Effective 1 July 2020, two UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) outlets in the Klang Valley have been transferred to Toyota dealers. The dealers i.e. Laser Motor PJ Sdn Bhd and Fokus Sentral Sdn Bhd have taken over the Section 19 PJ and Cheras outlet respectively. This move by UMWT is done to enhance its operational efficiency.

Toyota 2S Service Outlet_Laser Motor_Taman Petaling Utama_Malaysia_Vehicle ServicingThis follows the company’s earlier announcements in October 2017 and November 2018 that it would be transferring the majority of its branch retail operations to its dealers and other relevant parties. This strategy allows UMWT to further focus on high value-added upstream activities such as product development, marketing and dealer network support. Meanwhile, Toyota dealers will continue to dedicate themselves towards delivering customer satisfaction.

UMW Toyota Motor_President_Ravindran K“It is essential for UMWT to continue achieving high customer satisfaction standards,” said its President, Mr. Ravindran Kurusamy.

“I am extremely excited about working even more closely with our dealers to realise a shared vision for UMWT, which is to promise the concept of “Best In Town”, meaning more focused one to one customer engagement. Although this arrangement signifies an important change for UMWT, our customers should rest assured that our service will not be compromised, but get even better in the future” he added.

This strategy promises seamless support for UMWT’s significant customer base. It will also allow for the growth of entrepreneurship to create more value that benefits the local economy.

Montfort Boys Town_Technical Training_AutomotiveA bit of non-automotive news to start the week. Well, there is a slight connection to the automotive sector still but regardless, we think this is important enough to highlight for everyone to see. There is no doubt that the pandemic has affected us all. In particular, the B40 group is vulnerable to the economic impact of the pandemic. And Montfort Boys Town (MBT), an institution which helps to empower underprivileged youth by offering them technical training, is feeling the pinch. MBT is renowned as a technical institute working to help these youth for the past 61 years.

PrintDue to the economic slowdown, MBT is seeing worrying times as donors retract contributions. “We understand many companies are facing difficulties sustaining their businesses, as a result of the current economic situation. At the same time, sustaining MBT and its work relies on the support of the public and corporate partners through funding. The institution’s donations have reached its lowest level since the Movement Control Order started and we are concerned about the future of our students who rely on us for a chance to build a livelihood and a better future,” explained Montfort Boys Town Deputy Director, S. Arul.

Furthermore, MBT’s fundraising efforts through its annual Montfort Boys Town Open House Charity Carnival has been impacted by the pandemic. Other major events that were also postponed include this year’s graduation ceremony, final exams for the graduating batch of 2020 and student intakes for the year 2020.

Annually, MBT requires about RM8 million to sustain its overall operational expenses. This includes providing housing for approximately 350 students including meals, teaching and administration staff salaries, maintenance for its faculties and facilities, as well as upgrades for machinery which are central to the educational development of its students.

From the beginning of the MCO in March 2020, MBT had stepped up efforts to ensure the continuity of teaching and learning through online platforms such as video calls, Zoom sessions, Google Classroom, WhatsApp groups and emails. This shift in training also presented a challenge as not every MBT student is equipped with the facilities for online learning. The institution’s efforts are hindered as many of its students do not own a smart phone, and rely on devices shared with family members. Internet access is also limited.

“Teaching academically-challenged students is an art. Our teachers have been working tirelessly to support their online lessons by simplifying notes, preparing assignments, and simple quizzes. However, these are still inadequate for an effective and productive learning process, given the limited access our students have to proper facilities,” Arul explained.

As the students require different teaching approaches, MBT’s modules are crafted to help its students to thrive with the ‘teach and show’ method. For example, Bakery and Pastry students are given recipes to try at home and are tasked to post the pictures of their final products in the classroom’s WhatsApp group. The ‘teach and show’ method places greater emphasis on the practical approach to enhance a student’s theoretical understanding. However, it remains a challenge during the remote learning period as this was not possible for all subjects, especially those with heavy machinery involved such as the automotive courses.

In April 2020, Malaysia’s unemployment rate had increased to 5%, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia. The department also stated that the most affected employed persons were in the manufacturing and services sectors, mainly in accommodation and food and beverage; arts, entertainment and recreation and other services such as beauty centres and salons.

“Employment is another area that we foresee becoming a challenge for our students as employers may be more conservative about hiring amid operational cost tightening measures. We hope with the reactivation of business for more sectors and the resumption of inter-state travels during this recovery phase will help improve the outlook for employment among our graduates. We hope to be able to continue sowing the seeds of education among our young people with the help of our generous donors. We also pray that God will bring healing and rejuvenate everyone as we weather the challenging times together,” concluded Arul.

Technical and vocational training and education (TVET) continues to be an important source of highly skilled and future-ready workforce in Malaysia. According to the National Policy on Industry 4.0, the country requires more independent and highly skilled workers, who will increase the nation’s productivity.

Montfort Boys Town_Montfort Girls CentreSince its inception, MBT has impacted the lives of over 7,000 underprivileged youth in Malaysia. These youth have gone on to lead thriving careers as a result of their foundational years at the institute. MBT is also one of Malaysia’s pioneering NGOs that provides skills training and character formation for marginalised youth in Malaysia. In 2002, MBT opened its doors to female students which birthed the Montfort Girls Centre.

Those who wish to make donations to help with the continuation of the Montfort Boys Town and Montfort Girls Centre can visit the official website for details. You can also call 03 5519 1735 / 6, email boystown@montfort.org.my or visit the Facebook page.

Cash donations to MBT are entitled for tax exemption as defined under sub-section 44(6) of Income Tax Act 1967, Ruj: LHDN.01/35/51/179-6-0679, No. Warta Kerajaan: LN 106-1 October 1959.

The Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) has launched the MARii Simulation & Analysis Center (MARSAC). MARSAC is developed in collaboration with PROTON with the aim to accelerate high-value design, cost optimisation and talent development among automotive and mobility component manufacturers.

MARSAC is a standalone facility within MARii’s headquarters in Cyberjaya for use by manufacturers. It is equipped with 15 high performance workstations, powered by MARii’s High Performance Computing servers which enable real-time data analysis and cloud-based operations. This allows engineers to perform digital simulations and digital twinning during the validation phase of automotive and mobility-based parts, components, systems and processes. This is done to virtually simulate vehicle crashes, identify failure thresholds of components, tooling wear, fluid flow pattern in vehicles, engines or moulds, without the need to physically build a model.

MARii_Marsac Launch_CyberjayaDato’ Madani Sahari, MARii CEO said, “Computer Simulation is an important, but highly challenging phase in the automotive design process. It requires a tremendous amount of skill and experience, as well as investment on the part of the business owner to procure the required equipment and conduct meaningful analyses. MARSAC addresses this issue by providing a shared platform for automotive businesses to infuse computer simulation within their product development cycle”.

Dato’ Madani explained that the simulation and analysis centre also functions to develop an Industry 4.0-ready local talent pool in various high-level areas. With the launch of MARSAC, 10 component manufacturers will begin their collaborative design projects guided by experts from PROTON and MARii. MARii aims to allow the participation of 30 component manufacturers to be part of the MARSAC design community by 2022.

“There are currently about 641 parts and components manufacturers operating in Malaysia, with about a quarter of this need of localised design to ensure industry competitiveness. A one-stop centre that connects OEMS and their supply chain to collaboratively design innovative products would accelerate this learning curve, in line with the National Automotive Policy,” he added.

Car Body Assembly_Factory_Proton“This centre will act as a satellite laboratory for PROTON CAE whilst also serving as the CAE Centre for the industry in Malaysia. It is our shared vision that this centre will become a leading facility within the ASEAN region across all areas of the automotive industry including research, design & testing, validation as well as manufacturing,” said Dato’ Radzaif Mohamed, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.

“As we at PROTON celebrate the 35th year of the birth of the Saga, we are reminded of how far we have come, and how much further we must go. It is a responsibility that we do not take lightly and something that we intend to continue championing. Hence, we feel it is important to support institutions like MARii who are helping to chart the path forward for our industry,” he added.

The launch was held in conjunction with a working visit by Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, YB Datuk Lim Ban Hong. “This is my first visit to MARii, and I am pleased to see homegrown technology and capabilities operating closer to global best practices in product engineering and development. MARSAC, as well as other technologies developed in-house by MARii, are a testament to the Malaysian will in emerging as an advanced nation in the future”, the Deputy Minister said.

MARii_Marsac Launch_PROTONIn conjunction with the launch, a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed by both parties to signify the official commencement of MARSAC’s operations. During the working visit to MARii, the Deputy Minister was also shown a demonstration of MARii’s BDA platform, as well as MARii’s digital content development capabilities.

Zurich General Insurance Malaysia_PayQuik Kiosk_Motor Insurance_Road TaxZurich General Insurance Malaysia Berhad is collaborating with fintech company, Finology Sdn Bhd, and its affiliate partner PayLink Global (M) Sdn Bhd to provide road tax renewal services and motor insurance purchase. The insurance purchase and road tax renewal are available via PayLink’s Payquik network of kiosks. This form of service is said to be the first of its kind in Malaysia.

Via this strategic collaboration, vehicle owners in Malaysia will enjoy seamless convenience and access to purchase motor insurance and renew the road tax of their cars or motorcycles. There are about 250 Payquik kiosks nationwide, located primarily in the offices of utility companies, shopping malls and government buildings.

Zurich General Insurance Malaysia_CEO_Junior Cho“We are constantly seeking fresh solutions that would meet the market’s evolving needs. Modern lifestyles have fueled the growing demand for convenience and ease of purchasing goods and services. With economic activities start to resume, we understand the importance of road tax renewal, as well as motor insurance so Malaysians can commute to work with peace of mind as the renewal exemption period ends. This three-way collaboration with Finology and Payquik will provide wider access for drivers as well as riders to obtain the service and protection they need in a fast and easy manner,” commented Zurich General Insurance Chief Executive Officer, Junior Cho.

Moreover, it is estimated that over two million Malaysian road taxes remain expired as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) counters were not operational during the Movement Control Order period. This initiative by Zurich General Insurance is an effort to help address this, as well as Malaysia’s high number of uninsured vehicles on the road, which increases the risk for other motorists and insurers.

According to statistics from JPJ, there are about 29 million registered vehicles in Malaysia in 2018. Of this, only 19 million vehicles renew their road tax annually. About 95% of those with expired road tax are motorcycles.

Zurich General Insurance_Finology_PayLink_PayQuik Kiosk“One might ask why a service kiosk is necessary if people have the option of paying online now. The reality is that there are still customers who prefer to pay with cash or who do not own a credit card. This means that these people do not have sufficient access to the necessary financial services online. Enabling motor insurance purchasing and road tax renewal through kiosks is a great alternative to paying online or over the counter. Plus, these kiosks are available 24 hours, allowing customers to make purchase or renewal at their convenience,” said Jared Lim, Managing Director of Finology.

This latest collaboration is a joint effort to promote financial inclusion and offer Malaysians comprehensive coverage on the road. In 2019, Zurich and Finology had collaborated to offer customers end-to-end online insurance quotation and purchase services via Finology’s platform loanstreet.com.my.

BMW Motorrad Malaysia has launched the all-new BMW S 1000 XR motorcycle. This premium bike in the Adventure Sports motorcycle segment has a retail price of RM121,500 (on the road without insurance), and comes in two colours i.e. Ice Grey and Racing Red.
