Hi Vol 9833,

Thanks for the pointer. RM 100++ sounds reasonable. Will keep that in
mind. Right now have to save some RM to restore a dent on the boot cover
after the incident with a tree.

SA6,

How much will it cost me to do basic servicing for my 740 GLE? My boss
told me yesterday that the car`s due for servicing. In other words, "You
are paying for it son!" :(

Where do you send yours for servicing? I have a feeling our regular
mechanic is a rip off. The car always go home with more problems. Crank
shaft pully lah, bush lah, suspension lah ...

And by the way,

Is it just my volvo or all 740 air cons cannot be switched off? I can turn
the dial to 0 and yet the air con still blows.

My aircon cannot be switched off completely as well, even when I turned
the dial to 0.

About the trip meter, I checked with the mechanic again and he told me
that there is no doubt that it can be fixed, but there is a danger of
breaking a needle-like thing when you try to pull and push something. I
havent got the chance to see the meter; so really cant visualise how it
looks like. Once broken, one got to change the entire odometer, which may
cost RM1k+. He does not mind doing it for free (as he has the parts from
a potong shop) but no guarantee that the needle-like thing will not
break. So, now in a dilemma.

I think what you guys mean is that the aircond blower fan in the dash
cannot be completely turned off. The aircond can be turned off but the fan
can't. I think this is a safety feature whereby the air will continue to
be circulated even when the aircond is off. It turns at a very low speed &
can be hardly noticed unless you put your hand at the outlet to feel for
the draft. My 240 has this feature & I don't mind it at all. With regard
to the trip meter, I had the odometer in my 850 repaired by my mechanic &
he may be able to do the same for your 740. If you're interested, do let
me know & I'll give you directions to my mechanic. BTW, the odometer
repair cost me RM120-00 just to change a small nylon gear.

BlueBrick, sometime car are like that when we changed the belting, than
the machanic realise the rubber bush for alternater worn, when changing
the brake pad they found our the disc has worn...bla bla bla...all sort of
problem came out of the sudden. That is becuase our car already old, most
of the part are suppose to due for change but we did not realise it so now
we whole sort of problem to solve...take it easy...change the parts if
nacessary..

About the Aircon, I am not sure you guy like mine, I presume so. The fan
blower switch (the one which has 0,1,2,3. Black in color) are tomonitor
the fan speed. If you notice there is another 2 knock (one for blown air
position and the bottom one is for heater). Check out the top one which
can adjust the fan blowing position, the should be 3 light blue color snow
flake with 3 different size starting from larget to small (all 3 of them).
Now if you notice it , put the level away from theese 3 blue snow flake to
totally off the aircon. Try it an DO LET ME KNOW the outcome....

About the speedomet eerrrrrrr..... ok here is what I have to say, plastic
parts are prone to brakage if we didn't do it right. If the something
broken change it lor what to do..otherwise get a working second hand unit
and put in. I managed to fix the meter myself 2 yrs back and last 2 day
I managed to take out the meter again to add in a voltmeter to the left
top area, I only left an oil pressure meter to the top right coner which I
had yet to find.

SA6, thanks. I guess you are right about the surprises. On the air-con, I
think you'll have to get feedback from niaoniao. My top lever will only
move to the second snow flake :) Old car, as you said.

Think the odometer/tripmeter should be the same like 240. Got mine change
(DIY) after extensive soul searching from kl right to ipoh and finally
found it in volvo klang shop(its home made as i gather) It is usually one
of the gear which one or few tooth broke. it cost me RM60 bucks! someone
did ask me to look at scale model car(tamiya etc) parts but couldn't find
one thats the same size.

When the air-cond is on, the blower must run at least minimal speed to
prevent cooling coil freezed. So, even you put the fan knob to 0. The fan
will still run at speed 1. When you push the air-cond knob away from
cooling, air-cond is off, so the blower is not needed.

SA6-san, so you are 1 "meter" away from my console panel. Big Smile BTW, how
does the volt meter needle move? I mean is it fluctuate or stable? Mine
some time go very low but sometime ok.

SA6 was spot on; the aircon will be off if you move the level to the
fourth position towards the right, i.e. the sign without the ice flake
(the one with the white arrow pointing either your feet or little brother).

Alright...now you understand how your 740 aircon work Big Smile and you got
several more 740 member here to share all question related to your car.

thing-san glad to hear from you again, well I almost done up my meter
panel like yours except mine now doesn't have the oil pressure meter,
still looking, I could add a turbo meter just for fancy look but not point
if it is not runing. About the meter movement, in the morning usually it
goes up to almost center. When I on the headlight it came down to a little
below 1/3 area but if the aircon on than it move to the lower red zone,
that is when it stay at idle. However, if the car is on the run the
pointer will be at slightly above the red zone.
