Flagship Volkswagen Golf R Priced At RM356k

Last week, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) launched the all-new Golf family that includes the flagship Golf R. Due to its niche market nature, the Golf R will be sold here as a fully imported unit unlike the locally assembled Golf R-Line and GTI. The Golf R has a selling price of RM356,412.85 and comes with 3 years free maintenance, 5 years unlimited mileage warranty, and 5 years roadside assistance. However, there are only 3 colours to choose from i.e. the signature Lapiz Blue, Deep Black and Pure White.

The lack of exterior colour options is compensated by the high-performance 2.0L TSI turbo engine tuned to put out 320 PS and 400 Nm of torque. The power gets transferred via a 7-speed DSG to a new all-wheel drive system, the 4MOTION with Performance Torque Vectoring.

This intelligent and innovative system enables power to be distributed not only between the front and rear, but also selectively between the rear wheels. This significantly increases the agility of the Golf R, particularly when cornering. It is also fitting that the Golf R is the first Volkswagen to be launched with this system.

Additionally, the Vehicle Dynamics Manager system in the Golf R is closely integrated with other running systems such as the electronic differential lock (XDS), dynamic chassis control (DCC), and progressive steering, to provide optimum traction and remarkable handling.

The Golf R retains an unassuming look with only subtle touches that tell of its sporty inclinations. Things that give it away, other than the R emblems and silver wing mirrors, are the bumper design, enlarged air intake, quad exhaust and newly-designed diffuser in high-gloss black. The 19” Adelaide alloy wheels complete the look of this hot hatch.

The signature blue of the R is also reflected in the blue brake callipers and the blue strip that runs across the front of the vehicle. Another unique feature is the light projection of the R logo when the driver door is opened and closed.

The interior gets the R-specific decorative trim in Carbon Grey, and premium front sport seats with integrated headrest and R logo in Nappa leather. These are furnished with the active climate feature and the driver’s seat can be electrically adjusted and includes lumbar support.

The multi-function sports steering wheel also now has the blue backlit R button that instantly activates ‘Race’ mode with one push. While the longer shift paddles ensure proper  is special as well is the larger shift paddles for more optimum shifting experience.

The advanced 10” Digital Cockpit makes reading various information easy for the driver, and comes with various customisations, including an exclusive R-View. Its auxiliary display highlights data such as output, power, torque distribution, charge pressure, lap timer and G-meter in live view.

Complementing that is a 10” Digital Infotainment System which offers seamless connectivity with inbuilt navigation, and Wireless App-Connect for CarPlay and Android Auto. Audio entertainment comes from the premium Harman Kardon 480W audio system with 10 speakers. Further, there are 30-colour ambient lighting and 3-zone Climatronic air con for optimum comfort.

Key safety features for the Golf-R includes 6 airbags, side assist with rear cross traffic alert, rear view camera, automatic post-collision braking system, Driver alert system, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS), Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), Anti-theft alarm system, proactive passenger protection system, among others.
