Volkswagen_Golf R-Line_R_GTILast week, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) launched the all-new Golf family that includes the flagship Golf R. Due to its niche market nature, the Golf R will be sold here as a fully imported unit unlike the locally assembled Golf R-Line and GTI. The Golf R has a selling price of RM356,412.85 and comes with 3 years free maintenance, 5 years unlimited mileage warranty, and 5 years roadside assistance. However, there are only 3 colours to choose from i.e. the signature Lapiz Blue, Deep Black and Pure White.

The lack of exterior colour options is compensated by the high-performance 2.0L TSI turbo engine tuned to put out 320 PS and 400 Nm of torque. The power gets transferred via a 7-speed DSG to a new all-wheel drive system, the 4MOTION with Performance Torque Vectoring.

This intelligent and innovative system enables power to be distributed not only between the front and rear, but also selectively between the rear wheels. This significantly increases the agility of the Golf R, particularly when cornering. It is also fitting that the Golf R is the first Volkswagen to be launched with this system.

Additionally, the Vehicle Dynamics Manager system in the Golf R is closely integrated with other running systems such as the electronic differential lock (XDS), dynamic chassis control (DCC), and progressive steering, to provide optimum traction and remarkable handling.

The Golf R retains an unassuming look with only subtle touches that tell of its sporty inclinations. Things that give it away, other than the R emblems and silver wing mirrors, are the bumper design, enlarged air intake, quad exhaust and newly-designed diffuser in high-gloss black. The 19” Adelaide alloy wheels complete the look of this hot hatch.

The signature blue of the R is also reflected in the blue brake callipers and the blue strip that runs across the front of the vehicle. Another unique feature is the light projection of the R logo when the driver door is opened and closed.

The interior gets the R-specific decorative trim in Carbon Grey, and premium front sport seats with integrated headrest and R logo in Nappa leather. These are furnished with the active climate feature and the driver’s seat can be electrically adjusted and includes lumbar support.

The multi-function sports steering wheel also now has the blue backlit R button that instantly activates ‘Race’ mode with one push. While the longer shift paddles ensure proper  is special as well is the larger shift paddles for more optimum shifting experience.

The advanced 10” Digital Cockpit makes reading various information easy for the driver, and comes with various customisations, including an exclusive R-View. Its auxiliary display highlights data such as output, power, torque distribution, charge pressure, lap timer and G-meter in live view.

Complementing that is a 10” Digital Infotainment System which offers seamless connectivity with inbuilt navigation, and Wireless App-Connect for CarPlay and Android Auto. Audio entertainment comes from the premium Harman Kardon 480W audio system with 10 speakers. Further, there are 30-colour ambient lighting and 3-zone Climatronic air con for optimum comfort.

Volkswagen Golf R_Side_WheelsKey safety features for the Golf-R includes 6 airbags, side assist with rear cross traffic alert, rear view camera, automatic post-collision braking system, Driver alert system, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS), Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), Anti-theft alarm system, proactive passenger protection system, among others.

“The Golf R is the jewel in the Volkswagen crown, and the eighth generation R pushes the limit of what is possible with a Golf. We are delighted to introduce this exceptional model here and we are sure that it will exceed expectations,” said Erik Winter, Managing Director of VPCM.

You can place a booking for the Golf R at any authorised Volkswagen dealerships nationwide or via https://eshowroom.volkswagen.com.my/. Limited units are available.

New to the popular compact Porsche SUV range is the Macan T, which is now open for pre-order in Malaysia. The ‘T’ designation has represented a unique form of dynamic driving at Porsche since the 1960s. It is given to models that offer an especially authentic driving experience courtesy of precise tuning, exclusive equipment and efficient engines. In short, the ‘T’ stands for ‘Touring’ and the Macan T is the first four-door Porsche that will bear this special designation which was previously the reserve of the 911 and 718 models.

True to the spirit of the Porsche 911 T from 1968, the new Porsche Macan T features an incredibly dynamic set-up and a lightweight, 2.0L turbo engine, combined with an athletic design and a range of standard equipment that is ideal for a sporty driving style. This concept positions the Macan T between the Macan and the Macan S.Porsche Macan T_Rear_Tail Lights_Exhaust

The 2.0L turbo engine that comes with the Macan T is light in weight and compact in packaging to offer better balance of weight and performance. Compared to the 2.9L biturbo V6 engine found in the Macan S and GTS, the Macan T’s engine is 58.8 kg lighter. This gives the vehicle an excellent start-off performance and optimum cornering ability; this engine produces 195 kW (265 PS) and 400 Nm of torque.

Coupled with the engine is a fast-switching 7-speed dual clutch transmission (PDK) and the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive system. When fitted with the standard Sport Chrono Package, including the drive mode switch and Sport Response button on the steering wheel, the Macan T accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 232 km/h.Porsche Macan T_Front_Headlights_Grille

Further, the Macan T is the only Porsche model to feature steel suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard. This combination lowers the body by 15 mm. The anti-roll bars on the front axle are also more rigid and the car’s chassis tuning has been optimised to create the perfect suspension for the vehicle and powertrain, resulting in very responsive steering behaviour and agile handling.

The Porsche Traction Management (PTM) has also been adapted to the driving demands of the Macan T and has been specially designed with a rear-wheel bias. Adding adaptive air suspension with PASM and lowering the body by a further 10 mm is also an option, a new feature for Macan models with 4-cylinder engines. There is also the choice of adding Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus); the system has been adapted to the dynamic characteristics of the T model and further sharpens the driving dynamics.

The Macan T stands out from the others in the range by using design elements painted in Agate Grey Metallic on the front, flank and rear. The exclusive contrast colour can be seen on the painted front trim, exterior mirrors, side blades, roof spoiler and logos on the rear. For the exterior colour, you can choose from a range of 13 plain, metallic and special colours. Additionally, sports tailpipes and side window trims in high-gloss Black are included as standard, and the side blades also feature the ‘Macan T’ logo in Black. Standard also are a set of 20″ Macan S wheels, exclusively in dark titanium.

The Macan T gets 8-way electrically adjustable heated sports seats as standard. The seats feature exclusive upholstery based on the Black leather package. The centres of the front seats and the outer rear seats are delivered with the Sport-Tex Stripe pattern and the front headrests each have an embossed Porsche crest. The contrasting colour from the exterior continues inside the vehicle in the form of decorative silver stitching on the seats, headrests and steering wheel.

Standard equipment includes a multi-function GT heated sports steering wheel and Sport Chrono stopwatch in the upper part of the dashboard. Meanwhile, the door entry guards come in black aluminium as standard and feature a Macan T logo. Optional features include the multi-function GT sports steering wheel in Race-Tex with carbon trims and an ioniser.

The Macan T also benefits from all of the new elements of the model generation revised in summer 2021, such as the new centre console with its sophisticated glass-look and touch-sensitive surface, as well as the fully networked Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with a 10.9″ touchscreen, and online navigation as standard.

Unsurprisingly, the Macan is statistically the introduction model to the Porsche experience, with up 80% of buyers being new to Porsche ownership. If you haven’t yet owned a Porsche, now is the time to visit the nearest Porsche Centre for details.

Continental Tyre Malaysia_Managing Director_Andrea SomorovaContinental Tyre Malaysia has a new Managing Director. Andrea Somorova has been appointed to lead Continental in Malaysia as of January 2022. She moves here from Continental Taiwan where she was General Manager. However, this isn’t her first time in Malaysia; she had spent 6 years here with Continental until 2010.

Somorova, from Slovakia, has over 23 years experience with the Continental Group, having started with the company in Slovakia in 1999. She then moved to Continental in Germany before assuming managerial roles in Asia, including in Malaysia, and other APAC markets. The bulk of her time with Continental (18 years) had been spent in Asia.

In Taiwan, Somorova steered Continental to achieve the highest brand awareness among the APAC markets. She also led the team through one of its most challenging periods i.e. the COVID-19 pandemic.

Andrea Somorova attributes her lasting tenure at the Continental Group to it being a dynamic company with a nurturing work culture. “It has been an amazing journey for me in Continental Group and the last 5 years leading the Taiwan business has been nothing short of extraordinary. My experience from Taiwan and beyond will serve me well in Malaysia which presents exciting opportunities for Continental, our team and our customers,” said Somorova.

Continental Tyre Malaysia_Test_MC6“I am very excited to return to Malaysia and build on the work done previously. I look forward to guiding Continental Tyre Malaysia on its growth trajectory working closely with our teams on the ground to deliver innovative tyre solutions to our passenger and commercial vehicle customers. I always welcome new ideas from my team and believe that empowering them through trust, collaboration, and clear communication works best to deliver on our shared goals,” she said.

Andrea Somorova replaces Samir Gupta who now oversees the India Operations, while continuing to head the Central Asia Region Passenger and Light Truck Tires Replacement Business (PLT RE) for Continental.

According to Samir, Andrea Somorova will play an important part in continuing the excellent service Continental has rendered to its customers in Malaysia. “Her vast knowledge in the region and her familiarity with the Malaysian market will complement the amazing team in Malaysia who I’ve had the privilege to work with over the past 2 years.”

Having served for more than 7 years as Deputy Chairman, and with over 30 years in total at Toyota Motor Corporation, Akio Takeyama has made his mark on the automotive brand and the Malaysian automotive industry to which he credits his team and all UMW Toyota Motor stakeholders.

Toyota Yaris_Launch_Akio Takeyama, Janna Nick, Ravindran K_UMW Toyota Motor_Malaysia“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Takeyama-san for all our achievements during his tenure, the result of which is many happy and satisfied Toyota customers. It has truly been an honour to work alongside him, with his passion and automotive brilliance, he has indeed inspired many and leaves behind an incredible legacy. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. I take this opportunity to congratulate Obata-san on the appointment to Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor. I look forward to working with him as we continue pushing the Toyota brand to newer heights and achieving even more milestones.” said Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.

With newly appointed Deputy Chairman Takashi Obata at its helm, UMW Toyota Motor is set to lead the future of mobility through enriching lives and society, while progressing towards mobility for all.

UMW Toyota Motor has launched the Toyota Camry facelift which now features Toyota’s 2.5L Dynamic Force engine. We start with the more visible cosmetic updates. Adopting a ‘Refined and Superior’ design theme, the 2022 Camry 2.5V retains the same general appearance with its low and wide stance for a premium sporty look. The bumper gets a redesign while the lower grille bars remain and extend to the sides, with additional chrome plate ornamentation emphasising the bumper corner volume. The headlights are Bi-LED Projector units with integrated LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) for bright illumination on minimal power consumption. These are automatic and have the Follow-Me-Home function. The wheel size remains at 18″ but with newly designed alloy rims. Meanwhile, the rear gets darkened LED combination lamps.

The bulk of the physical updates is actually on the inside where the layout follows the ‘Luxury and Premium’ concept with new black engineered wood ornamentation and smooth premium black leather upholstery. The driver’s seat has 10-way power adjustment while the front passenger has 8. Steering wheel position adjustment is also power-assisted, and there is a memory function to save steering and seat positions for different drivers.Toyota Camry_Seats_Cross Section

The new car also has improved Human-Machine Integration. The streamlined dashboard is set low, providing a more generous view through the windscreen. It features 3 layers, with a centre console flowing down into the area between the front seats. To improve the driver’s view, the centre 9″ tablet-style infotainment display (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-ready) is positioned above the centre air vents and closer to the driver’s line of sight, increasing visibility and accessibility. Optitron meters are maintained and flank a 7″ TFT multi-information display. The driver can also refer to the Head-up Display (HUD) projected on the windscreen for such information as road speed, gear position, Driving Support System (directions, ACC display, LDA Display, Parking Sensor), audio details and TSS warning alerts. The 2022 Camry also comes with a wireless charger and 3 USB ports (1 in front, 2 at the rear).

For the comfort of the rear passengers, the Camry features power adjustment for the outer rear seats to recline by 8 degrees. There are also larger headrests fitted for enhanced comfort. Adjustments for the seat as well as the rear air-conditioning, sun-shade and audio system can be conveniently done on the control panel within the centre armrest. This convenience is a first in the Camry’s price bracket.

Also new for 2022 is the Tri-zone Automatic Climate Control system which allows the driver, front passenger and rear passengers to independently set their own temperature.

A major update, though not as visible, is the 2.5L Dynamic Force engine, which was developed concurrently with the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform that the Camry uses. The 2.5L all-aluminium Dynamic Force engine is the A25A-FKS 4-cylinder DOHC, 16-valve cylinder head unit with Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) on both the intake and exhaust sides. The intake side uses electric motors to vary the opening and closing of the ports and makes response quicker to alter intake timing according to driving conditions. The new engine produces 209 PS @ 6,600 rpm and 253 Nm of torque @ 5,000 rpm. This represents an increase of 25 PS (+13.6%) and 18 Nm (7.6%) over the previous engine. The engine is mated to a lighter, more compact Direct Shift 8-speed automatic transmission which has high efficiency and lower energy losses, and includes paddle shifters.

Dynamic Force is Toyota’s engine family that adopts high-speed combustion technologies and a variable control system. It also achieves greater thermal efficiency, resulting in high output, due to a reduction in energy loss associated with exhaust and cooling systems, the movement of mechanical parts, and other aspects. As a result, these engines can achieve world-leading thermal efficiencies of 40% and are cleaner burning.

The Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite also now includes:

  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) – all speeds, with stop & go, signal-linked overtaking and Curve Speed Reduction
  • Pre-Collision System (PCS) with pedestrian and cyclist detection
  • Lane Departure Alert (LDA) + Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) & Steering Assist
  • Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)
  • Auto High Beam (AHB)

Other assistance features include a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) & Rear Cross Traffic Auto Brake (RCTAB) and Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS).

“UMW Toyota Motor is proud to share this milestone with you as we bring the New Toyota Camry to Malaysian shores. We have come a long way since the introduction of the first Camry in Malaysia back in 1994, which was the 3rd generation model, followed by the first locally assembled Camry Hybrid in 2015. The 8th generation Camry was launched in Malaysia in November 2018 and has since sold over 3,000 units. With its striking presence and optimised functionality, we are confident that the 2022 Camry will provide a new standard of comfort, luxury and performance asthey drive forward into the future,” said Ravindran. K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.

Toyota Camry_2022The 2022 Toyota Camry is available in 5 colours i.e. Graphite Metallic, Silver Metallic, Red Mica and the signature colours, Platinum White Pearl and Burning Black (additional RM800). Retail price has been confirmed to start from RM199,109.50 (with 50% Sales & Service Tax exemption and without insurance).

All new Toyota vehicles enjoy a comprehensive 5-year warranty with unlimited mileage.
