Families at Volvo CarsBeginning 1 April 2021. Volvo Cars will give all its 40,000+ employees around the world, in all plants and offices, 24 weeks of paid parental leave. This ‘Family Bond’ policy will give all employees who have served at least one year’s service a total of 24 weeks of leave at 80% of their base pay by default. The policy applies to either parent, so even the fathers are not forgotten or left out. The leave can be taken at any time within the three first years of parenthood.

Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars chief executive“We want to create a culture that supports equal parenting for all genders,” said Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive. “When parents are supported to balance the demands of work and family, it helps to close the gender gap and allows everyone to excel in their careers. We have always been a family-oriented and human-centric company. Through this parental leave policy, we are demonstrating and living our values, which in turn will strengthen our brand.”

“This is a big step for Volvo, in which we are happy to extend the benefits of Family Bond onto our colleagues here in Malaysia. It is indeed empowering to be part of such a progressive-thinking organisation, to deepen our endeavours for competitive employee benefits amidst our positive culture,” said Akhtar Sulaiman, Marketing and Public Relations Director of Volvo Car Malaysia.

Children and Volvo Cars Safety SeatsThis global policy is more inclusive and supportive than many existing policies around the world, and includes all legally registered parents, including adoptive, foster care and surrogate parents. Some countries do not offer any paid leave to new parents, or exclude certain groups of parents – the latter is particularly true for fathers. However, if local regulations in a particular market offer a more generous parental leave, then the local regulations will take precedence.

Volvo Cars’ global policy is inspired by national legislation in its home market of Sweden, famous around the globe for its generous parental leave arrangements, which have delivered tangible benefits for parents and children alike in recent decades. It follows a parental leave pilot scheme launched in the EMEA region in 2019, in which 46% of all applicants were fathers.

Hanna Fager, Global Head of Corporate Functions“This is more than a new parental leave policy for our employees – it is the embodiment of our company culture and values,” said Hanna Fager, head of corporate functions and HR. “We want to lead change in this industry and set a new global people standard. By opting all our employees into paid parental leave we narrow the gender gap and get a more diverse workforce, boosting performance and strengthening our business.”

When studying the outcome of its parental leave pilot, the company found that employees appreciated the policy for being gender neutral, inclusive and adaptable to personal needs. The studies also resulted in important insights on how to encourage even more employees to take parental leave and make parental leave for both parents the new ‘norm’.

Rema Chetty, Head of People Experience in Volvo Car Malaysia added: “At Volvo, our focus has always been on people. Family Bond by Volvo Cars is more than a new policy or benefit for employees – it is the embodiment of the company’s culture and values. We believe that collaborative, inclusive, and diverse work environment ensures a happy workplace and in turn a successful organisation. We hope with the introduction of this parental leave policy, we can liberate our people to focus the joys of parenthood and be assured of continuous support from the company for their careers.”

Some of the obstacles that limit the uptake of parental leave include parents’ concerns around the potential impact it might have on their team, fear around long-term career opportunities, and a cultural mindset about of what is expected of fathers in the workplace and at home.

Families at Volvo CarsTo encourage uptake, Volvo Cars has focused on communicating about its parental leave policy more effectively. By presenting the 24 weeks parental leave as a pre-selected option, the company aims to create a ‘default effect’ – essentially, people are highly likely to stick with pre-selected options. Ambiguous language, such as ‘up to 24 weeks’, is avoided as we tend to predict negative outcomes when there is uncertainty. By using tactics like these, Volvo Cars aim to remove confusion and cultural barriers, and provide parents with certainty.

To further show its commitment to reducing the gender gap, Volvo Cars will share its participation results over time so that other companies can learn from its progress.

The new Kia EV6 just made its world premiere earlier. And with its introduction comes Kia’s promise of long-range, zero-emissions power, 800V ultra-fast charging and distinctive styling to the crossover SUV market. The Kia EV6 is the brand’s first car to be based on the company’s new platform dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEV).

This is the first BEV crossover launched under the new Kia design philosophy, ‘Opposites United’. It showcases a future-oriented EV design characterised with high-tech details. Powered exclusively by electric energy, the EV6 comes with a choice of multiple long-range, zero-emission powertrain configurations. The 800V charging capability means the EV6 can go from 10% to 80% battery charge in just 18 minutes. Moreover, the more exciting GT version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 260 km/h to offer a more exhilarating drive.

The EV6 is built on the all-new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and forms the first part of Kia’s transition to the new era of electrification under the new brand slogan, ‘Movement that inspires’. It also begins the mid-to-long term strategy for BEVs, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid electric (HEV) vehicles to make up 40% of Kia’s total sales by 2030, with an annual sales target of 1.6 million units for these eco-friendly models.

As part of this objective, Kia aims to grow its BEV sales to 880,000 units in 2030 and become a top global seller. The EV6 represents the first of 11 new BEV models from Kia by 2026. Seven will be built on E-GMP architecture, and four derivative EVs will be based on existing models.

Kia EV6 GT_Rear“EV6 is the embodiment of the new Kia. It is born to inspire every journey, through bold design, progressive engineering, innovative technologies, and exciting electric performance,” Ho Sung Song, Kia’s President & CEO said. “EV6 also represents the beginning of Kia’s long-term commitment to sustainable mobility, accelerating the transition not only to clean transportation, but also products, materials and manufacturing.”

The EV6 will be produced in South Korea and will go on sale in selected global markets from the second half of 2021. Kia will be taking preorders beginning from 30 March in some markets.

Designed to deliver something different in the crossover class, the GT version of the Kia EV6 offers a distinctive, impactful exterior with high-tech features, as well as unprecedented levels of performance from a Kia electric vehicle.

Kia EV6 GT-line_Digital Tiger Face_HeadlightsAt the front, Kia’s ‘tiger face’ has been re-interpreted for the digital era. Forming part of this ‘Digital Tiger Face’, daytime running lights display a sleek, modern appearance and include a ‘sequential’ dynamic light pattern. Below this, a low air intake visually widens the front of the car, accentuating its high-tech image. Meanwhile, the side profile displays a crossover-inspired silhouette, which is modern, sleek and aerodynamic. A character line runs along the bottom of the doors, curving upwards towards the rear wheel arches to visually elongate the profile of the car.

Designed in part to realize ultimate aerodynamic performance, the rear displays a sloping C-pillar with an integrated black glossy insert which appears to extend the window glass. Above this sits a prominent wing-type roof spoiler that channels air downwards towards a raised lower spoiler, which sits atop the car’s unique rear light cluster.

Karim Habib, Senior Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center, elaborated: “EV6, as the first dedicated Kia EV, is a showcase of human-centred, progressive design and electrified power. We strongly believe EV6 is a compelling and relevant model for the new EV era. With EV6 we aimed to create a distinctive, impactful design by using a combination of sophisticated, high-tech features on pure and rich volumes while providing a unique space as a futuristic EV.”

The interior design also benefits greatly from the application of Kia’s dedicated E-GMP platform. Despite the EV6’s compact exterior dimensions, its 2,900 mm wheelbase results in a cabin space similar to many mid-size SUVs.

Kia EV6 GT-line_Interior_Cockpit_Steering_Curved Infotainment Screen“People are first attracted by the exterior of cars, but they eventually fall in love with the interior – where they spend most of their time. So, designing an inspiring space for the EV6 was the most important thing for us. We believe EV6 can inspire customers by boosting their creativity,” commented Jochen Paesen, Vice President for Interior Design.

One of the most striking elements is a seamless high-tech curved infotainment screen. The simple form language of the wide screen and dashboard give the interior an open feel. Relaxation seats are slim, lightweight and contemporary, and clad in modern, visually interesting and robust fabrics created using recycled plastics – equivalent to 111 plastic water bottles.

Further, the EV6 offers intelligent and flexible interior packaging and an abundance of cabin storage areas, including 520 liters (VDA) of trunk space with the second row seats in place. When the second row seats are folded down, stowage capacity increases to approximately 1,300 liters. The car also features a front trunk which provides up to an additional 52 liters of stowage space for 2WD models and 20 liters for AWD models.

Kia EV6 GT-line_RearThe Kia EV6 will offer several choices of fully-electric, zero-emission powertrain configurations including long-range (77.4 kWh) and standard-range (58.0 kWh) high-voltage battery packs. The Kia EV6 GT-line is available with both long-range and standard-range battery packs, while the EV6 GT features the long-range battery pack only. This is Kia’s first electric vehicle to be available with two-wheel (2WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) options – the latter offering enhanced dynamic capability in even the most challenging conditions.

The 2WD long-range 77.4 kWh EV6 can travel over 510 kilometers on a single charge, based on the WLTP combined cycle. With a maximum 605 Nm torque available on the AWD version, the EV6 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds. The 77.4 kWh battery pack is paired with a 168 kW (229 PS) electric motor powering the rear wheels, while for AWD models, a 239 kW (325 PS) electric motor powers the front and rear wheels.

Meanwhile, the standard-range 58.0 kWh EV6 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, with a maximum 605 Nm torque available on the AWD version. The 58.0 kWh battery pack is paired with a 125 kW electric motor powering the rear wheels. While the AWD models use a 173 kW electric motor to power the front and rear wheels.

Kia’s new E-GMP platform also reduces complexity through modularization and standardization, allowing for rapid and flexible development of products with varied attributes. This flexible development can satisfy various customer needs for vehicle performance within a single model line like EV6.

Kia EV6 GT_SideAs for the EV6 GT, it is equipped with 430 kW dual motors to take electric performance to another level. With a maximum 740 Nm torque available, the AWD GT accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 260 km/h (preliminary development targets). With the addition of electronic Limited Slip Differential software to the EV6 GT version, drivers will enjoy confident control and dynamic ride and handling in all conditions.

“The GT version of EV6 demonstrates our technological leadership through its combination of outstanding high-speed charging and acceleration performance like a super sports car. With our dedicated EV platform, there is no need for compromise between inspiring spaciousness and performance,” said Albert Biermann, President and Head of R&D Division for Hyundai Motor Group.

To replenish power, the EV6 offers 800V and 400V charging capabilities, without the need for additional components or adapters. The car is capable of a high-speed charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes on all variations or a top-up charge of 100 km driving range in less than four and a half minutes (2WD with the 77.4-kWh battery option).

The car’s charging system is more flexible than previous generation BEVs thanks to an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU). The ICCU enables a new vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, which is capable of discharging energy from the vehicle battery. The V2L function can supply up to 3.6 kW of power and is capable, as an example, of operating a 55″ television and air conditioner simultaneously for more than 24 hours. The system is also able to charge another EV, if needed.

With more than 35% charge left in the battery, the EV6 can tow items weighing up to 1,600 kg. Together with the V2L function, EV6 owners can take everything they need on an outdoor adventure with friends and family and do it all with zero emissions.

The EV6 is also fitted with energy-recuperation technologies to maximize driving range. This includes Kia’s latest-generation energy-efficient heat pump as a standard feature, which scavenges waste heat from the car’s coolant system. This ensures that at -7 degrees Celsius, the car can achieve 80% of the range that would be possible at 25 degrees Celsius.

Also featured is the latest generation of Kia’s smart regenerative braking system, which is operated by paddle shifters behind the steering wheel so drivers can quickly and easily slow the car and recuperate kinetic energy to maximize driving range and efficiency. Drivers can choose from six regenerative braking levels (none, 1 to 3, ‘i-PEDAL’, or auto mode), depending on the desired level of energy recuperation. The system’s ‘i-PEDAL’ driving mode also allows the car to harvest the maximum amount of energy from its brakes, and enables the driver to bring the car to a gentle halt without needing to push the brake pedal.

Kia EV6 GT_Interior_Dashboard_Steering_SeatsAdditionally, the EV6 is designed to make travelling safer, easier and less stressful. The high-tech infotainment system includes 12″ dual screens. Curved displays applied to the EV6 have thin film panels that utilise new structure and advanced technology for reducing impact of light. The cluster and infotainment system are connected as if they were wrapped around one body with a reinforced glass. Extending from the steering wheel to the center of the car, it displays a digital cluster in front of the driver, and infotainment system above the center console.

The EV6 also features an augmented reality (AR) head-up display system, which projects driving information onto the base of the windscreen in the driver’s line of sight. The system displays alerts from the car’s Advanced Driver Assistance System, details of vehicle speed, and turn-by-turn navigation instructions.

Also fitted is the ‘Kia Connect’ system (previously named UVO) which features a range of Kia real time services and over-the-air (OTA) updates. Accessible through the touchscreen, Kia Connect allows users to find locations and pricing of EV charging points, view their vehicle’s charging status, plan smart charging schedules and check the range radius based on the remaining charge.

Kia EV6 GT_Interior_Front SeatsA powerful 14-speaker Meridian® surround audio system is also available, a first for a Kia BEV, to deliver a truly immersive sound experience. The 14-speaker audio system has been engineered by the experts at Meridian and features several of the British audio pioneer’s proprietary digital signal processing (DSP) technologies. Meridian’s core sound philosophy has been integrated into the EV6 allowing customers to enjoy natural, lifelike and authentic audio on the move.

The speaker system also offers Active Sound Design (ASD), a newly-developed feature by Kia which provides drivers with audible feedback to the speed that the car is travelling and controlled via a user interface.

Safety-wise, the EV6 offers its class-leading suite of driver assistance systems (ADAS). Safe Exit Assist (SEA) helps people avoid collisions with a rear side vehicle when exiting EV6. When the occupant opens the door to exit the vehicle after a stop, the system provides a warning if an approaching vehicle from the rear side is detected. SEA also helps keep the rear door closed through operation of the electronic child lock.

Lane Following Assist (LFA) helps center the vehicle in the lane. When driving, LFA can be switched on and off with the press of a button. Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) helps maintain a set distance and speed from the vehicle ahead when driving on a highway and also helps center the vehicle in the lane, even through a curve. In case of an adjacent vehicle driving in close proximity, HDA 2 assists to adjust the EV6’s path, so to avoid any possible risk of collision. Also, with the driver’s hands on the steering wheel and above a certain speed, a click of the indicator stalk will move the car into the corresponding lane. Last but not least, Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) helps remotely park or exit a parking spot with the driver operating EV6 from outside the vehicle.

Kia EV6 GT_Tail Light_BumperWill the Kia EV6 land here? Right now, we seem to be still at the top of a top-down adoption of new tech i.e. the EVs are at the premium range. Kia is aiming to make the EV6 a mass market vehicle. So it will be a mismatch with our market at least in the short term. In the longer term, it will depend on the institutional and infrastructure support for the expansion of such a market. Furthermore, if carbon footprint is a concern, manufacturers may not want to set up production too far away from their supply bases.

The new Nissan Navara PRO-4X has been unveiled by Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn Bhd in the run-up to its official launch on 16 April 2021 (you’ll have to wait for the official price to be announced). This “Mother Trucker” carries with it Nissan’s 80-year heritage of pick-up trucks that provide durability, reliability and versatility.

The PRO-4X is a first for the Navara range, and presents a more rugged and stylish appearance, and with smarter features, including Nissan Intelligent Mobility driver assistance features. “The new Nissan Navara PRO-4X is where the best of both worlds intertwined – unbeatable strength and superior intelligence that caters to adventurous Malaysians wanting the next level of design, technology and style,” said Christopher Tan, ETCM Sales and Marketing Director.

The Nissan Navara PRO-4X presents a bolder, more distinct look with its large black ‘Interlock’ front grille, black fender arches, door handles, side mirrors, roof rails and side steps. These are complemented by 17″ wheels, also in black, wrapped in all-terrain tyres. Little bits of magma coloured trim on the fender flares and front bumper give it a pop of colour especially if you had picked the darker exterior paint. Additionally, the Nissan wordmark on the grille, tailgate and wheel caps are also in contrasting red on black.

The Navara PRO-4X is equipped in quad LED projector headlamps, a first for the segment, surrounded by C-shaped daytime running lights. The C-shape is matched at the rear by the LED signature in the tail lamps. Further, the tailgate is integrated with a spoiler and features a torsion bar to assist in easier opening and closing. The rear bumper also incorporates a step in its design for an easier climb to access the flatbed.

To match its rugged go-anywhere, do-anything appearance, this pick-up has a strengthened rear axle and increased truck bed volume to take on the challenge as a workhorse and adventure partner. The Navara PRO-4X’s payload capacity has also been increased to 1.1 tonnes, and the bed comes with a Utili-Track two-channel track system that has four heavy-duty forged aluminium cleats as anchor points for securing loads or cargo.

To pull load, the Navara PRO-4X relies on the 2.5L YD25 turbodiesel engine which provides an output of 190 PS @ 3,600 rpm and 450 Nm @ 2,000 rpm. This power is sent to the wheels via a 7-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. The rated fuel economy is 8.4 litres per 100 km based on the UNECE R101 test cycle. This gives the Navara PRO-4X a theoretical driving range of 950 km from its 80-litre fuel tank. Its physical attributes include a ground clearance of 225 mm and a water wading capability of 600 mm.

The Navara PRO-4X is also fitted with a new electronic locking Rear Differential system that locks both wheels so that they rotate at the same speed and makes it easier to free the truck from loose sand or mud, or when one wheel is off the ground. A new Trailer Sway Assist system also helps to maintain the vehicle driving direction by controlling braking force when the vehicle detects swaying while pulling a trailer. Furthermore, the new Rear Multi-link Suspension with dual-rate coil springs helps reduce body toss regardless of load. In effect, this enhances driving stability and ride comfort. For improved driving feel, the power steering system has been altered to reduce the steering input angle for easier turning and lane changing, as well as reduce effort at low speeds for easier parking.

Assisting the driver is the Nissan Intelligent Mobility suite of safety technology which includes Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist, Intelligent Driver Alertness, Intelligent Predictive Forward Collision Warning & Forward Emergency Braking, Intelligent Around View Monitor with Intelligent Moving Object Detection, Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Moreover, the Around View Monitor is intelligent enough to activate when you switch to 4Lo mode to help you with manouevring around obstacles.

Other features from the Nissan Safety Shield 360 include Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, Traction Control, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Active Brake Limited Slip Differential, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist. It also comes with six SRS airbags.

For the interior, the Navara PRO-4X is fitted with leather upholstery for its Zero-Gravity inspired front seats and rear seats. The rear seats have been improved with new cushion to provide better thigh support and a curved backrest for optimal support. There is also a new rear armrest with built-in cup holders for added convenience. Additionally, there is a total of four USB ports, with one of them a USB-C. Cabin comfort is also helped by the noise isolating acoustic laminated glass of the front windows and windscreen.

For the driver, there is a full colour 7″ high resolution Advanced Drive Assist Display (ADAD) flanked by the tachometer and speedmeter, new sport 3-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel, and an 8″ infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-ready connectivity, and voice recognition.

Four exterior colour choices are available for the Nissan Navara PRO-4X i.e. Stealth Grey (new), Burning Red (new), Pearl White and Black Star.

The Toyota Corolla Cross made its global debut in July 2020, and here we are less than a year later with the official launch in Malaysia. UMW Toyota Motor organised a test drive recently to let us build our first impressions of its latest crossover. The drive covered some highway, urban roads as well as not-so-urban roads to give us an idea of what the Corolla Cross is like.Toyota Corolla Cross_1.8G_Rear

Only the Corolla Cross 1.8G was made available for the drive. This is the base spec that is mechanically similar to the higher 1.8V, but does without certain equipment (which we will mention later) and the Toyota Safety Sense suite. You can read the details from the launch here: http://autoworld.com.my/news/2021/03/25/toyota-corolla-cross-launched-in-malaysia-two-variants-available-from-rm124000/

Exterior

We start off with the most apparent item on the list – what the exterior looks like. Normally I would gloss this aspect over as looks are subjective and based on individual preferences. Of course, there are car designs so extreme that they make the majority of us fall in love. Or want to poke our eyes out multiple times.

But one of the first impressions given by the Corolla Cross is how little resemblance it bears to the Corolla Altis sedan. On the positive side, this gives some variety and differentiation to the Corolla range.

While the Altis has an edgier design and more chrome trim, the Cross is more subdued and has more plastic cladding slapped on. The vertical crease on the outer edges of the front bumper could be the closest similarity between two, though in the Corolla Cross, it is not home to fog lamps (which are housed below the grille) like the Altis.

Nonetheless, there are defining character lines on the front and rear fenders to keep the Corolla Cross from looking too plain. Though these become less obvious in the darker body colours. But overall, the Corolla Cross has an understated appearance that is not polarising and should age well. It will be appreciated by those who don’t like flashy vehicles.

Toyota Corolla Cross_1.8GIts size is somewhere in between the more compact C-HR and the larger RAV4. And despite the Corolla connection, the Corolla Cross has a wheelbase that is 60 mm (2,640 mm) shorter than the Altis sedan. It is also shorter by 170 mm in length (4,460 mm) compared to the Altis, but wider by 45 mm (1,825 mm), taller by 185 mm (1,620 mm) and has a higher ground clearance (+33 mm; 161 mm).

I did mention that we drove the base spec 1.8G and in 2021, the halogen headlights AND daytime running lights really stand out in a sea of LED. For the LED lovers, the front and rear fog lamps have them. As do the tail lights which are LED combination sets. If you need LEDs for everything, then the range-topping 1.8V will provide it all, including LED light curtain effect in the front and rear.

Another difference between our two variants is the 1.8G doesn’t get the acoustic windshield of the 1.8V. The 1.8G also uses 17″ alloy wheels instead of 18″, which should make replacing tyres easier on the pocket. That aside, both variants have powered access to the 440-litre cargo space, complete with kick sensor for hands-free operation.

Interior

The dashboard area is where you see some Corolla Altis. The centre console, steering wheel, gearshift, and air-con vents and trim are shared elements. The arm rests on the door cards and front seats are also similar. However, fans of the 6.8″ multimedia touchscreen unit in the Corolla Altis will be disappointed to learn that the Corolla Cross uses a larger 9″ touchscreen instead. It also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-ready wired connectivity. The screen also shows a 3D panoramic view of the vehicle’s surroundings to aid manouevring in narrow spaces. The image isn’t 2k standard, but is clear enough.

Both Cross variants feature leather seats, six speaker sound system, 8-way powered driver’s seat, sliding front centre armrest, reclining rear seats and rear cooling vents and USB charging ports. But… the climate control system of the Cross is a single zone unit. It still does a good job of cooling but offers less flexibility.

The leather seats are fairly comfortable and offer enough support for the front occupants. Taller passengers in the rear may appreciate more thigh support but this is compensated by a reclining backrest, even if only for 6 degrees. The rear passengers get to enjoy dedicated cooling vents and a pair of 2.1A USB ports for charging devices. The front, however, only get to enjoy a single USB port attached to the head unit. There is also a 12V socket inside the centre armrest storage to add more charging; you can also add in the wireless charging pad option when you purchase the vehicle if you need it. Anyway, if you do not frequently have more than two power-hungry occupants in the vehicle, the default ports will be sufficient.

Driving

Toyota_2ZR-FE_1.8_EngineThe Toyota Corolla Cross is fitted with the 1.8L 2ZR-FE engine paired with a 7-speed CVT with Sequential Shiftmatic that channels 139 PS and 172 Nm of torque to the front wheels. Acceleration isn’t mind-blowing but this doesn’t pretend to be a sporty crossover. It is far from lethargic and the CVT shifts are smooth and get you up to speed fairly well. But once you are in the high rev range, the engine sounds a little harsh. Some added insulation could hide this but that will show up in the final price tag.

Experts in online search engines will be able to find the slight difference in engine output of the Thailand version i.e. 140 PS and 177 Nm. But bear in mind that the Thai version is slightly different to suit that market. The non-hybrid variant for example, uses the 1.8L 2ZR-FBE flex fuel engine that can combust E85 gasohol. Not exactly something we need here.

We also don’t get the hybrid version, yet. But whether we do or not will depend on various factors such as government incentives and market acceptance. FYI, the Corolla Cross Hybrid uses a 1.8L 2ZR-FXE engine with a Synchronous Motor with Permanent Magnet to offer a combined output of 122 PS.

Toyota Corolla Cross_DriveBut, back to the driving. The TNGA-C platform of the Corolla Cross is shared with the Altis and C-HR and provides a rigid base for handling stability and ride comfort. But instead of a double wishbone suspension set-up at the rear like the mentioned models, the Corolla Cross gets a torsion beam with stabiliser. There is no deficiency in handling with this set-up, at least not for a family-style SUV. It was driven on a twisty stretch in Hulu Langat and there wasn’t much drama to it in terms of body roll or control. On the upside, the torsion beam allows for more space in the boot, and simplifies the suspension system which helps to keep the retail price lower.

Toyota claims that the A-pillar of the Cross has been narrowed to give better driving visibility, but this is in relation to the Altis. It is still substantial but the higher seat position and front quarter glass still offers good visibility out. It also has the best turning radius of 5.2 m compared to its nearest rivals in price and size.

The Corolla Cross 1.8G however doesn’t get Toyota Safety Sense, but is still fitted with cruise control, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, as well as the standard VSC, TRC, HAC, ABS, EBD, etc. Additionally, the use of a foot operated parking brake evokes some nostalgia of the old days, and discourages the practice of handbrake turns to preserve tyre life.

Worth To Buy?

Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8G_Media DriveThis is always the tough question. If you place value on an SUV that behaves like a sports car at 200 km/h then this isn’t for you. But if you want something that gets you places, in a dependable and fuss-free way, the Corolla Cross is priced acceptably for what it offers.

Is this perfect? No. Unless it has more luxurious interior trim, a fatter steering wheel, and perhaps rear seats with better thigh support (even though I almost never get to enjoy it), as well as an extra 100 hp on tap. If these things don’t matter much to you, then…

UMW Toyota Motor has launched the Toyota Corolla Cross SUV. Two variants of Toyota’s latest SUV for urban and outdoor adventures will be available for sale from 25 March 2021. The Corolla Cross is imported as a CBU model from Thailand. The Corolla Cross 1.8V is priced at RM134,000 (without sales tax exemption) and the Corolla Cross 1.8G at RM124,000 (with sales tax exemption until 30 June 2021). Prices quoted are for Peninsular Malaysia and without insurance.

“In wasting no time, we are accelerating into 2021 with new drive and synergised mobility. The new Toyota Corolla Cross enters the  ever-growing modern SUV segment, catering to a new generation of mobile adventurous consumers. We are confident that it will prove to be yet another winner as it is ideal for today’s active lifestyles,” said UMW Toyota Motor President, Ravindran K., when introducing the Corolla Cross.

According to Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor, initial market studies have shown that there is a strong and positive response to this new type of Corolla. “This response is not surprising as there is great demand for SUVs globally. As such, we will have this model assembled locally around the end of this year,” he said.

Toyota_Corolla CrossAlthough a member of the Corolla family, the Corolla Cross has entirely different styling from the popular Corolla Sedan. It has a bold design which indicates a sporty and fun-to-drive character with the functionality of a SUV. Like many of the latest Toyota models, the Corolla Cross is built around the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), a structure and platform that allows more engineering flexibility and offers a number of benefits. With TNGA, a lower centre of gravity can be achieved to Improve stability while the highly rigid body enhances agility and ride comfort.

Modern SUVs have a passenger car-like interior with all the comfort and convenience features, pioneered 25 years ago by the RAV4. The Corolla Cross continues with this concept, providing an urban space with a tough premium expression. Besides having a higher seating position, the extra height of the vehicle provides significantly better headroom than other competitor SUV models in the same class. While the Corolla Cross 1.8G uses projector-type halogen headlamps, the 1.8V variant has Bi-LED units that give better illumination. The integrated Day Running Lights clearance lamps feature an intricate ‘light curtain’ graining for a unique, high-quality appearance. The same ‘light curtain’ feature can also be seen on the rear lighting units.

The overall colour theme for the cabin is black with black leather upholstery for the seats, while satin-finish paint is used to highlight ornamentation parts. LED illumination on the front door trim creates a high-quality feel and gives an advanced impression. To enable drivers of any size and height to achieve a comfortable position, the seat has 8-way power adjustment.

The instrument panel has a sporty appearance with a dominant speedometer in the middle and a 4.2″ colour Multi-Information Display (MID). Meanwhile, the large 9″ panel in the middle of the dashboard serves as the display for the audio and infotainment system, as well as the image from the rear view camera. The system is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-ready. Other connectivity options include USB mirroring, AUX and Bluetooth.

Toyota Corolla Cross Boot SpaceBesides the convenience of a Smart Entry & Push Start System to lock / unlock the doors and start / stop the engine, the Corolla Cross also comes standard with a Power Back Door with kick sensor that opens and closes automatically by just positioning a foot near a proximity sensor under the rear bumper. This allows for hands-free operation which will be convenient when both hands are holding bags or other items. The cargo area has a volume of 440 litres with the rear backrests raised. The rear seat backrests have a 60:40 split and can be folded down flat to expand the cargo area. With both backrests down, it is possible to carry two road bicycles. To conceal the items in the cargo area, a tonneau cover is provided. This can be rolled up when not needed.

Toyota Corolla Cross_1.8 L EngineThe Corolla Cross is powered by a 1.8L petrol DOHC engine with Dual VVT-i. This proven engine produces 139 PS @ 6,400 rpm and 172 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm. With the optimised fuel delivery system, the engine offers an excellent balance of power, agility and fuel efficiency. The 7-speed Sequential Shiftmatic transmission (CVT) has improved performance with an electronically-controlled throttle to provide responsiveness, smoothness and quietness.

Further, TNGA encompasses the chassis engineering as well and the suspension is designed to provide a balance of dynamic handling and stability with exemplary ride comfort. The highly acclaimed handling of the Corolla sedan is also evident in the Corolla Cross and some of the characteristics have been optimised for the taller SUV. Moreover, the 5.2-metre turning radius is best-in-class, making parking and moving around easy. At the same time, the increased ground clearance allows the Corolla Cross to handle rough urban roads with ease, and is helpful during floods. Additionally, with an 18° approach angle, it can also travel over uneven terrain and up steep inclines, as well as easily cross over speed bumps with ease. Toyota Safety Sense_Radar_CameraIn the Corolla Cross 1.8V, Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) – a suite of integrated active safety systems to assist the driver – demonstrates Toyota Synergised Mobility. The safety systems in TSS 2.0 consist of a Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) and Automatic High Beam (AHB). These core technologies, which use a radar and camera, are complemented by other safety technologies such as a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and a Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS). The Corolla Cross is also equipped with a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) at the front (optional for rear) enabling the owner to have a video record of the vehicle’s movements at all times. In the event of an incident, the recordings will be available as evidence. Every new Corolla Cross has a factory-installed security system that includes an engine immobilizer.

Additionally, a Vehicle Telematics System (VTS) can track the vehicle’s position using GSM/GPS signals. The owner can also monitor Ignition vehicle status and vehicle speed and if the vehicle is stolen, a 24/7 Command Centre will locate it and inform relevant authorities to recover it. In the event there is an impact detected, the centre will inform emergency services to provide assistance at the vehicle’s location. Owners of Corolla Cross will enjoy 3-years’ free subscription of the VTS. Besides the high-strength TNGA platform, the structure of the Corolla Cross is engineered to withstand impact forces from all sides during an accident, reducing or preventing injuries to the occupants. In crash testing and technical evaluation by ASEAN NCAP, the Corolla Cross, as with many other Toyota models, has received a maximum 5-star safety rating.

Furthermore, the 7 SRS airbags around the cabin (including one for the driver’s knees) will deploy and provide cushioning in severe collisions. ISOFIX points (with tether anchor) are also available in the rear outer seats for installation of compatible childseats, which are now required by law.

Also introduced during the online launch of the model were the two Corolla Cross Ambassadors – Diana Danielle and Danny Koo – who will be closely associated with the new model in advertising and promotional activities. Both are former racers in the Vios Challenge One-Make Series, and lead active lives that the Corolla Cross has been designed to support. “Diana and Danny are celebrities well known to the Malaysian public,” said Mr. Ravindran. “We are happy to have them associated with the Corolla Cross. Diana has a bold personality and constantly breaks boundaries, which matches the Corolla Cross perfectly, while Danny reinvents his perspectives to go beyond his limitations – just like the way the Corolla Cross Reinvents the Rules.”

There are five exterior colour choices to choose from i.e. Red Mica Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Metalstream Metallic, Graphite Metallic and Nebula Blue Metallic.

Toyota Corolla CrossThe Corolla Cross comes with a full 5-year unlimited mileage factory warranty as well as assurance of extensive nationwide aftersales support with ready availability of genuine parts.

The Corolla Cross 1.8V will be available at a later date but bookings are accepted now. Bookings are also available at its virtual showroom.

The McLaren Racing team will continue to use AkzoNobel as its paints and coatings partner for the 2021 season. This partnership goes a long way back, to 2008. The team’s 2021 contender, the MCL35M, will again feature AkzoNobel’s high-performance coatings.

McLaren Racing_F1_AkzoNobel_Coating_PaintAkzoNobel, as the Official Paints and Coatings Partner, is providing its Sikkens vehicle refinish products for all painted parts of the MCL35M, as well as for the team’s transport, garage and accessories. Further, the company’s Marine and Protective Coatings business is also supplying Intertherm 50 heat-shielding from its International product range for critical components surrounding the engine and exhaust. The MCL35M is running the Mercedes engine this season, switching from Renault.

“A partnership that has spanned over a decade, AkzoNobel’s passion to continue to explore and innovate aligns directly with our team. We are delighted to continue our partnership and the development of outstanding innovation through AkzoNobel’s paints and coatings products to help further our race cars’ performance on the track,” said Mark Waller, Chief Commercial Officer, McLaren Racing.

McLaren Racing_AkzoNobel_Paint_Coating“We’re very proud to extend our successful partnership with McLaren Racing, which is driven by collaboration, innovation and the pursuit of high performance,” said Patrick Bourguignon, Director of AkzoNobel’s Automotive and Specialty Coatings business. “The McLaren F1 team’s spirit and dedication to success inspires us in our endeavor to continue delivering the best products and services to all our customers.”

Scientists and technicians at McLaren Racing and AkzoNobel have been working together for more than a decade, with the partnership having been extended in 2012 to include McLaren Automotive. As well as helping to accelerate innovation in coatings technology and color development, the collaboration has also paved the way for future exploration of new opportunities.

“We’re all extremely enthusiastic to see our Sikkens and International coatings in action on the MCL35M this season and can’t wait for the scheduled return of F1 racing to the Netherlands in September,” added Bourguignon.

McLaren Racing_Daniel Ricciardo_Lando NorrisMcLaren finished a well deserved third place in the Constructor’s Championship for the 2020 season, signalling its comeback as podium contenders. This year, besides the new engine, the team will have a new driver in Daniel Ricciardo, who will partner Lando Norris. Daniel finished fifth in the 2020 driver standings, while Lando was ninth.

The 2021 Formula 1 season will start this weekend in Bahrain (26 – 28 March).

A new season of the Toyota GAZOO Racing Festival will start this weekend (27 – 28 March 2021) at the Sepang International Circuit. This will be the fourth successive season of the festival which included racing, celebrities, and entertainment for the whole family. This year however, the festival’s opening round will be closed to the public as current conditions require it to operate in a Sports Bubble to adhere to strict health and safety measures.

Fans of motor racing and Toyota however, can witness the action online through Toyota’s various media platforms.

Toyota Gazoo Racing_Malaysia“The concept of the festival remains unchanged, only the manner in which it reaches out to the public in these extraordinary and challenging times. The Toyota GAZOO Racing Festival has primarily been about bringing motorsports to the masses and we will continue to do this,” said UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd President Ravindran K.

The entire festival weekend will be livestreamed this weekend. Though there won’t be a crowd of visitors like previous years, the festival and races can now reach out to an even larger and wider audience, including racing fans outside of Malaysia.

“The people who have come to the Toyota GAZOO Racing Festival over the past three seasons have done so for many different reasons. Some come for the racing, others for the chance to spend time with their favourite celebrities, and there are those who are there for the so many different on-ground activities and attractions. Moving forward, it is imperative we continue with this even if it means going online, as this is what has fundamentally made the festival unique and a huge success,” he added.

UMW Toyota Motor_Gazoo Racing Young Talent Development Program_Vios ChallengeThere will be four classes of racing this year, with the inclusion of the inaugural Rookie Class that will see six new graduates of the GAZOO Racing Young Talent Development Program stepping up from karting and simulator to race in saloon car racing. The race weekend will include three qualifying sessions, and six individual races. Fans who tune in will also get to follow pit lane insights and interviews with the racers.

Further, a new livestream entertainment segment i.e. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing OFFTHEGRID will make its debut. It will be anchored by the 10 local celebrities who are also racing in the Vios Challenge.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival_Vios Challenge_SepangThe celebrities include actor Shukri Yahaya, actress Janna Nick, presenter Nabil Ahmad, and singers Wany Hasrita, Nabila Razali and Khai Bahar who have raced in previous seasons. The three newbies to Season 4 are actor Zizan Razak, singer / songwriter Talitha Tan, and television personality Ahirine Ahirudin. All will be competing in the Promotional Class except for beatboxer and two-time Promotional Class champion, Shawn Lee, who now moves up to take on the big boys in the Sporting Class for amateurs.

In a segment called Jom Duet Bersama Khai Bahar, Wany Hasrita and Nabila Razali, fans are invited to participate in an acting and singing duet challenge with the best submissions to be aired during the live stream.

Meanwhile, two of Malaysia’s leading comedians Nabil Ahmad and Zizak Razak will also join forces for Latah Positif and Berita Apani, to give viewers a quirky insight into the festival. In Melodi Misteri, celebrities will take turns to sing out loud a song that only they can hear while wearing a racing helmet and fans will have to guess the song that is sung.

Toyota’s six new young drivers (simulator racers Mika Hakimi, 17 and Naquib Azlan, 20; and karters Amer Harris, 17; Jwan Hii, 18; Putera Adam, 14; and Troy Eimann, 16) and GAZOO Racing Ambassador Tengku Djan Ley Tengku Mahaleel will also go head to head in a battle to test their reaction times in a series of challenges off the circuit in Toyota Arena Bersama Rookies & Tengku Djan.
