All one has to do is tap their contactless debit or Mastercard credit cards, or mobile wallets linked to Mastercard cards, at the payment terminals to pay for the train ride without needing to queue at the counter.

This Tap & Go option takes out the use of paper-based tickets, in line with Mastercard’s commitment to support Malaysia’s adoption of cashless payment methods. Mastercard’s payments technology and insights also allow commuters to enjoy a more frictionless, seamless payment option that enhances their overall traveling experience, making commuting easier, faster and more convenient.

According to Mastercard data, contactless transactions in Malaysia grew at an impressive 135% year-on-year rate, with by over 250,000 contactless terminals across the country at various retail touchpoints such as quick service restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets, pharmacies and fuel stations.

Petronas has revealed the ROVR, the first mobile refuelling service offered by the brand in Malaysia. The ROVR has been in service, serving B2B (commercial customers) since its pilot in October 2018, delivering over 1 million litres of fuel. With the introduction of more ROVR trucks, Petronas will be able to expand to more commercial customers nationwide; this service will soon extend to the B2C segment of users.

Petronas Dagangan Berhad_ROVR Mobile Refuelling Service_B2B 11000-liter Capacity Truck_MalaysiaThe ROVR’s innovative concept is to allow for a seamless and safe refuelling experience for both commercial and everyday drivers, beyond conventional petrol stations. End-consumers will soon be able to experience this innovative solution as ROVR will be delivering the latest Petronas Primax95 with Pro-Drive at high-traffic hotspots, widening PDB’s coverage area beyond the extensive network of Petronas stations nationwide.

“At PDB (Petronas Dagangan Bhd), we invest heavily in understanding the customer journey and we address the frictions in their daily lives by offering progressive solutions. ROVR provides a new refuelling experience, and we are excited to have our customers be the first in Malaysia to experience this. We have received positive feedback from our B2B customers and we are ready to cater to more. We want our customers to move like never before as we continue to deliver a seamless and frictionless customer experience,” said Dato’ Sri Syed Zainal Abidin, MD/CEO of PDB.

ROVR provides scheduled deliveries of Petronas Dynamic Diesel to B2B customers, enabling a hassle-free experience in the logistical management of a fleet. This also allows for the refuelling process to take place at the customers’ convenience on their premises.

Petronas ROVR B2B Mobile Refuelling Service_4000-liter refueling_Landbridge Haulage (M) Sdn Bhd“I am pleased with this new offering from PDB. It’s not easy for our large trucks to navigate on roads, and some stations set a limitation on large commercial vehicles. With ROVR, we just schedule for fuel deliveries, and ROVR trucks and Rangers will show up for our drivers to refuel without the need to leave the yard or take a detour. This definitely eases logistical planning, reduces costs and improves our time management,” said Mr. Sua Hee Yuan, Chief Financial Officer of Landbridge Haulage (M) Sdn Bhd.

ROVR fuel trucks are guaranteed safe and certified for fuel delivery and dispensing, according to the stringent health, safety, security, and environmental (HSSE) requirements of national authorities and regulatory bodies. All ROVR trucks are equipped with sensors to monitor vital information and maintain operational safety throughout the duration of service at all times.

Petronas Dagangan Berhad_ROVR B2C_3000-liter Capacity Truck_Mobile Refuelling Service_MalaysiaThe ROVR fleet currently includes one 4,000-liter capacity, and three 11,000-liter capacity trucks for commercial customers. There is a 3,000-liter capacity ROVR truck currently in the pilot stage for end-consumers. PDB aims to expand the ROVR service nationwide by the end of 2019, with the establishment of more refuelling sites.

Isuzu Malaysia has introduced several variants of its Elf and Forward trucks in an effort to expand its range of trucks and increase the brand’s appeal to more customers. The new variants are expected to go on sale from the third quarter of 2019 and the company expects this to help retain the brand’s leading position. The Isuzu Elf range has been the top-selling light-duty truck in Malaysia for the past nine years.

The Elf range is known to be one of the most versatile in the market, with 11 variants of various tonnage and drivetrains available to suit various needs. It is also globally acknowledged by truck operators for its highly dependable performance and low running costs. The new Elf variants will make it a total of 19 on offer by Isuzu Malaysia, covering 4-wheeler, 6-wheeler, 4×4 and Crew-Cab versions, making it the widest range of light-duty trucks available in the market.

Isuzu Malaysia_Koji Nakamura_CEO“With the wider selection of variants available, truck operators will be able to select the most appropriate Isuzu vehicle for their operations rather than to buy a truck that is not perfectly configured to their transportation needs,” said Koji Nakamura, CEO of Isuzu Malaysia.

One of the key features is the availability of the “Smoother” – a 6-speed automated manual transmission (AMT), particularly targetted at businesses that operate vehicles in frequent stop-start and congested urban environments. With the growth of e-commerce increasing the demand for light-duty trucks, the new Isuzu Elf variants are able to offer the perfect solution to the rising demand for dependable and efficient deliveries. Further, the engines for “Smoother” models comply with the Euro 3 emission standards, ensuring the Elf remains efficient and environmentally friendly.

The Smoother AMT gearbox offers the benefits of an automatic but with the reliability and lower running costs of manual transmission. Although the initial purchase cost of a Smoother-fitted truck may be higher, the benefits are seen over the longer term. For one, fluid coupling does not cause as much wear and tear. The gears are also directly coupled and as such do not suffer energy loss via hydraulic slippage, thus offering a significant advantage in terms of driving cost. Further, it gives the option to hire from a larger pool of truck drivers who do not necessarily need to be good at operating manual transmission.

AMT benefits the drivers as well since it can reduce the chance of fatigue over the course of the day thus enabling them to be more focused on the driving. This will reduce the risk of accidents as well as improve the economy and life expectancy of the engine and drivetrain. The “Smoother” models also have a secondary ECONO Mode that the driver can select to automatically change gears at lower engine revolutions, enabling even greater fuel savings.

Isuzu Malaysia will also introduce three new crew cab variants to its 2019 line-up. With a total of four models in this segment, customers in the service industry will have more choices to transport their manpower and goods efficiently and safely.

Unlike some retrofitted after-market crew cabs that may have questionable quality or safety issues, Isuzu’s crew cabs are designed at Isuzu’s R&D centre employing the latest technologies, built and outfitted completely in the Isuzu factory thus ensuring full compliance to the highest ECE safety standards. Buyers will also enjoy the full Isuzu warranty.

Meanwhile, the Isuzu Forward range will get a tougher chassis and higher performance. The Forward is said to be a favourite among long-haulers for its exemplary low-running cost, impressive maneuverability and highly-accommodating cabin.

The 2019 FVR34 model will come with a GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) of 19 tons, up from the current 18-ton capacity. This upgraded payload capacity not only allows owners to maximize each trip and reducing transportation costs, the maneuverability of the Forward range also makes it ideal for intra-city hauling, eliminating the need to break bulk for urban pick-up and deliveries. The front axle capacity too has been significantly increased to 7,500 kg thus contributing to its superior carrying capacity.

To complement to the increased payload, the nimble and flexible 6HK1-TC powerplant has been tuned to develop a very respectable 300 PS of power with 986 Nm of torque for the FVR300 model. This gives it superior performance over all Malaysian road conditions, particularly hilly terrain.

The improved FVR300 model range will also be paired with a new Eaton transmission. Using nine forward speeds including a ‘crawler’ gear for extreme terrain, the new transmission’s ratios better match the engine’s improved performance characteristics to give the FVR more flexible performance while engine revolutions remain more frequently in its optimal zone.

Additionally, Isuzu Malaysia is retaining the popular FVR240 model in the line-up for customers who require the large cargo capacity but less weighty bulk such as food or furniture, or to perform duties as council vehicles.

Furthermore, the FVR34 range now comes standard with full air brakes and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) for a higher level of safety and to meet ECE standards. Braking performance is now significantly improved with the ABS assisting in maintaining braking stability particularly on slippery surfaces.

The Isuzu Forward models can also be upgraded with a larger capacity alternator to meet the power demands of high-amperage equipment.

The new 2019 range of Isuzu trucks will be available at all 43 authorised Isuzu truck outlets nationwide from the third quarter of 2019.

Mercedes-Benz EQ Range_Bandar Malaysia_Kuala LumpurApart from the launch of the Mercedes-Benz S560e plug-in hybrid limousine, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia also showcased two other models from its EQ brand of intelligent electric mobility i.e. the all-electric EQC SUV and the C300e plug-in hybrid sedan.

“As a long-term and committed investor in the country, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia sees much potential in the country’s automotive sector and we are ready for an electrified future. The future of mobility will offer more flexibility and countless new possibilities that will make our lives easier,” said Dr Claus Weidner, President & CEO, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4MATIC_MalaysiaMercedes-Benz, the inventor of the automobile, is using the EQ brand to reshape the future of mobility. The EQC, in 400 4MATIC guise, makes its first Southeast Asia stop in Kuala Lumpur with hopes to accelerate an electric agenda. The EQC brings design, functionality and service together in a unique way. It offers day-to-day suitable e-mobility in a very special package: the EQC is an electric car, and at the same time 100% a Mercedes.

“The SEA premiere of the Mercedes-Benz EQC, as previewed today, presents the next generation car, reshaping the future of mobility with a combination of progressive design, state-of-the-art safety assistance, connectivity, digitalization as well as its signature features. You could say – Electric now has a Mercedes,” says Mark Raine, Vice President, Sales & Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

Mercedes-Benz EQC_Electric Motor_MalaysiaWith its seamless, clear design and colour highlights typical of the brand, the EQC is the front-runner for an avantgarde electric look while embodying progressive luxury with its design idiom. With respect to quality, safety and comfort, the EQC is the Mercedes-Benz among electric vehicles and immediately impresses with the sum of its attributes. These are accompanied by dynamic performance, thanks to two electric motors at the front and rear axles with a combined output of 300 kW (408 hp & 760 Nm). It accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz EQC_Charging Port_MalaysiaWith a sophisticated operating strategy, the EQC has a potential electric driving range of about 450 km according to NEDC (provisional figure). The EQC’s 80 kWh lithium-ion battery consists of 384 cells arranged in the vehicle floor between the axles. The battery system is liquid-cooled and modular in design, consisting of two modules with 48 cells each and four with 72 cells each. The powerful high-voltage battery has a maximum voltage of 405 V and a nominal capacity of 230 Ah. The battery is an integral part of the crash concept for the vehicle as a whole and its low, central location also has a positive effect on the handling characteristics of the EQC.

The EQC can be charged via a domestic power socket but due to the battery’s capacity, it takes about 11 hours to fully charge it from empty. On the other hand, the Mercedes-Benz Wallbox Home charger can take battery charge level from 10% to 80% in about 40 minutes. In cooperation with a country-specific charger installation partner, Mercedes-Benz also offers easy and rapid installation of the Mercedes-Benz Wallbox and professional advice on all aspects of e-mobility.

EQ also offers comprehensive services with Mercedes me, and makes electro-mobility convenient and suitable for day-to-day motoring.

Besides that, Mercedes-Benz has kept things familiar such as the MBUX infotainment system, ambient lighting, drive modes, ambient lighting, Burmester surround sound system, etc. Mercedes-Benz hopes to make the EQC available to Malaysian motorists in the latter half of 2020.

Mercedes-Benz C300e_EQ Power_Plug-in Hybrid_MalaysiaIn the case of the C300e plug-in hybrid, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is also looking to introduce this model as a replacement for the C350e. Despite the lower ranking model name, the C300e packs more power. The 2.0L 4-cylinder engine produces 211 hp with torque peaking at 350 Nm. This is paired with a 90 kW (122 hp) electric motor for a combined output of 235 kW (320 hp) and 700 Nm. Also fitted with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission like the S560e, 0 – 100 km/h acceleration is 5.4 seconds.

Like the S560e limousine, the C300e’s 13.5 kWh lithium-ion battery is capable of a 50 km electric range potential. It will take 1.8 hours to charge it via the Mercedes-Benz Wallbox Home charger while a domestic outlet stretches that to 6 hours.

Mercedes-Benz C300e_Plug-in Hybrid_MalaysiaThe C300e comes with the AMG Line exterior, featuring 19″ AMG five-twin-spoke alloy wheels. Headlamps are MULTIBEAM LED with 84 independently-operated and highly-accurate LEDs that can automatically and intelligently adjust to suit lighting conditions or congestion levels around the vehicle such as when at a roundabout, in urban and congested areas, or in severe weather conditions that may affect driver’s vision. In addition, the C300e is also equipped with the electronically-operated panoramic sliding sunroof.

For seats and upholstery, the C300e is fitted with leather upholstery with a pre-installed memory seat package and open-pore black ash wood trim. It also maximises drivers’ convenience with a 12.3″ instrument cluster display and 10.25″ central display.

The C 300 e offers a familiar range of equipment such as the DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL, PRE-SAFE® system, Active Brake Assist as well as the KEYLESS-GO package.

This range of Mercedes-Benz EQ vehicles can be seen and tested (along with other models from the Mercedes-Benz range) this weekend (14 – 16 June 2019; 10 am – 5 pm) at Bandar Malaysia, Jalan Lapangan Terbang Lama, Kuala Lumpur (the old TUDM airbase in Sungai Besi).

BMW Group Malaysia, Shell Malaysia, Sunway Group and ParkEasy have formed a partnership to bring convenience to motorists in the form of the new Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays. These Reserve + Recharge Bays are essentially parking bays equipped with BMW’s iWallbox chargers for plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and electric vehicles which you can reserve beforehand.

Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays_Sunway Pyramid_CP2_BMW Group_Sunway Group_Shell Malaysia_ParkEasyThe launch of these Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays is a part of BMW Group Malaysia’s ongoing drive for e-mobility in Malaysia. The convenience and availability of these charging facilities are vital in fostering the shift among Malaysians towards Visionary Mobility. The 10 charging bays are available across three major Sunway Group properties i.e. five bays in Sunway Pyramid (CP2 level), three in Sunway Pinnacle, and two in Sunway Velocity.

BMW Group Malaysia_Managing Director_Harald Hoelzl“Globally, Malaysia is amongst the world’s most progressive countries in driving the Story of Visionary Mobility further for the BMW Group. This signifies not only a strong demand for electro-mobility in the country but the need for its long-term sustainability. To facilitate this vision, BMW Group Malaysia will continue to expand the accessibility of charging facilities to electrified vehicle drivers nationwide,” said Mr. Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.

The Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays are in addition to BMW Group Malaysia’s partnership with Malaysia Green Technology Corporation’s ChargEV network, which are available to BMW PHEV owners via the BMW ChargeNow service. Hoelzl also added that with over 20 BMW i Charging Facilities across Malaysia, BMW Group Malaysia looks forward to growing the numbers with ParkEasy and Shell Malaysia to further pave the way for the Mobility of the Future in the country with the new Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays, and hope to see more of such initiatives in the future.

Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays_Sunway_BMW iWallbox_ParkEasy_MalaysiaBeginning in July 2019, owners of BMW plug-in hybrid electric vehicles will be entitled to exclusive BMW Privileges at the Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays*. This includes an e-starter pack for new BMW PHEV owners and an e-gift card to existing BMW PHEV owners for the use of the facilities at the Sunway Group properties. The promo code is available from today until 31 July 2019, and is limited to 2,000 users.

Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah_Founder & Chairman_Sunway Group_MalaysiaSpeaking at the launch ceremony, Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group said, “Sustainability is not an abstract concept to us. The Sunway Group itself was founded on the concept of sustainable development. This area where we are gathered today was once a barren land of disused and abandoned mining pools. Sunway rehabilitated the land, restored the ecosystem and developed Malaysia’s first integrated green township. The late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s founding father, described it as “transforming a wasteland into a wonderland” when he visited us. Sunway City Kuala Lumpur is now home to a vibrant community of more than 200,000 people living, working, playing, and studying in a safe, healthy and connected environment; and we are not finished yet. We plan to integrate technology even more deeply to establish Sunway City Kuala Lumpur as a model “smart sustainable city” of the 21st century. Today’s initiative marks another step in this direction.”

Datuk Iain Lo_Chairman_Shell MalaysiaFor Shell Malaysia, this move is to provide convenience and added value to its customers and consumers in general. “As Shell ventures on touchpoints beyond our Retail stations and into premium establishments, our main focus is to enhance our customers’ journey and offer an end-to-end solution for convenience. The collaboration with ParkEasy, in partnership with BMW Group Malaysia and the Sunway Group, gives us the opportunity to continue serving our customers with new technological ways to enhance their experience with us,” Datuk Iain Lo, Chairman of Shell Malaysia said.

With the support from Shell Malaysia, ParkEasy is expanding its network to include other progressive shopping malls to offer such facilities.

Warren Chan_CEO_ParkEasy_Malaysia“We developed ParkEasy as means of increasing parking efficiency and reduce the time spent looking around for a parking spot. When the opportunity to collaborate surfaced with Shell Malaysia, who then partnered us with BMW Group Malaysia and Sunway Group, we took the chance knowing full well that ParkEasy can successfully facilitate and enhance the charging behaviours of PHEV drivers in Malaysia with our parking reservation service. Working together with Shell Malaysia who initiated this idea, is one of our first steps towards more innovations yet to come,” said Mr. Warren Chan, CEO of ParkEasy.

The ParkEasy platform is a mobile application that will allow electric vehicle (EV) or PHEV users to reserve a spot at the Reserve + Shell Recharge Bays up to 60 minutes ahead, assuring drivers of parking and charging availability. Powered by BMW i Charging facilities, users will receive complimentary recharging to replenish their vehicles’ batteries, as the credits in their ParkEasy mobile application will only be deducted for the reservation and hourly use of the parking bays. This cashless transaction is also aimed at cultivating ethical charging behaviour among EV and PHEV users i.e. to reduce the hogging of charging bays.

The app is available for download via Apple App Store and Google Play.

As part of its role as a responsible corporate citizen, Goodyear Malaysia has donated tyres to Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 20 (SK 20) in Shah Alam for use in the school’s recreational activities as well as workshop training to teach students the importance of recycling.

Goodyear Malaysia_Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 20_SK20_Recycled Tyres SculptureBesides the practical applications, some of the donated tyres have become decorative pieces around the school. The school used some of the tyres to create sculptures that offer a differentiated learning environment for the SK 20 students. The sculpture idea was inspired by the two statues at the 2018 Cotton Bowl that were crafted out of Goodyear tyres. The Cotton Bowl is annual college American football match, played between two teams in the semi-finals as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college football league.

Goodyear Malaysia_SK 20_Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 20_Shah Alam_Anthony Fonseka_Aizatul AshrafThis initiative was spearheaded by Aizatul Ashraf, a teacher at SK 20 who noticed the bare school grounds. “Schoolchildren absorb information and knowledge from many sources, including their surroundings. By showing how the tyres are used as pots for plants and decorations around the school, I hope that they learn that everything can be put to good use with the right mindset,” said Aizatul.

Anthony Fonseka, Marketing Communication and Service Manager, Goodyear Malaysia said, “We are more than happy to support this community in which we are proud to be a part of. We know the tyres are being put to good use, so we hope that this will inspire and empower the students of SK 20 to take care of the environment by constantly finding new ways to repurpose used items in a safe environment.”

Goodyear Malaysia_Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 20_Shah Alam_Recycled Tyres“The tyres that we donated to the school would have been recycled and so are unsuitable for the market. We are happy to see them serving a new decorative and practical reasons, which to us is the same as being recycled. We now have more space in our inventory and the school has new tyres put to good use. We’d say it’s a win-win situation!” he added.

Denza Concept X_NEVThe Denza Concept X has made its debut at the 2019 Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macau International Auto Show and is slated for deliveries in early 2020. That makes it less than a year from now, when the concept vehicle has just been shown. How is this possible?

Denza, for those who don’t know, is a brand jointly developed by two automotive powerhouses – Daimler AG and BYD. Both are established automotive brands and very much involved in electric vehicles. Yes, the Denza is an EV. Or as these companies would like to call it – an NEV (New Energy Vehicle).

Denza Concept X_FrontWe had briefly mentioned the Denza brand when we covered Geely’s purchase of a stake in Daimler. Denza is China’s first new energy automotive brand developed via a joint venture by two large automotive groups. Daimler is no stranger on the global stage, with its Mercedes-Benz brand as well as its foray into electrification. BYD too has grown from just another China automaker doing copy+paste jobs to one that is churning out petrol-powered and electric cars, buses, trucks and vans for the domestic market. It is a major manufacturer for automotive and phone batteries and counts Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway as a major shareholder of its Hong Kong-listed BYD Co.

Denza Concept X_Styled By Mercedes-BenzThe Denza Concept X is a seven-seater SUV designed by Mercedes-Benz. According to Gorden Wagener, chief design officer at Daimler AG, about 90% of the Concept X design will make it into the production model. There are supposed to be two variants available – a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric model capable of 500 km travel. 0 – 100 km/h acceleration is expected to be in the 5-seconds region. We presume that the production Denza model will import parts from the Mercedes-Benz EQC.

Mercedes-Benz EQC EV
Mercedes-Benz EQC EV

The China government has been favouring electrification to combat pollution in its cities as well as to reduce its reliance on oil imports. And with a population of 1.4 billion, it is an attractive market to enter for any brand pushing for EVs. An earlier study estimates that 46% of all cars in China will be electric by 2040. And that is approximately 176 million cars.

For Daimler, this is an opportunity to target different market segments – the premium market with its Mercedes-Benz brand, and the mass market with Denza, giving it better economies of scale. From reports, the Denza will be marketed and sold by Beijing Mercedes-Benz Sales Service Co., Ltd.
