I had the same problem before when I first got my 740, the odometer that
indicate the speed is function but the trip for the mileage was not
functioning so I took off my meter and check for any defective, found out
the gear was worn so I changed it. It functioning until today.

I don't get what your previous owner was thinking, if he is a real ex FA
machanic, he should be much well verse with Volvo than DIY guy like me.

Dear SA6

My brother, who is an enthusiast of DIY, told me that the shift between
gear 1 and 2 is not that smooth. He advises me to flush the automatic
transmission gear box. Does this help? Is it a complicated job and what
are other things that I should know or beware of before I send my new babe
to the workshop?

hi niao niao,

i had this problem too, you may try a flush or change the fluid and put in
some additives, otherwise, make sure u warm the car up completely before
you drive,... it should change.

FYi. to change to a re-cond auto gearbox... price whould be around RM2.5k
inclusive of workmanship and fluids .... but do this only as a last resort.

how are the other gears? try to use dexII auto oil ... Shell has it and
mobil has it too, coz about RM11 to RM13 per litre ...

hope it helps... you may want to gather a few more opinions...

cheers

niaoniao, a complete flush is good for your gearbox. First you should
identify the type of gearbox your car is having now. For 1989 and below
740 model auto gear box is most probabily equip with the ZF type while for
1990 and newer model are either AW70 or AW71 or AW71L. In my opinion, the
Aw is a better choice despite of the claim the ZF was bullet proof build.
THe AW was by Aishin-Warner, Aishin is a Japan maker who also build
gearbox for Toyota Supra, and the AW is serviceable and they even had
repair kit to overhaul it. Here in peninsular ther are several should who
do this work.

Mine auto gear box model is AW71L, I had it flush 4 times already before
full use of it. I had to do it becuase the original ATF was too damn
dirty. For your case my advise is to have ti flush by shop who got the
autogear flushing machine. They pump in new oil while the oil one were
runing out from the other pipe. If you do it yourself is a little messey.

Dear all

Help needed. The weatherstrip in the engine compartment which prevents
water from sipping through when running down from the windscreen is
missing (the rubber runs across the rear of engine compartment). A bit
worry since the distributor is just sitting at that spot. I have been
hunting around in Kuching but not available. Anyone can help?

Hi BlueBrick,
I recall i've done the odometer for my previous 740 for only rm 100++.
Like SA6 said, it just a worn small gear inside.I guess it's quite common
problem for 740. As for 940, till today so far so good.
