Perodua maintains No.1 spot in first half of 2014

Perodua continues to be the best-selling motor vehicle brand in the country registering total sales of 94,500 units in the first half of 2014. The company’s leading position comes despite a year-on-year shrinkage in sales volume from the corresponding period in 2013 where 96,900 vehicles were sold.

President and CEO of Perodua, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh noted that, “Despite maintaining our position, there has been a minor erosion of our market share to 28.4% from a market share of 30.9% in the same period last year.”

Aminar’s figures are based on Perodua’s estimations of a 6.2% growth in the total industry volume (TIV) from 313,500 in the first half of 2013 to 332,800 registered in the corresponding period this year.

Perodua’s volume shrinkage in the face of a growing market suggests to us that consumers are getting increasingly affluent and willing to spend even more on their cars. Aminar attributes the situation to more intense competition from other makes that are offering increasingly competitive and affordable products as well as tightened financing guidelines. Of course, another factor that cannot be discounted would be possibly declining sales of the Viva with consumers anticipating the arrival of the company’s much-touted all-new model set for launch later this year.

“We are revising our sales number to 193,000 by year end from a target of 197,000 units announced earlier in the year as competition is far more formidable than previously expected,” he added.

The aftersales business saw growth, however, registering a 4% increase in service intake from 924,000 vehicles in the first half of 2013 to 956,000 vehicles in the same period this year. As such, revenue from the servicing business correspondingly increased by the same proportion from RM261 million to RM272 million. Aminar further highlights that there is an increase in the number of customers returning to authorized service centres from 261,000 to 277,700.
