Proton 3S Outlet, Pantai Bharu, Jalan Kapar, Klang, Malaysia, Official Opening 2018Pantai Bharu Corporation Sdn Bhd (Pantai Bharu), a long-time Proton dealer, has officially opened a brand new Proton 3S centre with the brand’s new look. Pantai Bharu previously operated its Proton business as a 1S and 2S on separate premises but has combined it into one following Proton’s call to its dealers to upgrade and improve, since early this year.

Located at Lot 17870, Jalan Kapar, Sungai Pinang, 41400 Klang, Selangor, the Pantai Bharu Proton 3S Centre that has a spacious showroom and customer lounge with a children’s area, phone/laptop charging area, and complimentary WiFi; the delivery bay can cater to 3 vehicles. The servicing area has 12 service bays and 8 hoists. Furthermore, there are 70 customer parking bays available at this facility.

Proton 3S, Pantai Bharu Corporation, Customer lounge area - Jalan Kapar, Klang 2018“In order to succeed, we need to move with times and stay relevant. The market is fluid, what works today may not work tomorrow. So the intention to relocate to a new area to provide better customer experience is inevitable. The new area will provide convenience to customers as a one-stop centre for sales, service and spare parts,” said Dato’ Shamshudin Nor, owner and shareholder of Pantai Bharu, who has been heading the business for 32 years.

“We are positive that with the new and fresh looking facade, better lighting and ambience for interior and exterior, we will be able to attract more customers to our showroom, hence this will definitely push our sales and service level upwards. We foresee a 100% increase in sales and service throughput with the inception of this outlet upgrade,” he said further.

Officiating the outlet opening was Dr Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton, Dato’ Razaif Mohamed, Deputy CEO, Abdul Rashid Musa, VP of Sales and Marketing, accompanied by other senior management of Proton.

Proton 3S Outlet Official Opening, Pantai Bharu Corporation, Jalan Kapar, Klang“With outlet upgrading on track, coupled with improvement in sales and quality month by month, we are confident that Proton is gaining traction in the market. Alongside the development of our cars, from the affordable and stable Saga, the practical and refined handling of the Persona, the fantastic safety and technology of the Iriz, to the extra comfortable and spacious Exora, and extra versatility and fuel efficiency of the Ertiga, we always ensure that we remember to put great customer experience in the equation. Hence the outlet upgrades with improved facilities and services featuring fresh and new look is a starting point for Proton to win back the hearts and minds of our customers. We know, good quality products allow us to sell more cars, but great service goes a long way to retain and grow our customer base. And this is what Proton is striving to achieve,” said Dr Li.

Proton Quality Initiatives SlideEditor’s note: It isn’t difficult to answer why Proton lost market share and customer confidence in the last decade and a half (at least). What is difficult is climbing back to its previous stature as the main national car brand. So while it seems that Proton has its head in the right place, the proof of the pudding is always in the eating. The company will be banking on its planned dealership upgrades (which is ahead of schedule currently) and the upcoming new SUV to propel the brand forward and put it in better standing, and the onus is on the management and stakeholders’ shoulders.

Proton has reported a 50% growth in sales over the previous month, thanks in large part to the tax holiday as well as the Hari Raya promotions. It sold 6,173 cars in June 2018. With that, Proton’s market share last month is estimated to be 10% of TIV (Total Industry Volume), a slight increase from 9.5% in the previous month.

The brand’s main sellers are the Saga and Persona sedans; over 3,000 units of Saga were sold, mainly due to the promotion. Contributing to sales and brand image also is the improved product quality for all Proton cars subsequent to the implementation of the Global Customer Product Audit (GCPA) system which has seen a big reduction in production line demerit points for all cars.

“PROTON had its best sales month for 2018 in June, proving that Malaysians continue to find the current range of Proton cars attractive thanks to the range of features that have been engineered into each model. The attractive promotional offers we had, zero-rated GST price and an overall improvement in the quality of our cars helped to boost sales, which we are hopeful of carrying over for the remainder of 2018,” said Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer of PROTON Edar.

In 2017, Proton received a score of 755 in the J.D. Power Customer Service Index (CSI). The company then embarked on a quality improvement initiative to perform better in 2018. The CSI score is measured by examining dealership performance in five areas (in order of importance) i.e. service quality (32%); service initiation (22%); vehicle pick-up (18%); service advisor (15%); and service facility (13%) and to improve its score, PROTON has initiated activities to boost scores in each area.

Initial scores from Proton’s own stringent internal audit system are already showing an improvement in CSI scores. Through the GCPA system implementation, the quality of the Proton cars has improved 3 times in the past 8 months, measured by the Volvo quality standards. Combined, both activities the CSI initiatives and the product audit exercise, these will see an improvement in the overall experience customers have with the brand.

As an aside, Proton is contributing RM10 for each car sold between 1 June to 31 December 2018 to Tabung Harapan Malaysia. It had contributed RM61,730 from the June sales to the fund, and expect to contribute more when sales is expected to pick up upon the launch of its first SUV later in the year.

The Geely-Boyue-based SUV, which has not been officially named, was recently previewed by Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir who was impressed with the quality. “We are happy that the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, approves of our efforts with Geely. This confirms that Proton are on the right track and now that pre-production of the SUV has commenced we will soon begin our media and customer previews to build momentum ahead of the actual launch,” said Rashid.

L-R: Petronas Lubricants International Group CEO, Giuseppe D’Arrigo; Petronas Trackside Fluid Engineers, Ahmad Nasri Mohd Shafie and Salvatore Schembri; Team Principal & CEO of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, Toto Wolff.

As far as recent memory goes, I doubt we have ever posted such an article in Autoworld.com.my, but we’re doing it anyway despite no payment from Petronas for this; there’s a first time for everything. Petronas subsidiary, Petronas Lubricants International (PLI), is looking for a Trackside Fluid Engineer whose job will be to provide on-site technical support to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Formula One team, on the performance of its Petronas Fluid Technology Solutions™.

If you meet the following requirements and have a passion for motorsports (and fluids – the undrinkable kind), then this is your chance to play with the big boys. The criteria for application are:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Chemical or Automotive Engineering (or equivalent), Chemistry, Physics or documented related experience.
  • At least 2 years’ working experience in a related field.
  • General knowledge of analytical chemical techniques and instruments.
  • General understanding of lubricants (engine and gearbox) and fuel technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability and drive to quickly learn new skills on the job
  • Strong communication skills and positive attitude to respond to the team’s requirements and priorities;
  • Motivation and passion to promote PETRONAS and the F1 team to guests and partners;
  • Proficiency in English

“We are very pleased to announce the first global search for a new PETRONAS Trackside Fluid Engineer to join us and be mentored by the incumbent engineers to ultimately lead our trackside service activities for Formula One,” said PLI Group Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe D’Arrigo.

PLI relies on the collective knowledge of its technology team, including the crew serving the trackside needs of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, and Formula One is a key element in developing and proving product concepts to pave the way for future fluid technologies.

“It is a rare and exciting opportunity to be part of the team that works on the sharp end of fluid technology development for the fastest and most powerful drivetrains in the world. Some might even consider it the coolest job in the world,” he said.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, Petronas Livery - CopyPetronas has deployed engineers to the team since the start of the partnership with Mercedes F1 in 2010. The engineers operate in a compact lab for fluid-related service activities at Formula One tests and race events around the globe and provide real-time analysis on Petronas Fluid Technology Solutions™, a customised suite of products and services which includes Petronas Primax Fuel, Syntium Lubricant and Petronas Tutela Functional Fluids for the Mercedes works team and Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) customer teams as well.

“Petronas has been integral to the team’s success and our partnership played a fundamental role in the four consecutive world championship titles we have won together so far,” added Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport.

“Their technical expertise when it comes to modern Formula One power units has been of great value to the team, and we have enjoyed a competitive edge from their fuels and lubricants. Having experts in fluid engineering as part of the team in a dedicated trackside fuel lab has given us an advantage, as it means that we can run many of the tests required at the track. We know that our employees are the key to our success and are very excited about PLI’s initiative to scout and nurture new talent to support us trackside.”

The global search for the next Trackside Fluid Engineer is open until 7 October 2018.

Petaling Jaya, 5 July 2018 – Even before the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and Road Transport Department (RTD / JPJ) came into the picture, Honda Malaysia has been emphasizing the importance of replacing the affected Takata airbag inflators. Now that the Minister of Transport has voiced his concern, Honda Malaysia has come out to say that it will be working closely with MOT and JPJ, and continue its ongoing effort to ensure that owners of affected vehicles are aware of the safety issue and make the necessary replacements.

Owners of affected Honda vehicles are encouraged to urgently replace their affected Takata front airbag inflators manufactured by Takata Corporation as it may deploy with excessive internal pressure when activated. The airbag inflator casing might rupture which may result in injury or fatality of the driver and passenger.

The replacement of the airbag inflators is done FREE OF CHARGE meaning Honda owners need not pay for it. Any cost related to the replacement will be borne by Honda Malaysia. The company has 100% stock availability for the driver and passenger front airbag inflators.

Vehicle owners can check their vehicles’ product recall status as per below:
1. Visit Honda website at: www.honda.com.my or www.productrecall.honda.com.my
2. Call the Honda toll free number at 1-800-88-2020
3. Visit any Honda authorized dealers

The replacement can be done at any of the 92 Honda authorized service dealers nationwide. Customers are highly recommended to fix an appointment with Honda authorized service centres to enable priority for replacement activities and avoid delays or setbacks in replacing the Takata airbag inflators.

In addition, Honda Malaysia has made arrangements to have Mobile Hubs in selected shopping malls to make it easier for owners to do the replacement. There are also similar Hubs at Honda roadshows as well as at selected Petronas stations. Replacement activities at the Mobile Hubs in selected shopping malls and selected PETRONAS station hubs DO NOT require advance appointment as walk-ins are welcome at these locations.

Honda Malaysia also has Mobile Teams from Honda authorized dealers who will be operating in selected areas. The associates in the Mobile Teams will be in Honda uniforms and have with them an authorization letter for customers’ convenience in recognizing the team. You can request to view their Honda Identification Tag or contact the Honda Toll Free number 1-800-88-2020 for further confirmation when approached by the Mobile Team. The door-to-door Mobile Teams will also make arrangements for replacement activities on-site where necessary for customers who are genuinely unable to go to any nearest dealers or the replacement hubs.

Servicing for Parallel Imported Honda Vehicles
Honda Malaysia also extends the replacement of Takata airbag inflators to parallel imported (recon) Honda vehicles, which were not sold by Honda Malaysia. Owners of parallel imported Honda vehicles are advised to contact Honda authorized dealers to check on the status of their vehicles and if affected, to make arrangements to replace their airbag inflator as soon as possible. Cost of parts and labour for the airbag inflator replacement will be borne by Honda Malaysia and is free of charge to the owners.

Honda Malaysia continues to appeal to owners of Honda vehicles affected by the Takata front airbag inflator product recall to get their vehicles repaired at Honda authorized dealers as soon as possible. The company also urges all Honda vehicle owners to register their vehicles at the nearest dealers so that any necessary information sent out can reach the owners adequately.

As at July 2, 2018, Honda Malaysia has completed more than 228,000 units of Takata driver front airbag inflator which translates to 87% completion ratio. The total number of Takata driver and passenger front airbag inflator replacements completed is at more than 465,000 units or 79% completion ratio.

Honda Malaysia also takes this opportunity to assure that the current line-up of vehicles sold do not have the same type of Takata airbag inflators.
