Having had the coupe version in our market for over a year, Nissan has now completed the 370Z range in our market by launching the 370Z Roadster in the ongoing Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2010 (KLIMS ’10). The two-seater power-operated soft-top convertible, assumes centre stage of a Nissan pavilion that also includes the newly-launched Teana and X-Trail alongside the Juke, Elgrand and March – all models slated for possible introduction in our market.

Like its coupe brother, the 370Z is powered by the 3.7-litre VQ35VHR V6 engine which makes 329hp @ 7,000rpm and 363Nm @ 5,200rpm. Edaran Tan Chong Motor offers the 370Z Roadster with a 7-speed auto as standard, with the 6-speed manual with SynchroRev is available only on a special request basis. Both variants are priced identically at RM399,900 on-the-road inclusive of insurance in Peninsula Malaysia.

Another eye-catching display at Nissan’s pavilion is the Nissan Juke, a small front-wheel drive crossover powered by a new 1.6-litre Direct Injection Gasoline Turbo (DIG-T) paired with Nissan’s X-Tronic CVT. Inside, the Juke features what Nissan calls ‘Intelligent Control Display’, a multi-function info display in the vein of BMW’s iDrive system. The system allows the driver to switch between three driving modes – Normal, Sports, and Eco-Drive.

The Nissan Elgrand is not an unknown quantity in our market thanks to grey imports, and ETCM appears convinced that there can be a business case for this massive MPV in our market. Powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine paired with Nissan’s X-Tronic CVT, the Elgrand is also on display by Nissan at KLIMS alongside the 1.2-litre three-cylinder Nissan March, another model which now appears set to arrive in our market.

Familiar faces in Nissan’s pavilion would include the X-Trail and Teana, both new models launched by ETCM this year. Nissan’s pavilion in KLIMS ’10 is situated at Booth 1B08, Hall 1.

Although Honda, Toyota, and to a certain extent, Porsche, has been hogging the limelight of hybrid powertrain development, Isuzu has been quietly making strides on that front. At the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2010 (KLIMS ’10) in the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), the company will showcase its advancements in this area by displaying a diesel-hybrid version of the N-Series truck, commercially available in Japan already.

As Isuzu vehicles usually cater for commercial applications, the focus of its hybrid powertrains would first and foremost be on durability and reliability. The Isuzu N-Series hybrid utilizes lithium-ion batteries, which offer virtues such as compact sizing, high output and long service life. The compact size of these batteries also gives Isuzu advantages in packaging, and the N-Series hybrid does not suffer penalties in terms of payload and ground clearance.

Isuzu’s hybrid setup is also simpler than most, as its start-stop function is only activated when the driver shifts the transmission to ‘Neutral’. The engine restarts when the driver selects ‘Drive’.

As usual, on-board computers manages the hybrid drivetrain system. The electric motor boosts the diesel engine’s power on start-up to improve take-off acceleration and disengages on cruising speed to reduce drag on the engine. On deceleration, the engine is disengaged to allow the motor to recover excessive kinetic energy. However, the driver can re-engage the engine to summon engine braking by downshifting the gears.

Other displays in Isuzu’s booth at KLIMS ’10 is the Isuzu D-Max pick-up truck in various guises – a racer in the Dakar Rally, a standard production variant, and also one dressed-up in heavy levels of bling. Isuzu’s booth is situated at Booth 1D06, Hall 1.

Petaling Jaya, 1 November 2010 – Prima Merdu Sdn Bhd, as the exclusive importer of Mazda vehicles in Malaysia, and Bermaz Motor Sdn Bhd, the exclusive distributor for Mazda in Malaysia, today unveiled the new Mazda5, a compact 7-seater MPV at the Sunway Pyramid shopping centre in Petaling Jaya.

Priced at RM150,000 (on-the-road price without insurance), the Mazda5 further extends the current range of Mazda vehicles – currently available is the Mazda2, Mazda3, Miata, RX-8, CX-7, CX-9,and Mazda8. As a record of sorts, this makes the Mazda range available in Malaysia one of the most complete amongst all Mazda distributors in the world.

The Mazda5 carries the current Mazda DNA of a huge smiling front face, and has a flexible seating arrangement that can be used to carry up to seven occupants, or be adapted easily into a versatile multi-activity vehicle for people with active lifestyles. Access to the second and third rows is through powered sliding doors, one on each side of the vehicle behind the driver and front passenger doors, while a huge rear tailgate opens for access to the rear storage area. The rearmost seats fold down for additional luggage storage space and a 5-seater arrangement. Alternatively, the rearmost seats can be split in the middle to render a 6-seater arrangement. Similarly, the middle row seats can be folded down – the possible combinations are many, to suit individual requirements.

The Mazda5 incorporates Mazda’s Nagare design language – Mazda’s own concept based on the flow of wind and water, to produce an intuitive sense of motion with flowing lines that are designed to be eye-catching and appealing. The Mazda5 also carries Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom philosophy of delivering the unique Mazda driving experience.

Inside, the Mazda presents a driving cockpit that is driver-oriented – features include twin meters for the driver, a leather-covered steering wheel, and a leather gear shift knob. New character illumination improves reading ease for the multi-information display on the instrument panel. A rear air-conditioner vent channels cool air to the rear passengers.

The powerplant is a 2.0 litre engine with Sequential Valve timing (S-VT) with an electronic throttle. Mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox with Active Adaptive Shift (AAS), the Mazda5 features slope control and adapts to driver patterns.

The Mazda5 inherits the NCAP 5 rating of its predecessor, has a three-point seat belt in every seat, and SRS airbags for the driver and front passenger. ISOFIX points and top tether anchor points for child seats are also available.

Seven colours are available – Clear Water Blue, Copper Red, Aluminium Metallic, Stormy Blue, Crystal White Pearl, Metropolitan Grey and Brilliant Black.

The Korean assault continues, and the next salvo is set to be fired by Naza-Kia, who will be unveiling the all-new Kia Sorento for our market at the upcoming Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2010 (KLIMS ’10). Prices have not been indicated as of now, but we expect a competitive figure.

Like it compatriot, the Hyundai Santa Fe facelift which will also launch at KLIMS ’10, the Sorento will be powered by the Hyundai-Kia 2.4-litre Theta-II engine rated to produce 172hp and 226Nm in this iteration. Unfortunately, there is no mention of the hugely impressive R-series diesel motor which Hyundai will offer with the Santa Fe in Naza-Kia’s announcement.

Unlike its predecessor, this new smarter-looking Sorento will no longer be sitting on a ladder frame but instead gets a monocoque chassis with all-round independent suspension. It still has a four-wheel drive system, so some (but markedly reduced) off-road prowess is presumably retained.

Like all recent Korean offerings, equipment levels are generous, and potential buyers can expect items such as push-button start ignition with a smart key, supervision cluster (Kia’s version of Optitron), in-dash 6CD changer, AUX, USB and iPod connectivity, Bluetooth connectivity and dual-zone climate control to head a lengthy list. Safety is taken care of by six airbags, ABS, ESC, and EBD. There is also Hill Start Assist Control and Downhill Brake Control to provide aid going up and down slopes.

After more than 120 years of development in automotive engine technologies, it is difficult to imagine that there is any ground left uncovered. In the last twenty or so years, there has admittedly been hardly any ground-breaking advancements in engine design, and most of the improvements in power output and fuel efficiency can be attributed to weight savings, developments in material technologies, and more precise electronic control of fuelling.

In the field of turbo-charging, the turbocharger remains much the same as the early editions, but improvements in the design of the fins, coupled with vast improvements in the electronic control systems and heat management systems makes the modern turbo charged engine as efficient and as durable as a conventional engine, whilst developing up to 50 percent more power. In the field of fuel injection, improved injector designs coupled with more precise engine control units has resulted in more powerful, yet fuel efficient engines.

The fact remains, however, that 70 to 80 percent of the energy contained in fuel is lost within the vehicle’s power train, and fails to be transferred as motive power to its wheels. In the quest for better fuel efficiency, many automakers are down-sizing engine capacities and are working on refining fuel management and engine management systems even further. The world is also looking at hydrogen fuel cells as an alternative, but costs are still prohibitively high, and until such time as suitable solutions can be found, hybrids are an interim measure.

Mazda has a history of making the seemingly impossible possible, as can be seen by its commercializing the rotary engine back in the early eighties. One of Mazda’s recent developments is centred on an engine configuration that will move towards ideal combustion – Mazda it calls the Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine.

Challenging the status quo of engine building convention, the HCCI engines from Mazda have a hitherto thought to be unachievable compression of 14:1 for both the gasoline and diesel engines. For the record, most modern gasoline engines run on a compression ratio of between 10:1 to 11:1, and racing engines run a little higher with special fuels. Diesel engines, on the other hand, are thought to need a compression ratio that is higher than 16: 1. Thanks to this and a number of technological breakthroughs, Mazda is on the verge of introducing, in the very near future, a car that is capable of achieving up to 30 kilometres per litre of fuel, without using hybrid technology. The overall umbrella for this development is named SKYACTIV by Mazda.

According to Mazda, hybrids are good only in start-stop traffic situations, where there are opportunities for the vehicle to recover energy, for example, during braking and coasting, and when the car is idling in traffic, the engine is turned off while the energy saved in the batteries serve to restart the vehicle motion and keep the air-conditioners working. Mazda goes further to explain that during long journeys on highways, there is very little energy regeneration, so the fuel savings are not that great then. Hybrid vehicles also pose some potential environmental hazard as the batteries would need to be disposed at some time or other. With this in mind, they set to work to develop a vehicle that would be as economical, if not more economical, than a hybrid.

At the Mazda Forum 2010, held recently in Tokyo, Japan, the second in an annual series that started in year 2009, Mazda announced that by 2011, the Mazda 2 will be the first vehicle to be equipped with SKY-ACTIV technology. Knowing Mazda, this is not an idle boast – I would think that they would already have completed all testing and are gearing for production prior to this announcement.

Ahead of its impending introduction at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2010 (KLIMS ’10), Hyundai-Sime Darby Motor has announced pricing for both variants of the Santa Fe facelift. Prices start at RM158,888 with insurance for the 2.4-litre petrol model going up to RM169,888 for the 2.2-litre CRDi.

In terms of equipment, that money gets you an electronic 4WD, ESP, ABS and traction control for safety gear. Additionally, more toys with the wow factor include
– steering-mounted controls
– smart key system with keyless entry
– Nappa leather seats
– one-touch sunroof
– 7 seats

Both engines are paired with Hyundai’s in-house developed 6-speed automatic transmission, but on paper, it is the diesel motor that appears to be the far superior choice, with 442Nm on tap – more than enough to twist your mind, let alone the four wheels.

The new Santa Fe is available for booking now, and like all of its Hyundai stablemates, the Santa Fe is offered with a 5-year / 300,000km warranty.
