Michelin Malaysia has started the ‘Michelin Safe On The Road’ (MSOR) safety campaign giving it and road users sufficient time to learn about mobility safety before the peak travel period in June. Michelin, as the world’s leading tyre manufacturer, is committed to highlight the importance of tyre maintenance as a road safety practice.

Michelin Safe On The Road_Safety Campaign_Mobile Truck Roadshow_Muhammad Arya Subrata_MalaysiaThroughout the month of May, which coincides with the Ramadan period, Michelin will send its mobile truck roadshow and experts to various locations to reach out to vehicle owners. “Safety is synonymous with Michelin. This is an important aspect of our societal commitment, whether by providing tyres with uncompromising quality or relentlessly initiating road safety programmes. Malaysia recorded its highest number of road accidents ever last year and this urgently calls for greater road safety awareness. As the festive season approaches, the Michelin Truck will go from place to place to remind the public that tyres, being the first line of defense on the road, are key to ensuring their own safety during their journey,” said Michelin Malaysia’s Commercial Director for B2B, Muhammad Arya Subrata.

Michelin Safe On The Road_Safety Campaign_Michelin Tyres_MalaysiaFrom 3 – 29 May 2019, the MSOR Truck with its in-truck safety education, as well as Michelin tyre experts, will visit various locations to provide complimentary tyre checks for air pressure, tread wear, overall tyre condition, as well as share information on tyre care to vehicle owners. Some road accidents can be attributed to improper tyre care. Fuel consumption can also be severely affected by improperly inflated tyres, so those who care about how much money they can save on fuel should take heed.

Michelin Safe On The Road_Safety Campaign_Complimentary Tyre Check_MalaysiaThe Michelin roadshow will be at each venue from 11 am – 8 pm to help motorists evaluate the condition of their tyres and provide advice on how to prolong their tyres’ lifespan. Motorists who stop by the roadshow will also receive car service vouchers and a Petron card worth RM50 when they spend in a Michelin Expert Centre.

Last year, Michelin conducted over 1,100 tyre checks in more than 26 locations nationwide. This year, Michelin is working with longstanding partners, Petron and Tesco, as well as new partner Aeon Big, to reach out to more motorists across the country.

Michelin Safe On The Road_Road Safety Campaign_Free Tyre Check_Malaysia“We want to reach out to more local communities this year so the MSOR Truck will make pitstops at more locations in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor in addition to Perak, Penang and Johor Bahru. Increasing our touchpoints is instrumental to spreading greater awareness on tyre safety and improving our safety on the road,” Muhammad Arya added.

“For over 35 years, the GS and RT models have stood for premium riding enjoyment whether on an extended tour or a short weekend trip, propelling forward with high-powered adrenaline. The BMW Urban Mobility range, alternatively, was developed as a future-oriented mobility solution perfect for a metropolitan environment. With the introduction of these four new models, our expansive portfolio leaves no one behind as it fits the lifestyle needs of both the adventurous and the modern,” added Owen Riley, Head of BMW Motorrad Malaysia.

BMW C 400 X and BMW C 400 GT

BMW C 400 X & BMW C 400 GT_BMW Motorrad Malaysia_2019We start with the smallest ones launched – the BMW C 400. The BMW C 400 X is a mid-sized scooter that is designed to be light and manoeuvrable for the challenges of mobility in the city. The C 400 X also features the robust and reliable spirit of the bigger GS i.e. the upright proportions, the suggestion of a front mudguard, the clear graphic separation of the painted trim components and the large asymmetric LED headlight with the optional distinctive daytime running light design.

The C 400 X also has excellent wind and weather protection. The ingenious storage concept comprises two integrated storage compartments and the Flexcase under the comfortable, single-section seat for more convenience while on the road.

The new BMW C 400 X is available in metallic Zenith Blue and Black Storm, as well as non-metallic Alpine White. Retail price is RM44,500 (on the road, without insurance, and with BMW Motorrad Malaysia’s All-New 3-Year Warranty and 3-Year Roadside Assistance Programmes; applicable to all new motorcycles).

Meanwhile, the BMW C 400 GT was what established the maxi scooter segment. The Gran Turismo variant of the BMW C 400 X scooter is geared towards increased comfort and enhanced touring capability, making it suitable for a city commute or a weekend tour ride.

Also equipped with LED lighting technology, the new BMW C 400 GT can be identified by the aerodynamically-designed twin LED headlight. The ergonomic seat also guarantees a comfortable and confident seating position whether for the short jaunt or the longer road trip. The C 400 GT also features a separate rider backrest while both the rider’s and passenger’s feet rest on comfortable footboards integrated in the body. Wind and weather protection for the C 400 GT is enhanced with a higher windshield than the C 400 X for better practicality of touring.

Both these Urban Mobility models are powered by a single-cylinder 350 cc engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and pushing out 34 hp @ 7,500 rpm and 35 Nm @ 6,000 rpm. Standard features are vibration decoupling and Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Anti-slip Control, and twin front disc brakes and single rear disc brake with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).

The optional Connectivity system features a 6.5″ colour TFT instrument cluster. Together with the BMW Motorrad Multi-Controller, they allow the rider to conveniently access vehicle and connectivity functions. In addition to the convenience of phone and media functions, there is also arrow-based navigation available through the BMW Motorrad Connected App.

The new Urban Mobility scooters also features Keyless Ride where the steering lock, ignition, fuel-filler flap and anti-theft device are all activated by a transponder integrated in the vehicle key.

BMW R 1250 RT

The new R 1250 RT features an updated boxer engine with capacity increasing to 1254 cc (from 1,170 cc), offering more power – 136 hp and 143 Nm. There is also significantly optimised refinement and running smoothness especially within the lower engine speed range. The new engine also offers improved emission and fuel consumption levels.

BMW R 1250 RT 05_BMW Motorrad MalaysiaBMW ShiftCam Technology is used here for the first time in the serial production of BMW Motorrad engines. This enables variation of the valve timings and valve stroke on the intake side. Additionally, the intake camshafts are designed for asynchronous opening of the two intake valves, resulting in enhanced swirl of the fresh incoming mixture for more effective combustion. Other technical changes to the engine relate to the camshaft drive, now taken care of by a toothed chain (previously a roller chain), optimised oil supply, twin-jet injection valves and a new exhaust system.

For riding safety, there is Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Pro and Hill Start Control available as standard. Riding Modes Pro is a new feature that offer additional riding modes of Dynamic, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Hill Start Control Pro and Dynamic Brake Assistant (DBC). Hill Start Control Pro can be individualised in a way that the parking brake is automatically activated on an incline when the hand or foot brake lever has been activated, shortly after the motorcycle comes to a standstill.

A next-generation Dynamic Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) also allows for finely tuned adaptation of the motorcycle to different riding states, achieving optimum damping comfort and a stable ride response.

Different individualisation packages are also available for the R 1250 RT such as the Comfort package, Touring package, Dynamic package, and Lights package, each suited for the long journey, added riding pleasure, sporty adventures, or superior illumination.

The R 1250 RT comes in the Sport Style in dynamic Mars Red, Elegance Style in sleek Carbon Black and the classic Alpine White. It is priced at RM139,500.

Tan Chong Subaru Automotive Thailand_Tan Chong International Ltd_First Subaru Assembly Plant_ThailandTan Chong International Limited (TCIL) has officially unveiled its first Subaru assembly plant. Situated in the Lad Krabang Industrial Estate near Bangkok, this facility is Subaru’s first plant in Asia (outside of Japan); it has another plant in North America. The 100,000 square metre plant is established with an initial investment of THB5 billion.

The Lad Krabang plant – Tan Chong Subaru Automotive (Thailand) Limited (TCSAT), is a joint venture between Hong Kong-listed TCIL and Japan’s Subaru Corporation. TCIL, headquartered in Singapore, holds a 74.9% stake through its subsidiary, TC Manufacturing and Assembly (Thailand) Limited, while Subaru Corporation holds the remaining 25.1%. The decision was made to site it in Thailand due to Thailand’s status as an automotive hub, with the presence of numerous Japanese automakers, established component suppliers and strong localisation ability. Further, trade agreements in ASEAN, will allow the cars to be competitively built and exported to meet the region’s growing demand.

Currently, it is starting off with a production capacity of 6,000 units annually on a single shift, gradually increasing it in stages. The entire facility is future-proofed to cater to an annual production of 100,000 units.

The first model to be assembled in TCSAT is the fifth-generation Subaru Forester, for distribution to Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia by Motor Image Group, the wholly-owned subsidiary of TCIL. It has so far delivered about 100 vehicles to customers in Thailand. At the same time, Motor Image also reported record sales figures at the recent Bangkok International Motor Show, largely due to strong demand for the Subaru Forester.

Glenn Tan Tan Chong International“This is truly a milestone for us, to be able to build Subaru cars ourselves in Thailand. From distribution, dealerships and aftersales, we are now also manufacturing Subaru cars. This strategic long- term move will allow us to better manage our supply chain, widen our product line up, localise better and be less dependent on supply from Japan. We will be better able to respond and meet consumer demand for Subaru vehicles in the region, and perhaps even beyond the region in future,” said Mr Glenn Tan, Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of TCIL.

Tan Chong Subaru Automotive Thailand_TCSAT_Quality Control And Correction ProcessesTCSAT employs a team of Japanese to ensure that production standards and processes adhere to the same stringent levels followed by Subaru Corporation in Japan. The plant is semi-automated with high-performance robots at various stages of the assembly process to ensure superior quality and zero defects. The robots are responsible for about 21% of the welding, while sealer application for glass areas are also automated for better consistency. At the paint shop, the pre-treatment, electrical deposits, primer and top coat are applied automatically. This is part of the technology and skills knowledge transfer which Subaru Corporation has committed to.

Tan Chong Subaru Automotive Thailand_TCSAT_Wet Weather Test_ForesterSome of the unique features of the plant include a test track, specially built to assess the condition of every car before they leave the factory. A benefit to having an assembly plant in this region is that it can cater to local conditions such as the intensity of rainfall which affects weather sealing and NVH quality. Quality control and correction processes take place during and throughout the assembly process. Detailed spot checks are also done on random vehicles off the production line to ensure consistency. This is complemented by regular production audits by Subaru Corporation, with vehicles selected to be sent for quality and crash testing in Japan. The robust quality control procedures ensure that every car produced at TCSAT is safe, comfortable and reliable.

Besides staff from Japan, there are also staff from Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan to share their technical and management expertise. All management staff are trained by external consultants on local regulations and global practices. TCSAT also has a committee to oversee overall safety standards at the plant and identify and isolate potential risks to staff welfare and work environment. To further promote staff health and well-being, the canteen serves nutritious Thai and Japanese meals. Leisure areas, such as a futsal field, cater to staff recreation needs.

The fifth-generation Subaru Forester will be launched soon in Malaysia, and will be the first model in the country to feature Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist safety technology. The Forester was recipient of the Good Design Award by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion last year.
