The last Defender rolling out of the Solihull plant in January 2016

Jaguar Land Rover (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (JLRM) is organizing a special roadshow to celebrate the Land Rover Defender as tribute to the iconic 4X4 vehicle which is no longer in production.

The Land Rover Defender Rover Team’s roadshow will visit more than 14 selected locations including malls, business districts, popular cafes and other popular hangouts in the Klang Valley and Penang from April 23 till May 1, 2016.

The Land Rover Defender Rover TeamThe roadshow will feature two Land Rover Defenders equipped with two Final Edition Defender Accessories Packages to suit different lifestyles – adventure or urban.

The public can sign up for test drives and upload #CelebrateDefenderMy Instagram posts, take up the Defender Hill Climb Challenge on iPad and other games to win various exclusive collectibles.

According to JLRM Managing Director Datuk Aishah Ahmad, the Land Rover Defender Rover Team’s roadshow marks the end of an era for the much-loved off-roader. “Production of the Land Rover Defender officially ceased globally when the last of the current Defenders left the final assembly line at its Solihull production facility in England on January 29, 2016. What we have here in Malaysia is truly the last batch of this incredibly versatile vehicle with a history that spans 68 years.  Therefore, it is the last chance to own a piece of heritage,” she said.

More than two million Series Land Rovers and Defenders have been built in Solihull, UK since 1948. What began as simply a line drawing in the sand has gone on to become one of the world’s most iconic 4x4s, earning the accolade of being the most versatile vehicle on the planet, capable of taking owners to places other vehicles could not reach.

The Land Rover Defender began its life in 1948 as the Series I, at a time when post-war Britain was struggling with a shortage of steel, which explains the use of aluminium for its bodyshell. Created by brothers Spencer and Maurice Wilks, the Land Rover was originally designed primarily for farming and agricultural use.

Part of the Land Rover’s appeal came from the endless variants that were created off the basic platform, including models as diverse as fire engines, lorry-like Forward Control vehicles, cherry pickers and even an amphibious car capable of floating on water. Over its 68 year history, it has been a vehicle driven by everyone from farmers and famous explorers, to royalty.

Earlier this week, we reported that Mercedes-Benz had finally joined the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA), a grouping of automotive and technology companies seeking to integrate the Android operating system into cars, leaving its German compatriot BMW as the only major automaker not in the alliance, allegedly due to privacy issues.

It was reported that Apple CEO, Tim Cook, had in 2014 visited BMW’s headquarters to have a look at the i3 electric car. Speculation of a collaboration however, was neither denied nor confirmed.

Apple has never officially confirmed that they are working on a car but industry rumors and staff movements showed otherwise. Apple’s car project is unofficially known as ‘Project Titan’, parked under the ‘Special Projects’ division.

According to German newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Apple has hired about 20 young and “progressive thinkers” to work in a secret research and development lab in Berlin. This team’s background ranges from software and hardware engineering to sales. Among the new staff Apple has hired includes many from Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer (CEO Elon Musk has called Apple “The Tesla Graveyard” due to the poaching of Tesla staff), including Chris Porritt, former Tesla Vice President of Vehicle Engineering and former Aston Martin Chief Engineer responsible for the One-77 supercar, Zagato and DB9.

Other notable Apple recruitment are Doug Betts, former quality control chief at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Paul Furgale, autonomous vehicle researcher, Jamie Carlson, senior engineer at Tesla and Emery Sanford from Ford.

There is no smoke without fire and a company that makes computers and lifestyle gadgets doesn’t hire specialists from the automotive industry to work on a new smartphone or notebook, or place them in Berlin, half a world away from Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino.

This leads to the speculation that Apple is in some way working with BMW on a car. And since the OAA is meant to push a system that rival’s Apple’s own CarPlay, BMW sees it as a conflict of interest and opted not to join.

Due to the German/Europe connection and since Apple doesn’t have a car manufacturing plant, rumor has it that the Apple Car (or whatever it will be called; iCar maybe?) will be manufactured by Austrian company, Magna Steyr which coincidentally contract manufactures for BMW and Mini.

What do you think is the reason why BMW isn’t part of the OAA?

If there’s a good time to buy a car, it’s the weekend of 20 – 22 May. Visitors who place bookings on a passenger car at the My Auto Fest car sales show stand to win a Nissan Almera 1.5L worth RM82,000 in a lucky draw.

All you need to do is find a good deal on a good car, book the car at the show, apply for your bank loan and do all the normal stuff within two months, just before the Hari Raya Holidays. All booking forms will be collected from car companies on the last night of My Auto Fest and two months later, the organizers will get an independent competition manager to draw the winning buyer.

Shell Rimula is set to further strengthen its market leadership position as the best-selling heavy duty diesel engine oil (HDDEO) brand in the world and Malaysia with a completely new range of products and a new enhanced flagship fully synthetic product, which all come in newly designed packaging.

The new improved flagship Shell Rimula R6 LM 10W-40 fully synthetic HDDEO is part of an enhanced portfolio and features Shell’s unique Dynamic Protection Plus Technology.

Dynamic Protection Plus Technology combines Shell’s proprietary PurePlus Technology, which produces an ultra-clean base oil made from natural gas, and Adaptive Additive Technology to deliver excellent all-weather protection, longer engine life, extended oil drain intervals and reduced fuel consumption, all of which ultimately helps customers to lower the total cost of ownership.

This latest innovation by Shell enables the new Rimula R6 LM to offer up to 53% better protection (compared with the revised more stringent MB 228.51 limit and measured in the Mercedes-Benz OM 646 LA engine test) against engine wear and deposits, especially cam wear as well as up to 45% lower oil consumption (compared with the Volvo VDS-4 limit as measured in the Mack T12 300h engine test).

The oil’s upgraded CJ-4 specification now exceeds ACEA, MAN and Mercedes-Benz specifications for engine wear and cleanliness to ensure extended oil drain intervals and lower emissions. Its low SAPs formulation also significantly reduces downtime from clogging of diesel particulate filters by ash. This means that the new Rimula R6 LM is especially recommended for highly rated engines meeting Euro 5 to 6 emission requirements.

Leslie Ng Shell Lubricants GM Malaysia & SingaporeShell Lubricants General Manager – Malaysia & Singapore, Mr Leslie Ng, said that the new enhanced Shell Rimula portfolio once again reflected Shell’s investment in R&D and its desire to offer cutting-edge lubricant products that deliver real and tangible benefits to businesses operating in an increasingly challenging economic environment.

“The enhanced formulations in the new Shell Rimula products provide an unprecedented level of protection to engines that operate in severe conditions. They are designed to help our customers reach their real destinations, no matter where or what they are,” he said.

In pointing out that no other oil and gas company invested in R&D as much as Shell, Leslie added, “Our revolutionary and proprietary gas-to-liquid technology has enabled us to be the first company to launch passenger car motor oils and motorcycle engine oils made from natural gas. We are now bringing this breakthrough technology to the HDDEO segment.”

The launch of the new Shell Rimula R6 LM with Dynamic Protection Plus Technology is timely as high quality Euro 5 standard diesel is becoming increasingly available in Malaysia. More truck and bus fleet owners can now upgrade to newer vehicles equipped with more advanced engines. Using fully synthetic HDDEOs will optimize the fuel efficiency, performance and reliability of these vehicles thus lowering operating costs.

In conjunction with the introduction of the new Shell Rimula portfolio, Shell Lubricants also launch the 2016 edition of the highly popular Shell Rimula Global Promotion. The contest has been rewarding Shell Rimula customers with money-can’t-buy experiences around the world; this year, the contest will take eight lucky Grand Prize winners to South Africa for a unique driving challenge.

Last year’s winners had the opportunity to visit Budapest, Hungary to experience the FIA European Truck Racing championship while the 2014 winners took part in a unique heavy equipment challenge in London.

The Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) was formed in 2014 as a team of technology and automotive companies with the goal of integrating the Android operating system into automobiles. It started off with Google, CloudCar, Audi, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai and Nvidia and subsequently joined by the likes of Bentley, Chevrolet, Infiniti, Mazda, Nissan, Renault, Subaru, Volvo as well as Freescale, Clarion, Continental, Harman, Magneti Marelli and Panasonic.

Mercedes-Benz Open Automotive AllianceThe list of members now have grown to 64 with a recent check of the Alliance’s website showing Mercedes-Benz as its latest member. Before this, two major German car manufacturers were missing from the alliance – BMW and Mercedes-Benz (Porsche is also not listed but separate members of the VW group are members). Their reluctance to join the alliance is due to privacy issues as Google had asked for information on vehicle owners. The inclusion of Mercedes-Benz into the OAA means the parties have settled on an agreement pertaining to information-sharing.

Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz has partnered with Apple to have its CarPlay system in selected Mercedes-Benz models for the US. Joining the OAA means that CarPlay will eventually be left out in favor of Android Auto. Mercedes-Benz (or rather Daimler AG) is also part of the consortium of automakers which bought Nokia’s HERE mapping system, together with Audi and BMW. How this will play out remains to be seen as Google will most likely want to push its own Maps and Waze apps to be incorporated into Android Auto.

Bosch has developed components for both mass commuter two-wheelers in Asia and high-performance bikes in Europe and North America

The Bosch Two-Wheeler and Powersports unit continues to gain momentum in the global motorcycle market. Since the business unit was founded in Japan in April 2015, sales of motorcycle technology have risen by more than 20 percent. By comparison, production volumes for motorized two-wheelers have grown by less than 5 percent over the same period.

This success is built on a broad product portfolio: The Two-Wheeler and Powersports unit is the leading supplier of motorcycle safety technology; its side view assist is the world’s first assistance system for motorcycles. In addition, the business unit supplies efficient injection technology as well as smart connectivity solutions and modern display instruments. Around the world, the unit’s 130 associates – three times as many as a year ago – can draw on a worldwide network of several thousand engineers, as well as on the manufacturing capacity of the Mobility Solutions business sector.

The unit is well positioned for the future. “In 2020, we want to achieve sales of one billion euros in motorcycle technology,” said Bosch management board member Dr. Dirk Hoheisel. In the future, Bosch will generate more than half these sales in Asia.

Almost 90 percent of all motorcycles are produced in Asia

Studies indicate that by 2021, the annual global production of two-wheelers should surpass 160 million – roughly one-third more than today. Almost 90 percent of these will be built in China, India, and Southeast Asia. They will predominantly be mopeds with up to 250 cc displacement – the most common form of transport across much of Asia.

“In emerging markets, motorized two-wheelers are often the least expensive way to get around,” said Klaus Landhaeusser, Bosch Malaysia General Manager of Automotive OE Sales Southeast Asia. In Asia, many two-wheelers with internal-combustion engines are still equipped with outdated carburetor technology. In contrast, Bosch offers its electronically controlled fuel-injection system, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 16 percent depending on the situation. This is just one of many ways Bosch is contributing towards lowering emissions in countries such as India.

Desire for efficiency and safety as a boost for business

Along with a requirement for more efficiency, demand for increased motorcycle safety is growing in emerging markets. In Thailand and Indonesia, for example, some 21,000 people die in motorcycle accidents each year.

“Malaysia has one of the highest road traffic fatalities in ASEAN and more than 60 percent of road accidents affect motorcyclists. Add that to the 18 fatalities per day that was recorded in 2015 as a result of road accidents, it is evident that immediate action is necessary to tackle this problem. Bosch has the technology to help reduce the number of road accidents not just in Malaysia, but globally as well,” Landhaeusser said.

ABS can prevent one-quarter of all motorcycle accidents that result in casualties. The antilock braking system stops the wheels from locking up, which means the rider remains in control of the motorcycle while braking. This enables riders to react more quickly and without fear in a dangerous situation. Worldwide, more and more countries are promoting motorcycle ABS.

Throughout the EU, all newly sold motorized two-wheelers with more than 125 cc displacement must be fitted with an antilock braking system as of 2017. Starting in October 2018, Japan will be mandating ABS for new type approvals for motorcycles with more than 125 cc. Brazil and Taiwan, too, have already passed laws mandating ABS in the future. The issue is also on the political agenda in India and the United States.

A product for each market: from ABS to side view assist

Since 1995, Bosch has manufactured more than two million motorcycle ABS units. This year the company is releasing ABS 10, a variant that is designed specifically to meet the requirements of emerging markets. With its compact dimensions and weighing just 450 grams, this system is easier for manufacturers to integrate into mopeds for price-sensitive customers.

“As we cannot put a cost on safety and because one life lost is one too many, we are bringing our ABS technology to all classes and markets,” said Landhaeusser. For high-performance motorbikes, demand for which is strongest in Europe, Japan, and North America, Bosch developed MSC motorcycle stability control – a kind of ESP for motorcycles – in 2013.

By monitoring two-wheeler parameters such as lean angle, the system can instantaneously adjust its electronic braking and acceleration interventions to suit the riding status. This prevents the bike from low-siding or righting itself when braking in bends. However, development does not stop there: with side view assist, Bosch has launched the world’s first assistance system for motorized two-wheelers. When changing lanes, the assistant uses ultrasonic sensors to check for danger in the areas on either side of the bike – areas that are hard for the rider to see.

Connected motorcycles are even safer

The future of the motorcycle is not only safe and clean but also connected.

Bosch has two motorcycle connectivity solutions in its portfolio. First, the ICC integrated connectivity cluster is a rider information system that connects motorcycles and smartphones and can be used to operate apps.

Second, Bosch uses its CCU connectivity control unit to connect motorcycles with the cloud. This makes it possible to implement functions such as eCall, the automatic emergency call service. If the motorcycle is involved in an accident, eCall automatically places an emergency call, ensuring help arrives more quickly. eCall is not yet mandatory for motorcycles in the EU, but from April 2018 it will be mandatory for all new type approvals for cars and light trucks up to 3.5 metric tons.

The CCU can also provide riders with useful information on issues such as potential danger spots on the roads and can help track down a stolen motorbike.
