BMW 740Le xDrive Plug-In Hybrid Malaysia Launch 2017 Headlights & Front GrilleThe kidney grilles have been a synonymous and well-recognised part of BMW. The signature grille had been part of the face of almost every vehicle from Bayerische Motoren Werke for almost 90 years, and they have evolved over time in design, usually marking a new era in BMW’s innovation.

With such a storied past, BMW Group Malaysia has picked out from the rich brand heritage, ten design milestones of the legendary kidney grilles, and how they have changed over time.

1. The BMW 303 (1933)

BMW 303The 303 was a milestone in BMW history in two respects: the BMW 303 was the brand’s first model with a six-cylinder engine, and also the first to have the feature that still characterises every BMW almost 90 years later i.e. air intake through a double kidney grille.

While the centre bar-divided radiator masks may not have been ground-breaking in automotive design at the time, the car achieved a highly sculptural effect with the grille – rounded at the top and bottom, with the BMW emblem punctuated between the upper arches. The result was an ensemble with a high recognition value.

2. The BMW 507 (1956)

BMW 507The BMW 507 roadster was the first BMW to appear with two large, horizontally mounted air intakes. The creator, Albrecht Graf von Goertz, expressed creative freedom with the design of the double kidney, which BMW designers were not to take up again until the 1990s, with various design projects. However, the large-format air intakes of the BMW 507 were also necessary, as they were instrumental in providing the only source of fresh air for the radiator of the roaring V8 engine under the flat bonnet.

3. The BMW 1500 (1961)

BMW 1500The “new class” mid-range models welcomed a new era for BMW in every aspect: technologically, commercially, and aesthetically.

The kidney grilles of the BMW 1500 were narrower than all previous BMW models and set between two horizontal grilles that spanned the whole car. With its primary and secondary air grilles, the BMW 1500 inspired the front-end design of the core BMW models up to the 1980s, which include the legendary BMW 3.0 CS, BMW CSi and BMW CSL.

4. The BMW M1 (1978)

BMW M1The first-ever official M-badged independent model, the BMW M1 from 1978 is a special case in the design of the double kidney. The deep-drawn front-end design cleverly incorporates ultra-flat air inlets, while still brandishing the characteristic kidneys as a defining feature of the brand.

They are among the smallest examples ever to decorate a BMW. The design of the double kidney on the BMW M1 was taken up again in the front-end design of later BMW niche models, such as the BMW Z1 (1988) and the BMW 8 Series (1989).

5. The BMW 3 Series (1990)

BMW 3 SeriesA further evolutionary leap followed in 1990 with the third-generation BMW 3 Series: a flat and horizontally mounted double kidney design. Unlike in the first generations of the BMW 3 Series, the two halves of the radiator ensemble were separated again.

Rectangular with slightly rounded corners, the kidneys were separated from the headlamp bands not by grilles, but by surfaces of the car’s body. This design is seen in many BMW models of the 1990s – from the BMW 7 Series (1994) and the BMW 5 Series (1995), through to the BMW Z3 (1995) and the following-generation BMW 3 Series (1998), and finally to the first two generations of the BMW X5 (1999).

6. The BMW i3 (2013)

BMW i3The front design of the electric BMW i3 exemplifies one of the few occasions where the aesthetic function of the BMW kidneys takes centre stage. The flat, relatively wide double kidney, with deliberately closed surfaces and blue accents, signifies its identity as both a BMW vehicle and also an innovative electric vehicle.

Aerodynamics of the BMW i3 are also improved with the closed kidney grilles and the design, similar to that of the BMW i8, and serves as the inspiration for all future fully electric BMW models.

7. The BMW 8 Series, the BMW Z4 (2018)

BMW Z4 2018With two current high-performance vehicles by BMW, the 2018 double kidney gains a new and relatively angular frame shape. The grilles, connected in the BMW 8 Series and unconnected in the BMW Z4, now form horizontally mounted, wide pentagons.

As in every newer BMW coupé, sportiness is emphasised by the kidneys “opening downwards”, providing a lower centre of gravity visually. Functionally, the kidney grilles serve as secondary air intakes with an active air flap control system that closes as required to reduce air resistance. In the connected design, as seen in the BMW 8 Series (and other models with tethered kidney), a camera for the driver assistance systems sits in the middle of the brace connecting the two halves of the kidney.

8. The BMW 3 Series Sedan (2018)

BMW 3 Series 2018In the current BMW 3 Series, the modern design of the double kidney combines some familiar features (connected kidneys, directly connected headlamp surfaces, pentagonal frame shape) with new characteristics. For example, the kidneys are positioned significantly higher than the upper edge of the headlamps, extending up into the bonnet above a bend. The upper edges of the headlamps are connected to each other by the edges in the kidneys, which have the same alignment.

A striking feature of the M Performance variants of the BMW 3 Series is the replacement of the classic vertical kidney rods with small wedge shapes woven into the mesh structure.

The BMW X7 and the current BMW 7 Series each have double kidneys of similar design to the BMW 3 Series, including the horizontal bend towards the top edge. However, in these two models they are much larger in size and much more striking.

9. The BMW 4 Series Coupé (2020) – A Bridge to The Future

BMW 4 Series CoupeThe most recent development of the double kidney for series production vehicles celebrated its world premiere digitally in the BMW Group’s design studio in Munich, in the historic halls of the BMW Group Classic, and on the BMW Group’s test site in Aschheim.

The focus was on the individual design features, which include the large, upright, and forward-leaning BMW kidney at the front of the car. A look back at BMW history shows just how much the new BMW 4 Series Coupé is in the tradition of the brand’s legendary sports cars.

Outstanding classics such as the BMW 328 Coupé from the 1930s and the BMW 3.0 CS from the 1970s are part of BMW’s fascinating coupé history, which is marked by prestige, driving pleasure and success on the racetrack, and is now being enriched by a further chapter.

For designer Seungmo Lim, who is responsible for the design language of the BMW 4 Series Coupé, the design of the vertical double kidney is a bridge to the future. “We have a strong design history. A hallmark makes a car recognisable – and the double kidney is one of our icons. Nevertheless, BMW design has to be reinterpreted and translated into the future again and again. To take this bold step forward, we have looked into our past for the new BMW 4 Series Coupé,” he said.

Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia, adds, “The new BMW 4 Series Coupé is the latest incarnation of the BMW brand’s enduring DNA. Boldly taking up the torch once held by many iconic BMW models throughout the ages, it continues the brand’s legacy of forward-thinking designs, paying an homage to the past with tomorrow’s possibilities.”

10. The BMW Vision iNEXT (2018), the BMW Vision M NEXT (2019)

BMW Vision iNEXTWith two vision cars, the BMW Group is offering a glimpse of what the brand’s primary distinguishing feature might look like in future models. In the purely electric BMW Vision iNEXT, the double kidney turns out to be a further development of the BMW i3 kidneys. Its closed surface houses sophisticated cameras, sensors, and other technologies for assisted and automated driving.

Internally, this solution is also called “shy-tech” – high technology that works discreetly. In the hybrid sports car, the BMW Vision M NEXT, a sculpturally strong double kidney enclosed within glass emerges, with surfaces featuring engraved, stylised BMW logos.

Illumination of the two kidneys incorporating a spectacular colour gradient projects a mesmerising three-dimensional effect; something that will not be seen for the last time in a BMW.

‘Design’ is designed to evoke emotions. Sometimes the response is overwhelmingly positive, and sometimes it swings to the extreme end and either leaves you speechless or makes you want to throw a shoe at it. Nonetheless, a feeling has been stirred. Through the years, BMW has both played it safe and also gone all out to shock and awe. Its latest iteration of the iconic kidney grille may not be to your liking, but it got you talking about it, even if it is to mock it. Personally, I think the new one suits the new car design.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has revealed a collection of Bespoke commission starting with the Cullinan in Rolls-Royce Bright Red. This special Cullinan is one of eight vibrant Cullinans created by the Bespoke Creative at Goodwood, Home of Rolls-Royce.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan_BRIGHT RED_Grille_Spirit Of Ecstasy“We wanted to give our clients the chance to see and be inspired by colours that had been developed previously through the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Design department but may not have seen the light of day through this limited run Bespoke Collection,” said Will Vetter, Product Manager for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Americas.

Colour development is a careful process that requires a careful eye and an immense amount of patience. At the same time, colour is the most outward expression of a commission. Vetter added “When a designer takes cues from the world around us or even a client’s vision, the process to make it into a reality on a Rolls-Royce is complicated, complex with painstaking precision and sometimes unexpected delightful results.”

The ‘Colours of Cullinan Collection’ includes eight Rolls-Royce Cullinans. The first four have been received in the United States led by Cullinan in Rolls-Royce Bright Red. Upcoming commissions come in Paradiso Blue, Dark Olive and Selby Grey. The collection will be completed with the imminent reception of Cullinan finished in Peacock Blue, Bright Green, Forge Yellow and Plum which are currently in the final stages of development and production. Some of these creations are destined for their homes with Rolls-Royce clients in the United States, while some will be used by the brand as examples to inspire even more personal creations. The colour experts of the Design Collective at Goodwood await the collaboration of more clients in developing even more vibrant and personal colours for Rolls-Royce lovers to enjoy.

Rolls-Royce_Cullinan Paradiso Blue_castle_front“When our clients commission a Rolls-Royce motor car, colour is the most outward expressions of their personality. At Rolls-Royce Motor Cars we have more than 44 thousand colours in our working palette and are constantly experimenting with new and creative commissions. Especially as so many of our clientele throughout North America have elected to celebrate their commissions with personal, vibrant, and unique colours and colour combinations, we created this collection to share these emotions and stimulate ideas with luxury lovers everywhere,” said Martin Fritsches, President & CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Americas

As with all Rolls-Royce dealerships, clients can start their own Bespoke commission by visiting their local Rolls-Royce Motor Cars authorised dealership to start their own creative journey.

After a break of 61 years, Aston Martin is making a return to Formula One, the pinnacle of motorsport. Refreshed as the Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team, it is bringing British Racing Green back to the tracks.

The team’s new car, AMR21, was launched recently, heralding the beginning of a significant chapter in the 108-year history of the Aston Martin brand. The new Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team car returns the British ultra-luxury marque to the pinnacle of world motorsport for the first time in over 60 years.Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team_AMR21_05

Described by Aston Martin Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll as an ‘important event in automotive history’, the AMR21 will be the first works Formula 1 car to carry the famous wings since Maurice Trintignant’s DBR5 crossed the finish line at Silverstone in 1960. The AMR21, to be raced this season by four-time F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel and rising star, Lance Stroll (CA), carries a striking Aston Martin Racing Green livery in recognition of Aston Martin’s traditional racing colours and glorious sporting legacy. It is also bedecked by a host of global partners, led by American IT giant Cognizant. The chassis features a magenta stripe down the side in reference to the team’s longstanding partner, BWT.

As the team is set to become the global showcase for the brand’s engineering and performance capabilities, a new 200,000 square-foot facility will complement the existing Aston Martin F1 factory at Silverstone starting in the second half of 2022. This will help the team to become an innovation lab to drive forward the brand’s future road car technologies, including a suite of mid-engined sportscars, inspired by the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which will become central to the product portfolio through the next decade.

Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, with motorsport at the heart of its endeavour. Next year (2022) will mark a century since Aston Martin made its grand prix debut (in France 1922). The brand has enjoyed sustained success in sports car racing, including overall victory in the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans. Most recently Aston Martin became a double class winner with the Vantage GTE in last year’s race at La Sarthe and is the reigning GT FIA World Endurance Manufacturers’ champion.

The Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team also boasts a strong bloodline, building on the foundations of Team Silverstone, which in its various guises has won five grands prix, and is coming off the back of a race-winning campaign as the Racing Point Formula On Team, having been revitalized under the leadership of Lawrence Stroll and Team Principal and CEO Otmar Szafnauer.

The new AMR21 is powered by a Mercedes-AMG F1 M12 E Performance turbocharged engine with hybrid energy recovery. With the new race car also comes the opportunity for Aston Martin to communicate the evolution of the iconic Aston Martin Wings logo for only the 12th time in the company’s 108-year history. The AMR21 will run a full test programme at Bahrain on 12 – 14 March. The car that will run in testing, as well as in the first race, will very likely have different aerodynamic elements to the launch car shown here.

Executive Chairman of Aston Martin Lagonda, Lawrence Stroll said: “I’ve dreamed about this day for a very long time. I’ve always been a car guy and I’ve always loved racing, too. My first dream was to own a Formula One team. My second dream was to acquire a significant shareholding in Aston Martin Lagonda. Today is about the merging of those two dreams. So, as I say, today is all about dreams, and it shows that dreams really can come true, in the shape of our new AMR21.

“Aston Martin returning to Formula One after an absence of 61 years will have a powerful effect on the sport, the media and the fans, commanding global attention. “The team who designed and built our new Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One car – the 500 men and women who conceive, manufacture, build and prepare our cars so that we can go racing at the pinnacle of global motorsport – has always punched above its weight. Now, as the Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team, it has the power with which to punch even harder.

“This is just the beginning. The team is pushing forward, and our ambitions are limitless. We now have the pieces in place, the people and the partners, to make real progress”.

Chief Executive Officer, Aston Martin Lagonda, Tobias Moers said at the launch: “Today is a truly historic moment for Aston Martin, as we return to the pinnacle of motorsport for the first time in more than 60 years. The Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team will have far-reaching positive effects on the Aston Martin brand, our culture, and the design and technology of Aston Martin road cars. Our return to Formula One will positively and profoundly affect every employee and foremost our customer journey all over the world; and will help us bring a focused, agile Formula One way of thinking to the whole Aston Martin business.

“Indeed, the Formula One team will become a dynamic and exciting innovation lab to drive forward future Aston Martin road car technologies and performance, which will truly differentiate our cars in the coming years. Aston Martin has always made beautiful cars. Now, as we begin a new era of Aston Martin in Formula One, we’ll bring more innovation and more performance.”

The 2021 season for Formula One will begin with the Bahrain Grand Prix on 28 March.

Porsche has launced the Taycan Cross Turismo in a virtual world premiere, expanding its portfolio of all-electric sports cars. As its name implies, the Taycan Cross Turismo is the off-road version of Porsche’s electric sports saloon.Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo_EV

Oliver Blume_Chairman_Executive Board of Porsche AG“In 2019, we sent out a key signal with the debut of our first all-electric sports car,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “We see ourselves as pioneers of sustainable mobility: by 2025, half of all the new vehicles we will deliver will have an electrified drive – either fully electric or plug in hybrid. In 2020, one in three of all vehicles we delivered in Europe had an electric powertrain. The future belongs to electric mobility. With the Taycan Cross Turismo, we’re taking another major step in this direction.”

The sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart has built the Taycan Cross Turismo on the new high-tech chassis with all-wheel-drive and adaptive air suspension for added off-road driving dynamics. For its occupants, there is an extra 47 mm of rear headroom. Further, it has more than 1,200 of load capacity accessible via a large tailgate. The Taycan Cross Turismo also benefits from an innovative electric drive with 800-volt architecture.

There are four variants of the Taycan Cross Turismo to satisfy different preferences:

    • Taycan 4 Cross Turismo with 280 kW (380 PS), overboost power for Launch Control 350 kW (476 PS), acceleration 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, top speed 220 km/h, range (WLTP) 389 – 456 km.
    • Taycan 4S Cross Turismo with 360 kW (490 PS), overboost power with Launch Control 420 kW (571 PS), acceleration 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, top speed 240 km/h, range (WLTP) 388 – 452 km.
    • Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo with 460 kW (625 PS), overboost power with Launch Control 500 kW (680 PS), acceleration 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, top speed 250 km/h, range (WLTP) 395 – 452 km.
    • Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo with 460 kW (625 PS), overboost power with Launch Control 560 kW (761 PS), acceleration 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, top speed 250 km/h, range (WLTP) 388 – 419 km.

* Range was determined in accordance to the new Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP)

The Performance Battery Plus pack, which has a total capacity of 93.4 kWh, is fitted as standard, as are the all-wheel-drive and adaptive air suspension. Available as an option is the Off-road Design package which increases ground clearance by up to 30 mm. This means that the Cross Turismo can also be driven on demanding off-road terrain. The standard “Gravel Mode” improves the suitability of the new model for driving on rough roads.

Mission E Cross Turismo
Mission E Cross Turismo

In terms of appearance, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo closely follows the Mission E Cross Turismo concept study presented at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. Its silhouette is defined by the sporty roofline sloping downward to the rear (called a “flyline” by the Porsche designers). Off-road design elements include wheel arch trims, unique front and rear lower aprons and side sills. As part of the Off-road Design package, the Cross Turismo has special flaps at the corners of the front and rear bumpers and at the ends of the sills. These make for a striking exterior as well as providing protection from stone impacts.

One of the accessories developed by Porsche especially for the Taycan Cross Turismo is a rear carrier for up to three bicycles that sets the benchmark in terms of package size and handling. The carrier can be used universally for different types of bikes. One of its innovative features is that the tailgate can be opened even when the rear carrier is loaded. Additionally, Porsche is also presenting two high-quality e-bikes at the same time – the eBike Sport and the eBike Cross. With their timeless design as well as their powerful and sustainable drive technology, they are perfectly matched to the Taycan Cross Turismo.

The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is slated for a Malaysia launch in the second half of 2021, and is now available for pre-orders at Porsche Centres nationwide. To find out more and register your interest, visit any of these dealer websites:

Tan Chong Ekspres Auto Servis_TCEAS_Service Centre_Aftersales“We continually look to revolutionise the way used cars are sold. In the past it has always been ‘buy-and-sort-it-out-yourself’ when it comes to used cars. We want to give customers a better experience when it comes to buying a used car. Moreover, with the MCO/RMCO climate where there are various restrictions affecting how far one can move around – this partnership is perfect for consumers who can now tap on to the availability of trusted TCEAS service centres for them to pick based on their convenience,” he added.

muv had set up a very dynamic marketplace for used vehicles, having a focus on establishing the technology to optimise the user’s buying and selling experience. muv offers a 24/7 listing with hundreds of vehicles available for bidding on www.muv-x.com.

If you who would like to view and/or discuss your vehicle buying and selling options, you can drop by the muv hubs located in Klang Valley and Penang, or just view the cars online.

Michael Yao, Executive Vice President for TCEAS shared, “With this strong partnership, we are creating a business synergy with authentic integrity. Customers can be rest assured that their service needs are well taken care of with 6 months or 10,000 km service warranty”.
