The Daihatsu Gran Max pick-up and panel van has been upgraded with a Euro 4 compliant engine for better performance and efficiency. According to Daihatsu Malaysia Sdn Bhd (DMSB), this improved and enhanced model will replace the Euro 2 version which will be phased out.

The new Daihatsu Gran Max Euro 4 models use a 1.5L 2NR aluminium block engine with Dual VVT (variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valves) to provide improved fuel efficiency and driving performance. Additionally, the new engine achieves Euro 4 level reductions in NOx and particulate emissions to help reduce its environmental impact.

The Gran Max has a 43-litre fuel tank and claims better fuel consumption compared to the outgoing model. The official fuel efficiency ratings are:

  • Pick Up (MT)            12.5 km/l*
  • Panel Van (MT)        13.3 km/l*
  • Panel Van (AT)         13.5 km/l*

* The fuel efficiency is conducted under specific test conditions and may vary depending on usage environment (weather, road conditions, etc.) and driving method.

The Gran Max has the typical van-style front mid-engine layout where the engine is positioned beneath the front seats for optimal front-rear weight distribution. This helps with driving stability at higher speeds and during cornering. The Electrical Power Steering (EPS) in the new models also provides better handling, driving comfort and fuel economy. The new Gran Max also uses 14″ wheels compared to the 13″ in the older model, for better stability and control while carrying loads.

Daihatsu Malaysia_Arman Mahadi_Managing Director“Demand has always been encouraging for Daihatsu Gran Max as it is used in a wide variety of industries, including in construction, service, agriculture as well as in courier, delivery and logistics sectors. With this upgrade, Daihatsu intends to cater to the needs of those looking for improved fuel-efficiency and performance and to support the work and lifestyles of a variety of customers. With Daihatsu Global Group’s “Light you up” approach, we will continue to provide optimal mobility to every customer with our versatile range of light commercial vehicles,” said Arman Mahadi, Managing Director of Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

More importantly, as a commercial workhorse is its loading and carrying capacity. Both the Gran Max pick-up and van variants have superior loading capacity for a light commercial vehicle. The Gran Max pick-up has a maximum loading capacity of 800 kg while the van version has a maximum of 750 kg.

Daihatsu Gran Max Euro 4_Pick-UpThe Gran Max pick-up has a square-shaped deck measuring 2,480 mm in length which provides a roomy cargo space. The walls of the deck are 360 mm high and feature 20 rope hooks, enabling any cargo to be securely held. In addition, both vehicles have a minimum turning radius of 4.9 meters, making them easy to manoeuvre even in narrow spaces.

Daihatsu Gran Max Euro 4_Panel VanFor the Gran Max van, a low floor clearance of 620 mm and a wide rear door opening makes it easy to load and unload cargo from the hold. The cargo hold is square so cargo can be stacked right to the corners. It can hold boxes, tall objects, furniture, and other large loads. With a driver and single passenger seated, the length of the cargo hold is 2,075 mm. The vehicle also features 815 mm sliding doors on both sides, making it more convenient to load and unload cargo in tight areas.

Daihatsu Gran Max_InteriorAdditional practical compartments are included to provide added convenience, along with other essential comforts such as the Passenger Seat Open Tray, the Centre Console Tray, three Cup Holders (passenger, driver and console box).

The new models continue to be equipped with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Emergency Signal System (ESS) as well as Dual SRS Airbags for driver and passenger, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Immobilizer, Reverse Sensors and Alarm System.

Arman added, “We are very thankful for the prompt economic stimulus measures implemented by the Malaysia government as it has greatly fuelled the recovery in the automotive sector since the pandemic struck. The PRIHATIN scheme, together with the National Economic Recovery Plan (PENJANA), introduced by the government to help restart the economy, has resulted in a business resurgence for SMEs, particularly small and micro businesses, with the Daihatsu Gran Max being the best choice of business vehicle for this segment.”

The Gran Max Euro 4 is produced at the Daihatsu plant in Indonesia. Its retail price starts from RM73,614 (on-the-road without insurance).

Malaysia Commercial Vehicle Exhibition_MCVE
MCVE 2019

The Malaysia Commercial Vehicle Exhibition (MCVE) 2021 is set to happen 21 – 23 October 2021. This confirmation follows the government’s green light for the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) sector to restart, as well as current roll-out of the national inoculation programme. This will be the fifth biennial exhibition organised by Asian Trucker Media. MCVE is the biggest event for the commercial vehicle industry in Southeast Asia.

The three-day event will be held again at the Malaysia International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC). It will feature a strong line-up of exhibitors and a well-rounded programme, adjusted to the current circumstances and respecting the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for safety and health. The fringe programme is being developed and will be announced in due course.

MCVE was first held in 2013 and has grown as a platform to showcase innovations in the commercial vehicle sector. The event has expanded with increased number of visitors and provides an avenue for those involved in the transportation of goods or people to network and conduct business.

MCVE 2019

“Every two years we refine the program to offer a unique experience. We keep advancing just like the industry is moving forward, and in finding ways to make the event meaningful. Return on investment is important for our exhibitors and our efforts are aligned with their ambition,” said Stefan Pertz, organiser of the event.

As a result of the pandemic, many brands have not been able to showcase their new products and services to live audiences. Pertz believes that many companies have been holding back with their launches as they are looking for the right platform, such as MCVE, to do so.

The current list of exhibitors confirming participation includes first-time joiners as well as brands that have been part of the exhibition in the previous four instalments.

Stefan Pertz_Asian Trucker_Malaysia Commercial Vehicles Expo“We believe that our event could be the launchpad for many products that have been waiting to be put in the limelight. Even products launched in the MCVE that is intended for a global market can be showcased globally through the use of modern technology and broadcasting techniques, should international travel be still not possible by October”, explained Pertz.

Pertz is confident that the 2021 exhibition will yield good results as it has always been the organising team’s aim to host an exhibition that is on par with established international events and to ensure all parties, be it exhibitors or visitors, benefit from their participation.

He further assured that SOPs will be thoroughly complied with throughout the event as it is organised with the fight against the pandemic in mind. “It is to be an event that is both safe and successful, as nothing else is acceptable,” he commented.

Bookings for exhibition spaces will be open until very close to the show dates. Updates on the event can be found in www.mcve.com.my.

Volvo Cars has made a very strong and decisive commitment for electrification. By 2030, the company wants to become a fully electric car company. It is hoping that this resolute objective will make Volvo the leader in the fast-growing premium electric car market. By then, the company intends to only sell fully electric cars. Thus, with this goal, it will be doing away with the internal combustion engine from its global portfolio. This will include phasing out hybrids.

Volvo cars and bicyclistsThe year 2030 also coincides with the City of Gothenburg’s objective to become a climate-neutral city. Gothenburg, Sweden is Scandinavia’s largest port city and also the hometown of Volvo. Nonetheless, this is still an ambitious plan by a global automotive player. A few years ago, the company also made a bold promise that “nobody should be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo car” by 2020, and it did so by limited the top speed of its new cars to 180 km/h where it deemed the active and passive safety features of its cars are good enough to hold that promise true.

Volvo Cars’ transition towards becoming a fully electric car maker is part of its ambitious climate plan, which seeks to consistently reduce the lifecycle carbon footprint per car through concrete action. Its decision also builds on the expectation that legislation as well as a rapid expansion of accessible high quality charging infrastructure will accelerate consumer acceptance of fully electric cars.

Volvo Cars XC40 Recharge - detailsThe company’s move towards full electrification comes together with an increased focus on online sales and a more complete, attractive and transparent consumer offer under the “Care by Volvo” name. All of its fully electric models will be available exclusively online.

The 2030 ambition represents an acceleration of Volvo Cars’ electrification strategy, driven by strong demand for its electrified cars in recent years and a firm conviction that the market for combustion engine cars is a shrinking one.

Håkan Samuelsson - Chief executive“To remain successful, we need profitable growth. So instead of investing in a shrinking business, we choose to invest in the future – electric and online,” said Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive. “We are fully focused on becoming a leader in the fast-growing premium electric segment.”

Volvo Cars launched its first fully electric car, the XC40 Recharge, in markets around the globe last year. In February 2021, it launched its second fully electric car, the C40 Recharge.

In the coming years, Volvo Cars will roll out several additional electric models. Already by 2025, it aims for 50% of its global sales to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids. It had already tripled its EV production capability at its plant in Ghent, Belgium to prepare for the increase in demand. Volvo Cars' manufacturing plant in Ghent

Henrik Green - Chief technology officer“There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine,” said Henrik Green, chief technology officer. “We are firmly committed to becoming an electric-only car maker and the transition should happen by 2030. It will allow us to meet the expectations of our customers and be a part of the solution when it comes to fighting climate change.”

We have some corporate social responsibility news to start a nice day. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), recently made donations of cash and laptops to several organisations as part of their CSR initiative. The official distributor of Mitsubishi Motors vehicles in Malaysia had donated RM35,000 to First International Soccer Academy Malaysia (FISA), and laptops to Pertubuhan Kebajikan Yesuwin Mahligai Selangor (PKYMS) and the Arthritis Foundation Malaysia (AFM).Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia_First International Soccer Academy Malaysia_FISA_children_B40

The company wants to support FISA’s efforts for the betterment of children particularly from the B40 income group, as well as to manage teenagers’ involvement in negative social issues.

“We recognized FISA’s efforts in working towards the betterment of young children and to put a stop towards their involvement in social issues. In line with boosting the country’s economic growth for the underprivileged family, we hope that our contribution for the academy may continue to assist them to develop these children’s competencies and to provide them with the opportunities to excel and lead a better life,” said Tomoyuki Shinnishi, Chief Executive Officer of MMM.

Additionally, MMM donated laptops to Pertubuhan Kebajikan Yesuwin Mahligai Selangor (PKYMS) and Arthritis Foundation Malaysia (AFM) to assist students who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to support AFM administration purposes.

“We understand that many students at the welfare homes were at a limitation or left without the technology they require to continue their education. We hope that the contribution of these laptops will support the children for home based learning throughout the pandemic,” Shinnishi added.

“As the nation wait for the hopeful vaccine, we understand that each day brings new or different challenges for many of us. At Mitsubishi Motors, we aim to create a better society where people can hope for a better future. We have been making efforts to support the local activities of society and contribute towards the development of the local communities through its various needs,” he concluded.

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM), the sole distributor of Hyundai vehicles, is set to launch its award-winning luxury SUV, Palisade, and its compact 2021 facelifted Kona SUV in Malaysia.

The Hyundai Palisade is the brand’s flagship 7-seater SUV. Built on a new SUV chassis, it provides exceptional roominess for the second and third row seats as well as generous cargo space. It is powered by an Atkinson-cycle 3.8L V6 engine with dual CVVT and direct injection which offers excellent power and efficiency with 291 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 355 Nm of torque @ 5,000 rpm.Hyundai Palisade

Thanks to its spaciousness, the Palisade is positioned as the ultimate family vehicle that offers practicality and comfort for daily use. Notable features include a Head-Up Display (HUD) and an industry-first innovative new roof vent diffuser design that provides a focused, partially-diffused or fully-diffused stream of air to rear passengers. This new diffuser vent design provides quieter rear air conditioning airflow, draft-free operation, more uniform distribution of air and the capability for a focused stream of air whenever desired.

Additionally, the facelifted 2021 Kona will also be coming. HSDM had launched the Kona last year and had received good feedback. “The public had their first look of our compact SUV, Kona, last year and it was well received despite the stiff competition in the SUV segment. Considering the positive response and reviews received for the newly designed Kona overseas, we are confident we will be able to capture more hearts this time around,” said Mr Low Yuan Lung, Managing Director of HSDM.

Some of the highlights of the facelifted Kona are a new Smartstream G2.0 Atkinson-cycle engine, an updated front fascia design, new 17″ and 18″ wheels, an enhanced SmartSense state-of-the-art safety package and a remote starter.Hyundai Kona_2021 Facelift

The 2021 Kona Smartstream G2.0 Atkinson four-cylinder petrol engine is paired with a CVT automatic and produces 149 PS @ 6,200 rpm and 180 Nm of torque @ 4,500 rpm for the front wheels. The Smartstream engine is said to offer dynamic performance with a smoother, more comfortable driving experience, reduced emissions and better fuel efficiency.

On the exterior, the Kona will continue with an urban sporty styling as part of Hyundai’s Sensuous Sportiness global design theme. The new exterior design is even more provocative and sensuous than before with a curved bonnet design.

This facelifted version also projects a more sophisticated and progressive look in its interior. The new console area gets a new horizontal layout while the air vents and speakers also get new rings with aluminium finish.

Also included in the new version is an upgraded ambient lighting technology that lights up the cupholder and foot lamps on the front passenger and driver side. New interior colour options, materials and trims are also to be expected.

Low said that while the Palisade and the facelifted Kona are among models that HSDM will be launching this year, other new models are also in the pipeline and are bound to excite the market.

You know something is popular when people of questionable character devise scams and deception involving it. And this is the warning Perodua wants its existing and potential customers to take note of. There have been apparent scams that have started after the launch of the new Perodua Ativa. Perodua is urging everyone to only deal with its authorised sales advisors to avoid being deceived by any type of scam.

Perodua Ativa AV_Rear Right“We have discovered at least two fraudulent rebate offers online for the newly-launched Perodua Ativa, which is not our practice,” Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad said, adding that the promotions did not originate from Perodua or any of its outlets nationwide.

According to Dato’ Zainal, some scammers have posed as Perodua sales advisors before and lured potential victims into placing their new car purchase deposits into the “sales advisors” personal bank accounts instead of the dealership’s company account.

To safeguard both existing and potential Perodua customers, below is a quick ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ guide when purchasing a new Perodua vehicle:Perodua_Do's_Don'ts_Scam
