I have 4 small meters on my 740 - engine oil pressure, voltmeter, fuel and
water temperature.

The position of the voltmeter needle is dependent on the electrical
components used. With headlight and AC off, the needle should be pointing
vertically (as mentioned in the owner's handbook).

Just curious, 740 comes with a 4 forward speed gear box. I was counting
the gear shift last evening when I was driving on a straight road. There
seems to be a fifth gear when the speed reaches 85 km. Betul tak?

But the owner's handbook does not say there is an overdrive. and there is
no overdrive button on the gear shift, neither the yellow arrow light on
the instrumental panel.

How do I verify the model of the gear box?

First check with your previous owner if he did any modification to your
car!!

To identify , go down to the bottom driver side of your car and find the
label at the center body of the tranny. They should indicate whether is
AW70, AW71 of AW71L.

I go a yellow indicate 5th from my original manual tranny, now the wiring
guy convert it into overdrive indicator, the overdrive will engage at
approximately 98Km/hr, most shop claim this type of tranny give better
mileage in the long distance.

That means the car originally come with ZF gear box. This gear box is very
problematic. Guess the previous owner had already changed it.

Hi guys,
Do you notice that our 740 air con allows outside air to come into our
cabin ? Any possibility to block outside air from coming in to our cabin
as I don't find any recycle button ? Is the temperature lever just belong
the snow flakes control serves any function ?

to block outside air especially during tailing a diesel & 'sampah'truck.
i had realised that it was a standard feature of volvo's 'tolak kiri-
kanan' 740 air cond switch. nothing's else we can do...

hi thing,
ZF g/box not so poblematic lah...actually, most of the time, its OD wire
je rosak...

There is an inlet for outside air to enter for all cars. (obviously!)
If u can find that inlet, just block it up. On the 850, i recall it's
under the black plastic cover "below" the Fr wipers ie. inside the engine
bay. remove that plastic piece which goes the width of the engine
compartment, you will find a large open hole (can't remember right or
left side). take an appropriate piece of plastic or whatever durable
material and seal it up. that ought to ensure no "fresh air" enters the
pass compartment, whatever position u put the recirculation/fresh air
button/lever.

If after that, there's still air entering, then it may not be from yr
vents. It could be from worn rubber door seals.

Hi Volvoman,

ZF g/box does not have OD lah... The one with OD is AW g/box.
