UMW Toyota Motor has launched the Toyota Corolla Cross SUV. Two variants of Toyota’s latest SUV for urban and outdoor adventures will be available for sale from 25 March 2021. The Corolla Cross is imported as a CBU model from Thailand. The Corolla Cross 1.8V is priced at RM134,000 (without sales tax exemption) and the Corolla Cross 1.8G at RM124,000 (with sales tax exemption until 30 June 2021). Prices quoted are for Peninsular Malaysia and without insurance.

“In wasting no time, we are accelerating into 2021 with new drive and synergised mobility. The new Toyota Corolla Cross enters the  ever-growing modern SUV segment, catering to a new generation of mobile adventurous consumers. We are confident that it will prove to be yet another winner as it is ideal for today’s active lifestyles,” said UMW Toyota Motor President, Ravindran K., when introducing the Corolla Cross.

According to Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor, initial market studies have shown that there is a strong and positive response to this new type of Corolla. “This response is not surprising as there is great demand for SUVs globally. As such, we will have this model assembled locally around the end of this year,” he said.

Toyota_Corolla CrossAlthough a member of the Corolla family, the Corolla Cross has entirely different styling from the popular Corolla Sedan. It has a bold design which indicates a sporty and fun-to-drive character with the functionality of a SUV. Like many of the latest Toyota models, the Corolla Cross is built around the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), a structure and platform that allows more engineering flexibility and offers a number of benefits. With TNGA, a lower centre of gravity can be achieved to Improve stability while the highly rigid body enhances agility and ride comfort.

Modern SUVs have a passenger car-like interior with all the comfort and convenience features, pioneered 25 years ago by the RAV4. The Corolla Cross continues with this concept, providing an urban space with a tough premium expression. Besides having a higher seating position, the extra height of the vehicle provides significantly better headroom than other competitor SUV models in the same class. While the Corolla Cross 1.8G uses projector-type halogen headlamps, the 1.8V variant has Bi-LED units that give better illumination. The integrated Day Running Lights clearance lamps feature an intricate ‘light curtain’ graining for a unique, high-quality appearance. The same ‘light curtain’ feature can also be seen on the rear lighting units.

The overall colour theme for the cabin is black with black leather upholstery for the seats, while satin-finish paint is used to highlight ornamentation parts. LED illumination on the front door trim creates a high-quality feel and gives an advanced impression. To enable drivers of any size and height to achieve a comfortable position, the seat has 8-way power adjustment.

The instrument panel has a sporty appearance with a dominant speedometer in the middle and a 4.2″ colour Multi-Information Display (MID). Meanwhile, the large 9″ panel in the middle of the dashboard serves as the display for the audio and infotainment system, as well as the image from the rear view camera. The system is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-ready. Other connectivity options include USB mirroring, AUX and Bluetooth.

Toyota Corolla Cross Boot SpaceBesides the convenience of a Smart Entry & Push Start System to lock / unlock the doors and start / stop the engine, the Corolla Cross also comes standard with a Power Back Door with kick sensor that opens and closes automatically by just positioning a foot near a proximity sensor under the rear bumper. This allows for hands-free operation which will be convenient when both hands are holding bags or other items. The cargo area has a volume of 440 litres with the rear backrests raised. The rear seat backrests have a 60:40 split and can be folded down flat to expand the cargo area. With both backrests down, it is possible to carry two road bicycles. To conceal the items in the cargo area, a tonneau cover is provided. This can be rolled up when not needed.

Toyota Corolla Cross_1.8 L EngineThe Corolla Cross is powered by a 1.8L petrol DOHC engine with Dual VVT-i. This proven engine produces 139 PS @ 6,400 rpm and 172 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm. With the optimised fuel delivery system, the engine offers an excellent balance of power, agility and fuel efficiency. The 7-speed Sequential Shiftmatic transmission (CVT) has improved performance with an electronically-controlled throttle to provide responsiveness, smoothness and quietness.

Further, TNGA encompasses the chassis engineering as well and the suspension is designed to provide a balance of dynamic handling and stability with exemplary ride comfort. The highly acclaimed handling of the Corolla sedan is also evident in the Corolla Cross and some of the characteristics have been optimised for the taller SUV. Moreover, the 5.2-metre turning radius is best-in-class, making parking and moving around easy. At the same time, the increased ground clearance allows the Corolla Cross to handle rough urban roads with ease, and is helpful during floods. Additionally, with an 18° approach angle, it can also travel over uneven terrain and up steep inclines, as well as easily cross over speed bumps with ease. Toyota Safety Sense_Radar_CameraIn the Corolla Cross 1.8V, Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) – a suite of integrated active safety systems to assist the driver – demonstrates Toyota Synergised Mobility. The safety systems in TSS 2.0 consist of a Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) and Automatic High Beam (AHB). These core technologies, which use a radar and camera, are complemented by other safety technologies such as a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and a Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS). The Corolla Cross is also equipped with a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) at the front (optional for rear) enabling the owner to have a video record of the vehicle’s movements at all times. In the event of an incident, the recordings will be available as evidence. Every new Corolla Cross has a factory-installed security system that includes an engine immobilizer.

Additionally, a Vehicle Telematics System (VTS) can track the vehicle’s position using GSM/GPS signals. The owner can also monitor Ignition vehicle status and vehicle speed and if the vehicle is stolen, a 24/7 Command Centre will locate it and inform relevant authorities to recover it. In the event there is an impact detected, the centre will inform emergency services to provide assistance at the vehicle’s location. Owners of Corolla Cross will enjoy 3-years’ free subscription of the VTS. Besides the high-strength TNGA platform, the structure of the Corolla Cross is engineered to withstand impact forces from all sides during an accident, reducing or preventing injuries to the occupants. In crash testing and technical evaluation by ASEAN NCAP, the Corolla Cross, as with many other Toyota models, has received a maximum 5-star safety rating.

Furthermore, the 7 SRS airbags around the cabin (including one for the driver’s knees) will deploy and provide cushioning in severe collisions. ISOFIX points (with tether anchor) are also available in the rear outer seats for installation of compatible childseats, which are now required by law.

Also introduced during the online launch of the model were the two Corolla Cross Ambassadors – Diana Danielle and Danny Koo – who will be closely associated with the new model in advertising and promotional activities. Both are former racers in the Vios Challenge One-Make Series, and lead active lives that the Corolla Cross has been designed to support. “Diana and Danny are celebrities well known to the Malaysian public,” said Mr. Ravindran. “We are happy to have them associated with the Corolla Cross. Diana has a bold personality and constantly breaks boundaries, which matches the Corolla Cross perfectly, while Danny reinvents his perspectives to go beyond his limitations – just like the way the Corolla Cross Reinvents the Rules.”

There are five exterior colour choices to choose from i.e. Red Mica Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Metalstream Metallic, Graphite Metallic and Nebula Blue Metallic.

Toyota Corolla CrossThe Corolla Cross comes with a full 5-year unlimited mileage factory warranty as well as assurance of extensive nationwide aftersales support with ready availability of genuine parts.

The Corolla Cross 1.8V will be available at a later date but bookings are accepted now. Bookings are also available at its virtual showroom.

The McLaren Racing team will continue to use AkzoNobel as its paints and coatings partner for the 2021 season. This partnership goes a long way back, to 2008. The team’s 2021 contender, the MCL35M, will again feature AkzoNobel’s high-performance coatings.

McLaren Racing_F1_AkzoNobel_Coating_PaintAkzoNobel, as the Official Paints and Coatings Partner, is providing its Sikkens vehicle refinish products for all painted parts of the MCL35M, as well as for the team’s transport, garage and accessories. Further, the company’s Marine and Protective Coatings business is also supplying Intertherm 50 heat-shielding from its International product range for critical components surrounding the engine and exhaust. The MCL35M is running the Mercedes engine this season, switching from Renault.

“A partnership that has spanned over a decade, AkzoNobel’s passion to continue to explore and innovate aligns directly with our team. We are delighted to continue our partnership and the development of outstanding innovation through AkzoNobel’s paints and coatings products to help further our race cars’ performance on the track,” said Mark Waller, Chief Commercial Officer, McLaren Racing.

McLaren Racing_AkzoNobel_Paint_Coating“We’re very proud to extend our successful partnership with McLaren Racing, which is driven by collaboration, innovation and the pursuit of high performance,” said Patrick Bourguignon, Director of AkzoNobel’s Automotive and Specialty Coatings business. “The McLaren F1 team’s spirit and dedication to success inspires us in our endeavor to continue delivering the best products and services to all our customers.”

Scientists and technicians at McLaren Racing and AkzoNobel have been working together for more than a decade, with the partnership having been extended in 2012 to include McLaren Automotive. As well as helping to accelerate innovation in coatings technology and color development, the collaboration has also paved the way for future exploration of new opportunities.

“We’re all extremely enthusiastic to see our Sikkens and International coatings in action on the MCL35M this season and can’t wait for the scheduled return of F1 racing to the Netherlands in September,” added Bourguignon.

McLaren Racing_Daniel Ricciardo_Lando NorrisMcLaren finished a well deserved third place in the Constructor’s Championship for the 2020 season, signalling its comeback as podium contenders. This year, besides the new engine, the team will have a new driver in Daniel Ricciardo, who will partner Lando Norris. Daniel finished fifth in the 2020 driver standings, while Lando was ninth.

The 2021 Formula 1 season will start this weekend in Bahrain (26 – 28 March).

A new season of the Toyota GAZOO Racing Festival will start this weekend (27 – 28 March 2021) at the Sepang International Circuit. This will be the fourth successive season of the festival which included racing, celebrities, and entertainment for the whole family. This year however, the festival’s opening round will be closed to the public as current conditions require it to operate in a Sports Bubble to adhere to strict health and safety measures.

Fans of motor racing and Toyota however, can witness the action online through Toyota’s various media platforms.

Toyota Gazoo Racing_Malaysia“The concept of the festival remains unchanged, only the manner in which it reaches out to the public in these extraordinary and challenging times. The Toyota GAZOO Racing Festival has primarily been about bringing motorsports to the masses and we will continue to do this,” said UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd President Ravindran K.

The entire festival weekend will be livestreamed this weekend. Though there won’t be a crowd of visitors like previous years, the festival and races can now reach out to an even larger and wider audience, including racing fans outside of Malaysia.

“The people who have come to the Toyota GAZOO Racing Festival over the past three seasons have done so for many different reasons. Some come for the racing, others for the chance to spend time with their favourite celebrities, and there are those who are there for the so many different on-ground activities and attractions. Moving forward, it is imperative we continue with this even if it means going online, as this is what has fundamentally made the festival unique and a huge success,” he added.

UMW Toyota Motor_Gazoo Racing Young Talent Development Program_Vios ChallengeThere will be four classes of racing this year, with the inclusion of the inaugural Rookie Class that will see six new graduates of the GAZOO Racing Young Talent Development Program stepping up from karting and simulator to race in saloon car racing. The race weekend will include three qualifying sessions, and six individual races. Fans who tune in will also get to follow pit lane insights and interviews with the racers.

Further, a new livestream entertainment segment i.e. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing OFFTHEGRID will make its debut. It will be anchored by the 10 local celebrities who are also racing in the Vios Challenge.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival_Vios Challenge_SepangThe celebrities include actor Shukri Yahaya, actress Janna Nick, presenter Nabil Ahmad, and singers Wany Hasrita, Nabila Razali and Khai Bahar who have raced in previous seasons. The three newbies to Season 4 are actor Zizan Razak, singer / songwriter Talitha Tan, and television personality Ahirine Ahirudin. All will be competing in the Promotional Class except for beatboxer and two-time Promotional Class champion, Shawn Lee, who now moves up to take on the big boys in the Sporting Class for amateurs.

In a segment called Jom Duet Bersama Khai Bahar, Wany Hasrita and Nabila Razali, fans are invited to participate in an acting and singing duet challenge with the best submissions to be aired during the live stream.

Meanwhile, two of Malaysia’s leading comedians Nabil Ahmad and Zizak Razak will also join forces for Latah Positif and Berita Apani, to give viewers a quirky insight into the festival. In Melodi Misteri, celebrities will take turns to sing out loud a song that only they can hear while wearing a racing helmet and fans will have to guess the song that is sung.

Toyota’s six new young drivers (simulator racers Mika Hakimi, 17 and Naquib Azlan, 20; and karters Amer Harris, 17; Jwan Hii, 18; Putera Adam, 14; and Troy Eimann, 16) and GAZOO Racing Ambassador Tengku Djan Ley Tengku Mahaleel will also go head to head in a battle to test their reaction times in a series of challenges off the circuit in Toyota Arena Bersama Rookies & Tengku Djan.

Volvo Car Malaysia has started a partnership with E-waste Recycling Through Heroes (ERTH) to provide Malaysians a responsible way to dispose of and recycle their used electronics. This partnership makes available an E-waste Green Box at all Volvo Car dealerships nationwide, as well as at the Volvo Car Manufacturing Malaysia (VCMM) plant, to collect used electronics for recycling.

Volvo_Showroom_DealershipThis green initiative is part of Volvo Car Malaysia’s ongoing sustainability campaign i.e. the Volvo Green Planet, which aims to bring greater awareness towards today’s pressing climate concerns and moves the brand closer to its long-term goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040.

As a group, Volvo Cars is on a mission to reduce CO2 emissions by 40% per car between 2018 and 2025 via electrification, and also to tackle carbon emission from all aspects of its business, from manufacturing and operations to its supply chain and even its approach to recycling and reuse of materials.

Along with other Volvo Cars facilities worldwide, Volvo Car Malaysia is embracing this commitment on the local front to practice more sustainable approaches to its business. It has abstained from single-use plastics and has gone paperless for all brochures and price lists at its headquarters and Volvo dealerships.

Volvo_Showroom_Green Box_Recycling_E-waste Recycling Through HeroesIn a move to expand its sustainability efforts, Volvo Car Malaysia is opening the doors of its dealerships nationwide to anyone who wishes to dispose of their electronic waste responsibly. Sharing the same vision for a more sustainable future, VCMM also extends the same invitation to Malaysians to drop off their used electronics at a dedicated area.

The Volvo dealerships and VCMM will have a dedicated E-waste Green Box located in a visible and accessible area for the general public, not just prospective customers, to drop off any devices or components running on electricity or battery that can fit into the box. This includes, but is not limited to, laptops, mobile phones, monitors, tablets, printer, keyboard, batteries and gaming consoles. For bulkier items, individuals are encouraged to book a free pickup service on www.erth.app.

Volvo Car Malaysia_Akhtar Sulaiman_Marketing & PR Director“At Volvo, we walk the talk. Instead of only talking about sustainability, we drive it by embracing and integrating the practice into our business and day-to-day life. When coming up with the idea for the E-waste Green Box, we wanted to enable all Malaysians – and not just our customers and employees – so that together we can drive this sustainability journey together, for the greater good of our planet and our future generations, so that we leave behind a safer and greener world for them to live in,” said Akhtar Sulaiman, Marketing and PR Director of Volvo Car Malaysia.

ERTH is a registered organisation with the Malaysian Department of Environment (Jabatan Alam Sekitar). It collects, purchases and transports electronic waste to be recycled at local government-licensed recycling facilities. Further, ERTH ensures that the recycling process is in line with the guidelines from the Basel Convention, an international agreement treaty designed to reduce the movement, transport and/or shipment of hazardous waste between nations.

Mohamed Tarek El-Fatatry, Founder of ERTH, said: “We are glad to partner with companies such as Volvo Car Malaysia who are taking proactive steps to address the climate and waste problems in our country. In Malaysia, only about 25% of our e-waste is recycled according to the latest government statistics, while the remainder is often incinerated or dumped in landfills. We hope that through this collaboration and Volvo Car Malaysia’s network of dealerships across the nation, more people can be encouraged to adopt proper recycling habits for the sake of our planet.”

Volvo Cars' manufacturing plant in Ghent“Responsible business is a fundamental part of Volvo Car Malaysia, which is why we are proud to collaborate with ERTH that ensures the electronic waste is recycled and repurposed in the correct manner and in accordance to guidelines that have been laid down. In an age where electronics are abundant, we partly contribute to the problem, so we need to also be a part of the solution. Recycling and repurposing is one of the best ways to offset one’s carbon emission, and we hope that more Malaysians can take part in joining us to create a greener future,” added Akhtar.

You can drop-off your used electronic devices in the E-waste Green Box at the authorised Volvo dealerships listed here: https://www.volvocars.com/my/find-a-dealer. The E-waste Green Box is also placed at the security guard post of VCMM’s plant site in Shah Alam.

Petron Blaze 100 is the first and only high performance RON 100 fuel in Malaysia. Launched in 2016, this high-energy fuel is produced at Petron’s Port Dickson refinery. This high octane petrol has been tested for its power, engine responsiveness and fuel efficiency by Malaysian consumers using different types of vehicles.

The overall feedback from consumers showed that Petron Blaze 100 provides improved driving performance. The top benefit cited by customers is instant responsiveness, followed by better fuel economy. This combination makes Blaze 100 the fuel for an enjoyable and smooth long distance drive.

According to Daniel Chin Wei Xiong, who tested Petron Blaze 100 in his personal Nissan GT-R: “It feels more powerful as it provides me with better acceleration. My engine feels much more responsive with RON 100 and the pick-up is faster. You can feel the improved power when overtaking”.

Petron_Blaze 100_Tan Meang Keat_Yamaha MT-09Sharing the same sentiment, Volkswagen Golf owner, Lim Jae Sam said: “The fuel offers me a slight power gain and more responsive acceleration.”

Meanwhile, motorcyclist Tan Meng Keat who fueled his Yamaha MT-09 with Blaze 100 said, “I really feel the burst of power and acceleration when I twist my throttle. The response is instant. It only takes me six seconds to get from a rolling 50 km/h to 100 km/h.”

Petron_Blaze 100_Petrol PumpPetron Blaze 100 contains the TriAction Advantage formulation which combines a fully synthetic detergent, organic combustion improver and friction modifier to enable the fuel to burn more efficiently. This premium formulation not only enhances engine responsiveness but helps to clean and protect the engine. This helps to improve responsiveness and fuel economy. It also helps prolong efficient operation of catalytic converters due to its low sulfur content.

“My engine is much smoother now and it gave me better mileage. It is such an enjoyable feeling to drive with RON 100, totally different,” commented Daniel. The Nissan GT-R engine was also “slightly quieter” on Petron Blaze 100 according to Daniel.

Additionally, Tan said his motorcycle has a smoother sound and less vibration, while ignition was easier.

On highway or long distance driving, the customers’ feedback on fuel economy is positive. “My fuel consumption has improved by 15% as compared to other fuels. It is much better with Petron Blaze 100 and I believe the fuel can make a difference to my running costs in the long run. Definitely worth the premium,” said Lim about his Volkswagen.

Petron_Blaze 100_Daniel_Nissan GT-RSimilarly Daniel commented: “It gives me better mileage than RON 97, which I usually pump. A full tank gives me about 350 km, which can last me between one to two weeks. I do believe Petron Blaze 100 will provide better value for money in the long run as it also gives me engine protection on top of the better mileage.”

Petron_Fuel Station_Petrol_DieselChoong Kum Choy, Petron Head of Retail and Commercial Business said, “We are committed to deliver innovative products that are exceptional, products that enhance customer experience. Our Blaze 100 is one such product. With the demand for Blaze 100, we have made Blaze 100 available at more than 100 stations today. This is to ensure that more consumers can have the opportunity to enjoy this exceptional fuel.”

Blaze 100 is now available at more than 100 service stations throughout Malaysia to fuel its customers’ demands for better fuel performance.

muv has established a partnership with Lim Tayar (a member of the CKL Group) to provide free car inspection service for those who want to sell their cars. This partnership starts off with five Lim Tayar outlets in the Klang Valley, with plans to add more Lim Tayar outlets nationwide by the end of 2021.

This free inspection service will be performed by trained and experienced Lim Tayar technicians at their respective outlets. Inspected vehicles will have a full report on muv’s bidding platform (and receive the muv Verified badge) to provide buyers with more confidence when buying the used vehicle. The report provides potential buyers the assurance that the said vehicle’s condition has been inspected and verified as what the seller has declared, while indicating the current condition of the vehicle in detail.

muv is the largest ‘Marketplace for Used Vehicles’ in Malaysia. The inspected vehicles will be listed on muv’s bidding platform (www.muv-x.com) which is Malaysia’s first end-to-end bidding platform connecting both sellers and buyers. muv facilitates the entire process for both the seller and buyer – especially consumers, with financing, vehicle inspection and registration fully taken-cared of.

In driving this turnkey partnership within the automotive industry, Andy Teh, CEO of muv said, “We are very happy to partner Lim Tayar, a homegrown brand that is popular with the local community. Lim Tayar’s outlets adds additional geographical locations for car sellers to go to, for car inspections and to find out how much their cars are worth in the current market. This partnership will help muv stay true to our ethos of making the process of buying and selling cars as seamless and convenient as possible.”

“We are excited to continue to grow our network nationwide this year by establishing more muv outlets and partner locations such as Lim Tayar so we can continue to facilitate and provide a platform for Malaysians to BUY and SELL their cars quickly. With Lim Tayar, we hope to continue to push the boundaries of how muv is revolutionising the way consumers buy and sell their cars,” Teh continues.

Lim TayarClement Lim, Joint Managing Director of CKL Group said, “In line with our new direction to push for partnerships with industry leaders in their own field, we are happy to announce our collaboration with muv which is our new foray into the used vehicle marketplace. This is an exciting space to be part of and we are confident that our ecosystem comprising of students from our vocational institute, products we distribute as well as with the support of our dealers network nationwide, we will be able to ensure the success of this partnership.” Lim Tayar has been in the automotive retail and servicing business since 1985.

The five Lim Tayar outlets currently available to conduct the free inspection service on behalf of muv are: muv_Lim Tayar_Car Inspection

Should you plan to sell your car, you will be able to base your asking price on the valuation / inspection report by Lim Tayar and put the vehicle up for listing on muv’s platform. muv’s bidding platform is visible and accessible to potential buyers nationwide.

Once the said vehicle’s listing has received the highest bid, the seller will need to confirm the bid and surrender the vehicle at the nearest muv hub. Upon confirmation from the buyer, the seller will receive the payment for their car listing within 2 – 3 days.

Further, muv provides easy and transparent end-to-end services including financing for consumers. You can also upload your car for listing on its platform by yourself (and get it verified later at the nearest muv or available Lim Tayar outlet) and reach thousands of potential buyers 24/7 who can then bid for it online.

To further enhance muv’s end-to-end solution, muv will facilitate the entire buying and selling process by connecting the buyer and seller on one platform, whether they are used car dealers or individual consumers that may or may not require financing.

If required, muv helps with financing applications via its panel of available banks and accredited credit companies. Once financing is successful or once payment for the car has been organised, muv will perform all the necessary tasks to facilitate the sale such as Puspakom inspection, ownership transfer, issuance of the road tax and insurance.

The UD Extra Mile Challenge (UDEMC) is a global driver competition organised by UD Trucks to pick the best of the best as the Ultimate Driver. In a normal year, local markets hold qualification rounds and the best driver selected from each market qualifies to take part in the Global Final held at the UD Experience Center in its headquarters in Japan. The situation in 2020 however, forced the cancellation of the Japan Global Final. Thus, instead of holding such an event, UD Trucks had decided that all local market winners are chosen as Ultimate Drivers.UD Trucks_Extra Mile Challenge_Driving

UD Extra Mile Challenge 2020 AwardThe title of Ultimate Driver is a worthy designation in these trying times considering that these drivers are the heroes who kept trucks moving during the pandemic. They continued to deliver the goods and necessities that we all depend on. In light of the current situation which restricts travel, a virtual awards ceremony was held where the 10 winners from 9 countries were honoured and officially crowned as Ultimate Drivers.

UD Trucks_President_Takamitsu SakamakiAddressing the winners from the headquarters in Ageo, Japan, UD Trucks President Takamitsu Sakamaki said, “It is a shame that you cannot be with us in person to celebrate this occasion, but we are delighted that you could join us for this virtual event. You are truly the unsung heroes, supporting society in the midst of the pandemic, carrying food and medical supplies to people in need. We congratulate and thank you for your outstanding contribution to logistics.”

UD Trucks_Ultimate Driver_Extra Mile ChallengeWhile the pandemic has also fueled the growth of e-commerce, the logistics industry remains highly competitive, making efficient drivers an essential asset for trucking companies. The ability of the driver to maximise fuel efficiency not only contributes to the bottom line, but helps reduce emissions and environmental impact. The UD Extra Mile Challenge, which started in 2015, is a way to promote and recognise the safest and most fuel efficient truck drivers.

The UD Extra Mile Challenge simulates a day in the life of a truck driver and tests both pre-inspection and driving techniques i.e. from fuel efficient and safe driving to parking skills.

The 2020 UDEMC winners were selected among 500 drivers who had competed in qualifying rounds held in nine countries i.e. Australia, Singapore, South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and the Philippines. Each winner was awarded an Ultimate Driver prize box, which included a custom made cap, shirt and masks. Last but not least the box contained two virtual airline tickets to Japan, which will be converted to actual tickets once normal international travel resumes.

The Ultimate Drivers in the respective truck category, representing their respective companies and countries are:

  • Australia (UD Quon): Steve Gould, B&D Crane Trucks
  • Indonesia (UD Quester): Irwan Wijaya, PT. Lancar Jaya Logistik
  • Malaysia (UD Quester): Khairul Nafsha bin Ishak, Setia Maju Jaya Logistik Sdn Bhd
  • Qatar (UD Quester): Sameer Shah, Power Waste Management

  • Thailand (UD Quester): Suppachai Tacharoen, Nim See Seng Transport 1988

Our UD Ultimate Driver, Khairul Nafsha, has about 13 years’ experience as a truck driver. Although he only started driving the UD Quester about 3 years ago, Khairul also scored the best marks in the “Best Driving Skill” category at the local round of the UDEMC. Khairul’s win in the Malaysia round also represented the second consecutive year that a driver from Setia Maju Jaya Logistik Sdn Bhd had won the local UDEMC.

On behalf of the winners, Efren Zamora from Philippines, thanked UD Trucks for its support, saying “COVID-19 added challenges to our daily work. In Philippines, we were required to submit additional documentation when entering different cities, which hampered our operations somewhat. However, this was also motivation to improve my driving skills to maximize fuel efficiency while keeping safety as the top priority. Being recognized as an Ultimate Driver is a huge honor for me and I hope to become an even better driver in the future.”

The Daihatsu Gran Max pick-up and panel van has been upgraded with a Euro 4 compliant engine for better performance and efficiency. According to Daihatsu Malaysia Sdn Bhd (DMSB), this improved and enhanced model will replace the Euro 2 version which will be phased out.

The new Daihatsu Gran Max Euro 4 models use a 1.5L 2NR aluminium block engine with Dual VVT (variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valves) to provide improved fuel efficiency and driving performance. Additionally, the new engine achieves Euro 4 level reductions in NOx and particulate emissions to help reduce its environmental impact.

The Gran Max has a 43-litre fuel tank and claims better fuel consumption compared to the outgoing model. The official fuel efficiency ratings are:

  • Pick Up (MT)            12.5 km/l*
  • Panel Van (MT)        13.3 km/l*
  • Panel Van (AT)         13.5 km/l*

* The fuel efficiency is conducted under specific test conditions and may vary depending on usage environment (weather, road conditions, etc.) and driving method.

The Gran Max has the typical van-style front mid-engine layout where the engine is positioned beneath the front seats for optimal front-rear weight distribution. This helps with driving stability at higher speeds and during cornering. The Electrical Power Steering (EPS) in the new models also provides better handling, driving comfort and fuel economy. The new Gran Max also uses 14″ wheels compared to the 13″ in the older model, for better stability and control while carrying loads.

Daihatsu Malaysia_Arman Mahadi_Managing Director“Demand has always been encouraging for Daihatsu Gran Max as it is used in a wide variety of industries, including in construction, service, agriculture as well as in courier, delivery and logistics sectors. With this upgrade, Daihatsu intends to cater to the needs of those looking for improved fuel-efficiency and performance and to support the work and lifestyles of a variety of customers. With Daihatsu Global Group’s “Light you up” approach, we will continue to provide optimal mobility to every customer with our versatile range of light commercial vehicles,” said Arman Mahadi, Managing Director of Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

More importantly, as a commercial workhorse is its loading and carrying capacity. Both the Gran Max pick-up and van variants have superior loading capacity for a light commercial vehicle. The Gran Max pick-up has a maximum loading capacity of 800 kg while the van version has a maximum of 750 kg.

Daihatsu Gran Max Euro 4_Pick-UpThe Gran Max pick-up has a square-shaped deck measuring 2,480 mm in length which provides a roomy cargo space. The walls of the deck are 360 mm high and feature 20 rope hooks, enabling any cargo to be securely held. In addition, both vehicles have a minimum turning radius of 4.9 meters, making them easy to manoeuvre even in narrow spaces.

Daihatsu Gran Max Euro 4_Panel VanFor the Gran Max van, a low floor clearance of 620 mm and a wide rear door opening makes it easy to load and unload cargo from the hold. The cargo hold is square so cargo can be stacked right to the corners. It can hold boxes, tall objects, furniture, and other large loads. With a driver and single passenger seated, the length of the cargo hold is 2,075 mm. The vehicle also features 815 mm sliding doors on both sides, making it more convenient to load and unload cargo in tight areas.

Daihatsu Gran Max_InteriorAdditional practical compartments are included to provide added convenience, along with other essential comforts such as the Passenger Seat Open Tray, the Centre Console Tray, three Cup Holders (passenger, driver and console box).

The new models continue to be equipped with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Emergency Signal System (ESS) as well as Dual SRS Airbags for driver and passenger, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Immobilizer, Reverse Sensors and Alarm System.

Arman added, “We are very thankful for the prompt economic stimulus measures implemented by the Malaysia government as it has greatly fuelled the recovery in the automotive sector since the pandemic struck. The PRIHATIN scheme, together with the National Economic Recovery Plan (PENJANA), introduced by the government to help restart the economy, has resulted in a business resurgence for SMEs, particularly small and micro businesses, with the Daihatsu Gran Max being the best choice of business vehicle for this segment.”

The Gran Max Euro 4 is produced at the Daihatsu plant in Indonesia. Its retail price starts from RM73,614 (on-the-road without insurance).
