Still riding on its upward sales momentum from last year, Volvo Trucks continues that positive trend with the recent delivery of 10 units of Volvo FM440 trucks to Multimodal Freight Sdn Bhd. This represents an additional purchase by Multimodal over the 40 units of Volvo trucks it took delivery of last year. With its recent purchase, Multimodal now has a fleet of 200 trucks, consisting of a single brand – Volvo.

Multimodal is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) and was established in 1989 as a forwarding company to handle KTMB’s locomotive or rolling stock import shipments, as well as to serve railway cargo customers who required forwarding services. In line with its business expansion, the company obtained its haulage license in 1991 to capitalise on the growing containerisation industry back then. In 1995, Multimodal became a Volvo Trucks customer for the first time with its purchase of 30 units of Volvo FL10 to support its growing business. Over the years, it continued to add more Volvo trucks to its fleet and maintained Volvo as the only brand of trucks in its fleet. Today, Multimodal is a key customer of the Swedish truck manufacturer.

“We would like to thank Multimodal for their steadfast support and trust given to the Volvo brand. Our customer’s success is our success too, and we make it our responsibility to ensure that our products and services are providing the best outcome and return on investment to our customers such as Multimodal. Volvo FM is an ideal all-round player in our range of trucks, and its first-class driving features and properties will provide Multimodal with many levels of flexibility and transport efficiency,” commented Mitch Peden, Managing Director, Volvo Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

A handover ceremony was recently held at Volvo Trucks’ Port Klang dealership to officially mark the delivery. Officially receiving the trucks was Mohd Hasdey Bin Yaakob, CEO of Multimodal Freight Sdn Bhd. A limited edition truck scale model was also presented to Multimodal to mark the occasion.

Volvo Malaysia Sdn Bhd_Volvo Trucks_Uptime Promise_Gold Service Agreement_MalaysiaDuring the handover, Multimodal also signed up for Volvo’s Gold Service Agreement for all the 50 units of new trucks, which will cover preventive maintenance and repairs. As part of this service agreement, Multimodal also gets to enjoy an added feature called Volvo Uptime Promise, which was first introduced to the Malaysian market last year. This unique benefit will provide monetary compensation to Volvo Trucks’ Gold Service Agreement customers if their truck experiences a breakdown time that exceeds Volvo Trucks’ 12 hours of committed time to put the truck back on the road.

Mohd Hasdey Bin Yaakob, CEO of Multimodal Freight Sdn Bhd said, ”Multimodal is a logistic company with vast capacity and capabilities not just to support the rail freight volume from our parent company; but also to meet the transportation requirements of other local and overseas customers. As such, we require strong performing trucks and reliable aftersales support from our truck partner to help us maintain our service quality to our customers.”

“We have been using Volvo Trucks for over 20 years now and we have been very pleased with the performance, safety features and fuel efficiency. The trucks’ comfortability, power and great maneuverability have also helped us to retain good drivers and attract new recruits. I am very comfortable to have Volvo Trucks maintain the fleet for us. After all, our focus is to grow our transport business. The Volvo Gold Service Agreement assures me that our trucks are in the good hands of the experts, who can help to ensure the best possible truck uptime,” he added.

Peden further shared, “The signing of the Gold Service Agreement by Multimodal also symbolises a strong relationship that we have managed to earn and build with our customer over the years. With great product features and benefits such as Volvo Uptime Promise, high productivity, lower fuel costs and driver training, we know that we can help our customers make a difference to their business bottom line.”

Once in a while, we like to highlight non-car stories, and this time it is about the Malayan tapir which is fast disappearing from our jungles. To raise awareness of the endangered tapir, as well as funds to aid its conservation, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has teamed up with Tarik Jeans, a local denim streetwear brand, to feature an exclusively designed capsule collection – “Modern Nostalgia”.

The Malayan tapir (also called the Asian or Oriental tapir) is unique because it is the only tapir species found in the Old World (Asia) and is the largest tapir species; the other three (maybe four) known species are found in the New World (Central and South America). The Malayan tapir or tenuk has a distinctive black and white coat pattern which it uses as camouflage. The tapir has poor eyesight but a keen sense of smell, and can live up to 30 years.

Although it has few natural predators, its existence is threatened by agricultural developments and deforestation, hunting for food and sport as well as illegal wildlife trafficking. Its numbers have significantly decreased over years and it is estimated that there are less than 3,000 left in the wild. The tapir used to be found as far north as Myanmar but is now only found in Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia and Southern Thailand.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia_VPCM_Managing Director_Erik Winter“A key pillar for Volkswagen is sustainability, and the group is investing heavily in this cause with over 500 sustainability projects worldwide. We are pleased to play our part in this meaningful project, and we will certainly not stop here as we will continue to explore ways to contribute to making a difference,” said Erik Winter, Managing Director of VPCM, who expressed keen interest to partner with Tarik Jeans on this cause.

“The Malayan Tapir is an endangered species here, together with the Malayan tigers, Borneo elephants and orangutans. As ‘gardeners of the rainforest’, the tapir plays a crucial role in maintaining the biological diversity of their habitat as they help disperse and fertilize seeds much needed for the reproduction of trees,” he added.

Modern Nostalgia - VW x Tarik Jean CSR Collaboration _Volkswagen_MalaysiaThe limited edition “Modern Nostalgia” collection by Tarik Jeans and Volkswagen features key elements from both brands, where modern and iconic Volkswagen models are married with local classic and vintage design elements. The collection has a variety of clothing and accessories e.g. t-shirts, caps, bandanas, tote bags, key chains and clothing patches.

Volkswagen_Modern Nostalgia - VW x Tarik Jean CSR Collaboration_MalaysiaAccording to Afiq Iskandar, Founder and CEO of Tarik Jeans, “The Malayan Tapir has always been part of the Tarik design aesthetics so much so that it was added as the brand’s logo (in addition to the main logo of the mamak ‘teh tarik’) – both created along the lines of our brand philosophy. In commemorating Tarik’s 10th year anniversary, we are honoured to partner with an innovative global automotive brand such as Volkswagen. ‘Modern Nostalgia’ as a capsule collection speaks a lot about the archetypal Volkswagen models and Tarik’s penchant for the retro-futurism Malaysian design scheme”.

Merchandise from the “Modern Nostalgia” collection can be purchased on Volkswagen’s and Tarik Jeans’ website, Shopee, Zalora and at all Volkswagen authorised dealers. Half of all the proceeds generated from the sale of this campaign will be donated to the Kenaboi Forest Reserve in Negeri Sembilan on World Tapir Day, 27 April.

MINI has carved a lifestyle niche for itself, issuing exclusive versions of its cars. The latest such example is the MINI Countryman Blackheath Edition launched by MINI Malaysia. Malaysia is the first market in ASEAN to get the Countryman Blackheath Edition, which is limited to only 48 units.

MINI Countryman Blackheath Edition_Bonnet Stripes_LED Headlight_Front GrilleThe Blackheath Edition takes its name after Blackheath district in southeast London, and wears a dramatic all-black design. It is available exclusively in Midnight Black, an exterior colour offering that is also making its debut in this second generation MINI Countryman. MINI Countryman Blackheath_Drive Selector Lever_Centre ConsoleAdditionally, there is a coasting function available in both the MID and GREEN driving modes. In these modes, the drivetrain will disengage as soon as the driver takes pressure off the accelerator pedal. This allows the Countryman to roll along at the engine idling speed and minimise fuel consumption. Furthermore, the redesigned Electronic Selector Lever always returns to its original position after changing between drive (D), neutral (N) and reverse (R). For convenience, the parking lock can be activated by pressing the “P” button  and Sport mode (S) can be activated from the D position by shifting the selector lever to the left.

Exterior highlights also include 19″ John Cooper Works Circuit Spoke wheels shod with run-flat tyres to complement the dark exterior colour, along with the John Cooper Works Aerodynamic kit.

Malaysia has introduced the B20 palm biodiesel programme. B20 is made up of 20% palm biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel. It is currently available in Langkawi and Labuan and will be available in phases starting with Sarawak in April 2020, Sabah later in August and Peninsular Malaysia in June 2021.

Petroleum companies such as PETRONAS, Shell, Petron, Chevron and BHPetroleum will have B20 supplied in phases to over 3,400 petrol stations across Malaysia in line with the implementation plan of the B20 Programme.

Previously, the government had mandated the B10 Programme (10% palm biodiesel and 90% petroleum diesel) in the transportation sector on February 1, 2019 and the B7 Programme (7% palm diesel and 93% petroleum diesel) in the industry sector on July 1, 2019.

Malaysia_B20 Biodiesel_Palm Oil_Wan Azizah“The implementation of the B20 Programme in the transportation sector will support demand for palm oil and stabilise its prices,” said Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah when launching the programme, here today.

For retail consumers, Euro5 B7 diesel is still being sold at selected petrol stations while in highlands such as Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands in Pahang, and Kundasang in Sabah, petrol stations will continue to supply the B7 diesel.

The implementation of the B20 Programme in the transportation sector is a proactive move by the Government to promote domestic palm oil consumption with an estimated increase of palm oil usage of 534,000 tonnes per annum.

Through the implementation of the B20 Programme in the transportation sector and the continuation of the B7 Programme in the industrial sector, about 1.3 million tonnes of palm oil annually will be used locally and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions amounting to 3.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents annually.

Meanwhile, Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok said that her ministry and the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) had conducted B20 field tests for the collection of technical data and coordinated technical consultation sessions with stakeholders.

She also said that her ministry and MPOB had collaborated with government agencies including five local Selangor authorities, Kajang Municipal Council, Subang Jaya Municipal Council, Ampang Jaya Municipal Council, Shah Alam City Council and Selayang Municipal Council in conducting B20 field tests.

In addition, vehicle distributors such as Tan Chong Industrial Equipment and Hyundai Sime Darby Motors as well as transport companies such as FGV Transport Services Sdn Bhd and SOP Transport Sdn. Bhd were also involved in the B20 test trial.

Turbo Diesel Engine_Truck_Prime MoverA total of 35 vehicles from Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) and MPOB, which have been using the B20 since June 2019 have not reported any problem to date. Meanwhile, MPI, MPOB and the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) conducted a B20 blend study of Euro 5 technology vehicles in collaboration with automotive experts from Mazda Malaysia and the Malaysian Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute with support from the Department of Road Transport and the Department of Environment.

Mazda CX-5 2.2L Skyactiv-D Diesel Engine Malaysia 2017“This study, which is the first conducted by JAMA on Euro 5 vehicles, is divided into two laboratory studies, at the Japan Automotive Research Institute which is expected to be completed in April 2020 and a field study using two Mazda CX-5 cars in Malaysia,” said Teresa.

MPOB has also conducted studies using B30 with six local universities, namely University of Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Tun Hussein Onn University Malaysia, Technical University.

While this is a good initiative by the government to stabilise crude palm oil prices, it has to be noted that palm oil is used in other sectors as a raw material, including food production. Demand from (for example) food production may be low not but it is hoped that the authorities will be able to find a balance between supply of palm oil and the demand for it should the demand from food and other sectors pick up, as well as keeping prices steady.

As to its suitability for modern diesel engines, it is for the manufacturers to advise its customers.

Proton_Badge_2020PROTON welcomes lauds the government’s move to transform Malaysia into a hub for the development and production of Next Generation Vehicles (NxGV) and critical components, outlined in the National Automotive Policy 2020 (NAP). The new strategy will present opportunities to the automotive industry players to introduce new technologies to the country while also elevating the skills and capabilities of the local vendor community.

PROTON is 50.1% owned by DRB-HICOM and 49.9% by Geely Auto and is in a position to leverage on its shareholders’ strengths, giving it access to local ecosystems via DRB-HICOM and access to new technologies via Geely Auto Group, to seize opportunities presented by NAP 2020.

Car Body Assembly_Factory_ProtonPending more details from the NAP 2020 framework, PROTON will carry on with its schedule of investing in new products & technologies as well as its plant & manufacturing facilities. The company will also continue to work with local vendors and promote investments in new technologies, especially through strategic collaborations to infuse technical capabilities and expand commercial viability.

As for its sales network, PROTON wants to enhance the ownership experience for its customers, through the expansion of integrated services in 3S / 4S outlets throughout the country.

Dr Li Chunrong_CEO_PROTON_Malaysia“The unveiling of NAP 2020 shows Malaysia is moving towards the adoption of new technology vehicles featuring electric and hybrid powertrains as well as autonomous and connectivity technologies. PROTON’s two shareholders grant us access to Malaysia’s automotive industry ecosystem as well as the technologies needed for NxGV models, one of the main thrusts of the policy. There are still many steps to take and PROTON is confident with the correct policies in place, we will be able to contribute towards Malaysia achieving the goals set out in NAP 2020,” said Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.

UMW Toyota Motor welcomes the various new measures that the government will take in the National Automotive Policy (NAP), which was announcement earlier today by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, to further develop the country’s automotive industry.

UMW Toyota Motor_Ravindran K_PresidentAccording to Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd, “We are pleased that the government has provided an updated ‘roadmap’ for the development of the industry and this will provide direction and guidance which will be of great value to forward planning, especially where investments in Malaysia are concerned”.

The introduction of the Next Generation Vehicle (NxGV) program provides another area to direct future product development for the Malaysian market. While UMWT is keen to support to be in line with the NAP 2020 objectives, when specifications and expectations are clear, it is also hoped that government will continue to be giving incentives for a sufficient length of time. This will help to justify investment and provide reasonable returns on investment.

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0172.JPGWith the Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) specifications being updated, UMWT hopes that ample time will be provided before implementation for proper review.

He also said, “We believe that our Bukit Raja Plant is equipped with automation, skilled manpower and the capacity to move align with the government’s vision developing our industry into IR4.0”.

The planned reduction of Carbon Emissions from motor vehicles by improving the fuel economy level by 2025 is commendable. “UMWT is planning to introduce more CKD hybrid vehicles in the future here in Malaysia”, said Ravindran K. We urge government to support in increasing the incentives provided to spur the hybrid market in Malaysia.

UMW Toyota Motor_Akio Takeyama_Chief Motorsports Officer_Deputy Chairman“We are always grateful to the ministries and agencies for their guidance, support and cooperation and give assurance that we will do our part to help develop not just the Malaysian automotive industry but also strive to contribute back to the society,” added Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor. “As we welcome this new era, we hope to work together with the government for Malaysian society to have a better life”.

Honda Malaysia has announced that the prices of selected Honda vehicles sold in Malaysia will increase by about 5%* to 9%*, depending on the model and variant. This price adjustment will take effect today (21 February 2020).

The anticipated higher prices of selected Honda cars follows the review to the Completely Knock-Down (CKD) customised incentive. This customised incentive is different from the excise valuation regulation announced earlier. The excise valuation regulation is expected to not affect vehicle prices.

Honda Malaysia stated that it will fully adhere to the latest requirement.

The price adjustment will be updated and applied across all 100 Honda dealers nationwide.

Perodua_President & CEO_Dato' Zainal Abidin AhmadFresh off the announcement of the National Automotive Policy 2020, the President and CEO of Perodua, YBhg Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad, has issued an official statement which we have included below, ad verbum:

Perodua Bezza Limited Edition_Malaysia Autoshow 2019 Launch_Dr Mahathir“The recently-announced National Automotive Policy 2020 (NAP 2020) sees consistency in the government’s policies to advance the Malaysian automotive eco-system to the next level.

This is apparent in the continued support for component localisation, which is the backbone of the country’s automotive industry.

Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd Official Opening RobotOver the past decade, Perodua purchased a total of RM43.5 billion worth of components from local suppliers – with RM5.4 billion last year alone – and this year we expect to spend nearly RM6 billion on locally-sourced automotive components.

This volume sustains and fortifies the Malaysian automotive eco-system, contributing to the economy, jobs and nation-building.

Also consistent is the government’s commitment to further the Energy-Efficient Vehicle (EEV) programme, in which many players have invested.

Perodua is Malaysia’s first and largest EEV manufacturer. We have produced and sold over 800,000 EEVs to date.

Where Industry 4.0 is concerned, Perodua is a firm believer of technology convergence, particularly the integration of communication technology into automotive applications.

Perodua_Advanced Safety Assist (A.S.A.) 2.0 (1)We have already made considerable leaps in this area with regard to our products. On autonomous technology, Perodua, guided by our technical and technology partner Daihatsu Motor Company of Japan, has laid the foundation with its Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) suite of driver assistance systems and crucially, we have made it accessible to the masses.

This technology will be further improved in line with our aim to provide Malaysians with mobility that offers even greater safety and value.”
