Sime Darby Swedish Auto_Volvo Car_3S Outlet_LaunchVolvo Car Malaysia has officially launched another new Volvo 3S centre (for sales, services and spare parts) in Ara Damansara, Selangor. This Volvo 3S centre is also operated by the brand’s latest partner, Sime Darby Swedish Auto.

Volvo Virtual Reality Studio_Volvo Retail Experience_ShowroomSituated in the fairly new area called Sime Darby Motors City, the new four-storey outlet is a state-of-the-art 3S centre that is built according to Volvo Car’s retail standard – the Volvo Retail Experience (VRE). It is also the first 3S Centre to be equipped with a VR Studio (Virtual Reality Studio) as well as a “Reception at the Counter” bay.

Located at the rear of the building, “Reception at the Counter” is a service provided by Sime Darby Swedish Auto for Volvo owners to drive in to without booking a prior appointment, e.g. when the owner has a concern about the vehicle or has some free time for a quick service. The outlet has two service bays dedicated to this service, as well as advisors who will attend to the impromptu visit and advise on the necessary work required.

Volvo Cars_Showroom_Reception_WelcomeThere is a team of eight highly skilled personnel who will manage the eight repair and service bays, of which two are for “Reception at the Counter”.

Besides the showroom at the ground floor, and the service centre, there is also a car detailing area spread across the second and third floors, with a wheel alignment and balancing zone located on the fourth floor.

Nalin Jain, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia said that having ensured a solid footprint on Malaysian soil since 1966, the Swedish automaker has been continuously looking to expand its presence nationwide with a like-minded partner.

Nalin Jain_Volvo Car Malaysia_Managing Director“Building off our accomplishments in 2018 and further growth in 2019, Volvo is set to have a great 2020. The partnership we have with premium dealers such as Sime Darby Swedish Auto is the key to expanding the Volvo brand’s Swedish-inspired ideals and heritage especially within regard to its retail experience, new car sales and customer service improvement. There is an amazing potential”, said Nalin.

The Volvo 3S centre is expected to build on the Swedish automaker’s efforts to deliver the brand’s vision to the market and bolster customer confidence as Volvo Car Malaysia grows from strength to strength.

Andrew Basham_Managing Director_Sime Darby MotorsAndrew Basham, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors said “From the start of our relationship with Volvo Cars Malaysia, it was imperative that we focus of delivering peak customer satisfaction and this is reflected in the many offerings at our 3S centre”.

Customer parking bays will also be equipped with a designated Electric Vehicle Charger which aligns with Volvo’s goals for environmental sustainability through the introduction and promotion of clean energy technologies.

Basham added that the partnership with Volvo is a meeting of minds, as the principles of sustainability of Volvo are perfectly aligned to that of Sime Darby Motors. “We are going digital and just one way this is expressed is through our Digital Silent Salesman (DSS) platform which means that even price lists will be shared digitally”, Basham said. Going paperless is one of the outlet’s first initiatives for sustainability.

Sime Darby Motors is one of the largest automotive groups in the Asia Pacific region and SDM is the leading automotive and luxury marque player in Asia Pacific with over 40 years in the industry.

Volvo Ara Damansara is located at Block 6, Sime Darby Motors City, 6 Jalan PJU 1A/7, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

BMW Group Malaysia_BMW_MINI_Plug-in Hybrid_PHEV_Electromobility_2019In 2019, BMW Group Malaysia delivered a combined total of 11,657 units of its BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad vehicles, from the introduction of 32 new model variants from across the brands. Out of the 32 models, four are electrified models. In Malaysia, this German premium automaker continues to reinforce its position as the leading e-mobility provider, selling a total of 3,148 electrified BMW and MINI vehicles last year.

BMW Group Malaysia_Harald HoelzlThis brings the number of electrified BMW Group vehicles to over 17,000 units sold in the country since 2015. In comparison, BMW and MINI delivered a total of 145,815 electrified vehicles globally in 2019. “Against the backdrop of a challenging year for the automotive sector, we are proud to have achieved such success within the electrified segment in Malaysia and across the globe – which reaffirms our optimism for the year ahead. We are committed to continue leading the charge for electromobility in Malaysia, especially in light of the upcoming National Automotive Policy announcement that will see electrified vehicles play a prominent role in propelling our automotive sector to greater heights,” said Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.

BMW Group Malaysia_ i Charging Facilities_ChargEV LocationsAlthough the success of BMW Group reinforces the steady uptake of electromobility in Malaysia, there is still room for improvement. New technology is never cheap to implement and e-mobility requires heavy long-term investments in infrastructure. To help further the e-mobility agenda in the country, BMW Group Malaysia had initiated and involved itself in infrastructure expansion. In 2019, 18 new BMW i Charging Facilities were established across the country.

That makes the total of over 30 BMW charging facilities in Malaysia, built in just over three years. Initiatives like this can only go as far or grow as big as governmental support allows, as this is heavy investment and commitment on the part of the company.

The New BMW 330i M Sport_Malaysia_2019That aside, last year, BMW sold 9,300 vehicles in Malaysia last year, down from five-figure sales in 2018. This is somewhat surprising as demand for premium brands is largely inelastic. Some may attribute this to many consumers having taken advantage of the tax holiday in 2018 to buy their cars, but BMW sales the year before (2017) were also in the five-figure range when there was no tax holiday.

Speculations aside, the 3 Series remains the brand’s top sales contributor with 2,514 units delivered. Of this number, over 1,000 was the BMW 330e M Sport plug-in hybrid, which drew buyers due to the attractive value afforded by government incentives. Another key contributor to BMW’s total deliveries in 2019 was the BMW 5 Series which saw over 2,000 new owners.

BMW_eDrive_Data_Screen_ConsumptionDemand for SUVs remain strong in the market as well and BMW managed to deliver 3,985 units of the X family of SUVs to buyers. The BMW X3 was the highest contributing model for the year, with a delivery of 1,354 units, followed closely by the BMW X1 with 1,331 deliveries. The electrified BMW X5 xDrive40e also made up 24% (975 units) of total deliveries for the BMW X family, making it the third bestselling X model in 2019.

MINI Cooper S_Countryman_Sports_Plug-in HybridOn a more minor scale, the MINI brand moved 1,142 vehicles last year, with the MINI Countryman contributing more than half of total deliveries (685 units). At the same time, BMW Motorrad delivered 1,125 motorcycles. The key contributor to growth remains the Adventure segment with over 600 bikes sold.

The New BMW F 750 GS (2)_BMW Motorrad MalaysiaGlobally, the BMW Group enjoyed its ninth consecutive record year in 2019 with 2,520,307 vehicles delivered. The BMW brand reported a new all-time high last year, with a total of 2,168,516 delivered worldwide, in contrast to the contraction experienced in Malaysia.

Worldwide MINI brand deliveries totalled 346,639 units in 2019, while BMW Motorrad delivered 175,162 motorcycles to new owners.

For 2020, BMW Group Malaysia will continue driving its “Story of Visionary Mobility” forward, with a clear and continued commitment to drive initiatives for innovation, local assembly capabilities, and awareness on new and clean technology for the automotive industry as well as developing the infrastructure for premium vehicles in the country.

BMW Group Malaysia_Sime Darby Auto Engineering Engine Assembly_Factory_KedahBMW Group Malaysia has not only invested in the local assembly of vehicles for domestic consumption, it also exports to regional markets. Aiding this move is the Engine Assembly Facility, which is a joint initiative with the Sime Darby group.

Initiatives like this are not simple nor short term as it takes time and money over long periods to establish and see returns. Businesses also need to take into account the supply chain, volume and market potential before they make such investments. Also, it can take manufacturers up to five years or more to plan out the product line-up so it is a huge commitment for the long term for any manufacturer to set up a production base. But as we have seen recently with other brands, pulling out of a market takes a much shorter time than establishing it.

Management of BMW Group Malaysia_2020“This year begins a new chapter for us and the nation in the Story of Visionary Mobility. 2020 is building up to be an exciting year of change in the automotive sector and we are thrilled to be a part of it. On behalf of BMW Group Malaysia, I would like to thank and extend our appreciation to all our customers, employees and dealer representatives in our network for our achievement, especially in challenging times. It clearly demonstrates the strength and resilience as One Team!” said Hoelzl.

The New BMW M2 Competition (14)We are expecting the new National Automotive Policy (NAP) to be announced soon and it will be to our interest as a nation, as well as to businesses like BMW Group, how defined and welcoming the map is for attracting further investments and developing the automotive industry in Malaysia into a competitive regional and/or global player. This does not just involve having more automotive brands but bringing in more of the component makers, engineering and design houses, etc to support the respective brands in other markets.

The effect of the Covid-19 outbreak shows how vulnerable supply chains can be when industries rely heavily on one production base. We have also seen a similar effect when natural calamities hit other major production bases. This is potentially an attractive proposition to market to foreign companies to place part of their operations here. But to draw the horse here, we need carrots.

Last weekend, the Toyota Vios Challenge race was held during the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival at Stadium Batu Kawan in Penang. Round 3 of the Vios Challenge at Batu Kawan is the penultimate race for Season 3 and it did not disappoint with plenty of thrills for the crowd.

Super Sporting Class

Toyota Gazoo Racing_Vios Challenge_Super Sporting Class_RaceIn Race 1 of the Super Sporting class for professional racers, 23 Motors’ Tengku Djan led the race from pole  to chequered flag, finishing five seconds clear of Laser Motor Racing’s Mark Darwin and Dream Chaser’s Brendan Paul Anthony.

Kegani Racing’s Kenny Lee was running second at the start behind Djan before he clipped the wall on Lap 9 and ended his charge. This brought out the safety car for four laps and erased Djan’s lead, and also promoted Mark and Brendan into second and third positions respectively.

In Race 2 on the second day of the challenge, Team Telagamas Toyota driver, Freddie Ang emerged victorious, beating Toyotsu’s William Ho as well as defending class champion Boy Wong.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival_Vios Challenge_Super Sporting Class_Freddie Ang_Telagamas ToyotaFreddie had a terrific start and led the 22-lap race to the finish, with William running close behind but never had the opportunity to overtake. Ho also decided to not take unnecessary risks and settle for second spot to take the fight for the championship into the next round. Freddie is currently third in the overall point standings and is still in the fight for the overall championship with two races (Round 4) remaining in the season.

Tengku Djan did not have a good race on the second day as he made contact with a barrier and damaged his rear right wheel forcing him to pit and putting him two laps down.

Sporting Class

Toyota Gazoo Racing_Vios Challenge_Race_Malaysia_Hayden HaikalOn the first day, Mirza Syahmi Mahzan of Aylezo Motorsports started the 22-lap race from pole, ahead of S&D Motorsports’ Hayden Haikal, Panglima City Racing Team’s Kenneth Koh and Crestmax Motorsports’ Adam Khalid. However, a mistake on Lap 5 put Mirza in the wall and gave 16-year-old Hayden the lead.

Hayden consolidates his position at the top of the overall standings in the Sporting class, a category for amateur racers. “My aim is to finish in the points and honestly I am not really thinking of the overall championship,” he said.

In Race 2, S&D Tama Motorsports’ Tom Goh started at the front with Dream Chaser’s Bradley Benedict Anthony, Crestmax Motorsports’ Adam Khalid, SMS Motorsports’ Haji Sutan Mustaffa Salihin and Panglima City Racing Team’s Kenneth Koh chasing.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival_Vios Challenge_Sporting Class_Penang_Bradley Benedict AnthonyThe race however, was stopped in the second lap after a 6-car pile-up. Four cars were out of the race at the safety car restart as Tom continued his dominant drive and built a gap of over two seconds as Haji Sutan and Bradley Benedict were busy battling for second place. Bradley eventually passed Haji Sutan on Lap 9 and began hunting down Tom.

The safety car was deployed again when Shanmuganathan Arumugam spun his car, and this allowed Bradley to close in on Tom. With two laps to go, after the safety car exited the track, Bradley mounted a last minute challenge which put him in the lead two corners from the chequered flag to claim his first race victory of the season.

Promotional Class

Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival_Promotional Class_Vios Challenge_MalaysiaRace 1 started under a safety car due to rain but Shawn Lee quickly got on the pace to lead from start to finish. TV presenter Nabil Ahmad and actor Shukri Yahaya finished in second and third respectively. Singer Nabila Razali finished fourth, the fastest of the female celebrity drivers, ahead of fellow singer Wany Hasrita and actress Janna Nick in sixth.

In Race 2, Shukri Yahaya, Nabil Ahmad and Shawn Lee again made up the top three positions in an equally exciting 20-lap race. Shukri was the biggest gainer at the start, jumping from fourth on the grid to second place, passing singers Nabila Razali and Wany Hasrita who were caught off-guard. Actress Janna Nick made the most of her pole position to lead the race for two laps before having to yield to Shukri who was clearly running a faster pace.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival_Vios Challenge_Promotional Class_Shukri Yahaya_Nabil AhmadBy Lap 4, Nabil too made a move to claim second from Janna who by then had to fend off a further challenge from Shawn. Janna defended well and put up her best driving yet this season but slight contact with Shawn four laps from the finish line spun her around into oncoming traffic. Actress Diana Danielle and Nabila managed to avoid hitting Janna’s car but actor Syafiq Kyle drove straight into her.

“I wasn’t expecting to win but I pounced on the opportunity when Wany and Nabila made a slow start,” said Shukri. “It was my first win this season and I’m really pleased with that.”

For fans in Penang, the excitement of the TGR Festival included the display and test drive of Toyota’s fleet of new vehicles, a drift performance by Japanese drifters courtesy of Toyo Tires, a racing simulator challenge, stage games, celebrity performances, promotional activities, lucky draws, the sale of merchandise, and a Super Fans Signing Session for a chance to mingle with the celebrities racing in the Promotional class.

Other attractions included a morning fun run, zumba fitness session, a fleet of motorcycles and merchandise on display and sale by Harley Davidson and Moto Guzzi, a Beyblade competition, the sale of Hot Wheels die cast models, a concert by popular local band Hujan, and a display by the Art of Speed.

As an added bonus, all vehicles purchased during the two-day event also came with a RM200 complimentary service voucher.

The final round of the Vios Challenge is scheduled for April 2020 at the Sepang International Circuit.

First made available in 1976 as Honda’s second global model, the Accord is known for its premium appeal and styling. The ninth generation Accord was launched in Malaysia in 2013 and saw more than 32,500 units sold here, making it the market leader in its segment. In 2017, Honda Malaysia introduced the brand’s Next Generation Advanced Safety feature i.e. Honda SENSING in the ninth generation Accord which further redefined the premium features in its class.

In keeping with its aim to raise the bar in D-segment, the 10th generation Accord comes with the full suite of Honda SENSING safety features. The Next Generation Advanced Technology offered can be placed in three categories:

Driver Cruising Aid : Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC); Low Speed Follow (LSF); Auto High-Beam (AHB)

Frontal Collision Deterrence : Forward Collision Warning (FCW); Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)

Side Collision Deterrence : Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS); Road Departure Mitigation (RDM); Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

We are confident that the All-New Accord will bring immense excitement to the market, especially those who seek a sedan with complete premium package.”

Honda Accord_2020_Front ViewProviding power to the new Accord is an enhanced 1.5L VTEC Turbocharged engine, which is a first for the flagship model. The turbocharged engine is claimed to be more efficient in power distribution and provides improved fuel efficiency.

The new Accord also gets a fastback styling as opposed to the usual three-box sedan style. This has redefined the segment and made it more appealing to the market while maintaining the Accord’s DNA of sophistication. Its new exterior design comes with sharp and stylish full LED headlights and tail lights to further emphasize its premium design. Meanwhile, its wider stance, lower hood, lower and longer roofline seek to achieve greater dynamic presence. Car_StockyardIf you are in the market to buy a used vehicle, or to sell one, muv Marketplace Sdn Bhd has a new platform for you, to buy or sell with peace of mind. muv stands for “Marketplace for Used Vehicles” and the company has launched Malaysia’s first and largest self-listing vehicle bidding platform – muvbid.

muvbid is an online bidding platform that is available 24/7 and provides easy and transparent end-to-end services, including financing for buyers. muvbid also allows individuals to upload their car for listing on its platform by themselves to reach thousands of potential buyers at any time.

“In Malaysia, buying and selling a used car is such a troublesome process that most people will just opt for the easy way out by trading in for their next purchase. At muv we hope to address this by becoming their facilitator and providing a platform for them to BUY and SELL their cars with ease, not just to list their cars and wait for potential buyers,” commented Andy Teh, CEO of muv. Andy is a startup industry expert with years of experience in digital marketing, and is aiming to make an impact in the used vehicles market.

muv Verified_Car Inspection_muvbid_MalaysiaIn order to provide more peace-of-mind to buyers, and to enhance its position as the premier platform for used cars, muvbid offers “muv Verified”. This is a value-added service introduced to sellers so they can get their cars inspected and verified by muv professionals at muv hubs nationwide. Alternatively, sellers who can’t find the time to get to these hubs can opt for muv mobile inspectors to come to you (for a small fee of RM50 paid via the muv website). This mobile service is currently available in the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor.

Further enhancing muvbid’s end-to-end solutions, muv will facilitate the buying and selling process by connecting the buyer and seller on a single platform, whether they are used car dealers or individual owners who may or may not require financing.

If required, muv will assist with financing applications and once financing is successful or once payment for the car is organized, muv will help with the necessary paperwork such as ownership transfer, Puspakom inspection, road tax and insurance.

Used Cars_muv“With the launch of muvbid, anyone can sell and bid for the car they are interested in anytime, anywhere. Sellers can self-list their cars and potential buyers can then place bids of the price they are willing to pay for the cars.

“We even conduct free verification inspections on listed cars via “muv Verified” if the seller chooses to. The muv Verified badge provides potential buyers the assurance that the said vehicle’s condition has been inspected and verified as per what the seller has declared,” Teh elaborated.

To recap, these are the key features of muvbid:

  • Malaysia’s first and largest 24/7 self-listing vehicle bidding platform
    • Sell your car anytime, anywhere – muvbid allows sellers to list vehicles themselves at their convenience by simply registering and logging on to www.muv-x.com.
  • Enhanced online buying and selling experience
    • muvbid will facilitate the entire buying and selling process by connecting the buyer and seller on one platform, including financing if required.
    • muvbid allows buyers to offer what they are willing to pay for the used vehicle via bids.
    • For sellers who want a quick experience or already have a price in mind, they can also opt to include a “Buy It Now” price on their listing.
  • A platform with end-to-end services to buyers and sellers
    • Buying and selling a vehicle in Malaysia can be a time-consuming process for those who are not familiar with it. For example, vehicles need to be sent to Puspakom for inspection, and the ownership transfer process requires your thumbprint for verification at JPJ.
    • muv will help with all the necessary paperwork such as ownership transfer, Puspakom inspection, road tax and insurance, once financing or payment is confirmed.
    • muv also assists with financing applications, if required.
  • Free verification inspections on listed cars via “muv Verified” when you send your car to a muv hub
    • To help provide a more complete picture of the vehicle to the potential buyer / bidder, sellers  can bring their vehicle to a muv hub for inspection and verification on the vehicle’s condition. Vehicles that have been verified will receive a “muv Verified” badge on the website.
    • For sellers who are unable to head to a muv hub, muv offers a mobile verification inspection service (currently available in the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor) for a small sum of RM50.
  • Listing on muvbid is FREE*
    • While there is cost to the seller to list their car for sale, there will be a RM140 charge for the Puspakom B5 inspection upon confirmation of a buyer. This inspection charge will be deducted from the selling price of the car (upon payment) and is a requirement of the industry for any vehicle ownership transfer.
  • Convenient for Corporations and SMEs to sell off fleet vehicles
    • Corporations, organisations and SMEs can list their own fleet vehicles in the website for sale.
They can also seek assistance from muv via their hotline – 018 208 8089

This urban development and traffic management challenge will use Kuala Lumpur as the base city and is the region’s first global challenge to attract innovative, data-driven entries from global participants. The aim of CATCH is to raise efficiency in urban planning, and drive forward the future of mobility.

This partnership between TMF and MDEC will enable Kuala Lumpur to take the lead in developing next-gen urban development and city mobility management for the region.

Participants of CATCH will have eight months to conceptualize and develop solutions that are dynamic, intelligent and data-driven to design future city infrastructures and to address mobility challenges in Kuala Lumpur. Anyone, from start-ups to academic and research institutions to corporations, and even the general public can participate.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA“TMF was set up to addressmobility issues around the world, using a unique approach driven by sustainability, innovation and partnership.
