16 August 2018 – The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is well-known as a leading producer of tyres. This global icon from America was founded in 1898 and is celebrating its 120th birthday this year. And while it has produced many breakthrough achievements and products over the years, Goodyear continues to innovate to help advance the next revolution in mobility.

From the racetracks to the surface of the moon, Goodyear’s products are found in a multitude of exciting and compelling human achievements.

“Few companies have left tracks intertwined so closely with key milestones in human history as The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Founded at the dawn of the motor age, Goodyear took to the skies and eventually traveled to the moon. We are always at the forefront of innovation, dedicated to offering our customers and clients the Freedom to Move through superior products and services.” said Ryan Patterson, President, Goodyear Asia Pacific.

“With 120 years of achievements, we have generations of momentum propelling us forward to continue innovating in the decades to come,” Patterson continued. “We’re celebrating our legacy of innovation at a time when the industry is evolving faster than any time since the invention of the automobile.”

Goodyear’s heritage:

In 1839, Charles Goodyear discovered a revolutionary invention that changed people’s everyday lives – the vulcanization of rubber. His namesake company has claimed many firsts, including tires on the first mass-produced car of the Ford Model T (1908); first pneumatic aviation tires (1909); first tires on the moon with NASA astronauts (1971).

After introducing the first aviation tires, Goodyear expanded to create fruitful and innovative products such as the first retreadable aircraft tires in 1927. By the 1980s, Goodyear launched the first FAA-approved radial tires for commercial aircraft.

Throughout its history, Goodyear has been dominating across the entire spectrum of motorsports. In 1998, Goodyear won its 368th Formula 1 Grand Prix race, the most of any other tire manufacturer. For more than 60 years, Goodyear has been a fixture in NASCAR racing and is currently the exclusive tire supplier to the circuit’s top three series.

Goodyear’s breakthroughs today:

Soybean Oil-Based Rubber Compound – To further commit to its product responsibility and sustainability promise, Goodyear established its first commercial use of a new soybean oil-based rubber compound. Goodyear’s team of resourceful scientists and engineers discovered a tread compound using soybean oil, which is naturally derived, cost-effective, carbon-neutral and renewable. By employing soybean oil in tires, Goodyear found a new approach to keep the rubber compound pliable in changing temperatures, a key performance achievement in maintaining and enhancing the vehicle’s grip on the road surface. Furthermore, this also promotes the importance of safe-driving, as the advanced tires are specifically used during dry, wet and winter conditions.

Silica From Rice-Husk Ash – To highlight Goodyear’s commitment to the community, market place, and environment, Goodyear began using silica derived from rice husk ash to enhance traction and treadwear in selected consumer tires. Rice husk ash is an environmental-friendly and cost-effective alternative to the chemical compound.

Sensors in Tires – Technology is becoming essential in our daily lives and Goodyear has innovated their products to meet the standards of today’s industry trends. Goodyear’s latest creation of sensor-equipped intelligent tires can continuously measure and record vital data that allows fleet operators to manage tire services. Real-time data is displayed into Goodyear’s proprietary algorithm, which enables fleet managers to monitor tire wear, temperature and pressure in real time. In 2018, Goodyear’s prototype was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

Goodyear’s role in a New World of Mobility:

Intelligent tires – With the fast growth of artificial intelligence in today’s auto industry, cars are the third fastest growing device after phones and tablets. Goodyear’s focus is on securing its tires as intelligent as the vehicles, especially as consumers demand a 360-degree experience with higher levels of autonomy. Goodyear’s prototype was demonstrated at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

Ride- and car-sharing – To ensure consumers’ rides are safe, comfortable and reliable as possible, Goodyear is focusing on improving the solutions for the ride- and car-sharing. Recently, Goodyear has worked with startup companies, such as Stratim and Tesloop in this area.

Concepts for the future of mobility – The future holds a prosperous plan for Goodyear as they continue to aim to flourish towards a more urban and sustainable environment. Recent examples are revolutionary concepts, such as the Eagle 360 Urban and Oxygene, a concept that Goodyear has presented to inspire the lives of people in the future.

The Eagle-360, Eagle-360 Urban and IntelliGrip Urban – As artificial intelligence has been progressing over the years, Goodyear’s Eagle-360 concept tire is designed to enable the future of mobility, and was officially unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The Eagle-360, a spherical-shaped design concept tire, was designed with key features of manoeuverability, connectivity and biomimicry for autonomous mobility that allows the car to move in all directions. This contributes to the safety for passengers, as well as coping with space limitations such as tight parking lots or city streets.

Goodyear’s new concepts – the spherical-shaped Eagle 360 Urban and the IntelliGrip Urban smart tire – apply emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) connectivity to help the autonomous vehicles of the future navigate the millions of possible unknowns we face in every day driving scenarios.

BMW Malaysia has launched the new BMW i8 Coupé, with a retail price of RM1,310,800 (on-the-road before insurance and sales tax in Pen. Malaysia). The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid using BMW’s 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder engine at the rear axle and an electric motor on the front axle; this drivetrain has won its fourth consecutive International Engine of the Year Award since 2015.

The turbocharged three-cylinder combustion engine has direct injection and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and produces a maximum output of 231 hp and 320 Nm of torque; the engine is also equipped with a particulate filter as standard that effectively absorbs all the particulate matter contained in the exhaust gases.

BMW i8 Coupe, Wheel, Malaysia 2018The combined output produced by the electric motor and engine acting in unison has increased to 374 hp. The engine’s power is channeled to the rear wheels through a six-speed Steptronic transmission, while the electric motor drives the front wheels via a two-speed automatic gearbox. Official 0 – 100 km/h time is 4.4 seconds, while fuel consumption is rated at 1.8 l/100 km, and electric power consumption, 14.0 kWh/100 km. Further, petrol CO2 emissions is 42 g/km. The car runs on 20″ BMW i light-alloy wheels in radial-spoke style and 516 jet black paint.

Mr. Raymond Tan, Head of Sales of BMW Malaysia said, “In 2014, BMW redefined the concept of a supercar with the BMW i8. In its looks and appeal, the sports car arrived from the future but more than this, the BMW i8 told a bold and ambitious story of the BMW Group in shaping the future of the automotive industry with Electro Mobility.”

The BMW i8 Coupé is features a brand new LifeDrive vehicle architecture which will represent all future BMW i models. It has a horizontally split structure comprising an aluminium chassis at the bottom and a CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) passenger cell on top to offer an exceptional degree of design freedom, dynamism and efficiency. All the suspension and drive components sit within the chassis.

BMW i8 Coupe Launch, Malaysia 2018The i8 Coupé is a 2+2-seater designed with a streamlined sports-car look with an emphasis on efficiency –  with a flat bonnet, sealed underbody, short overhangs, long wheelbase, large track width and elongated roofline; accentuated by a pair of scissor doors that open forward and upward. Aerodynamic elements include an air flap control system, air curtains in the front apron, contoured side skirts, “Stream Flow” lines on the car’s flanks, and air ducts between the rear lights and roof frame. The flow of cooling air at the front has now been reroutedto exit at the sides of the car near the wheel arches and into the underbody.

Located centrally in the car’s underbody to effect a low centre of gravity is the high-voltage battery which now has an increased cell capacity of 33 Ah from the previous 20 Ah. The electric motor output has also increased by 9 kW to 105 kW, and the electric range now extends to 55 kilometres.

The number of driving situations where it’s electric power only has been significantly increased. In contrast, the combustion engine is only brought into play when accelerating hard and is switched off again far more frequently with a measured driving style.

BMW i8 Coupe, Centre Console, Gear Selector Lever, Malaysia Launch 2018In the electric-only eDrive Mode, acceleration and deceleration can be smoothly executed with the gas pedal only. If the driver takes the foot off the gas pedal, the electric motor assumes the function of a generator that converts the car’s kinetic energy and feeds it back into the high-voltage lithium-ion battery. This process of regenerating brake energy creates braking momentum that effectively slows down the vehicle.

In hybrid mode, the electric motor provides a power boost to assist the engine when vigorous acceleration is required. The electric motor is also able to recuperate energy and feed it to the high-voltage battery on the overrun and under braking. The petrol engine’s high-voltage starter-generator can similarly generate additional reserves of electricity, thereby ensuring that sufficient energy is on tap at all times for the electric drive system in the new BMW i8 Coupé.

The intelligent energy management is proactive in optimising efficiency. When the navigation system’s route guidance function is activated, the energy management ensures the electric motor is employed as extensively and as wisely as possible for optimal efficiency. The system analyses the route in full and prompts the powertrain management to run on purely electric power, particularly over low-speed sections of the journey.

BMW i8 Coupe, Digital Display, Malaysia Launch 2018The i8 cockpit is fitted with the BMW Head-up Display that changes to a sports display that includes revs, gears and shift lights when performing manual gear changes in SPORT mode. The Navigation System Professional features the most up-to-date user interface, including a modern tile display with live mode. It is controlled using the iDrive operating system, comprising both a Touch Controller on the centre console and an 8.8″ freestanding Control Display screen.

The interior is trimmed with open-pored CFRP Carbon trim on the centre console, door handle and dashboard inlay; the iDrive Controller and gear selection lever has a ceramic finish.

The BMW Connected links the BMW i8 Coupé with its owner’s digital life, aided by the Remote App – which allows them to check and control their vehicles, and to stay extra-efficient even when they are on the go. BMW Connected offers a range of conveniences, including showing the current charge status, the range and departure time to ensure the vehicle is charged for the next trip, helping the driver search for charging stations and have the location sent directly to the vehicle for them, as well as access to the efficiency rating of the last trip, tutorials for particularly efficient driving and the CO2 calculator. Remote functions such as Remote Door Lock & Unlock, Remote Light Flash and Remote Horn Blow can also be activated.

The BMW i8 Coupé’s exterior comes in Crystal White with a Frozen Grey highlight, or the new BMW Individual special paintwork Donington Grey, with the interior in Black Amido or Accaro respectively.

The car is now available at all authorised BMW i dealerships nationwide.

With the Balloon Financing Plan from BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia, you can own the BMW i8 Coupé with monthly instalment plans starting from RM15,088 (based on estimates of an 80% loan on five-year tenure).

The BMW i8 Coupé comes with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty with free scheduled service programme, two-year tyre warranty programme for run-flat tyre offering and services, BMW Roadside Assistance and Accident Hotline, BMW Group Loyalty+ Mobile App – BMW White Card, and BMW Service Online.

What’s This?

The current generation of BMW’s 5 Series mid-sized executive sedan is the seventh. Codenamed G30, BMW touts this as ‘The Business Athlete’, but is it lucky number seven for the German automaker and will it help bring the brand back to a dominant position in the premium market? The 5 Series reviewed here is the imported variant, the 530i with M Sport kit, that was launched in Malaysia before BMW Group Malaysia introduced the locally-assembled version. There isn’t much difference between the two except for the price BMW 530i M Sport, Front Wheel, Malaysia Test Drive 2018tag, and upgraded navigation and omission of adaptive cruise control in the local version.

There is also the 530e plug-in hybrid variant, launched early this year, that has more torque than the petrol-only variant, and is cheaper due to the tax incentives, but we are mindful that not everyone has embraced the electric mobility movement and prefer to stick with conventional drivetrains, price tag notwithstanding.

What About It?

BMW 530i M Sport, Adaptive LED Headlight, MalaysiaIt looks like BMW took the evolutionary route with the new G30 5 Series as, at a glance, its overall look is similar to its predecessor. If you’re a car nut or fan boy, you might be able to spot the differences such as the sleeker elongated shape of the Adaptive LED headlamps that join up with the wider and more angular front grille with active air vents, the less round LED halos, reprofiled bumpers, and cleaner bonnet lines. The tail lamps however, look identical in shape to the previous. But a non-car-nut can tell the new one by its wider and leaner profile.

And it looks wider than the previous because it is. It may not be obvious but it is also longer and taller. Another telltale sign to spot the new 5 Series is the air breather vents on the front fender that improve aerodynamics. But you will not spot the use of high-tensile steel and magnesium in the car’s construction that helps shave off about 100 kg while adding rigidity and strength.

What’s Inside?

With the 7 mm increase in wheelbase length to 2,975 mm, coupled with the increase of 37 mm in length, 8 mm in width and 17 mm in height, the G30 5 Series affords a more spacious interior for passengers as well as cargo (boot space has gone up by 10 litres to an oddly coincidental 530 litres).

And just like the exterior, the interior is also an evolutionary step. Although the design changes to the dashboard and its surroundings are quite extensive, everything still looks familiar. It’s like an update, but with a lower bling factor than some of its rivals. Yet I still find it undoubtedly stylish and functional. Maybe BMW has chosen this route because of it has a large following of buyers that want dignified rather than loud.

BMW 530i M Sport, Cockpit, MalaysiaResting atop the dashboard is the 10.25″ touchscreen that no longer hides under a cowl. It displays the essentials like media, navigation, vehicle information, driving data and even the weather, in tile form. The options in this display can be accessed via the iDrive controller dial, which also has handwriting recognition on its surface, or the buttons on the steering wheel (you can also use gesture or voice control if you so choose). Meanwhile, the metres are displayed on a 12.3″ digital screen in front of the driver and duplicates some of the displays from the touchscreen, such as navigation and fuel consumption, for better visibility. The metre themes change according to the selected drive mode but the car always starts in Comfort mode by default.

BMW 530i M Sport, BMW Display Key Fob, MalaysiaSpeaking of comfort, there’s more to it than a driving mode. Along with the car comes the BMW Display Key which is a rather large key fob with an LED display that shows you information like the status of the car’s locks and windows, and fuel range. In addition, the key fob has a car pre-conditioning setup which allows you to remotely set a departure time (and day) and the car will ventilate the cabin before your set-off time so you can feel comfortable upon entering. The pre-conditioning function can also be accessed from the iDrive controller in the car.

What we’re missing though is the in-car wireless charger that allows for the key fob to be charged while we’re driving; you’ll have to rely on the traditional charging method of sticking a micro USB into it. We also don’t get the self-park feature in the BMW Display Key but I don’t think these features are greatly missed just yet.

We do however, still get the Concierge Service feature and in-car SOS call function, like all new BMWs sold here. There is also a four-zone climate control to keep you happy, in case two zones don’t do it for you.

And just like the Business Athlete that it is, the leather seats feel comfortable and offer a good amount of support; like (dare I say) a really good athletic supporter. Except for the middle seat in the rear. That one is more suited as a last-resort seat, or for passengers you don’t like very much. And as much as I enjoyed the driver’s seat (especially with the extendable thigh support), I would have enjoyed it more if it had adjustable lumbar support.

What’s Underneath?

If you aren’t yet used to the use of small-volume four-cylinder engines turbocharged to compensate for the lack of displacement, or cylinders, then you’d better do so (unless you’re able to jump back in time). The 530i is no exception to this new trend to meet emissions and efficiency standards. Back in the day, an executive saloon like a 530i would get a 3.0L inline six engine, even as recently as the previous generation that had one with 268 hp and 310 Nm.

BMW 530i M Sport, 2.0 TwinPower Turbo Engine, MalaysiaComparatively, the new 530i gets a 2.0L TwinPower Turbo that has an output of 252 hp and 350 Nm. A little short on horsepower but it has more pulling power. It’s hard to replace what’s displaced but the new engine is more efficient (average fuel consumption of 5.5 litres per 100 km), and in a market like ours, it’s a savings on road tax too.

Officially, the 530i goes 0 – 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds; power is transferred to the rear wheels by an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

What’s It Like?

Although the size of the 5 Series has grown, it doesn’t feel too large except when you’re trying to get into a tight parking spot; for that you have the Park Assistant feature for hands-free parallel and perpendicular parking. On other occasions, the 530i feels agile and athletic. It’s not sports-car fast, but there is enough grunt from the turbocharged engine to make overtaking effortless, especially in Sport mode. More importantly, the driving feels almost effortless, helped by a suspension set-up that competently dampens but the most extreme road imperfections without making the car feel soul-less.

Additionally, the 530i includes features such as Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Approach Control Warning, Person Warning with City Brake (works between 10 – 60 km/h for pedestrians and up to 80 km/h for vehicles), Rear Cross Traffic Warning, and Rear Collision Prevention.

In addition to its Road Safety Campaign launched in late 2017, Perodua has kicked off the Perodua Zero Accident Campaign starting in Kulim, Kedah. The objective of this campaign is to help reduce road accidents and it starts with the car manufacturer’s 10,300 employees nationwide.

tamponamentoWith the Perodua Zero Accident Campaign, Perodua hopes to achieve a zero road accident rate involving its staff traveling to and from their respective workplaces, in addition to the zero industrial accident rate, by the year 2021 while performing their respective duties.

“This Perodua Zero Accident Campaign is our first nationwide initiative among our staff, involving our manufacturing, sales and after-sales network, to set an example by being good drivers,” Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

The Perodua Zero Accident Campaign is supported by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and Social Security Organisation (SOCSO), also known as PERKESO. Both organisations come under the Ministry of Human Resources.

“While reduction and even elimination of industry-related accidents has always been the core focus of our Occupational, Health and Safety rules, we are now expanding that focus to include travel outside our premises. We believe the cultivation of good driving habits begins at home and we want to inculcate as much education on safe and responsible driving into our staff so that they would be a good example to all,” Datuk (Dr) Aminar said.

The Perodua Zero Accident Campaign will roll out in stages nationwide starting from this week until the end of the year. Datuk (Dr) Aminar said that Perodua hopes to take learning points from this Perodua Zero Accident Campaign and integrate it into the larger five-year Perodua Road Safety Campaign.

Perodua Road Safety Campaign, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh, 2017The Perodua Road Safety Campaign aims to reduce road accidents by educating drivers of the need to understand and obey basic road rules and courtesies such as the importance of wearing seatbelts, why child car seats are essential, the significance of using directional indicators and why mobile devices are a driver’s worst enemy.

“We use education as the approach because we believe most Malaysian drivers are aware of the rules and courtesies but may not understand the reasons behind them. Education will certainly take longer but once they fully understand the reasons behind the rules, the impact will be stronger,” Datuk (Dr) Aminar said.

The Perodua Zero Accident Campaign was officiated by Datuk (Dr) Aminar and was witnessed by DOSH Kedah Director En Hairozie Asri, Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd Managing Director Dato’ Dr Zahari Husin and Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd President Datuk Ahmad Suhaimi Hashim, who is also Chairman of the Perodua Group Safety Committee.
