Kuala Terengganu, 4 August, 2018 – The Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival in Kuala Terengganu kicked off without a hitch yesterday, and the first round of the Vios Challenge races got off smoothly too, but produced some surprises, making it even more interesting for the coming race today and onwards into the next rounds.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival, Vios Challenge Promotional Class 2018, MalaysiaIn the Promotional Class, the lady celebrities proved that they could be as good as the men, if not better, when two female racers took the podium. Diana Danielle pulled off a shocker when she clocked the fastest time in qualifying to take pole position. From pole, Diana led from start to finish in the 20 lap race to score top points. Diana drove steadily and steered clear of the barriers, gradually building up her lead over Akim Ahmad. Diana finished 2.412 seconds ahead of Akin, while Janna Nick romped home in third position. Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota finished a credible fourth. Wan Hasrita, another lady newcomer to the series, finished 5th, bringing the total number of lady finishers to three in the top five finishers.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival, Vios Challenge, Sporting Class, Kuala Terengganu 2018In the Sporting class, Shawn Lee and Shukri Yahya, both who joined as newcomers in the last season were promoted to the Sporting Class by virtue of the duo winning the top two positions in the Promotional Class. Shawn and Shukri pulled off another surprise by taking pole and second grid in the qualifying.

In the race itself, Shawn convincingly led from pole position to finish 8.348 seconds ahead of Brendon Lim. Kenneth Koh finished in third. Shukri Yahya had a small argument with a concrete barrier, just four corners into the start on Lap One and retired.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Challenge, Kuala Terengganu 2018, Super Sporting ClassIn the Super Sporting Class, Kenny Lee claimed pole position in qualifying, but it was William Ho who was first into Turn 1 in the race. Relegated to second place, Kenny Lee lost a place to Boy Wong a couple of laps later and that was how the race ended. Fourth place went to Keifli Othman with Mark Darwin finishing fifth.

Race 2 today will be very interesting as there will be a “reverse grid” put into play for each of the categories, wherein the winner of the previous round has to exchange positions with the eighth position winner, the second with the seventh, and so on.

Subang Jaya, 2 August 2018 – Proton is enjoying some positivity as it prepares to launch its first SUV in a few months’ time, as it sees monthly sales hit its highest volume in 30 months. In July 2018, Proton sold 8,102 vehicles, which also represents a 31% increase over the previous month. We foresee sales will taper once the new Sales and Service Tax takes effect on 1 September, as the current sales is mainly driven by buyers taking advantage of the current zero rated GST as well as Proton’s ongoing sales promotions, like the ‘Best Saga Deal in 10 Years’ offer.

Proton resumed exports to the Middle East recently. From right: Abdul Rashid Musa, CEO of Proton Edar, Datuk Radzaif Mohamed, Deputy CEO of Proton and Dr Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton.

The company’s July sales was also helped by the resumption of exports for the first time since Geely came on board. A total of 517 cars were shipped out last month. Proton’s most popular export market is currently the Middle East, particularly in countries like Jordan, Iraq and Iran. Sales in Egypt is said to resume later this year as the country recovers from the currency crisis that has affected the country. With that, Proton also expects to export more cars before the year ends.

Domestically, Proton estimates its share of the market at approximately 11.7% of Total Industry Volume, with Saga and Persona continuing to be its most popular models. Last month, the Saga broke the 3,000 unit barrier for the first time in 2018 and the Persona also broke the 2,000 unit barrier since May 2017, with 2,221 units sold.

Proton 1 Tank Adventure, Persona 1.6 CVT, Bukit Melawati Lighthouse, MalaysiaThe ‘Best Saga Deal in 10 Years’ promotion where a Saga can be bought for less than RM30,000 helped this model break the 3,000 unit barrier for the first time in 2018. As for the Persona, its ASEAN NCAP 5 star rating, extensive safety features that include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control (TC) and 6 airbags as well as its spacious interior, 510 litre boot also helped attract 2,221 buyers last month, allowing the Persona to break the 2,000 unit barrier for the first time since May 2017. Incidentally, Zachary also drove the Persona in the Proton 1-Tank Adventure and achieved an admirable fuel economy of 20.2 km/l. You can read about it here.

“July was a very good month for PROTON as we had achieved our highest volume not just for 2018 but also for the last 30 months. We know that a big factor in boosting sales is the current tax holiday period with zero-rated GST prior to the implementation of SST in September but the numbers also prove that Malaysians are opening their eyes to the attractive buying proposition offered by the current range of Proton cars. We are therefore hopeful of carrying over this momentum even after SST has been introduced as we gear up for the launch of our first SUV later in the year,” said Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer of PROTON Edar.

August is Merdeka month and also the last month for GST (Goods & Services Tax) before the switch to SST (Sales & Service Tax). To take advantage of the currently zero rated GST, Go Auto Sales Sdn Bhd, the exclusive distributor of Haval vehicles in Malaysia will run the Freedom From GST promotion.

This promotion applies to all Haval SUVs and will be held from now until 31 August 2018. There will be savings worth up to RM6,600 which covers zero-rated GST and rebates ranging from RM500 to RM1,500.

Besides this promotion, Go Auto will be organising a Haval mall roadshow at The Curve Shopping Mall, Petaling Jaya from 9 – 12 August as part of the ongoing Reimagine Campaign.

“Being the final month for our customers to enjoy the zero-rated GST before the introduction of Sales & Service Tax (SST), Go Auto takes the opportunity to add-on from the existing tax holiday with the current promotion. This month, as part of the Independence Day – where Malaysians celebrates kemerdekaan, our promotional theme seems to be apt as we celebrate Malaysia’s special day. Aside from that, the Company definitely hopes to continue giving Malaysians the opportunity to own SUVs at competitive prices,” said Executive Director of Go Auto Group, Dato’ SM Azli SM Nasimuddin Kamal.

“We will be having our following Haval mall roadshow at The Curve next week and I invite everyone to see our SUVs and enjoy our current offerings in addition to the fun-filled activities we have prepared. I am confident our range of SUVs can certainly meet customers’ needs,” Dato’ Azli added.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has introduced two saloon models from its flagship S-Class family, because when you are well-off, you should be spoiled for choice. The saloon choices from Mercedes-Benz’s flagship family are the Mercedes-Benz S 450 L and the Mercedes-Maybach S 560 & S 650.

Mercedes-Benz S 450 L

The S 450 L is a long wheelbase version of the flagship sedan. It replaces the current S 400 h hybrid version available locally, and gets power (367 hp, 500 Nm) from a 3.0L V6 turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox. The official combined average fuel consumption is 8.4l/100km while 0 – 100 km/h is officially timed at 5.4 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz S 450 L Launch, Malaysia 2018Updates to the exterior of this facelifted S-Class include a new front grille with three twin vertical louvres in chrome, new front bumper with pronounced air intakes, redesigned lower rear bumper with integrated tailpipe trim, new crystal-look LED tail lamps, and new Multibeam LED headlamps with new daytime running light configuration.

Inside, the dashboard houses two new high-resolution 12.3″ diplays under one cover for a near seamless look. New also is the flat-bottomed Nappa leather steering wheel with Touch Control buttons that allow you to use swiping motions to access features in the infotainment system. The infotainment system can also be accessed with the touchpad with controller in the centre console or via the Linguatronic voice control. Voice control now includes the control of vehicle functions such as air conditioning, seat ventilation, seat massage, cabin lighting, and head-up display.

Other features include Active Distance Distronic and Active Steering Assist, which adjusts the vehicle speed before a bend or junction, Airmatic air suspension, 20″ AMG 10-spoke rims, Burmester surround sound system, panoramic sunroof, Thermotronic climate control, Air Balance fragrance and ioniser package, active parking assist, active rear seat belt buckle, rear beltbag and rear side airbags.

The Mercedes-Benz S 450 L has a retail price of RM699,888, with an option to choose it with the designo paint option for RM705,888 (on-the-road without insurance and before sales tax).

The S 450 L is also available at RM8,888* a month with a 3-year EaseCare Financing that includes Service Package, first year comprehensive motor insurance and Agility Financing which provides a guaranteed future value and flexible financing options.

* Based on 22.39% downpayment, 36-month tenure, 20,000 km per annum mileage, 0% NCD, LLnp, LLoP and windscreen coverage, private registration in Pen. Malaysia. Terms and conditions apply.

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class

If the S-Class is termed by Mercedes-Benz as the ‘pinnacle of luxury’, then the Mercedes-Maybach is the cherry on top. This pinnacle at the pinnacle of Mercedes luxury comes with a wheelbase that is 200 mm Mercedes-Maybach S 560, Malaysia Launch 2018longer (3,365 mm) than the long wheelbase S-Class saloon, offering even more room in the rear for the luxurious Executive seats which feature 12 motors for more customised seat positions. The front passenger seat can be adjusted up to 77 mm forward, for more room at the rear to extend the footrest. This ‘Chauffeur’ package also includes the Easy Adjust luxury head restraints which allows the front passenger head restraint to fold down or be removed.

Adding to the comfort level provided by the interior (as well as to the attentiveness of the driver) is the Energizing comfort control suite which essentially is mood control, that could include massage and aromatherapy. To elaborate, the ‘Energizing’ suite controls climate control, fragrancing/ionisation (Air Balance feature), lighting mood, music/videos, massage, and seat heating and ventilation.

This suite works on the premise of having one dominant function while the other functions reinforce the desired effects of the selected programme. As an example, the Refresh programme delivers fresh air via the Thermotronic air pulsation function to help refresh on a long journey. This programme also utilises the Air Balance feature to simulate after-rain scent for a fresh feel. Additionally, the cabin’s ambience lighting changes to blue-green colours to suit the mood.

Likewise, the Vitality programme uses music as its dominant theme, with Comand Online activating the relevant music playlists with lively rhythms. The music is channeled through the Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system that boasts 27 speakers, 400W subwoofer and high-resolution tweeters, all with their own drive/amplifier electronics. And red is the theme for the ambience lighting.

The interior ambience can also be altered with Magic Sky Control which uses electrical charge to manipulate the particles in the 2-section panoramic sunroof glass to either let in light or darken to block it. Mercedes-Benz claims this is more effective than tinted glass and can reduce interior temperature by up to 10°C. When the vehicle is parked and the key is removed from the car, the glass will darken to prevent the interior from heating up.

The interior comes with two new exclusive colour combinations i.e. armagnac brown/black and savanna beige/black. The black Mayback Exclusive nappa leather upholstery can also be had with copper-, gold- or platinum-coloured contrasting topstitching. Also available are trim inserts in designo flowing lines Magnolia wood.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is also a facelift and features a new front grille inspired by pinstriped suits, a Maybach logotype between the front louvres, and a new 20″ multi-spoke wheel design. There is choice of three other Maybach-exclusive 20″ wheel designs as well as the option for a two-tone exterior paint finish; up to nine colour combinations are available upon request. The double clear coat is also available as a new option for all dark colours to give a piano lacquer effect and an impression of depth. This will be applied by hand by trained varnishers at Maybach Manufaktur.

Powering the Mercedes-Maybach S 560 is a 4.0L V8 bi-turbo with 469 hp and 700 Nm of torque, while the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 uses a 6.0L V12 with 630 hp and 1,000 Nm. 0 – 100 km/h acceleration times are 4.9 seconds and 4.7 seconds respectively.

Assisting the motion of the Mercedes-Maybach are Magic Body Control which combines active suspension with continuously adjustable dampers as well as Road Surface Scan. Road Surface Scan uses a stereo camera to scan the road ahead to predict oscillations and then optimise the damping adjustment of each wheel according to the road surface. Further, the curve inclination function enables the body of the vehicle to lean inwards by up to 2.65° on bends to significantly reduce the perceived lateral forces while increasing subjective driving pleasure on winding roads.

In addition, Night View Assist Plus highlights to the driver when it detects pedestrians and larger animals in the dark and recognises it as a potentially hazardous situation. This system illuminates the road within the distance of the high-beam headlamp, with two anti-dazzle infrared lamps, and displays the image in the cockpit display. A thermal imaging camera supports this by distinguishing objects such as traffic signs or shrubbery from pedestrians or large animals. Upon detection, the pedestrian or animal will be flashed several times by the spotlight function to raise awareness of the situation for both the driver and pedestrian/animal.

Other features include ten airbags (including in the rear seat belts), mini chiller, stowable rear trays, and the Mayback badge in various locations. The Mercedes-Maybach starts from RM1.4 million (on-the-road without insurance or sales tax).

Close racing is the order of the day.

This weekend (2 – 4 August 2018) is going to be rather exciting for Terengganu folks, because for the first time, a car race is going to take place right in the centre of Kuala Terengganu City, at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium. The Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival’s first race for the 2018 Vios Challenge will kick off on a street circuit that has been carved out of the car park and road complex around the stadium.

In addition to the Vios Challenge, which is expected to take place over two days, there will be other carnival-type activities organized by UMW Toyota Malaysia, so there is plenty of fun for all members of the family.

Akio Takeyama in Car No. 1 YSK_1747The Vios Challenge will be run over four events, starting with this weekend’s event in Kuala Terengganu, and will see drivers pitting their skills against one another to find a champion for each round. Points are also scored in each round, with the winner scoring the most number of points and lower points for the rest, up to 10th position. These points will go towards the season’s total to find the overall winner at the end of the four-race series.

To make it an even playing field, there are three categories of races – the Promotional Class, the Sporting Class and the Super Sporting Class. The Promotional Class is a category created for celebrities, to add colour to the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival. Some well-known Malaysian celebrities are expected to be there for this weekend’s races, and they include Wani Hasrita, Janna Nick, Khai Bahar, Nabila Razali, Akim Ahmad, Nabil Ahmad, and Aiman Tino. Also in the group is none other than UMW Toyota Motor’s Deputy Chairman, Akio Takeyama, who is also a racing enthusiast. Last year’s Promotional Class Winner Shawn Lee and runner-up  Shukri Yahya will still be racing in the Vios Challenge, but they are ‘upgraded’ to the Sporting Class.

Close racing is the order of the day.
Close racing is the order of the day.

The Sporting Class is for experienced race drivers who have raced, but have never won a race – this category is keenly contested, and many thrills and spills are expected. Fourteen competitors will be contesting for honours in this first round. The favourites for this category are Brendon Lim, Patrick Tam, Kenneth Koh  and  Wong Chin Eng. Shawn Lee and Shukri Yahya are expected to give them a run for the money. Other drivers in this category include Adzeen Eqwan, Eric Yong, Hayden Haikal, Ken Foo, Lim Sai for, Oscar Kok Tung, Vincent Ng, and Akina Teo, who had a poor season last year, and is looking forward to a podium this time.

The hottest race is always the Super Sporting Class – this race is for experienced racing drivers who have won races before – we will not see Tengku Djan this time around. However, Djan will be contesting in the next few rounds.  Nevertheless, we will still see plenty of action from the likes of Mark Darwin, veteran racer Keifli Othman, and Brendon Paul. This round will see twelve contenders, the others being Boy Wong, Dato Farouk, Eddie Liew,  Ho William, Kenny Lee, Rocky Siow, Ser Meng Hui and Syafiq Ali.  We also have an interesting newcomer to the series, Freddie Ang, 24, who has Formula BMW and go-karting experience. Freddie comes from a family of motorsports enthusiasts, and is the younger brother of Dominic Ang, currently competing in the China GT races.

Kuala Lumpur, 1 August 2018 – Shell Malaysia has launched the Shell Rimula R6 LM fully synthetic and Rimula R5 LE synthetic technology heavy-duty diesel engine oils (HDDEO) with new formulation that meets the latest American Petroleum Institute (API) CK-4 engine oil specification.

Shell had played a leading role in the development of the new API CK-4 standard for heavy-duty diesel engine oils. The company’s Global OEM Technical Manager, Dan Arcy, chaired the New Category Development Team – a committee of manufacturers, oil marketers, and additive companies responsible for defining and developing the new specifications and associated tests. Shell was the first to introduce the new range in North America and now, in Malaysia. The availability of this new HDDEO that meets the latest API CK-4 specification is good news for the highly competitive fleet and transportation sectors where companies are under pressure to achieve high standards of reliability and safety while keeping operating costs at a minimum.

The new API CK-4-compliant Rimula oils will replace the CJ-4 oils in Malaysia. Fortunately, the new oils are backwards compatible so it is suitable for use in the trucks and buses equipped with older engines. For the operators who operate both newer and older vehicles, this helps to simplify lubrication procedures and purchases.

The new API CK-4 Shell Rimula R6 LM flagship oil combines a fully synthetic base oil with PurePlus technology and Adaptive Additive Technology.

Both the Shell Rimula R6 LM and R5 LE have demonstrated excellent oxidation and sludge deposit control to prevent oil thickening and harmful deposits in all areas of the engine, resulting in cleaner pistons. They also offer superior viscosity and shear stability for better engine wear protection even at high temperatures and pressure. All these lead to extended oil drain intervals, better fuel economy and lower maintenance costs.

“Diesel engine technology has advanced significantly over the past 40 years, driven by tightening emissions legislation and increased emphasis from customers on efficiency, reliability and reduced total cost of ownership,” said May Tan, Marketing General Manager – Malaysia/Singapore, Shell Lubricants.

“Today’s engines operate at higher temperatures and need a new generation of high-performing diesel engine oils to protect them. New API CK-4 Shell Rimula engine oils are designed to help deliver efficient engine operation and excellent wear protection,” she added.

Shell has conducted more than 64 million km (40 million miles) of real-world testing (customer and testing field trials since 2012) – akin to driving over 1,500 times around the world. Such rigorous testing demonstrates the performance of the next-generation heavy-duty diesel engine oils that meet the CK-4 specification without compromising oil life or wear protection.
