L-R: Mr Dennis Ho, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors (Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan); Datuk Aishah Ahmad, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd; Tuan Syed Khalil Syed Ibrahim, Managing Director of SISMA Auto Group and Tuan Syed Ahmad Muzri bin Syed Faiz, Operations Director Jaguar Land Rover (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd with the newly launched Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic variant.

After some teasing, the new Range Rover Velar has been unveiled with three variants available i.e. Velar P250 (RM529,800) and Velar P250 R-Dynamic (RM588,800), as well as the Velar P380 R-Dynamic (RM not confirmed). Prices quoted exclude registration, road tax and insurance.

Range Rover Velar P250 2.0L Ingenium Turbocharged EngineThe Velar P250 variants are equipped with the 2.0L Ingenium turbocharged engine. The 250 PS and 365 Nm of torque produced by this engine goes to the four wheels via an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox (with paddle shifters) and Intelligent Driveline Dynamics system. 0 – 100 km/h acceleration can be achieved in 6.7 seconds while average fuel consumption is claimed at 7.6 litres / 100 km.

If that doesn’t sound fast enough, you can always place an order for the Velar P380 R-Dynamic which comes with a 3.0L supercharged V6 engine that boasts 380 PS and 450 Nm of torque, and is capable of doing the 0 – 100 in 5.7 seconds. It will set you back 9.4 litres / 100 km.

The Velar is built with an aluminium-intensive monocoque using Jaguar Land Rover’s Lightweight Aluminium Architecture. Aluminium alloys make up for over 81% of the body-in- white, an amount still unmatched by any competitor. This allows for a lighter yet stiff body.

Range Rover Velar Launch MalaysiaThe Velar is also winner of the Car Design Of The Year at the 2018 World Car Awards courtesy of its progressive and uncluttered design which includes features like the flush deployable door handles, integrated rear spoiler, foil stamped grille, and Matrix LED headlights.

On the inside, one of the stand-out features is the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system which has two 10″ high definition touchscreens integrated behind secret-until-lit surfaces to give the interior a more modern minimalist look. With two screens, the Touch Pro Duo allows for multitasking e.g. you can make a call without interrupting the onboard navigation.

Other features include the large 12.3″ Interactive Driver Display which has changeable display themes and full-screen 3D navigation; Meridian surround sound system with 17 speakers and subwoofer; 10-way powered driver seat with memory; powered rear seat backrest; dual zone climate control; configurable ambient lighting; Morzine headlining; perforated grained leather seats; lockable glove box; and powered gesture tailgate.

Safety and driving features include Terrain Response with six settings – Comfort, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud and Ruts, Sand, ECO and Dynamic Mode; Hill Descent Control; Dynamic Stability Control; Intelligent High Beam Assist; rear view camera; auto dimming and heated exterior mirrors with approach lights; six airbags; tyre pressure monitoring system.

Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic, MalaysiaThe R-Dynamic variant swaps out some of the standard features for R-Dynamic exterior pack and badging; leather steering with chrome bezel; satin chrome paddle shifters; head-up display; Shadow Aluminium trim finisher; perforated grained leather and suede cloth seats; bright metal pedals; surround view camera; and a panoramic sunroof. It also replaces the standard 20″ 7-spoke Style 7014 wheels with 21″ 10-spoke Style 1033 in Satin Dark Grey.

Meanwhile, the Velar P380 R-Dynamic will include electronic air suspension; adaptive cruise control with queue assist; and extended full leather upgrade.

Buyers can also choose the option of replacing the perforated grained leather with Kvadrat highly durable wool-blend premium textile contrasted with Suede cloth. Kvadart is Europe’s leading manufacturer of high-quality design textiles and the use of its textile in the Velar is unique to luxury SUVs of this segment.

Range Rover Velar P250 R-Dynamic, Rear View, MalaysiaThe Velar is available in eight exterior colours – Fuji White, Yulong White, Corris Grey, Santorini Black, Kaikoura Stone, Firenze Red, Silicon Silver and Carpathian Grey; five interior colour options of Ebony/Ebony, Acorn, Vintage Tan/Ebony, Eclipse/Ebony and Light Oyster/Ebony.

Designed and engineered at Jaguar Land Rover’s development centres in the UK, the Velar is manufactured at the company’s Solihull production facility.

Mercedes-Benz C 350 e EQ Power showcasing outside Pavilion KL - CopyWhat is Mercedes-Benz EQ? Here’s a clue: It’s not (solely) the Concept EQ concept vehicle it has been showcasing. Rather, EQ is a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz, much like AMG and Maybach. “EQ” is derived from the Mercedes-Benz brand values of emotion and intelligence and basically represents the brand’s intelligent electric mobility.

The brand’s first foray into electric mobility in Malaysia began with the launch of the locally produced flagship Mercedes-Benz S400h, followed by the E300 Bluetec hybrid, and then the C350e and E350e plug-in hybrid sedans.

With the official launch of the EQ brand in Malaysia, the current C350e and E350e will no longer carry the ‘Plug-in Hybrid’ badge but will be redesignated as ‘EQ Power’. EQ Power is the company’s stepping stone to EQ which is reserved for its future range of full electric vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz EQ Power Launch, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur“It is a rare and proud moment for us that we are able to introduce an all-new brand under the Mercedes-Benz portfolio which includes Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach. We believe that the EQ brand will take us forward into the future of mobility with emphasis and innovation in connectivity, autonomous drive capabilities and shared services. With this, we reaffim that Mercedes-Benz is, and always will be, the pioneering brand in the automotive industry as we have been since we invented the automobile over 130 years ago,” said Mercedes-Benz Malaysia President and CEO, Dr Claus Weidner.

“By launching the EQ brand led by our technology leaders and range-topping EQ Power C350e and E350e plug-in hybrid automobiles, we are able to create something highly emotional. The thrill of immediate acceleration with the sustainability of efficient energy consumption. To us, electric mobility is more than an alternative drivetrain. The EQ brand is our technology calling card for customer-focused electric mobility. It extends beyond the vehicle itself to an ecosystem designed to deliver the best value, convenience and luxury to our customers and fans,” said Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, Sales & Marketing, Vice President, Mark Raine.

Mercedes-Benz EQ Power Charging Station, Pavilion Kuala LumpurBut EQ is more than just a brand for vehicles. It also represents Mercedes-Benz’s electric mobility solution, and this includes Mercedes-Benz-branded charging stations (which will now be converted to EQ charging stations). As part of the company’s support for the EEV initiative in Malaysia, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has established a charging station network for the convenience of plug-in hybrid owners (other brands’ plug-in hybrids are also free to use this network, subject to fair usage). Currently, its charging stations are located in Bangsar Shopping Centre, Sunway Pyramid, Desa Parkcity and Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. According to the company, more locations are planned and will be announced in due course.

Mercedes-Benz EQ Power buyers will receive a complimentary charging card for a year’s worth of free usage. For a more convenient and comprehensive charging network for its customers, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is also riding on GreenTech Malaysia’s ChargEV network.

Aside from the charging solution, Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia is also introducing the EQ Agility Care package for added value and peace-of-mind throughout the ownership experience with your EQ Power C350e or EQ Power E350e. For an ownership tenure of over three to five years, customers will enjoy scheduled vehicle maintenance and servicing along with an EQ Power charging wallbox packaged with their new EQ Power C350e and EQ Power E350e over the same period. With this package, the Mercedes-Benz Financial range of products expands further, enabling you to plan and project plug-in hybrid electric vehicle running costs over time.

Michelin Malaysia has introduced the latest Michelin LTX Force all-terrain tyre that is targeted at the growing SUV and 4×4 market. Michelin touts the LTX Force as a versatile tyre, possessing the ability to tackle tough conditions off-road yet be comfortable and quiet on the road.

Michelin LTX Force All-Terrain Tyre Off Road Course, MalaysiaAlthough it is marketed as an all-terrain tyre (AT), the LTX Force has a more on-road bias than some other all-terrain tyres, allowing it to behave similarly to highway tyres (HT) in terms of ride comfort and tyre noise levels. This is due to the adoption of Michelin’s CushionGuard technology which utilises a layer of special filtering rubber to absorb road imperfections and minimise vibrations. Its use of a rounded sloping edge design Michelin calls BevelTread also helps reduce tyre noise. Additionally, for better grip and enhanced driving safety, the tyre has reinforcements between the tread blocks to increase contact surface for better traction. These tiny reinforcements (CompacTread technology) reduce the chances of the tread blocks deforming and compacting, especially when braking, thereby ensuring optimal contact area for grip.

Michelin LTX Force All-Terrain Tyre Close Up, MalaysiaThe CompacTread characteristic also helps with off-road traction and is one of the tyre designs Michelin brought over from its experience in the World Rally Championship (WRC), along with the RallyForce rubber compound for better wear resistance. In addition to that there is the BitingShoulder design for better off-road grip as well as cut-chip resistance. This design features a deep and open shoulder design that provides a large biting surface with an extra 1.5mm thickness in the rubber for additional biting force as well as cut resistance.

Michelin Off-Road Days_04 - LTX ForceTo demonstrate these properties of the LTX Force, Michelin pitted it against its more extreme all-terrain sister tyre, the BFGoodrich T/A KO2, in the off-road section. While in the road test, the LTX Force was compared to a rival brand’s latest tyre. Both tests were done with identical vehicles for a fairer comparison i.e. Toyota Fortuner for off-road, and Toyota Hilux for on-road.

The off-road obstacle course involved climbing in and out of a water-logged mud rut, descending and ascending a 35° dirt slope, elephant steps, driving along a side slope (to showcase lateral grip), traversing a rocky path, and climbing a muddy slope before descending it.

BFGoodrich TA KO2 All Terrain Tyre, MalaysiaAs expected, the BFGoodrich T/A KO2 passed with flying colours. The KO2 uses tougher sidewall rubber, up to 4.5 mm thicker, to resist cuts and splits; it also has a thicker, extended shoulder as well as an advanced deflection sidewall design to reduce tyre failure in extreme off-road conditions. The tread rubber is also specially formulated for gravel road endurance and the tread blocks have an interlocking design for better stability and wear. The stone ejector design between the blocks also prevent stone retention which can harm the tyre. Further, off-road traction is gained with a serrated shoulder design and side biter lugs. The mud-phobic bars also help to release compacted mud and ensure optimal grip.

In comparison, the Michelin LTX Force took to the same course and conditions and performed nearly as well as the KO2. It wasn’t as effortless as the KO2 but it wasn’t far behind.

Michelin LTX Force Tyre, Toyota Hilux SlalomFor the road test, the LTX Force was put through a slalom course, a comfort trial, as well as a dry and wet braking. The slalom once again highlighted the high level of grip possessed by the LTX Force, compared to a competitor’s latest tyre. With the LTX Force, your hands are less busy with steering input to get the Hilux around the cones. Entry and exit speed around the cones were also a little faster with the LTX Force.

The comfort test had the Hilux driving over triangle strips and while it isn’t easy to discern the tyre noise intrusion into the cabin for either brand of tyres, the noise from the LTX Force sounded more muted. The bounce experienced by the passengers when the Hilux is driving over the strips is also less apparent than the rival tyre. Overall, this will provide for a more comfortable and quieter ride experience.

In the braking test that is tracked by GPS, the LTX Force consistently recorded stopping distances about a metre shorter than the rival tyre.

The Michelin LTX Force is available for wheel sizes 15″ to 18″ and retails from RM550 per piece. It is available at TYREPLUS car service outlets, MICHELIN EXPERT CENTRES and authorised dealers nationwide.

Since Geely’s acquisition of 49.9% of the company, Proton has been kept busy with reorganising its operations, including bringing in experienced talent from the automotive industry. As after-sales is just as important as sales, the new management team of Proton wasted no time in making improvements. Centred around uplifting its brand value, Proton aims to have 109 3S/4S centres as part of its 180-degree approach in fulfilling customer satisfaction and ownership experience. This is also to prepare its sales and service network for the first Proton SUV, a premium segment offering which will be coming in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Proton Management and Dealers group photo, MalaysiaWithin three months of the company announcing its incentive scheme to dealers to upgrade as well as to recruit new 3S/4S dealers, Proton had received 170 applications for this scheme. So far, 66 applications have been evaluated and approved while the rest are in the process of evaluation. The company is confident of reaching its targeted upgrades for 2018 in time for the new SUV launch. And beyond that, Proton has another phase of upgrades until 2020.

One of Proton’s major initiatives is the enhancement the overall product quality of the current range of Proton models. The adoption of Geely’s product quality audit scoring system, which was derived from the system used by Volvo Cars, has helped to identify issues and resulted in a strengthening of audit scores across all models. More initiatives can be expected this year, according to the company, as it strives to build cars of better quality to match other global manufacturers.

We are aware that all this looks good on paper, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Thus, the impending launch of its first SUV will serve as a litmus test for Proton where quality of product, sales and after-sales are concerned. It will not be surprising that everyone in Proton is sprouting some gray hair, or losing it.

Geely Boyue Dashboard, Proton Malaysia 2017The upcoming Proton SUV is touted to have very up-to-date features such as smart voice recognition, 360-degree 3D camera, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency brake assist, just to name a few.

Proton has been busy building interest in the yet-to-be-named SUV (there’s a contest for this) by sending out test models to selected Proton dealerships and vendors for the public to get a closer look.

Judging by how well the third generation Perodua Myvi is selling, owners of the previous generation Myvi might be concerned that Perodua will focus its production capacity on the new and neglect the old. But fear not as the company has given its assurance that it remains committed to supporting its customers.

Looking on is IQM Executive Director En Aidil Azlan Mohd Fitri (back, middle) and IQM Group Business and Marketing General Manager En Azrai Ramli (back, right).

Hence Perodua has outsourced a new parts production line for the second generation Myvi to one of its vendors, IQM Sdn Bhd. This production line is located in IQM’s facility in Proton City, Tanjung Malim and produces body components such as hoods, doors, fenders, quarter panels and roofs.

“For our customers’ safety, convenience and peace-of- mind, we are giving our commitment to them that we will continue to produce high-quality and affordable parts for their Perodua vehicles,” said Mr Takahashi Masanori, Perodua Auto Corporation Sdn Bhd President, at the Myvi Service Parts Line official opening last week.

The Myvi Service Parts Line at IQM Tanjung Malim will produce only body components for the time being, owing to high demand for such parts. Engine parts for the second generation Myvi will continue to be produced on a one-shot basis at Perodua’s own PMSB facility in Rawang; other parts are currently produced by various vendors.

“We elected to outsource parts production for the second-generation Myvi because our manufacturing plants are already at peak capacity. Being already a manufacturer of Viva parts since production of the model ended in 2014, IQM was a natural choice for this project,” he explained.

Perodua Myvi Service Parts Line, IQM Sdn BhdIQM is a supplier of metal stamping, body assembly parts and brake tube components to Perodua and began manufacturing service parts for the Perodua Viva in 2014, as production of the model ended. Viva parts are still being produced today at IQM’s Tanjung Malim facility.

Besides the second-generation Myvi and the Viva, original parts for the first-generation Myvi, Kelisa and even the Kancil are still being produced by vendors in Malaysia, so it should allay any concerns of the difficulty in sourcing for parts.

Perodua Myvi Hemming Line, Service Parts, IQM Sdn Bhd, Takahashi Masanori, President Perodua Auto Corp“There remain a great many users of the second-generation Myvi, of which over 519,000 were produced from May 2011 to October 2017. This is an endorsement by Malaysians and we take this trust seriously,” Mr Takahashi said.

“IQM Sdn Bhd has been a vendor of Perodua’s since 2002. Over the years, Perodua and IQM have built a strong relationship based on trust, quality and absolute never-ending loyalty to our customers,” said IQM Executive Director Aidil Azlan Mohd Fitri.
