L-R: Mr. Filip Van den Heede, Managing Director Hub Malaysia, UD Trucks; Mr. Tan Keng Meng, Executive Director, Tan Chong Industrial Equipment Sdn Bhd; Dato’ Tan Heng Chew, President, Tan Chong Motor Holdings Berhad; Mr. Håkan Karlsson, President, Volvo Group Trucks Asia & JVs; Dato’ Rosie Tan, Group Senior Executive Vice President, Tan Chong Motor Holdings Berhad; Mr. Jacques Michel, President, Volvo Group Trucks Asia Sales; and Mr. Wong King Yoon, Chief Executive Officer, Tan Chong Industrial Equipment Sdn Bhd

UD Trucks, and its sole distributor, Tan Chong Industrial Equipment (TCIE), have launched the Croner, an all-new medium-duty truck in Malaysia. UD Trucks first started in 1935 as Nihon Diesel Industries Ltd. UD once stood for “Uniflow Diesel”, a type of engine the company produced in 1955, with the ‘UD’ badge displayed on the front grille; the reputation of its engine’s reliability which turned ‘UD’ into “Ultimate Dependability”. In 1960, it changed its name to Nissan Diesel Motor Co. Ltd. The company then became a subsidiary of the Volvo Group in 2007 and subsequently changed its name to UD Trucks in 2010. Tan Chong Industrial Equipment (TCIE), the truck business arm of Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd (TCMH), has been distributing and selling Nissan Diesel trucks (and now UD Trucks) for almost 4 decades.

UD Trucks Croner Launch, Malaysia 2017 LKE 210The all-new UD Croner truck continues the brand’s Japanese legacy of building the “truck that the world needs today”, and is targeted to developing markets like Malaysia, with versatility, uptime and safety in mind. This truck range is designed for reliability and built with robust and quality components to deliver extra productivity and superior uptime, thus saving on time and maintenance which will lead to better productivity and profitability. Incidentally, Croner is named after Chronos, the Greek god of time, because it’s aimed to save the owner time.

UD Trucks has spent over 3 years of development and testing by its expert engineers who spent 1.7 million engineering hours and 30,000 hours of testing using 90 test rigs and over 100 test trucks to ensure the superior quality of Croner. The trucks were tested in various conditions and climates from the high altitudes of Peru to the heat of UAE to the challenging terrain of India. As a result, the Croner range is one of UD Trucks’ most fuel-efficient trucks ever. It combines the new GHE engine series, new (optional) automatic transmission and a new and more aerodynamic cab design allowing the Croner to reduce the coefficient of drag (CD), thus improving fuel efficiency.

UD Trucks Malaysia Croner Launch, TCIEThe Croner comes in 2 gross vehicle weight (GVW) models in Malaysia i.e. LKE (GVW 14.5 tons) and PKE (GVW 18.5 tons). The Croner LKE is fitted with GH5E-210 Euro 3 5-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces 210 hp and 825 Nm, while the Croner PKE uses the GH8E-250 8-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine that produces 250 hp and 950 Nm. The LKE has a 2.1-meter sleeper cab while the PKE gets a slightly larger 2.3-meter one. The Croner is offered in a wide range of wheelbase variants to suit a wide range of configurations, such as dumpster, tipper and box, to meet specific demands of various industries.

UD Trucks Croner Launch, Clutch Slide, Tan Chong Industrial Equipment, Malaysia 2017Locally, the Croner run a 6-speed manual transmission but a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission is available as an option (RM 40,000) for all models of Croner, providing ease of drive, safety and less strenuous driving experience especially for long-haul drivers. It might seem counter-intuitive but in a fleet, the automatic transmission helps to save operating cost by averaging out the fuel consumption due to the different driving styles of the truck drivers, as well as reduce driver fatigue which means higher uptime.

The Croner also comes with a full air braking system (including ABS) with reliable S-cam drum brakes, to increase safety and reliability. The ABS system used in UD trucks is also equipped with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) which helps avoid over-braking of the rear axle and limit the brake pressure based on the wheel. Additionally, the optional air suspension on PKE model is available to protect fragile cargo especially on rough road conditions.

UD Trucks customers will also be supported by UD Extra Mile Support services which includes UD Genuine Service and Parts, UD Driver Training and UD Trust Service Agreements for customers.

To celebrate the launch of Croner, TCIE is offering rebates of RM 10,000 for every Croner booking, until August 31, 2017. Additionally, customers who purchase Croner can also enjoy full 100% financing. This financing offer is valid until December 31, 2017 or while stocks last (subject to terms and conditions).

At the same time, UD Trucks also introduced UD Telematics, its remote monitoring system. All Croner trucks are factory-fitted with this system which keeps you updated on your fleet in real-time. UD Telematics will provide the customer with location tracking, fuel reports, and vehicle health status, with service reminders, remote diagnostics and breakdown quick assistance. This systems aims to keep your fleet safe, and save you on running costs. It is offered free for the first year and costs RM 90 a month subsequently.

UD Trucks Croner Launch, Tan Keng Meng TCIE, MalaysiaAt the launch, Tan Keng Meng, Executive Director, Tan Chong Industrial Equipment Sdn Bhd said, “This year, Tan Chong Group is celebrating its 60th anniversary. With 60 years of success in the automotive business and as an industry pioneer, we could not be more honored of what we have achieved today. As the sole distributor of UD Trucks in Malaysia ever since TCIE started, I would like to say that we are very glad to have contributed to the growth of the brand to where it is today, a highly visible and trusted Japanese name in the Malaysian truck industry. Celebrating another milestone, we truly welcome the launch of Croner, as it will undoubtedly further strengthen our product offerings and establish a stronger presence for our businesses.”

Håkan Karlsson, President of Volvo Group Trucks Asia & JVs, UD Croner Launch Malaysia 2017“Croner’s superiority comes from the best of three worlds – UD Trucks’ Japanese heritage and craftsmanship, Volvo Group’s strong global technology and safety principle, and Tan Chong Industrial Equipment’s deep local knowledge and resources as our highly valued local partner,” said Håkan Karlsson, President of Volvo Group Trucks Asia & JVs.

“Our goal is to build the truck that the world needs today, and in doing this successfully for Croner, we’ve also taken into consideration the feedback and experience that we’ve received since the introduction of our heavy-duty Quester truck range and incorporate it into the design and built of the all-new Croner. I am confident that Croner will bring our customers the efficiency and success they want, in any application,” added Karlsson.

Toshihiko Odawara, Vice President, Product Management, UD Trucks, Croner Launch Malaysia 2017“UD Trucks has engineered Croner to help customers do well through the simple concept of saving time. UD Trucks believes that by engineering a robust and versatile truck, vehicle downtime can be greatly minimized, leading to more business efficiency and productivity for customers,” said Toshihiko Odawara, Vice President, Product Management, UD Trucks.

Odawara also pointed out, “Safety is a very important aspect to UD Trucks, and as such, the all-new Croner is equipped with superior braking and handling features to keep drivers and fleets in prime condition. Designed with good level of passive safety in the event of an accident, the reinforced cabin also ensures safety and extra durability to the driver even under rough road conditions.”

“The all-new Croner not only enhance safety for the driver but also for other on-the-road users, as it is equipped with Front Underrun Protection (FUP) that prevents passenger cars from being wedged under the truck in the event of a frontal collision,” he added.

“With an extensive network of 43 service centers and dealerships throughout Malaysia, TCIE will continue to play a major role in providing key support to UD Trucks and customers. TCIE and UD Trucks have shared a unique and solid partnership in building the landscape of Malaysia’s commercial vehicle industry, and the launch of Croner today further reinforces this relationship. We certainly look forward to a continued growth together,” commented Tan.

L-R: ZF Sales & Service (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, General Manager (Malaysia, Taiwan & Brunei), Mr. Cheah Chee Luen; General Manager of OE Sales & Service and Head of Partner Management Asia Pacific Region, Mr. Siew Chee Kok; Managing Director, Encik Mohd Syahrul Yusuf; ZF Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, Head Of Services (ASEAN), Mr. Low Chen Lon; and ZF Services Hong Kong Limited, Technical Consultant (Openmatics), Mr. Eric Fok with the AVE 130 electric axle.

Little is known of ZF by the general public except that it’s a German brand working mostly behind the scenes as a parts supplier, such as supplying gearboxes to BMW. Thus the 15th anniversary of ZF Sales and Service (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd was a good occasion for the company to shout a little about what they do and why they’re here in Malaysia.

ZF Malaysia BrandsThe ZF Group currently employs over 490 staff in Malaysia for its 6 local companies – ZF Sales and Service (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, TRW Automotive Services Sdn Bhd, TRW Asiatic (M) Sdn Bhd, and ZF Chassis Systems Sdn Bhd, Lucas Automotive Sdn Bhd and Lucas Varity (M) Sdn. Bhd; and owns these familiar aftermarket brands – SACHS, LEMFÖRDER, TRW, BOGE, and OPENMATICS (the last one we’ll touch on in more detail).

ZF Sales and Service (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (ZFSSM) has been busy with more than just distributing aftermarket parts like SACHS shock absorbers for Proton and Perodua vehicles; it has also been working on helping to modernize our public transportation, supplying rail shock absorbers to Rapid KL as well as its EcoLife transmission for public buses.

ZF Sales & Service (Malaysia), ZF EcoLife, Mr Siew Chee KokZFSSM had recently equipped 300 Scania and Volvo MRT city feeder buses with the ZF EcoLife which is a high-performance 6-speed automatic transmission for buses. These buses serve the new mass rapid transit line between Sungai Buloh to Kajang. There are in total, more than 900 city buses in Malaysia equipped with ZF EcoLife transmissions.

The ZF EcoLife transmission allows easier driving conditions for line service buses and coach drivers. The automatic transmission is available in 7 versions, with input torque range from 1,000 to 2,300 Nm, ensuring an efficient and powerful drive in buses up to 32 tons gross vehicle weight.

With its intelligent drive program by TopoDyn Life control software, the ZF EcoLife adapts driving conditions and smoothly adjusts the gearshift strategy for the driving route during travel. This results in improved fuel efficiency. Further, its integrated primary retarder in the vehicle’s brake management system supports high braking power even at low speeds, effectively reducing the strain on the vehicle’s service brakes, ultimately extending the part’s life-cycle. In addition to reduced downtime and longer service life, these city buses will also have reduced carbon emissions.

ZF EcoLife Transmission Diagnostics, ZF Sales & Service Malaysia“Urban centers face demand for commercial vehicles that are reliable, safe and most importantly, cost effective and productive. Sustainable urbanization will be a challenge as automotive industry requires vehicles to have low operating costs given the high intensity of vehicle usage without compromising safety and speed. ZFSSM intends to be the enabler for the Malaysian transport network by lending our expertise to modernize urban transport backed by ZF Group’s innovative products and technologies,” explained General Manager of Business Unit Services, Mr Siew Chee Kok.

ZF Sales & Service Malaysia, ZF EcoLife Transmission Maintenance & Servicing“As the second largest aftermarket organization in the automotive suppliers segment in the world, we are a service-oriented partner that includes spare parts business, technical information and training, re-manufacturing, repair and fleet services for owners. Our core strength lies in our high quality and competent products, while ensuring minimal downtimes and service orientation for customers in the Original Equipment (OE) aftermarket and workshop business,” Siew said.

ZFSSM is also currently collaborating with Rapid Penang to equip its city buses with ZF EcoLife for preventive overhaul. Preventive overhaul allows for significant extension to the vehicles service life
without compromising safety or cost efficiency.

ZF Sales & Service Malaysia, Openmatics BriefingA new ZF product ZFSSM is introducing in Malaysia is OPENMATICS, a connected fleet management solution. OPENMATICS is meant to provide a more efficient service of fleet management, asset tracking, vehicle diagnosis, engineering as well as entertainment and multimedia applications. OPENMATICS is an innovative telematics solution that allows fleet management to be transparent, thus avoiding driving without loads, taking into account driving and rest periods in route planning and monitoring fuel consumption. It can be applied to the fleet regardless of vehicle make.

ZF Openmatics Tag, ZF Sales & Service MalaysiaThe OPENMATICS Asset Tracking solution enables tracking and monitoring of valuable assets allowing for efficient and modern logistics as well as manufacturing optimization. The tracking works on Bluetooth technology and the Smart TAGs can be easily installed anywhere, whether on transport containers, pallets, swap bodies or the cargo itself. One useful application of these tags is for cargo that is sensitive to humidity and temperature changes. These tags can be used for up to 5 years before being recycled by OPENMATICS.

Compatible with existing telematics hardware and the OPENMATICS’ stationary “TAG” finder, OPENMATICS is an intuitive operation that is easily accessible through mobile application (Google Play or Apple Store) and a web portal. Capable of communicating wirelessly in an area of at least 30 meters, users can receive real-time alerts which enables prevention of loss or damage of goods. This allows for efficient tracking of assets while decreasing costs for administration and communication efforts while minimizing logistics and manufacturing processes.

ZF AVE 130 Electric Axle, ZF Sales & Service Malaysia 15th AnniversaryZFSSM is currently working with Rapid KL to implement OPENMATICS for prototype testing in its fleet. This allows for greater integration of communication and logistics between the buses and its suppliers while minimizing operational costs. Additionally, ZFSSM is collaborating with Sync R & D Sdn Bhd, to develop a locally-made 12-meter public electric bus that’s equipped with ZF’s AVE 130 electric portal axle, for higher engine speed and larger passenger space.

Siew stated that ZFSSM is looking at the long-term and is committed to continue enhancing its service network development and the OPENMATICS system in Malaysia while increasing its efforts in introducing e-mobility to the automotive industry, with the aim of supporting the country’s ambition to become a EEV hub for the region.

If you find the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan too staid and think you’re too young for it, or if you think 4 doors on a car is a waste of hinges, then consider the new E-Class Coupé. Launched in Malaysia recently, the new E-Class Coupé is available in 2 variants and a limited edition trim. The E 200 Coupé AMG Line starts the ball rolling at RM 435,888 (on the road without insurance), followed by the E 300 Coupé AMG Line at RM 499,888; the limited edition (only 555 such units worldwide) E 300 Coupé Edition 1 is priced at RM 534,888.

2017 E 200 Coupe Agility Financing MalaysiaBy using the Agility Financing hire purchase scheme provided by Mercedes-Benz Financial, you can have a E 200 Coupé at RM 5,701 a month – this is based on a 3-year tenure, 10% downpayment and 20,000 km usage per year; monthly payments will vary depending on the desired terms e.g. you can opt for higher annual mileage or a longer tenure, so do check with your Mercedes-Benz Sales Advisor.

Bear in mind that we are not saying it’s cheap to own a car, what more a premium one. But Agility Financing 2017 E 200 Coupe Conventional Bank Financingis a relatively cheaper alternative to the conventional car loans one would normally apply for. Unless you get preferential rates, bank financing for a E 200 Coupé will cost approximately double that of Agility Financing (based on an assumed 3% interest rate, but the same 3-year tenure and 10% downpayment). On the upside, the bank will not make you promise a predetermined annual mileage.

The predetermined annual mileage is required in Agility Financing (you can take it as high as 30,000 km per annum) because Mercedes-Benz Malaysia provides a guaranteed future value for your car (which is inversely related to usage and wear & tear). At the end of the financing tenure you can opt to settle the financing, extend it or return the car to Mercedes-Benz, and go for a newer model. So if your ownership requirements jive with that of Agility Financing, then it’s a viable financing option.

Here are some key features of the E-Class Coupé:

  • 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 9G-Tronic automatic transmission
  • 4,826 mm long (+123 mm); 1,860 mm wide (+74 mm); 1,430 mm tall (+33 mm) (vs its predecessor)
  • Agility Control suspension with passive, selective damping; 15 mm lower than E-Class sedan.

The final driving skills round of the inaugural Scania Driver Competitions (SDC) Southeast Asia 2016/17, held earlier this month at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS), saw 19 drivers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Singapore compete for the best driver title in the bus and truck categories. Both categories were ultimately won by Malaysian drivers – Law Cheok Gheen of Zulco Sdn Bhd (bus) and Sarveswaren Srues A/L Ram of Air Products Sdn Bhd (truck).

The Scania Driver Competitions have been going on since 2003 and have seen participation from more than 350,000 truck drivers in nearly 50 countries, making it the world’s largest truck and bus driving event. SDC focuses on increasing road-safety awareness, improving fuel consumption and minimizing the environmental impact of commercial vehicles. It also aims to elevate the status and prestige of heavy commercial vehicle drivers by recognizing the true heroes – the drivers themselves. The SDC was previously a localized competition here and this is the first time a regional edition is held; which makes it more challenging now as it comes with tougher rules and scenarios, not to mention stiffer competition.

Scania Driver Competitions Southeast Asia 2016-2017 Malaysia, Knock The Cone & BoardwalkThe truck drivers were tested using a Scania G410LA6x2MSZ attached to a trailer carrying a 20ft container, while the bus drivers used the Scania Marcopolo K410IB4x2 coach. The final round tested their driving and maneuvering abilities with such tasks as the ‘Knock the Cone’ precision test (only a specific cone out of a group of 3 can be knocked down) and the ‘Boardwalk’ obstacle test, where they have to do a slalom in reverse and then position and drive the vehicle over planks. I had a brief run with the Marcopolo coach and while it is easy to drive, it takes precision and a different kind of judgment than driving a car due to its length and the fact that you’re seated forward of the front axle. I am also confident that I’m in no way capable of properly doing a slalom with it in Reverse gear, so great respect to all the drivers who made it to the final round; they’re really top-notch.

Scania Driver Competitions Southeast Asia 2016-2017 Winners & Finalists Bus Category, MAEPS MalaysiaThe winners each went home with RM 10,000 cash, a Challenge Trophy and a certificate. Law Cheok Gheen, winner of the bus/coach category, is actually a manager at Zulco Sdn Bhd (which operates the Aeroline coach service) who also trains the drivers in the company. “I need to know the actual situations that the drivers face, to have the proper mindset, so this win adds to my credibility and closes the gap for me both as a trainer and a manager when I advise them on how to be safer and more cost efficient,” he said.

Scania Driver Competitions Southeast Asia 2016-2017 Winners & Finalists Truck Category, MAEPS MalaysiaThe truck category winner, Sarveswaren Srues A/L Ram of Air Products Sdn Bhd, described his win as a huge surprise, but was nonetheless thrilled with the victory. “What I learned from this competition is the importance of being focused when being inside a vehicle and on the road, to be aware to be aware of your surroundings and also plan or strategize your journey. It has definitely made me understand and appreciate the importance of safe driving,” he added.

Enrollment for this competition started in 2016 with more than 1,000 drivers from all over the region tested in the elimination rounds on their knowledge of road transport laws and regulations, alternative fuels, fuel-efficient and safe driving, load securing, occupational risks and health, and emergency procedures. Hence, getting to the finals of the SDC is one of the ultimate achievements for many of the experienced drivers as the competition also a represents the professionalism required in the industry.

“We have seen an increasing interest in the SDC and that is a good indication that it has been a catalyst in getting heavy commercial vehicle drivers to upgrade their skills and that means safer drivers, safer conditions for all road users and better fuel economy for operators,” said Marie Sjödin Enström, Managing Director of Scania Southeast Asia.

The SDC was sponsored by Michelin (M) Sdn Bhd, and supported by Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya (JKJR), Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia (JPJ) and the Embassy of Sweden.

Junaidah and her Volvo Truck

Shah Alam, 16 August 2017 – Thos who think that lady drivers are no good will have to do a re-think – this story isabout one lady driver, and a truck driver at that, who bucked the trend and beat other male drivers to qualify as a finalist in Volvo Trucks Malaysia’s Fuelwatch Challenge.

It all started five years ago, when a plucky young 27 year old girl decided to try her hand at driving a truck,  liked it, and and decided that it would be her career despite the occupation being dominated by men. Today, Junaidah Ibrahim works alongside her husband who also drives a truck for the same company, Benua Haulage Sdn Bhd, part of Sin Hock soon Group.

Junaidah puts in around eight to nine hours a day driving her Volvo truck to ensure that goods are delivered to customers on time. However, this doting mother of three children stresses that being extra careful while driving on the road is her utmost priority in the job as she has a family to go back to at the end of the day.

Registering as a participant in the Volvo Trucks Malaysia’s annual Fuelwatch Challenge which returned to Malaysia for the eighth consecutive year, Junaidah took part in the preliminary round in Prai and has secured a place in the finals. She believes that her focus on the task at hand and her driving skills helped her to outperform many of the male truck drivers.

Junaidahhas created history for beingthe very first female truck driver to qualify for the finals in the Volvo Trucks Malaysia’s Fuelwatch Challenge, and this year, the finals shall be held in Shah Alam on 24th and 25th August , 2017.

Junaidah is also popular among her customers who are pleased not only with her professionalism but are also impressed to see a female truck driver appearing at their doorsteps.

FW2017_03Commenting on her truck driving job, Junaidah Bte Ibrahim said, “I am the only female truck driver in my company and I couldn’t be more proud of my job despite the fact that truck driving is known to be a male-dominated profession. The support that I get from my husband, who is also my colleague, and the confidence my employer and customers have in me are indeed very encouraging. I’m glad to have found my niche and have proved that gender stereotyping can definitely be broken.”

Apart from being a female truck driver, which is an already extremely rare case in Malaysia, unlike in some Western countries where there is a higher ratio of female drivers, Junaidah also towers above her male peers in terms of license qualification. She has both rigid and container truck driving licenses, which is not the norm even amongst the general population of male truck drivers.

FW2017_07Junaidah will be competing with seven other male finalists in the final round of Volvo Fuelwatch Challenge 2017 in Shah Alam on 26th August, including attending a special training session by a Volvo Trucks’ Driver Trainer to further enhance their skills.

The other seven male finalists are Ruslan Ab Ghani from Perwakilan Cekap Sdn Bhd (Port Klang), Jamal B. Embong from Prifaria Sdn Bhd (Kuantan), Ahmad Sulaiman from Konsortium PD Sdn Bhd (Port Klang), Mohd Sufian bin Sahari from Multimodal Freight Sdn Bhd (Port Klang), Kaspul Anwar bin Abdul Karim from Prifaria Sdn Bhd (Prai), Tan Eng Hin from Lima Bintang Logistics Sdn Bhd (Prai) and Firdausbin Salim from Swift Logistics Sdn Bhd (Johor Bahru).

The champion will have the opportunity to represent Malaysia and participate in the Drivers Fuel Challenge – World Final in Sweden from 18th to 22nd September 2017, that judges and more importantly, teaches skill, concentration, knowledge, and discipline.

FW2017_04“I’m absolutely pleased to be the first female truck driver in Malaysia to take part in the final round of Volvo Fuelwatch Challenge. The Challenge is a great platform for us, regardless of gender, to prove that we can perform at the highest level if we apply the right skills. And of course, it will be such a great achievement for all women out there if I can win the trophy, fingers crossed!”, said Junaidah.

The competition, which first started in Europe as a concept for achieving maximum efficiency, is moduled based on local market demands and industry landscape; for Malaysia it will mainly concentrate on three key areas; Driver Development, Fuel Maintenance and Dynafleet or Telematics.

Sinceits commencement in Malaysia in 2010, the Volvo Fuelwatch Challenge has so far mentored more than 6,000 truck drivers from all over the country on how to enhance their driving competency and behaviour to be more fuel efficient and safer drivers on the roads. The number of truck drivers who participated in this year’s competition saw an increase of 19% compared to last year.

We at autoworld.com.my wish Junaidah all the best in the forthcoming competition! Show the world what you can do!
