This should be an easy review of a model but it is complicated in this market by a very direct competitor, not in price point but in heritage and association. Like all automotive groupings, brands of the Toyota group have the benefit of shared technology, engineering, and parts. It only makes financial sense to share these resources especially in the face of rising raw material and shipping costs.

The Toyota Veloz is a product of this form of sharing, taking shape across different brands and nameplates with differing specifications. They are all built on the same platform, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase and in neighbouring markets, they also use different powertrain options to differentiate the brands and pricing. However, it is less straightforward in Malaysia and due to that, there are those who rain on the Veloz’s parade.

The Veloz uses the shared mass produced and proven 1.5L 2NR-VE 4-cylinder, all-aluminium engine with Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing – intelligent) which is found in a variety of vehicles, including its Perodua relative, the Alza. For the Veloz, this engine also produces 106 PS @ 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm of torque @ 4,200 rpm that goes to the front wheels (the preceding Avanza / Rush has a rear-wheel-drive layout). Also, new to this segment for Toyota is the 7-speed CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) which is lighter because it is more compact, and is tuned with a bias for fuel efficiency. It also claims to offer lower loss of power in transmission to further improve fuel economy.

And if the driving feels too sedate, there is the steering-mounted Drive mode button which is akin to switching off overdrive. And if that is also not sufficient, the gear lever comes with a manual shifting option for more precise control. Like most new cars in the market, the Veloz offers Power, Eco and Normal settings for different driving preferences.

Toyota Veloz_17 Inch WheelThe driving is where the Veloz feels different and this unfortunately is not noticed when comparing specs on paper. With a greater ground clearance of 190 mm (vs 160 mm of the Alza), and riding on larger 17″ wheels, it looks and feels more like a crossover as opposed to a wagon. The larger tyres, along with the longer suspension travel and rebound, soak up more of the road’s imperfections and provide occupants with greater comfort. Similarly, the handling is also influenced by this physical difference, giving the Veloz an edge in terms of stability. A surprising discovery after driving both is how much smoother the acceleration feels with the Veloz, despite the larger 205/50 R17 tyres (compared to the 195/60 R16 of the comparable Alza AV).

But the driving isn’t the only difference between the 2. Appearance-wise, though they look similar, just about every body panel is different, from the bonnet to bumpers to fenders, so swapping out body panels to make one look like the other isn’t straightforward nor economical. Even the LED headlights are shaped differently. The rear is where there is the least amount of difference with the Veloz having a central LED light strip on the liftgate to unify the LED tail light clusters. This is probably the cheapest and easiest mod to make the Alza look similar. Further, the Veloz comes standard with roof rails, allowing for a rack fixture without affecting the paintwork. These rails can carry an additional load of 75 kg, enabling you to expand the Veloz’s cargo capacity. This would also be useful on roadtrips that require all 7 seats to be occupied. Additionally, the front passenger door of the Veloz comes with a touch sensor for locking and unlocking, so both front doors can be used for keyless entry.

In the cabin, the differences are also apparent when you look long enough. The lines of the dashboard, the extended armrests with grab handles on the doors, the brushed metal trim, the ambient lighting, the wireless charger, and soft-touch material on the dashboard and door cards give the Veloz a more premium-feeling interior. There are however, still hard plastics present as there is no denying the price segment it sits in. Not as obvious, but also still present, are the outside temperature reading on the digital multi-info display (there are some who like to know how hot it is outside), climate control, and the wireless connectivity of the 9″ infotainment system for Apple CarPlay / Android Auto.

Like the Qi wireless phone charger, this feature is also naturally great for those who don’t like the sight of dangling cables. But unfortunately for these people, there are many opportunities to dangle USB cables as all 3 rows feature power outlets for charging smart devices (the 3rd row only has a 12V socket for that). Another almost-hidden feature which is also great for picky drivers is the tilt and telescoping steering column for a finer adjustment of driving position.

And while the cabin bears the same dimensions and the seats offer the same flexible arrangements, such as the ‘long sofa’ (seat belts are still required to be used when the vehicle is moving), the Veloz’s combination leather seats have handy smaller pockets included as standard on the front seat backrests. One downside is the absence of a headrest for the middle passenger in the 2nd row.

Toyota Safety Sense_Digital Video Recorder_CamerasAvailable only in 1 variant, the Veloz gets all that Toyota has to offer including the Toyota Safety Sense suite which includes Pre-Collision System (PCS); Lane Departure Warning (LDW); Lane Departure Prevention (LDP); and Lane Keeping Control (LKC). There is also Adaptive Cruise Control, Blindspot Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Front Departure Alert, and a 3D panoramic view monitor. A front Digital Video Recorder comes standard and there is an option to add a rear recorder.

The Veloz is also fitted with a Vehicle Telematics System (VTS) which allows you to keep track of your vehicle’s location via an app. The real-time feature allows you to check on the status of the vehicle including the speed it is travelling at (if you are not in the vehicle). In case of vehicle theft, the VTS can enable the Command Centre to locate it via GPS and inform the relevant authorities who can help retrieve the vehicle.

So, is the Toyota Veloz worth paying RM95,000 for? That really depends on how much value you place on features like tilt & telescopic steering, wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto connectivity, wireless phone charger, and ambient lighting. Understandably, there are those who don’t care for such features. Also, if you have no love for features such as the higher ground clearance and ride height, the roof rails, the climate control, and built-in seat pockets, or even the 2-tone exterior colour scheme, then by all means save your money. But if you do need and / or want these features, then the Toyota Veloz presents you with a well-appointed package at under RM100k.

And you also get a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty with the Veloz.

PROTON Deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah (right), and CEO Dr Li Chunrong (2nd from right) with senior management from GEELY and smart at Auto Shanghai 2023.

Last year, PROTON had committed to expanding into the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market as it entered an agreement to be the official importer and distributor for smart vehicles in Malaysia and Thailand, through its subsidiary PRO-NET. The company is planning to launch the smart #1 in Malaysia in Q4 2023, followed by the smart #3, which will first be available for sale in China and Europe before expanding to other markets such as Malaysia.

According to Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer of PROTON and Chairman of PRO-NET, the company will enter the NEV market in Malaysia, taking part in the government’s objective to transform the country into a regional hub for next-generation vehicles (NxGV). The introduction of the mild hybrid powered Proton X90 will be the first step, followed by the launch of the smart #1. However, it is considering to accelerate its NEV product introduction timeline after signing a Heads of Agreement (HoA) with Geely, and a subsequent visit to the Zeekr intelligent factory by the MITI Minister.

smart #1_EV_Front_RearIn preparation for the smart #1’s launch, PROTON has conducted limited test sessions with selected media at its test track. There are plans for further sessions with the media as well as public previews before it goes on sale. Additionally, PROTON is focused on planning for the smart #1’s launch, including dealer recruitment, charging solutions, and innovative ways to provide customers with a brand experience that aligns with the core values of the smart brand.

“Ultimately, we envision PRO-NET to be the main driver for EV models at PROTON, meaning that we will also add to the range of smart models in Malaysia in the future. Our resources are fully focused on ensuring the smooth market introduction of the #1 and that customers will receive the support expected by buyers of a premium EV product,” added Dr Li Chunrong.

BMW Motorrad Malaysia has introduced 2 new touring motorcycle variants from the BMW K 1600 portfolio i.e. BMW K 1600 GT and BMW K 1600 GTL.

Both the new bikes come with updated features and refreshed design, powered by the narrowest 6-cylinder in-line engine in its series production. The BMW K 1600 GT is agile and dynamic, equipped with an upgraded full-LED headlight for enhanced safety. On the other hand, the BMW K 1600 GTL is engineered for shared riding experiences, designed to comfortably transport 2 people in style and comfort.

“For over a decade now, we have presented our powerful and luxurious six-cylinder equipment at the highest level with the BMW K 1600 models. Now, while still remaining true to design, we are thrilled to present new exclusive features to the New BMW K 1600 GT and BMW K 1600 GTL, that will not only enhance the touring experience but ultimately offer what tourers are built for: to enable new adventures in every horizon – through diverse cities, countries and landscapes, in the company of friends or to meet new people along the way,” said Hans de Visser, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.BMW K 1600 GT_Touring

The BMW K 1600 GT comes in 2 distinct colourways i.e. the classic Black Storm Metallic and the Style Sport which features a striking combination of light white, racing blue metallic and racing red body colours and highlights. This includes the golden brake calliper at the front and the contrasting paintwork in light white on the front-wheel cover. Meanwhile, the K 1600 GTL is available in Black Storm Metallic and Gravity Blue Metallic (Style Exclusive). A new special edition Option 719 Meteoric Dust will also be made available for both the K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL.

The new variants are fitted with a Engine Protection Guard for the black 6-cylinder in-line engine, low electrically adjustable windscreens and full-LED headlights that feature the Light Icon and Adaptive Cornering Lights, along with Daytime Riding Lights, LED Auxiliary Lights, Ground-Level Lighting as well as additional fog lights. integrated navigation system with the BMW Motorrad Connected application. Bluetooth function is also available for telephony and music playback, along with WiFi for navigation.

The oil / water cooled 4-stroke in-line 6-cylinder engine has a capacity of 1,649 cc and has 2 overhead camshafts placed above the drive shaft. The engine can produce 160 hp (118 kW) @ 6,750 rpm and maximum torque of 180 Nm @ 5,250 rpm. Top speed for both bikes is 200 km/h. Power is transmitted to the bike via a multiple-disc clutch in oil bath with a 6-speed helical-toothed transmission, allowing for better dynamism and agility.

A revision has been made to comply with EU-5 regulations where emission control is offered via a closed-loop 3-way catalytic converter to output approximately 137 grams per kilometre of travel. Fuel consumption for both variants is officially measured at 5.9 litres per 100 km. Further, the alternator is a 700 W 3 phase-alternator (nominal power) paired with a maintenance-free 12 V / 26 Ah battery.

The centrepiece of the suspension is the cast aluminium bridge-type frame. The front suspension of the K 1600 GT is a BMW Motorrad Duolever on a central spring strut suspension, while rear suspension is a cast aluminium single-sided swing arm with BMW Motorrad Paralever. The K 1600 GTL is also fitted with the BMW Motorrad Duolever at the front, but has a central shock absorber with helical spring. At the rear, it uses a central spring strut with coil spring, and features adjustable rebound stage damping and spring preload,  making for optimum damping comfort and stable handling.

Besides the BMW Motorrad Integral ABS Pro, the new variants also feature 3 riding modes i.e. Rain, Road and Dynamic modes. Owners will also be able to enjoy riding assistance features such as the Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Engine Brake Control (MSR), Hill Start Control Pro, as well as the Dynamic ESA Next Generation (with Automatic Load Levelling) which ensures optimum handling and riding dynamics. Riders can also make use of the standard Reverse Assistant for effortless manoeuvring.

Furthermore, riding comfort is enhanced with the heating feature for both the grips and seats, adjustable handbrake and clutch levers, as well as Cruise Control. More convenience is also offered with the standard addition of the case holder, integral pannier cases in body colour, tyre pressure control as well as the smartphone tray with USB port.BMW K 1600 GTL_Touring

Exclusive to the BMW K 1600 GTL is Audio System 2.0 which has radio functions, equalizer sound profiles, and front speakers integrated into the fairing, along with the variant-exclusive top case which offers generous storage space and is perfect for shared riding experiences. Previously optional equipment but now made standard for both new variants include Keyless Ride, central locking system, Gear Shift Assist Pro and the anti-theft alarm.

The retail prices (on the road, with BMW Motorrad Malaysia’s all-new 3-Year Warranty and 3-Year Roadside Assistance Programmes, but without insurance) are RM174,500 for the BMW K 1600 GT, and RM183,500 for the BMW K 1600 GTL.

The Maxim e-hailing app has added a new “Heading Out” button to further enhance user experience. The “Heading Out” button was created to smoothen the communication process between the customer and Maxim Partner-driver.

Maxim_App_E-HailingThe button will only appear once you have made the booking in the app. It is meant to facilitate and hasten communication between passenger and driver. In some cases, especially when you are in a rush, you might not see the message that the Maxim Partner-driver has arrived and is waiting at the location designated by you. If you are in a rush to the Maxim ride, your focus would not be on sending a message to the Partner-driver. The “Heading Out” button eases this process as all you have to do is press it to notify the Partner-driver that you are on the way to the pinned location.

Pushing the button when you are ready and heading out will automatically notify the Partner-driver without resorting to calling or messaging. Or you could be on the phone with someone else while walking to your ride and be uncontactable. This button potentially cuts down on disappointment of a canceled ride as the general rule for waiting is 5 minutes.

An internal survey conducted by Maxim after introducing this new feature showed that feedback had been positive feedback when users started to use the new button frequently. The number of users that used this button is also increasing by the day.

“I’m glad that Maxim E-hailing took the initiative to come out with this new button, now easier for me to know status of the passengers. I’m good to wait for a little time for them to arrive, I just need the confirmation from the passenger that they’re coming,” said Changgat, a Maxim E-hailing Partner-driver.

You can find the Maxim app in the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Huawei App Gallery, Get App and
Samsung Galaxy Store.

Calling all owners of Chevrolet and SAAB vehicles in Malaysia. You are strongly advised to attend to this airbag recall especially before the holiday travel period. The recall affects 3,725 units of Chevrolet and SAAB vehicles here. This campaign to replace the Takata driver airbag inflators has actually been going on since June 2022 as Chevrolet views this as a serious matter since there is a potential risk of fatality if the faulty airbags deploy in the event of a collision.

The reason for the recall stems from non-desiccated PSAN propellant tablets inside the driver airbag inflators in affected vehicles. The propellant tablets may experience alteration after exposure to high temperature and daylight temperature cycles in high humidity environments. During deployment, the inflators may rupture if gas generation exceeds the ability of the inflators to vent the gas. The rupture may send dangerous shrapnel towards the driver and occupants, with potentially fatal consequences.Chevrolet Orlando_Dashboard_Steering

The affected models are:

  • Chevrolet Cruze: model year 2010–2015
  • Chevrolet Orlando: model year 2013–2015
  • Chevrolet Sonic: model year 2013–2014
  • Chevrolet TRAX model year 2017
  • SAAB 9-3: model year 2007

A spokesperson for Chevrolet Sales Thailand, the company responsible for the recall campaign in the Southeast Asian region, said: “The response rate in Malaysia has been below expectation. This is alarming as fatalities may occur if the faulty airbags deploy in an accident. We hope Malaysian motorists will help spread the alert, or forward it to friends and loved ones who may own an affected Chevrolet vehicle. Affected Chevrolet owners who did not receive alerts or calls due to outdated data are encouraged to contact our call team or log on to the recall campaign microsite for more details. For the safety of you and your loved ones, it is ideal to have the airbag replaced before holiday travels begin.”Chevrolet_Steering Wheel

According to Chevrolet, since the affected vehicles are not new, it has been difficult to trace the owners due to outdated customer data. This setback is further compounded by the lack of an official Chevrolet office in Malaysia. However, as the free airbag replacements are handled by selected Honda authorised dealerships, Chevrolet hopes that affected owners will take advantage of the convenience of Honda’s comprehensive network of service centres.

While the deadline for the collaboration has not been announced, affected owners are encouraged to take advantage of this convenience as soon as possible, as it will be very difficult to access recall repairs once the collaboration with Honda Malaysia ends.

The recall campaign is conducted with the approval and cooperation of the Road Transport Department Malaysia (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia, or JPJ). Since Chevrolet does not currently have an office in Malaysia, the company has appointed 2 local partners to carry out the campaign.

For communications, Saphan9 Engagement, a communications and content consultancy has been appointed to handle the recall campaign including announcements, customer outreach, digital assets, information and data management. Recall repairs will be handled by selected Honda authorised dealerships. The recall repair will be free-of-charge.

Affected owners are encouraged to visit the Chevrolet recall microsite: www.chevrolettakatarecallmy.com where they will be guided to the airbag recall repair via 3 simple steps:

  1.  Locate the VIN number: Instructions on where to locate the VIN number of the vehicle will be provided. The VIN number is essential to confirm the status of the vehicle.
  2. Call for appointment: A list participating Honda authorised dealers will be displayed. Owners can call the nearest participating Honda authorised dealer with the VIN number to check if their vehicle is affected. Owners of affected vehicles can obtain an appointment for a free recall repair at that dealership.
  3. Owners will share their contact details to enable Chevrolet to share important updates regarding the recall campaign.

A call-team has also been set up to contact customers who may have difficulty connecting to the internet. For further enquiries, vehicle owners can call +6011 3129 9963 or +6011 3129 9965 or visit www.chevrolettakatarecallmy.com
