New Variants Of Locally Assembled BMW X3 And X4 Launched
BMW Malaysia has launched 3 new variants of the BMW X3, and 1 new variant of the BMW X4. The refreshed premium SAV (Sports Activity Vehicles) models are all locally assembled and offer a varied choice of powertrains. The new variants of the BMW X3 are the X3 sDrive20i M Sport, X3 xDrive30i M Sport, and X3 xDrive30e M Sport. This family is complemented by the new BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport variant.
The BMW X3 and BMW X4 have been visually updated with larger kidney grilles linked by a central bridge, a new front apron design with vertical air intakes, and a new bumper. Additionally, the headlights have slimmed down by 10 mm and are full-LED technology units. The slightly ascending bonnet, short front overhang and wedge shape of the silhouette visually give hints to the vehicle’s driving dynamics.
The plug-in hybrid version of the BMW X3 can be identified by the charging port cover behind the left front wheel. While dimensions of the new locally assembled variants remain unchanged, the refresh sees the X3 now sporting a modified range of alloy wheels of up to 20″ in size, as well as full-LED taillights with 3D contouring along the sides, as well as larger tailpipes. For the refreshed BMW X4, the coupe-like roofline is maintained and it gets vertically positioned reflectors as well as a rear bumper with new inserts. Both the X3 and X4 get free-form exhaust tips.
Further, the M Sport Package is available as standard in the new variants of the BMW X3 and X4 and offers noticeably upgraded equipment levels, with a streamlined range of vehicle configurations. This includes the larger air intakes and specific front aprons in both models, along with new colour offerings, rims, and interior trim finishers.
Inside, the BMW X3 and X4 have been updated with a larger 10.25″ Control Display touchscreen, zinc-plated elements in the air vents, and new control elements beneath the display in the centre console. The new models also feature premium leather sport seats with pronounced side bolsters. The BMW Live Cockpit Plus with black panel technology, analogue circular dials and a 5.1″ display in the instrument cluster are fitted in the BMW X3 sDrive20i, while the others get BMW Live Cockpit Professional as standard.
All new variants of the X3 and X4 are powered by the BMW Operating System 7, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and a wide range of optional BMW Connected packages. Software upgrades are done over-the-air to ensure the vehicles are always running the latest software. Further, the features of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant have been significantly expanded. It now allows you to open windows and adjust the air conditioning system using voice commands. Also new is BMW Maps, a cloud-based navigation system which combines increased precision with simplified destination entry points and more comprehensive traffic updates.
Additionally, the BMW X3 xDrive30e has details in BMW i Blue, such as the ring around the BMW logo, to hint at the model’s PHEV capability. The battery in the X3 xDrive30e is capable of powering this SAV in all-electric mode for up to 50 km (WLTP) driving range, and can be charged either by the internal combustion engine (ICE) while on the move or a wall charger.
Meanwhile, the 2 petrol variants of the X3 i.e. sDrive20i and xDrive30i are powered by a 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine capable of a maximum output of 184 hp and 300 Nm of torque, and 252 hp and 350 Nm respectively. The X3 sDrive20i can do 0 – 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 215 km/h, while the X3 xDrive30i officially records 6.3 seconds and 240 km/h respectively. Motion is aided by an 8-speed Steptronic transmission with Automatic Hold Function for the sDrive20i variant while the xDrive30i gets an 8-speed Steptronic Sport unit.
In tune with its Sheer Driving Pleasure promise, the vehicles feature a low centre of gravity, 50/50 axle weight distribution, advanced chassis and xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system. The xDrive variants are all-wheel-drive while the sDrive rotates the rear wheels for different driving preferences. Moreover, the M Sport suspension has specific spring and damper tuning for even more dynamic handling. On the other hand, the X4 xDrive30i is equipped with adaptive suspension.
For additional safety, the driving assistance systems include the Driving Assistant that has Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Front Collision Warning with brake intervention as standard. The new variants are also equipped with Parking Assistant, including the Reversing Assistant. Exclusive to the X3 xDrive30e is the Parking Assistant Plus with Park Assist for end-on and parallel parking spaces including automatic exiting. Further, Active Park Distance Control is available in the PHEV variant, along with the lateral parking aid.
“The BMW X portfolio has long been revered across the globe and especially so in Malaysia for producing some of the most coveted premium Sports Activity Vehicles. Last year, the BMW X portfolio recorded over 3,200 deliveries in Malaysia – contributing to just over 38% of total deliveries from the BMW brand. This success of the BMW X portfolio signals a strong market within the country, in turn affirming our confidence in expanding and revolutionising the automotive industry here with more local assembly facilities and infrastructure,” commented Hans de Visser, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia. “As we move into a year full of electrification possibilities, BMW Group Malaysia is also thrilled to electrify our locally-assembled BMW X3 for the very first time, while offering different powertrain options for those who prefer different driving experiences. This is reflective of our promise to offer the Power of Choice through our extensive range of petrol, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and all-electric vehicles in Malaysia”.
