their own expense with a workshop visit for the software update. With up to 22 kW of charging capacity, the more powerful variant charges the battery significantly faster. In Europe and North America, the retrofit also includes activation of the Plug & Charge function. This enables convenient charging and payment without a card or app. As soon as the charging cable is plugged in, the Taycan establishes encrypted communication with the Plug & Charge-compatible charging station. The charging and payment processes then start automatically.

Key Updates:
  • Powertrain
    • In the ‘Normal’ and ‘Range’ driving modes in all-wheel drive models, in partial load operation the front electric motor is almost completely disconnected and de-energised. While coasting and at a standstill, both axles are free of drive torque. The electric freewheel reduces frictional drag losses and increases the vehicle’s range. The all-wheel drive indicator is now shown as an energy-flow indicator in the central display. This makes the current operating status of the drives easier to see. The energy recuperation strategy has also been optimised. The automatic recuperation setting, for example, is retained even when the driver changes the driving programme. These improvements are relevant for Taycan models from the 2020 and 2021 model years.²
  • Thermal management
    • Better conditioning of the battery, especially at low outside temperatures, enables the Taycan to be rapidly charged more frequently overall and over a wider range of battery charge levels. The waste heat from the electrical components, for example, is used even more than before to temper the battery. For 2020 and 2021² model-year Taycan models, this enables greater range and shorter charging times.
  • Porsche Communication Management (PCM) and Porsche Connect
    • New functions, a colourful tile design on the start screen and even greater ease of use are the hallmarks of the model upgrades in this area. In Taycan models produced in the 2020 and 2021 model years and up to mid-February 2022, the update optimises the voice control and integrates the Spotify app. Android Auto is now available wirelessly. Furthermore, charging stations can be filtered and selected in the navigation system based on charging capacity. Drivers of 2021 model year Taycan models with a head-up display can look forward to the optimised view of the navigation map, among other elements. The display contents have been expanded. For all Taycan models prior to the 2023 model year, the on-board operating instructions can now also be used via voice control.
  • Assistance systems
    • Some systems can now support the driver in even more situations. The sensors of the ParkAssist function now work with a greater range. The search for available parking spaces has been improved as well, so that now even smaller spaces are offered to the driver as an option. These enhancements will benefit Taycan models from the 2020, 2021 and 2022 model years.
  • Unlocking functions after vehicle purchase (FoD)
    • All Taycan models from the 2020, 2021 and 2022 model years are now also eligible, on request, for the keyless opening function (comfort access) for the doors and tailgate. The option of over-the-air (OTA) software updates has now also been further expanded for the new model year.

After all the online hype, the all-new Perodua Alza has finally broken cover. And it looks to be another winner for the brand, as according to Perodua, the company has received over 30,000 bookings before the official launch. This is the largest number of bookings the company has achieved in its history. Granted that this is also due to buyers taking advantage of the sales tax exemption period, which ended 30 June 2022, it nonetheless is quite an achievement. Significantly, about 4,000 of these are orders converted from the preceding Alza.

The 7-seater Perodua Alza launches with 3 variants available i.e. Alza X (RM62,500), Alza H (RM68,000), and the range-topping Alza AV (RM75,500). These prices are for private registration in Peninsular Malaysia, with sales tax but without insurance.

Perodua Alza_1.5L 2NR-VE EngineLet’s start with the common features found across the variants. All of them are powered by the familiar 1.5L 2NR-VE engine with Dual VVT-i, that is paired with a D-CVT (similar to the Ativa). The engine produces 105 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm of torque @ 4,200 rpm. Officially, fuel economy is listed at 22 km/l.

Standard equipment includes LED headlights with Follow-me-home and Leaving home functions, LED rear combination lamps, 6 airbags (front, side and curtain), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), Hill-Start Assist (HSA), ISOFIX with top tether, as well as the Perodua Smart Drive Assist suite.

Perodua_Advanced Safety Assist_Cameras_Drive RecorderSmart Drive Assist is divided into 4 categories i.e. Advanced Safety Assist, Driving Assist, Parking Assist and Headlamp Assist. In the first category, all ASA features are found in every variant i.e. Pre-collision Warning, Pre-collision Braking, Pedal Misoperation Control, and Front Departure Alert, while in the 2nd category (Driving Assist), the standard features are Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention; Electronic Parking Brake with Auto Hold, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Control, and Blind Spot Monitor are available only in the AV variant.

Likewise for the Parking Assist features, the common feature is the Rear Corner Sensors. The H variant adds Front Corner Sensors, but the AV gets Reverse Camera, Panoramic View Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. For Headlamp Assist, the X variant has Auto High Beam function while the H and AV get Adaptive Driving Beam.

The range-topper AV also enjoys rear solid disc brakes, side skirting, 2-tone instrument panel, 2-tone combination leather seats and a different console layout with padded armrest due to the use of electronic parking brake.

Some of the features shared by the H and AV variants are the auto headlights with sequential turn signals, LED fog lamps, chrome back door garnish, 7″ TFT multi-info display, 9″ infotainment touchscreen, 6 speakers, 1 front and 2 rear USB ports, 1 rear and 1 deck 12V socket, leather wrapped steering, and key-free entry and push button start.

Perodua Alza_AV_Ivory White (Solid)The new Alza is built on the new DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) platform, and has a 2,750 mm wheelbase. The front-wheel-drive platform is shared with the Daihatsu Xenia, Toyota Avanza and Toyota Veloz. Design and development of this MPV was a collaborative effort with Daihatsu Motor Co of Japan, to improve commonality and economies of scale while still maintaining some degree of brand customisation and differentiation. Perodua had invested about RM770 million in the Alza’s development since April 2018.

This MPV’s dimensions are 4,425 mm (length), 1,730 mm (width) and 1,670 mm (height), for the latter 2 variants which use 16″ wheels. For the base X variant, it gets 15″ alloy wheels and is 10 mm lower in height. This also impacts ground clearance i.e. 160 mm vs 150 mm (for the X). Cargo volume however, are the same for all i.e. 137 litres (all 7 seats used), and 498 litres (3rd row seats folded down). One of its unique features is the flexible seat arrangement which include fully reclining front and 2nd row seats.

Exterior colour choices include Vintage Brown (new colour only for H and AV), Elegant Black, Garnet Red, Glittering Silver and Ivory White. There are also a variety of GearUp accessories for the exterior and interior to pick from.

“Beginning today, some of our customers will be receiving their all-new Perodua Alza from 195 authorised sales showrooms across the country. Also, we assure our customers who booked their all-new Perodua Alza on or before 30 June will receive their vehicle before the 31 March 2023 deadline,” said Dato’ Zainal Abidin
Ahmad, Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer.

According to Dato’ Zainal, Perodua has a total of over 200,000 bookings on-hand, due to the sales tax exemption. About 15% of this is for the all-new Alza. Those who had booked their Alza on or before 30 June 2022 and receive their unit on or before 31 March 2023 will enjoy lower prices as they qualify for the sales exemption initiative.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) did its bit to help out the Orang Asli community recently. The company had donated high-powered solar systems via Global Peace Foundation, a non-profit organisation with a mission to build resilient and cohesive Orang Asli communities.

Orang Asli_Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia_CSR_Solar SystemThe solar systems will enable access to electricity in the Orang Asli’s shared community space, commonly  known as the Rumah Adat. Lack of access to grid electricity in Orang Asli’s houses and community spaces  brings health risks, expensive energy expenses, and environmental impact. To have light after dark, the Orang Asli typically set bonfires by burning dried palm fruits. This generates a lot of smoke that causes cough and watery eyes and other ill health effects among the villagers, especially children.

Additionally, houses and community spaces are built from resources found in the forest such as bamboo and wood, and additional items such as zinc and PVC. Some of these materials are flammable, making it dangerous to use fire as a source of light.

Though some Orang Asli families also rely on disposable energy such as petrol to run generators and batteries to power more than just lights, these can be costly and not easy to obtain.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia_Arba Rahman_Senior VP_Orang Asli“As part of Malaysian society, we want to see Malaysians even the indigenous community live a better life. With high-power solar systems, we will be providing the Orang Asli community access to affordable and renewable energy that enhances productivity- allowing community projects to continue even after dark, minimizing health and environmental impact from non-renewable energy, lesser environmental pollution, and lastly reducing energy expenditure from buying expensive energy sources that are not sustainable,” said Arba Rahman, Senior Vice President of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

“This effort is together with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) global CSR program ‘STEP to the future’ which focuses on four main themes, standing for the first letters of Society, Traffic safety, Environment, and People. At MMM, we focused to benefit the society through emphasis on the Environment and People, to create a better society where people can hope for a better future,” he added.
