The all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI has been officially launched by Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM). Largely regarded as a very hot hatch, the GTI badge has been providing sporty driving pleasure since it was first launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1975. Of just as great a significance for this latest Golf GTI Mk 8 is its local assembly status, the first of such operations outside of Germany and China.

Volkswagen Golf GTI_2.0 EngineA Golf GTI is expected to be a thrilling ride and the 2.0L TSI turbocharged engine with 245 PS and 370 Nm of torque channeled through a 7-speed wet clutch DSG promises that. The car’s official fuel consumption is recorded at 7 l/100km, and also features engine battery regenerative braking capability. New and unique to the GTI Mk 8 is the Vehicle Dynamics Manager system which allows further driving personalisation including various pre-determined modes as well as individualised settings to choose from.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 8_TrackWe were given a chance to try out the GTI on part of the Sepang track, and although the drive was quite brief, it still provided a taste of the competence of this iconic hot hatch. Briefly, the car’s handling is predictable and you don’t feel like you’re losing control even when you are off the racing line on purpose. There is enough understeer and lean to let you know the boundary. However, it is always advisable to not drive beyond your (or the car’s) capability. A more sensible on-road test drive session can be arranged at a Volkswagen dealership.

Volkswagen Golf GTI_Headlights_DRLThe car comes with some recognisable GTI cues such as the honeycomb grille, the red trim and twin tailpipes. The Mk 8 wears 18” Richmond alloy wheels (with anti-theft bolts) with red brake callipers, and like most new cars, is fitted with full LED headlamps and taillights. The DRL now features a lit strip that visually joins both headlamps.

The interior design of the GTI runs with a minimalist theme. The seats are upholstered in Vienna leather in grey tones and red accents and stitching. The front pair are sport seats with integrated headrest; the driver gets powered lumbar support adjustment and position memory. The dashboard includes a 10.25″ digital cockpit that is paired with a 10″ Discover Media infotainment touchscreen that is angled towards the driver. This is what VW calls the Driver’s Workspace. The digital experience includes multiple cockpit themes, including a GTI-specific skin, haptic touch controls, 3D navigation (with pre-loaded data of Malaysia), wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and an intuitive voice control system activated by the “Hello Volkswagen” phrase or a steering-mounted button. This feature assists in vehicle operations such as audio volume and zonal temperature (by detecting the location source of the voice). The 3-zone Climatronic air-conditioning has 2 main modes i.e. Smart Climate and Classic Climate, and each comes with various helpful functions. It is also equipped with Air Care to filter out pollen, spores, and particulates.

Volkswagen Golf GTI_Centre Console_Start Stop Button_Gear SelectorA notable feature for the driver is the diminutive shift-by-wire gear selector in place of a conventional gear lever. Another smart feature of the vehicle is the quick entry access by automatically unlocking the doors when vehicle key is within the detection zone. The GTI also comes with Tyre Pressure Loss Indicator that warns when there is loss of tyre pressure. For digital convenience, there are a pair each of USB-C ports in front, and USB in the rear. Further, the dual floored boot space provides 374 litres for storage.

Key safety features include ESC (Electronic Stability Control), Post Collision Braking System (that prevents a second collision), Electronic Differential Lock (XDS) that improves traction and reduces understeer, Driver Alert with fatigue detection, and 6 airbags.

Volkswagen Golf_GTI Badge“The GTI is certainly the most iconic three letters in the automotive industry. It has amassed loyal fans globally, and more so in Malaysia where we have a very passionate fanbase. We are proud that we are now rolling it out from our Pekan plant – a historical milestone, really.  The new GTI is full of innovation, and we are sure that it too will set new standards and thrill our customers,” said Erik Winter, Managing Director of VPCM.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 8 is available in 5 colours i.e. metallic: Kings Red and Atlantic Blue; non-metallic: Moonstone Grey; and pearl: Deep Black and Oryx White. The car is priced at RM211,689.54 with the current sales tax exemption. VPCM supports with aftersales care through 3 years free maintenance, 5 years unlimited mileage warranty, and 5 years roadside assistance.

Bookings and test drive arrangements can be made at all authorised Volkswagen dealerships nationwide. Alternatively, you can visit the Volkswagen eShowroom at any time: https://eshowroom.volkswagen.com.my/.

BMW Malaysia has launched 3 new variants of the BMW X3, and 1 new variant of the BMW X4. The refreshed premium SAV (Sports Activity Vehicles) models are all locally assembled and offer a varied choice of powertrains. The new variants of the BMW X3 are the X3 sDrive20i M Sport, X3 xDrive30i M Sport, and X3 xDrive30e M Sport. This family is complemented by the new BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport variant.

The BMW X3 and BMW X4 have been visually updated with larger kidney grilles linked by a central bridge, a new front apron design with vertical air intakes, and a new bumper. Additionally, the headlights have slimmed down by 10 mm and are full-LED technology units. The slightly ascending bonnet, short front overhang and wedge shape of the silhouette visually give hints to the vehicle’s driving dynamics.

The plug-in hybrid version of the BMW X3 can be identified by the charging port cover behind the left front wheel. While dimensions of the new locally assembled variants remain unchanged, the refresh sees the X3 now sporting a modified range of alloy wheels of up to 20″ in size, as well as full-LED taillights with 3D contouring along the sides, as well as larger tailpipes. For the refreshed BMW X4, the coupe-like roofline is maintained and it gets vertically positioned reflectors as well as a rear bumper with new inserts. Both the X3 and X4 get free-form exhaust tips.

Further, the M Sport Package is available as standard in the new variants of the BMW X3 and X4 and offers noticeably upgraded equipment levels, with a streamlined range of vehicle configurations. This includes the larger air intakes and specific front aprons in both models, along with new colour offerings, rims, and interior trim finishers.

Inside, the BMW X3 and X4 have been updated with a larger 10.25″ Control Display touchscreen, zinc-plated elements in the air vents, and new control elements beneath the display in the centre console. The new models also feature premium leather sport seats with pronounced side bolsters. The BMW Live Cockpit Plus with black panel technology, analogue circular dials and a 5.1″ display in the instrument cluster are fitted in the BMW X3 sDrive20i, while the others get BMW Live Cockpit Professional as standard.

All new variants of the X3 and X4 are powered by the BMW Operating System 7, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and a wide range of optional BMW Connected packages. Software upgrades are done over-the-air to ensure the vehicles are always running the latest software. Further, the features of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant have been significantly expanded. It now allows you to open windows and adjust the air conditioning system using voice commands. Also new is BMW Maps, a cloud-based navigation system which combines increased precision with simplified destination entry points and more comprehensive traffic updates.

Additionally, the BMW X3 xDrive30e has details in BMW i Blue, such as the ring around the BMW logo, to hint at the model’s PHEV capability. The battery in the X3 xDrive30e is capable of powering this SAV in all-electric mode for up to 50 km (WLTP) driving range, and can be charged either by the internal combustion engine (ICE) while on the move or a wall charger.

Meanwhile, the 2 petrol variants of the X3 i.e. sDrive20i and xDrive30i are powered by a 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine capable of a maximum output of 184 hp and 300 Nm of torque, and 252 hp and 350 Nm respectively. The X3 sDrive20i can do 0 – 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 215 km/h, while the X3 xDrive30i officially records 6.3 seconds and 240 km/h respectively. Motion is aided by an 8-speed Steptronic transmission with Automatic Hold Function for the sDrive20i variant while the xDrive30i gets an 8-speed Steptronic Sport unit.

In tune with its Sheer Driving Pleasure promise, the vehicles feature a low centre of gravity, 50/50 axle weight distribution, advanced chassis and xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system. The xDrive variants are all-wheel-drive while the sDrive rotates the rear wheels for different driving preferences. Moreover, the M Sport suspension has specific spring and damper tuning for even more dynamic handling. On the other hand, the X4 xDrive30i is equipped with adaptive suspension.

For additional safety, the driving assistance systems include the Driving Assistant that has Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Front Collision Warning with brake intervention as standard. The new variants are also equipped with Parking Assistant, including the Reversing Assistant. Exclusive to the X3 xDrive30e is the Parking Assistant Plus with Park Assist for end-on and parallel parking spaces including automatic exiting. Further, Active Park Distance Control is available in the PHEV variant, along with the lateral parking aid.

“The BMW X portfolio has long been revered across the globe and especially so in Malaysia for producing some of the most coveted premium Sports Activity Vehicles. Last year, the BMW X portfolio recorded over 3,200 deliveries in Malaysia – contributing to just over 38% of total deliveries from the BMW brand. This success of the BMW X portfolio signals a strong market within the country, in turn affirming our confidence in expanding and revolutionising the automotive industry here with more local assembly facilities and infrastructure,” commented Hans de Visser, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia. “As we move into a year full of electrification possibilities, BMW Group Malaysia is also thrilled to electrify our locally-assembled BMW X3 for the very first time, while offering different powertrain options for those who prefer different driving experiences. When it comes to fuel or service stations, what comes to mind is usually the fuel products or the convenience stores. But the toilet is actually one of the most important features of a service station (the most important, when you have an emergency). As such, Petron Malaysia, had in 2018, initiated the “Tandas Kita Bersih” programme with the aim to provide the comfort of clean toilets to customers.

Petron’s “Tandas Kita Bersih” is an effort to provide a comfortable station environment to get road users to “Jom Singgah Petron”. As a result of this initiative, 113 Petron service stations in 8 states (Johor, Kedah, Pahang, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Terengganu and Wilayah Persekutuan) have received 5-star ratings from local councils for maintaining clean and functional toilets.

Petron_Petrol Station_Treats_Convenience Store“These ratings acknowledge our commitment to customer service excellence. Our customers’ needs and expectations are important to us and we want them to have a positive experience each time they visit a Petron service station. Our goal is to make our stations the preferred pit-stop for everyone,” said Choong Kum Choy, Petron Head of Retail & Commercial Business.

The “Tandas Kita Bersih” programme has since evolved from a marketing campaign to becoming a full-fledged system that sets the standards and guidelines for all Petron stations. The programme was developed in consultation with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), and continues under its “Fuel Happy” programme to ensure all its service stations are clean, dry, and operational.Petron_Fuel Pump_Treats Convenience Store_Toilet

Petron’s clean toilet programme has proven to be successful, with Petron service stations actively participating in the national-level competition for clean toilets under KPKT. Over the years, multiple service stations including Petron Batu Burok, Terengganu; Petron Tongkang Pecah, Johor; and Petron Senawang 2, Negeri Sembilan have won 1st place in the National Best Toilet Award under the Service Station category.

Mokhtar Paunari, the dealer of Petron Senawang 2, whose station won 1st place in the 2019 National Clean Public Toilet Competition – Service Station Category commented, “Commitment, teamwork, and consistency are the key factors in ensuring that our toilet achieves the standard of ‘model toilet’ for petrol stations in the country.”

For Azmin bin Che Mat, dealer of Petron Rantau Panjang, winning 3rd place for the best public toilet in the Kelantan state competition is a great achievement. “I want to offer the best service to our customers, and I want our customers to feel comfortable when they are here to use the services we offer.” Going the extra mile for his customers, Azmin appointed a dedicated janitor to maintain the cleanliness of the restrooms.

The “Tandas Kita Bersih” programme also supports Petron’s sustainability aspiration of promoting a culture of good sanitation at all Petron service stations. This is in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which ensures access to clean water and good sanitation for all.

Choong added, “We applaud our dealers for stepping up to the challenge to achieve and maintain the highest standards of service for our customers. Having clean toilets shows that we care about every aspect of our customers’ experience at our stations.”

Toyota Vios GR-S_DRL_Fog LightToyota is starting 2022 on a happy note. According to UMW Toyota Motor, the sales performance for 2021 enabled the Toyota brand to once again hold the No. 1 position in the non-national segment after 6 years. In January 2022, the combined Toyota and Lexus sales amounted to 7,528 vehicles, which represents a marked increase of 96% compared to the same period last year (3,845).

The Toyota Hilux pick-up was the best-selling model, accounting for 38% of January’s sales, while the Vios was the best-selling car, making up 28% of the month’s sales.

Moving forward, the company will continue to promote its sustainable mobility effort in line with Toyota’s global agenda to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This effort was officially kickstarted with the Corolla Cross Hybrid launched last month. This also marked an incredible milestone for UMW Toyota Motor as it is the first locally assembled hybrid vehicle with the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform.

“Since it was made available for booking in October last year, the Corolla Cross Hybrid was met with positive response, accounting for more than 40% of the total sales of the Corolla Cross. This shows that Malaysians are in support of environmental sustainability and are taking their first step towards going green through hybrid electric vehicles. We urge our customers to place their bookings early in order to avoid missing out on the Sales and Service Tax (SST) exemption for better savings,” said Ravindran K, President of UMW Toyota Motor.Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid_Graphic

The Corolla Cross Hybrid is priced at RM136,550 (without insurance) and is covered with a 5-year, unlimited mileage factory warranty on top of a separate 8-year, unlimited mileage warranty on the hybrid battery pack, inverter and Power Management Control Unit. There is also the option to extend the latter warranty for another 2 years to make it an even 10, the first of such warranty available locally. The hybrid system comes with the 4th generation Toyota Hybrid Electric System battery that is designed to last the vehicle’s life and satisfy 5 critical parameters i.e. safety, long life service, high level of quality, affordable high quality products and high level performance.

To continue its positive sales momentum, UMW Toyota Motor is running the ‘Stay Ahead’ campaign which offers savings of up to RM4,500. This promotion features the Malaysian-favourite model, Vios, at installments from RM540, with RM2,216 sales tax savings. The Yaris hatchback also benefits from RM2,192 sales tax savings, and is available at installments from RM493.

Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid_Badge“We are thankful for the government’s decision to extend the SST exemption incentives for passenger vehicles until 30 June 2022. This has greatly helped automotive players like us to recover from the impact of the pandemic during the last two years. We also encourage Toyota fans to take advantage of the extended tax exemption to purchase their dream car, coupled with the value for money deals UMW Toyota Motor is offering such as the ongoing Stay Ahead sales campaign to enjoy the best savings during this period,” said Ravindran K.

Besides focusing on sales performance, UMW Toyota Motor is also giving back to the community. In January, the company partnered with Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor to extend assistance to Malaysians affected by the flood. Through its ‘Back On Your Feet’ Programme, the company contributed RM10,000 to Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Lui for repairs of its partially damaged premise. UMW Toyota Motor also donated essential home appliances such as rice cookers, kettles and gas stoves to the affected community in Sungai Lui.

“UMW Toyota Motor endeavours to propel society forward by empowering people beyond the road. We are glad to have been given the opportunity to partner with Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor to give back to the community we operate in and help them get back on their feet during these trying times,” added Ravindran.

The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team achieved a historic 1-2 win recently at the Mexico City E-Prix. Pascal Wehrlein started his #94 Porsche 99X Electric from pole at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit and drove it to the chequered flag to clinch the first victory for Porsche in the ABB FIA Formula E world championship. Meanwhile, Pascal’s teammate, André Lotterer, drove a flawless race to make it a top 2 finish.Porsche 99X Electric_Formula E

By securing the season’s first pole position for Porsche, Pascal Wehrlein cemented his intention early in qualifying. After holding an early lead on the 2.606-kilometre circuit, Wehrlein was running in 3rd place by the halfway mark. His teammate, André, who started the race from the 3rd spot, followed behind in 4th place. The gap between the leading pack was tight. However, in the final phase, the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team’s perfect race strategy and optimal energy management yielded dividends. Wehrlein moved up to 2nd place and was able to snatch the lead, with Lotterer directly behind him. Ultimately, the 2 Porsche 99X Electric race cars crossed the finish line almost 10 seconds ahead of their closest pursuers.TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team_99X Electric

Pascal Wehrlein_TAG Heuer Porsche Formula EPascal Wehrlein, Porsche works driver (#94) commented: “I‘ve come close to winning twice in Mexico in the past so I’m delighted that it worked this time. The team had a great plan, although at first I wasn’t entirely sure it would work. After last season, we were under pressure, of course. But we never lost hope, we knew we had a good package and that if everything came together perfectly in one weekend, we would win. That happened today. I hope this victory gives the team new confidence. If we can carry this momentum to the next races, then hopefully things will be a little easier for us from now on.”

Motorsport: Germany, FormelE, Test, formula e,For André Lotterer, Porsche works driver (#36): “This is a great result for the team. Everyone has invested a lot of hard work. Last season with its ups and downs was not easy for us, but now everything has worked out. Both cars ran well from the first practice session. With this one-two result, we showed that we’re serious contenders for the world championship title.”

The success at the 3rd race of the season bumps the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team up to 3rd place in the team rankings. For the drivers, Pascal Wehrlein sits 3rd and is tied for points with André Lotterer in 4th. Porsche made its Formula E debut in 2019. At the debut race in Diriyah, André Lotterer scored a commendable 2nd place, a dream start and proof that Porsche had a competitive vehicle right from the outset. Last season, Pascal Wehrlein had claimed pole position in Mexico City. This was followed by 2 podium results with Wehrlein finishing 3rd in Rome and Lotterer securing 2nd in Valencia.

“With this victory, Porsche’s Formula E project has achieved its first all-time high. We’ve all worked towards this historic moment and we’ve invested an incredible amount of work and effort. After coming very close several times in the past, today we reaped the rewards for this. Congratulations to the whole team – at the racetrack and also in Weissach,“ said Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board, Research and Development, Porsche AG.

Meanwhile, Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport commented: “We’ve waited a long time for this day. The fact that we achieved this phenomenal success at round three of the new season makes it particularly valuable with an eye on the world championship title. Congratulations to Pascal Wehrlein, André Lotterer and the squad on their great triumph. I’m proud of every single team member and of all the employees back at Weissach. Everyone worked hard for this victory and they never lost faith in our project. I’d also like to thank our sponsors and fans for the support they’ve given us since we entered Formula E.”TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team_Mexico City_Podiums

Florian Modlinger_Director Factory Motorsport Formula E_Porsche“It’s a banner day for Porsche. The team was again very focused and in conjunction with the drivers at the racetrack, successfully implemented the excellent prep work done in Weissach. The weekend ran perfectly – from the first free practice with André’s fastest time to Pascal’s pole-setting performance in qualifying through to this commanding one-two achievement in the race. The drivers did a flawless job and delivered the performance that we expect from them. Even when they initially lost positions, the team remained calm. In the closing phase, they were able to utilise the energy advantage they’d gained to work their way up the order again and clinch this one-two result by a big margin. I would also like to sincerely thank Amiel Lindesay, who did all the prep work and built the team from the very start of the Formula E project,” said Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E.

I hope to see this translated into the creations of the three Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge finalists,” commented Anders Warming, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

An esteemed jury of design experts will select 3 designers to participate in the first-ever Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge. The jury members include Anders Warming, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars; Yoon Ahn, Director of Jewellery at Dior Men and Founder of Ambush; Tim Marlow, Chief Executive and Director at the Design Museum, London; and Sumayya Vally, Founder and Principal at Counterspace Studio, Johannesburg.

The Challenge invites emerging designers to experiment and expand the boundaries of materials that are key to Rolls-Royce craftsmanship, bringing together design, materials and craft into a dynamic dialogue. Celebrating tradition and innovation, each biennial Challenge will focus on a different medium and related field of practice – the selected medium for 2022 is textile. The chosen finalists will be announced in March 2022.

In 2021, a long list of emerging creative talents were nominated by an international committee of figures from the design world i.e. Glenn Adamson, US-based curator, writer and former museum director; Anne Marr, Programme Director of Jewellery, Textiles and Materials at Central St Martins, University of Arts London; Nana Ocran, Founding Editor of People’s Stories Project, who works between the UK and Ghana; and Mizuki Takahashi, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile, Hong Kong.

Designers nominated for the Challenge were invited to create a proposal that would surprise, delight, and inspire. Entrants were also asked to consider their culture and heritage, the local and the global environment in which their creation will exist, sustainability and the technological impact of their creation.

The 3 finalists will be invited to the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex, where they will meet the marque’s master craftspeople, before completing their creations. The final works will be unveiled later this year before proceeding on a global tour – including to Rolls-Royce showrooms – where they will be admired by art, design and luxury enthusiasts alike.

Spirit of Ecstasy_Rolls-Royce Motor CarsIn a combined statement, the Spirit of Ecstasy jury said: “The Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge creates a wonderful platform for dialogue and the exchange of inspiration and ideas among creators and visionaries, and offers us ways of deepening and broadening our realm of understanding of textile-based artistic forms and languages of expression. We salute Rolls-Royce for the platform they give to emerging talent and look forward to seeing the works created for the initiative come to life. It will shine a light on craftsmanship, which is something that Rolls-Royce champions and demonstrates to the highest level.”

Rolls-Royce Spectre_EV_SideAlong with the commencement of the Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge, Rolls-Royce has unveiled a redesign of the figurine to grace the bonnet of its new all-electric Spectre. Originally designed by Charles Sykes in 1911, the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine has become an instantly recognisable symbol of British luxury. Her lower, more dynamic stance for Spectre will bring her much closer to Sykes’ original drawings from the early 20th Century. The Spectre is claimed to be the most aerodynamic Rolls-Royce made.
