Lennart Stegland, MD of Volvo Car Malaysia & Akthar Sulaiman, Network & Product Director, with the V40 T5.

Volvo Car Malaysia has unveiled an updated V40 T5 hatchback with Inscription trim. The most noticeable enhancement is the Thor’s Hammer lights that brings the car up-to-date with the newer models in Volvo’s lineup, as well as the Inscription trim’s grille mesh and new Volvo Iron Mark (badge).

Volvo V40 T5 Inscription Malaysia 2017The Volvo V40 was launched in late 2013 and its looks has stood the test of time; also standing firm is its price of RM 180,888 (on the road without insurance, after EEV incentives). This price comes with 5 years’ warranty and 5 years’ Volvo On Call service. A T4 variant is planned for a later release.

As mentioned, the V40 facelift comes with the Inscription trim, which is the highest trim available (the others being Kinetic and Momentum), and includes 17″ inch Sarpas silver diamond-cut alloy wheels and redesigned rear diffuser trim.

Inside, the center stack is now dressed in Milled Aluminum inlay instead of the previous Shimmer Graphite, and there’s a new Inscription scuff plate. The new Iron Mark is also found on the steering wheel, Sensus display and key fob.

Also included is the award-winning CleanZone air filtration system which removes pollutants and odors from the cabin, making the air inside the V40 cleaner than the air outside.

The V40 T5 received a powertrain update in 2016 to the Drive-E engine and 8-speed Aisin gearbox (with Geartronic and Sport Mode) and this pairing has remained. The 2-liter Drive-E engine has a maximum output of 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque, and is capable of a 0 – 100 km/h time of 6.3 seconds. Fuel consumption is rated at 6.1 liters per 100 km.

Also retained are the segment-leading safety features such as Blind Spot Information System, Cross Traffic Alert, Park Assist Pilot, regenerative braking, Ready Alert Brake, Fading Brake Support, electronic stability control with Advanced Stability Control and Dynamic Torque Vectoring, and City Safety which includes Front Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

The new Honda CR-V will be launched in early July, or at least that is what all the signs point to, but ahead of the launch, Honda organised what they call a ‘teaser drive’ to give us a taste of what is coming insofar as the 2017 CR-V is concerned.

Well, we know that the new CR-V in Thailand is available as a 7-seater, and there is also a diesel engine option, but for Malaysia, we will only get the 5-seater and the gasoline engine version, at least for now.

The teaser drive was a little different from what we are used to – traditionally, Honda Malaysia has taken us to Thailand to sample the new models, but this time, possibly due to the fact that our models are quite different in terms of specifications, it was decided to have it in a ‘secret’ location somewhere in Putrajaya.

New Honda CR-V Malaysia 2017 YSK_7093After a briefing session at a hotel, we were chauffeured to the secret location a short distance away – I half expected to be blindfolded, but no, that didn’t happen. What did happen is that there is an embargo on all interior pictures until the launch, so the only pictures you will get to see this time around are only the exterior shots.

The test drive format was – a short burst of acceleration driving both the new CR-V and the outgoing version to compare the power difference, a bit of a slalom to check out the improvements in the overall handling, and a test drive on a runway to check out Honda Sensing, a series of ground-breaking systems that will put the CR-V a few notches above the rest.

New Honda CR-V with the current model behind
New Honda CR-V with the current model behind

Let’s start with the mechanical differences first – the new CR-V looks very much like the outgoing model, but it is a completely new model, I am told. One of the easiest ways to check is to compare the wheelbases – the new one is 2,660mm long while the outgoing model is 2,620mm. Overall width is increased by 35mm to 1,855mm, and overall length is shorter by 6mm, at 4,584mm versus 4,590mm. Ground clearance for the new CR-V is at least 20mm higher.

We understand that there will be two engine options for the new CR-V – the current 2.0 litre SOHC, i-VTEC engine will be carried over to the base model. This engine develops 155 PS at 6,500 rpm, and 190Nm of torque at 4,300 rpm. The other engine will be a turbocharged 1.5 litre DOHC VTEC engine, which is shared with the current Honda Civic, but re-tuned for more power. Turbo-charging and direct injection make up the difference for the smaller capacity – the new turbocharged engine gets 193PS @ 5,600 rpm and develops maximum torque of 243 Nm @ 2,000 – 5,000 rpm. In comparison, the 2.4 litre engine in the outgoing CR-V develops 190 PS @ 7,000 rpm, and 222 Nm of torque peaking at 4,400 rpm.

Despite very similar horsepower figures, the 1.5 litre turbocharged engine will perform better, due to the fact that maximum torque is delivered from as low as 2,000 rpm, and is available in full all through the rev range to 4,000 rpm before it starts to taper off, whilst for the naturally-aspirated 2.4 litre engine, maximum torque is only available at 4,400 rpm, and anywhere below that rpm, the torque is lower.

Besides, in order to unleash all of the 190 PS in the 2.4 litre engine, one would have to have the engine screaming at 7,000 rpm, whereas in the 1.5 litre turbocharged engine, maximum power is unleashed at 5,600 rpm. We all know the Joe Average would hardly want to push his engine all the way to 7,000 rpm, and with all the ‘meat’ lower down in the rev range, the 1.5 litre turbo would provide better driveability.

New Honda CR-V going through a slalom test.

Both engine variants of the CR-V will be fitted with Constantly Variable Transmissions (CVT), and Honda’s version will have less of the ‘rubber band’ effect. Anyway, at the test drive session, we were given an opportunity to do a back to back acceleration run to compare the 1.5 litre turbocharged CR-V with the outgoing 2.4 litre CR-V – and the 1.5 litre turbocharged CR-V won every time. It is quicker off the mark, and builds speed faster. In the slalom test, I personally felt there wasn’t any difference – which means the new CR-V is just as good in handling as the old one. We did not really get a chance to go for a long road drive, so you will have to wait for our report on that later. However, all indications are that the new CR-V is better on account of it being more powerful.

With the two engine variants, there will be a few trim levels to suit various budgets, with the top-of-the-range model getting all the goodies, which includes Honda Sensing.

Honda Sensing has three features – Driver Cruising Aid, Side Collision Deterrence, and Frontal Collision Deterrence. The key components are a camera and radar system that works with the vehicle systems. For driver cruising aid, Honda Sensing offers two features – Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Low-Speed Follow (LSF). The two features allow a driver to cruise at a safe distance from the vehicle in front of him or her without having to apply brakes or accelerate. ACC maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front, and automatically applies the brakes should the vehicle in front slow down, braking down to a standstill if necessary. ACC works at between 30 km/h and 180 km/h. At speeds below 30 km/h, LSF takes over and does basically the same function. Whilst the ACC works on highway cruising, the LSF is an additional feature that drivers will find very useful in city traffic – with the new CR-V, driver fatigue will be minimised. According to Honda Sensing engineers who were on standby during our drive, other than the safety objectives, Honda also had the aim to increase driver comfort.

New Honda CR-V Undergoing Acceleration Test, Malaysia 2017 YSK_7035In the area of Side Collision Deterrence, three systems work together – Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) and Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS). LDW monitors vehicle lane position and alerts the driver if the vehicle strays out of line. LDW operates at speeds between 72 km/h and 180 km/h, on straight or curved roads. However, if a driver uses turn signals to indicate a lane change, LDW is deactivated. RDM alerts, applies brakes and assists the driver’s steering to prevent the vehicle driving off the road. When cameras detect the vehicle veering too close to the edge of the road, the steering vibrates to alert the driver. If the vehicle leaves a lane marked by a solid line, RDM provides brake assistance and assists steering to bring the vehicle back to the lane. Note though that this system is driver assist only. In LKAS, a camera reads lane markings and assists the driver’s steering to keep the vehicle within the lane, and works between 72 km/h and 180 km/h. Again, the Honda engineers emphasise that this system is for driver assist only.

Honda CR-V Front Wheels 2017 YSK_7095In the area of Frontal Collision Deterrence two systems, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) work in tandem. FCW detects vehicles in front of the driver utilising a camera and radar system. Visual and audible warnings are triggered if the system detects an imminent collision. If no action is taken, CMBS is activated – CMBS assists in applying brake force progressively when it senses an increasing risk of collision. Note again that these systems are for driver assist only.

The Honda engineers are careful to state that all the systems are for driver assist only – we had a lengthy question and answer session on the Honda Sensing systems – Honda says that the driver has priority over the vehicle control, and in any of the areas, the driver action will over-ride the system.

With Honda Sensing, the CR-V goes right to the top of the heap, insofar as latest features are concerned. Honda Sensing basically is a safety package, but in designing it, Honda has taken it a step further, including features that actually help to increase driver comfort and reduce road fatigue. By incorporating these features, Honda has also raised the bar for others to follow. The engine downsizing exercise is hailed as a positive step forward in terms of reducing the carbon footprint, but to the consumer, it also opens up new boundaries on performance and fuel economy – you can actually decide what you want through your driving style. I cannot wait to put the new CR-V through a more comprehensive test drive – Stay Tuned.

Taiwan Intersection - Motorbikes & Scooters BoxAnyone familiar with Taiwan will know that this country is packed with 2-wheeled vehicles – scooters, motorcycles and bicycles; there are so many scooters and motorcycles on the road that traffic light intersections have dedicated spaces for them. Thus it comes as no surprise that Taiwan is the place of innovation for these 2-wheeled mobiles.

Early last year, we had covered the Taiwan-based electric Gogoro Smartscooter and its innovative battery swap solution so you never have to wait for hours to get your scooter charged. The Gogoro is also no slouch, accelerating from 0 to 50 km/h in 4.2 seconds; the high-performance Gogoro S variant does it in 3.7 seconds, thanks to a more powerful 7.2 kW G1-S motor. Top speed however, is limited to 95 km/h for safety.

In 2016, electric scooter sales reached 20,000 units according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (up 98% year-on-year) and Gogoro’s estimated market share is about 65%. This is still a drop in the ocean of an estimated 13.7 million scooters on the island but the Taiwan government is attempting to increase the sales of electric scooters through incentives and subsidies in its bid to cut down noise and emissions pollution from petrol-powered vehicles.

Gogoro 2 Smartscooter 2017On sale in July 2017 is the Gogoro 2 and 2 Plus which sit on a longer wheelbase that results in a more stable ride, better rider comfort (it now fits a pillion comfortably) and bigger under-seat storage (for 2 helmets). It’s powered by an improved motor which still delivers the same power (6.4 kW) but is claimed to have smoother torque delivery. The wheels are also larger (14″ in front, 13″ in rear), with a synchronized braking system for better handling and stability. As a result, 0 – 50 km/h acceleration is a tad slower (4.3 seconds) than its predecessor. Top speed too seems to have been reduced to 90 km/h but riding range is now 110 km (from 100 km).

The most notable change however, is the price. While the first Gogoro sold for US$ 4,000, Gogoro 2 is expected to start from US$ 1,295 (with subsidies).

The Gogoro 2 Plus will come with an updated mobile app, better security features (fingerprint or PIN to start), customizable full-color LED display, LED halo position light, and numerous accessories for personalization. The Gogoro 2 has a mechanical main switch with magnet anti-theft cover, single color LCD display, mechanical switch start button and LED position light. The new Gogoro 2 is still powered by the same swappable dual battery pack and the company is planning to add 500 battery swap stations to the existing 350.

Outside of Taiwan, Gogoro scooters are available in Berlin and Paris as a ride-sharing service. Practical as it may be, when and if it will get here is a big question mark as Gogoro will need to work with the authorities to establish the infrastructure, which is costly. A big challenge of course is the lack of noise, which is sometimes necessary to make a scooter’s presence known to other bigger vehicles.

Some like it, and some have nothing good to say about it but the Perodua Myvi is undeniably one of the most practical and attractively packaged compact cars in the market. And rolling out the 1 millionth Myvi off the production line is testament to its popularity.

The Perodua Myvi was launched in 2005 and stayed as the top-seller in the country until the end of 2014; it still remains one of the bestsellers and is Perodua’s most-produced model.

“The Perodua Myvi has set a new standard for us in terms of products offerings as well as customer expectations and it is our benchmark for all our future models,” Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

Mr Masanori Takahashi placing the Perodua logo on the 1 millionth Myvi as Perodua Auto Corporation Sdn Bhd Vice President Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad (left) looks on.

Last weekend, Perodua held a special “line-off” ceremony at its manufacturing facility in Sungai Choh, Rawang officiated by Perodua Auto Corporation Sdn Bhd (PCSB) President, Mr Masanori Takahashi and PCSB Vice President, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

“Also, based on our internal calculations – all our models, the Myvi, Alza, Axia and Bezza retain their spot as the most preferred vehicles in their respective segments. We wish to thank all Malaysians for their support,” Aminar added.

Perodua sold 81,900 vehicles in the first 5 months of 2017 which represents a 5.9% year-on-year increase (from 77,300 units).

“We estimate that the total industry volume for the first 5 months of the year to be 233,700 units. Based on this number, our market share for the year so far is at 35%,” Aminar said.

Perodua Myvi 1,000,000 Unit Line-Off 2017“We are cautiously optimistic of achieving our 202,000 sales target for this year despite the continued tough and challenging market condition,” he added.

Although the company’s priority is still to fulfill local demand, Perodua has been exporting the Myvi since 2006 to countries like Mauritius, Brunei, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Fiji and Nepal. Further, the Myvi is also exported to Indonesia as the Daihatsu Sirion; its biggest foreign market with nearly 31,000 units sold since 2007. Total exports of the Myvi / Sirion since 2006 amounts to 35,400 units.
