Subang Jaya, 17 January 2019 – Proton has announced a service fix to replace the passenger airbag inflator for the current generation Proton Perdana, following a similar recall announcement by Honda Motor Company regarding the passenger airbag inflator on the Honda Accord. This is a precautionary measure as the model is based on the Honda Accord and affects cars built from 2012 to the end of August 2018.

Proton Perdana MediaAccording to the company, a total of 6,432 units of the Proton Perdana are affected. A notice regarding this issue will be sent to all affected owners, but if you had bought your Perdana used, it is best that you consult with Proton or its authorised service centre, as it may not have your contact information.

The service fix is part of a global initiative for cars equipped with Takata airbags. All action taken is in accordance with the latest Defect Information Report (DIR) issued by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) of America that requires the replacement of non-desiccated passenger airbag inflators.

The company would like to reassure all customers the exercise does not affect any other Proton models as the airbags used are supplied by a different vendor. Stringent controls are in place to ensure customer safety, which is a key priority for Proton and any inconvenience caused is deeply regrettable.

“The safety of our owners is of the utmost importance to Proton. All Proton Perdana owners will be informed of the matter and are advised to call our designated service centres to book an appointment for the replacement of the passenger airbag in their cars. Cars built after 31 August 2018 are unaffected by the service fix while replacement of the inflator will take approximately one hour and will be performed free of charge,” said Dato’ Radzaif Mohamed, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Proton.

Customers are advised to call Proton’s Customer Care Hotline, 1-800-888-398 or email customercare@proton.com for any enquiries and assistance.

What’s This?

Subaru XV_Crossover_MalaysiaThe new Subaru XV can be easily mistaken for the Impreza, particularly the hatchback (which looks more like a wagon) variant. And this is how it stands out in a market of soft crossovers playing dress-up as rugged four-wheel-drive SUVs. Subaru took things a little differently with the XV. Instead of putting out another box-type vehicle, it took one of its cars, increased its ground clearance with jacked-up suspension, slapped some rugged cladding on it and voila! You get a rugged urban vehicle that also plays well off the tarmac, without the high R&D costs to produce a completely new vehicle. The Impreza is already a four-wheel drive anyway.

The unit we reviewed is the range-topping Subaru XV 2.0i-P. The differences with the cheaper 2.0i variant are mainly cosmetic as Subaru made sure its safety features are available to both.

What About It?

Subaru XV 2.0i-P_Malaysia_DisplayA cursory look at the old XV will lead you to believe the new XV is a facelift. And this is how Subaru deceives with its evolutionary take of the XV design, even with its incorporation of its new ‘Dynamic x Solid’ philosophy. The new XV is actually built on the new Subaru Global Platform (SGP) and when the old and new are placed beside each other, you will see that the new XV has benefitted from and increase in size; it is now a little longer and wider, with a lower centre of gravity but still keeping to the same height and ground clearance.

With new elongated headlamp and tail lamp design, reprofiled bumpers and front grille, the XV gets a more chiseled but familiar look despite its growth in size.

What’s Inside?

The bigger SGP platform has enabled Subaru engineers to design a larger cabin for better passenger comfort. Subaru XV_Boot Space_MalaysiaImprovements include better shoulder room for the front passengers, and extra legroom for the rear. The downside for me is the minimal increase in boot space over the old model. It may only have 345 litres of cargo volume but the extra vehicle width has allowed the designers to carve out a wider boot opening for better access. And if you are a golfer, you will be glad to know that the boot easily fits three golf bags without them blocking driving visibility.

The retractable tonneau cover keeps the contents of your cargo space under wraps and it and can be easily taken out and stowed in the boot when you need to carry bulky items. If the boot still isn’t big enough for you, the XV has roof rails as standard and roof-mounted storage is easily accessible thanks to the low roof height. A flat platform at the base of the rear seat also lets you safely and easily stand to access rooftop storage. Speaking of space, the switch to an electronic parking brake has freed up more space in the front for cup holders.

The Impreza link is not just on the exterior but the interior as well. The dashboard is also derived from the Impreza and elevates the interior quality and ambience compared with the previous XV. The Impreza-derived steering wheel is comfortable to hold and holds easy access to various features like audio, cruise control, and vehicle information.

Subaru XV 2017, X-MODE, Info DisplayKey vehicle information such as trip data, vehicle pitch angle, temperature and climate control, is displayed on the on the 6.3″ multi-info display that sits atop the dashboard. The other display screen is below and is an 8″ touchscreen entertainment unit that serves up entertainment and navigation.

Despite this unit being the premium variant, the seats are not full leather but are mixed with fabric and accented with orange stitching like the rest of the interior. Only the driver’s seat is electrically adjustable.

The larger platform base also allows for a significantly bigger fuel tank i.e. 63 litres vs 50 litres of the old one.

What’s Underneath?

Subaru Boxer Engine, Motor Image MalaysiaStandard in any modern-day Subaru is its boxer engine which sits low in the engine bay thus giving the car a lower centre of gravity and more stability. The new engine in this XV may still be a 2.0L 4-cylinder unit but this one has had a lot of revisions done.

The new engine is 12 kg lighter, has direct injection and is slightly more powerful with 156 PS and 196 Nm. This power is sent to the famed Symmetrical All Wheel Drive system by an improved 7-speed Lineartronic CVT which has been lightened by about 8 kg.

What’s It Like?

The new platform has given the XV more than just extra space and improved looks. Torsional rigidity has improved by about 70% and allows for better driving composure and control. Car control also comes in the form of the brand’s signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, and while you may argue that not everyone takes their vehicles off-road, it is a very appreciated feature especially when driving in the wet.

For those who do want to take the XV off-road, the X-Mode function works with the all-wheel drive system to control the power delivery to the wheels and brakes. We are of course not talking about such extremes as the Rainforest Challenge or the Dakar Rally, but that muddy or sandy road can now be traversed without much worry.

Subaru XV_Slalom_Malaysia_Test DriveBack on sensible tarmac, the XV feels agile and surefooted thanks to the all-wheel drive system and Active Torque Vectoring which minimises wheel spin. The naturally low centre of gravity afforded by the flat boxer engine also contributes to the car’s stability.

In terms of comfort, the new XV has improved noise insulation for a quieter cabin. The suspension system has also been tweaked to offer a more supple ride that is still firm enough to take corners in an aggressive manner. The ride and handling is notably better than the previous model which itself was not too bad for its time.

What some people will pick on is the company’s decision to use a CVT (continuously variable transmission) instead of a conventional automatic transmission. Thankfully, Subaru’s Lineatronic CVT is one of the better ones in the market and has a ‘stepped’ feel that mimics the sensation of a conventional gearbox. CVTs are typically used to aid fuel economy, so that seems like a plus. The official average fuel consumption is 7.3 litres per 100 km.

Other notable features include Vehicle Dynamics Control System, Hill Hold, Brake Assist, Brake Override, paddle shifters, rear view camera, keyless entry and start, steering responsive headlamps, front, side and curtain airbags, driver’s knee airbag, dual zone climate control and PIN code access. The last feature is a useful one if you are the active type as it allows you to lock the key fob inside the car and go off for your activities. You will not have to worry about losing your key or damaging it on a hike, and you can later unlock the car with a PIN code.

Who Is It For?

I would rate the Subaru XV the best all-rounder in its segment and it should please any one (or any family) with its capability and value. It does not have ultra fancy toys like 20 speakers or head-up display, but there is enough to keep you satisfied. It can also take on much tougher terrain than the usual soft-roaders, so that picnic at that particular secluded beach seems more possible now.

How Much?

The Subaru XV 2.0i-P retails for RM137,788 (on the road without insurance) and covered with a 5-year warranty and 5-year service labour. It currently shares the same retail price with the larger Forester, but dealers do occasionally have deals on the XV.

All Porsche vehicles sold via SDAP come with a four-year warranty and free maintenance package, which includes complimentary service, labour and parts.

“Together with Porsche Asia Pacific, the Premium Package for the Cayenne and Panamera is an initiative to enrich the product substance to elevate the customer’s ownership experience even further. SDAP is also making strategic investments and expanding its sales network. The upcoming Porsche Centre Johor Bahru will assure customers in the southern region have an outstanding ownership experience, while later this year, SDAP will also open a brand new Porsche Centre in Ara Damansara.

This expands the brand’s nationwide sales network to four Porsche Centres by 2020, the year that Porsche anticipates to launch its first fully-electric vehicle in Malaysia, the Taycan. The recent opening of the Porsche pop-up store in Penang, which is open to the public until May 2019, also marks the importance of the development of the business in Malaysia. To kickstart 2019, SDAP is organising an Open House on 19 – 20 January 2019 at all Porsche Centres nationwide.

Arthur Willmann, Managing Director of Porsche Asia Pacific, said: “Malaysia is home of the Porsche Experience Centre Sepang, and also one of our most important markets with a strong following for the brand. We are very excited about the future potential here together with SDAP as our long-term partner, especially with regards to an even more competitive model line-up, the expansion of our sales network as well as our electrification strategy. Together we are already looking forward to the introduction of the Taycan, our first fully-electric vehicle, which will come to the market at the beginning of 2020.”

About the Cayenne

The new Cayenne combines even more of the typical Porsche performance with excellent everyday practicality. Its powerful turbo engines, new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox, new chassis systems and innovative display and control concept with total connectivity is taking both sport and comfort to the next level. The Cayenne, with a 3.0-litre turbo engine delivers 250 kW (340 hp), 29 kW (40 hp) more than the previous model. Equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the new Cayenne accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in less than six seconds. This is followed by the Cayenne S, which is powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbo petrol engine, delivering 324 kW (440 hp). It accelerates from zero to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds with Sport Chrono Package.

Porsche Cayenne_Premium Package_Kuala Lumpur_MalaysiaThe Cayenne is based heavily on the iconic 911 sports car: The third generation of this SUV, which has also been enhanced visually, now has mixed tyres and rear-axle steering for the first time. In addition to these typical sports car features, the on-road capabilities are further improved by active all-wheel drive as standard, Porsche 4D Chassis Control, three-chamber air suspension and the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) electronic roll stabilisation system. Despite its significantly extended standard equipment, the Cayenne weighs up to 65 kilograms less than its predecessor and remains perfectly suited to off-road use. For the first time, the Cayenne is available with electric rear-axle steering offering agility on bends and stability when changing lanes at high speeds. The reduced turning circle also makes everyday handling of the SUV easier.

About the Panamera

The Panamera is advancing to become a performance icon of the luxury class. In this transformation, Porsche has systematically improved the Panamera concept – with a four-door car that has been redeveloped and redesigned down to the last detail. Its engines and transmissions have been redesigned, its chassis perfected, and its display and control concept reinterpreted for the future. The new Panamera also extends the borders between the world of ambitious sports cars and the world of comfortable cruising cars with highlights such as rear axle steering, active roll compensation and three-chamber air suspension.

Porsche Panamera_Premium Package_Rear Spoiler_MalaysiaThe second generation Panamera’s engines have been redesigned. They have all been made more powerful, while significantly improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. The new bi-turbo direct injection engines in the Panamera 4S – may be equipped with a permanent all-wheel drive system and a new eight-speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK). A V6 twin-turbo petrol engine with 324 kW (440 hp) drives the Panamera 4S and a V6 turbo petrol engine with 243 kW (330 hp) drives the Panamera entry-level model.

More versatile than any other model in its class, the Panamera 4 Sport Turismo delivers 243 kW (330 hp) and 340 kW (462 hp) drives the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo. With a large tailgate, low loading edge, increased luggage compartment volume and a 4+1 seating concept, the new Panamera Sport Turismo model offers the perfect combination of everyday usability and maximum flexibility.

After some teasing, a preview test drive and some information leak, the Perodua Aruz 7-seater is officially launched in Malaysia. We had posted details of the Aruz earlier when Perodua announced it open for booking, and we are happy to report that there hasn’t been any significant changes to the facts. That should be comforting news to the 2,200 people who placed a booking since Perodua started accepting it on 3 January 2019.

Perodua_Dato Zainal Abidin Ahmad_President & CEO_MalaysiaThis is also the first major event for new Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad who took over the reins from Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh who recently retired. “As a People First company, Perodua has always been about making advanced technology and the latest trends in the automotive world accessible to as many Malaysians as possible,” he commented.

“SUVs are enjoying a big rise globally. Buyers like their versatility, comfort, high driving position, good visibility and increased space while still maintaining a compact footprint. Above all, their appearance projects an active, adventurous and aspirational lifestyle that many desire. With the Perodua Aruz, many more Malaysians can now enjoy the benefits of an SUV, plus advanced features typically found only in pricier vehicles. This makes it among the best-value SUVs on sale today, with space, safety and efficiency elevated,” he added.

First Drive Impressions

Perodua Aruz_1.5L 2NR-VE Dual VVT-i Engine_MalaysiaEarlier on, we were invited to a short drive of the Aruz at Perodua’s test facility, to get a feel of the vehicle. The 1.5-litre 2NR-VE engine is no stranger as it can be found in several vehicles; the same goes for the 4-speed automatic. Power is sufficient to get this 7-seater vehicle going at highway speeds but we think it will be too optimistic for one to make aggressive or brisk overtaking manouevres at high speed, especially when loaded with passengers or goods. The transmission gears down seamlessly when necessary but the engine will roar at higher rpm which is expected given that there are only four gears to work with.

Perodua Aruz 1.5AV_Steering Wheel_Malaysia_LaunchThis however, is not a big problem in town driving as we move from traffic light to traffic light. For your school/tuition or pasar runs, the Aruz should be more than adequate to keep up with traffic flow. Also, the advantage of having a rear-wheel drive configuration means the front wheels have a smaller turning radius which makes the Aruz easy to manouevre in tight spaces.

It should also be frugal in heavy traffic since a 1.5-litre block will burn less fuel at idle; the Aruz is also equipped with an idle stop function which switches off the engine when you fully depress the brake pedal. Furthermore, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated means you are eligible for the petrol subsidy. You can read about a similar drive impression here.

Colors available are Ivory White, Glittering Silver, Electric Blue, Granite Grey and Amazon Green (new).

Currently, Perodua is offering all customers who purchase the Perodua Total Protect Plus motor insurance free Perodua Auto Assist benefits, unlimited unnamed drivers, flood allowance of up to RM1,000 and Personal Accident coverage of up to RM10,000.

Hino Motors Sales (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (HMSM) recently handed over a mini school bus to The Community Chest (TCC), a non-government (NGO) charitable organization. The Hino XZU720L1 Mini Bus (Hino Mini Bus) was bought at a special price by TCC and is meant to be a donation to SJK (T) Kangar in Perlis. The Hino Mini Bus will be used to ferry the students to and from school.

In less urban areas where public transportation is lacking, or where both parents are working and can’t afford time off to send or pick up their school-going children, school attendance can be a challenge. Many children do not have any other choice but to walk or cycle to school and as such are exposed to many dangers. The Hino Mini Bus is intended to make it easier and safer for the children to attend school as well as extra-curricular activities. The aim is to improve the students’ attendance.

“For the past eight years, TCC has been involved in and contributed to numerous school building construction, renovations for upgrading of classrooms and facilities enhancement projects. This bus sponsorship program is The Community Chest’s first initiative in the area of movable asset contribution to school and we are glad to have formed a smart partnership with Hino Motors Sales Malaysia Sdn Bhd in providing this 25-seater school bus benefitting the only Tamil school in Perlis,” said Mr Tan Kong Han, The Community Chest Administrator.

TCC was established by the private sector in 2011 to promote and support education for the Malaysian community. The charitable organization believes education is a strong pillar for future generation development.

The NGO focuses on supporting non-profit learning institutions or those who do not receive sufficient funding from the State or Federal Government or the community. It aims to assist in the establishment, development and advancement of such learning institutions to transform and improve the quality of education in Malaysia.

The Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) of SJK (T) Kangar had submitted their request to TCC for a school bus due to the concerns for the safety of the students.

A simple handover ceremony was held at Hino’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya where Mr. Ken Iwamoto, Managing Director of HMSM, officially presented the bus memento to Mr. Tan Kong Han, the Administrator from TCC. In turn, TCC presented a mock key to Mr. Sreetharan Selwaraju, the Chairman of PIBG SJK (T) Kangar.

“The initiative taken by both parties, TCC and PIBG SJK (T) Kangar, is a great action that may contribute to enhance the pupils comfort and also help less fortune families and those in need,” said Mr. Iwamoto. “Ensuring children’s safety on the road is part of our responsibility. With this initiative, we can increase their safety when traveling on the road to and from school,” he added.

In Malaysia, Hino is the leader in mini bus segment and continues to develop products inline with its tagline, ‘Hino is always about Quality, Durability and Reliability’.

The Hino Mini Bus is equipped with a powerful 156 PS engine and 6-speed manual transmission. Further, the mini bus has Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) features which helps the driver maintain control of the vehicle during emergency braking or braking on slippery roads. These safety features enable the vehicle to stop in a shorter distance than vehicles without them.

The Hino Mini Bus uses tubeless tyres that will prevent instant failure in case of a puncture. This allows the driver to drive an additional distance to a safer place for tyre change. Tubeless tyres also help reduce fuel consumption as they are lighter and have lower rolling resistance. Other safety features in the Hino Mini Bus are Energy-Absorbing Steering Wheel and Speed Limiter setting at 100km/h.

Mr. Iwamoto also declared that all Hino vehicles, including the buses, can run on B10 biodiesel without any changes to any component or service interval.

Furthermore, to comply with the Malaysian government’s Safety, Health and Environment Code of Practice (SHE COP), Hino is taking the initiative to improve the level of professionalism and driving skills for commercial vehicle drivers through its Hino Total Support Customer Center (HTSCC) in Sendayan. At this centre, customers and drivers have the opportunity to undergo the necessary training program that focuses on driver safety, eco-cien driving, and driver familiarisation. These training programmes are aimed to increase the number of skilled drivers here in Malaysia.
