The Iskandar Malaysia Regional Development Authority (IRDA) has started a pilot testing programme for a bus rapid transit system (BRT). This pilot test will run for three months using electric and biodiesel-based green technology buses from nine local and international bus suppliers.
The pilot project will test the capabilities of the buses as well as the use of green technology on the suitability to modernise the public transport system in Johor. IRDA and related agencies will also conduct assessments, collect feedback on the effectiveness and safety of the buses as well as obtain approval for its actual use in the future.
The initiative for the Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit (IMBRT) system is welcomed by Menteri Besar Johor, Datuk Ir. Hasni Mohammad, who officiated the pilot test. “This service will ensure an efficient, convenient and environmentally-friendly public transportation system, covering a wide range of areas,” he said. “I am confident that it will be a catalyst for development, not only for the Iskandar Malaysia area, but for the entire state of Johor”.
The project has identified feeder, direct, and main routes that reach 2,043 kilometers or about 90% of the populated areas in Iskandar Malaysia. Each type of route will be served by buses of different sizes and capacity. When fully implemented, the IMBRT will be able to connect 55 feeder routes and 44 direct routes with the main route covering 33 stations.
IRDA Chief Executive, Datuk Ismail Ibrahim stressed that an efficient and integrated public transport infrastructure is important to attract foreign and domestic investments, thus increasing the attractiveness of the development corridor. “This IMBRT project is expected to create up to 35,000 jobs and increase Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Johor,” he added.
At the event, Datuk Ir. Hasni was joined by Chairman of the Johor State Public Works, Transportation, and Infrastructure Committee, Mohd Solihan Badri, and Chief Executive of the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), Datuk Ismail Ibrahim.

Group CEO of Sime Darby Bhd, Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson, speaking at the launch.
One of the largest conglomerates in Malaysia, Sime Darby, has launched the Sime Darby Motors City which is claimed to be the largest automotive complex in Southeast Asia. This large automotive facility is yet another milestone for Sime Darby Motors, the automotive division of the group which oversees the 10 flagship brands it represents in Malaysia.
The entire complex is split into six flagship centres featuring the 10 brands i.e. BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, MINI, Motorrad, Porsche and Volvo, as well as the Sime Darby Auto Selection pre-owned vehicles.
Located in Ara Damansara, Sime Darby Motors City spans an area of 8.6 acres. Its total built-up area of 1.3 million square feet includes some of the largest flagship showrooms in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. It also has an indoor facility capable of housing nearly 100 pre-owned cars under Sime Darby Auto Selection. The cost of this project is about RM570 million.
“As one of the key players in the automotive industry, Sime Darby Motors has always been committed to pursuing excellence as we strive to provide world-class services to our customers. The launch of Sime Darby Motors City is a testament to this steadfast commitment,” said Andrew Basham, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors.
Sime Darby Motors City is designed to be future-ready as the automotive industry continues to evolve and embrace new technology. It is equipped with specialised EV-certified technicians and designated areas for EV charging, storage and repairs, which are currently available at Auto Bavaria, Auto Hyundai, Auto Performance and Swedish Auto.
Sime Darby Auto Performance has been leading the way in providing superior facilities for EV charging with Malaysia’s first fast Direct Current (DC) high performance charger. Operational since September 2020 within the Porsche Centre, this DC charger can deliver a maximum of 175 kW and is able to provide a near-full charge within 36 minutes. This is at least eight times faster than the fastest Alternating Current (AC) charger available at 22 kW.
Furthermore, the complex is a Green Building Index (GBI) certified facility built with sustainability in mind and incorporates technologies to cultivate a paperless organisational culture.
As a showcase of luxury and mass market automotive brands, Sime Darby Motors City is a reflection of Sime Darby Motors’ commitment to be the partner of choice for automotive brands in Asia Pacific. For example, the facility includes Sime Darby Swedish Auto, the latest partner for Volvo Cars. The Volvo flagship store at Sime Darby Motors City features Southeast Asia’s first 3S showroom to be equipped with a Virtual Reality Studio.
Sime Darby Motors is also proud of its long-standing partnerships with its many principal brands, such as its 49-year partnership with BMW and its 40-year alliance with Ford and Jaguar Land Rover. “We are excited to continue exploring new automotive business solutions and potential opportunities with our partners. Through Sime Darby Motors City, we are committed to playing an integral role in accelerating the growth of the regional automotive sector while contributing to the Malaysian economy,” Basham added.
Integrated with the latest technologies to enhance the overall customer experience at every touchpoint, the facility boasts nearly 200 service bays, 700 customer parking spaces as well as electric vehicle (EV) charging bays. The showrooms have the capacity to display over 180 vehicles in total.
Supporting the facility are approximately 60 Auto Bavaria technicians for BMW, MINI and Motorrad, and over 110 certified technicians. This includes technicians who hold the highest level of certification by the principal brands, including the Zertifizierter Porsche Techniker Gold Certification which is streamlined for Porsche technicians worldwide. Brands like Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar and Land Rover also have certifications with the highest being trained as Master Technicians.
To improve service capacity and deliver top-class service to customers, Sime Darby Motors City utilises Internet of Things (IoT) technology in its operational processes; the first automotive facility in Malaysia to do so.
At the heart of the facility’s digital infrastructure is its Vehicle Tracking Management system which utilises a camera-based parking guide and customisable signages to ensure a higher level of guidance, security and convenience for the customer. It also allows for quicker collection of vehicles upon completion of service. Internally, the facility’s digitalised infrastructure communicates the status of each vehicle in real-time, ensuring greater efficiencies are achieved.
IoT-powered Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have also been installed, as part of a contactless self-check-in system, which enables customers’ appointment data to be accessed, upon their arrival. Concurrently, a service advisor will be alerted and automatically assigned to the customer, allowing for a seamless experience. These IoT features will be rolled out progressively throughout Sime Darby Motors City.
Once in the showroom, customers can perform contactless self-check-in via a QR code system. This will allow customers to be placed immediately in the queue without having to wait to be attended to. This system is meant to provide for a fuss-free service experience. The introduction of this check-in system will be introduced across all brands at Sime Darby Motors City.
Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director for Retail & Distribution – Malaysia of Sime Darby Motors, explaining the facilities
To support these enhancements to the aftersales experience, Sime Darby Motors has also digitalised the business for its sales representatives. This includes the introduction of a mobile application, which has enabled sales representatives to be connected anytime and anywhere with real-time data to better serve customers. With the mobile application, they can now populate and print application forms wirelessly, minimising steps in the administrative process and reducing customers’ waiting time.
In addition to its internal improvements, Sime Darby Motors City is also collaborating with external partners for customer convenience. It has partnered SOCAR, Malaysia’s leading car-sharing network and myTukar, Malaysia’s fastest growing online used car trading platform. The complex will have designated parking bays for SOCAR vehicles – ideal for customers dropping off their vehicles for service and picking up a SOCAR ride to leave. Additionally, Sime Darby Motors City will be a showcase centre for myTukar trade-in vehicles, in collaboration with Sime Darby Auto Selection.
Launch Deals Across Six Flagship Stores
To commemorate this launch, Sime Darby Motors City will be holding a “Grand Launch Weekend” with attractive deals across the six flagship stores between 16 and 18 April 2021.
You are welcome to visit to browse the vehicles and check out the promotions, but are advised to make an appointment, to adhere to the standard operating procedures on crowd control and physical distancing.
“Sime Darby Motors City is truly a one-stop hub for customers shopping for their next vehicle. An enhanced customer experience awaits them with our digitalised, highly certified technicians, luxurious lounges and ample covered parking spaces. Customers who visit us this weekend can also take advantage of the many attractive deals available and capitalise on the government’s vehicle sales tax exemption which will last until June 2021,” said Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director, Retail and Distribution for Malaysia, Sime Darby Motors.
Sime Darby Motors City is located at No. 6, Jalan PJU 1A/7, Ara Damansara 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, approximately 7 minutes from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang).

BMW Group Malaysia has announced its commitment to a year-long multi-stakeholder upcycling initiative to reduce plastic waste. This initiative will incorporate the use of Precious Plastic machines to give plastic waste generated from all BMW Group Malaysia activities a second life.
The BMW Group has great ambitions to lower carbon emissions from all its production plants and sites by 80%, targeting the biggest reductions industry-wide in this area by 2030. This will require years of research, innovation, and collaborative expertise on a global scale, which BMW Group Malaysia is proud to be a part of. And on the individual level, there are also many impactful ways to help tackle climate change in Malaysia. The most commonly overlooked issue being plastic pollution.
“To exemplify the BMW Group’s solutions-focused direction, we must lead a movement by example – no matter the size of impact left. Here at BMW Group Malaysia, we are putting words into action by installing our own Precious Plastic machines to give our office, household, and daily plastic waste a second, more meaningful life,” said Sashi Ambi, Head of Corporate Communications at BMW Group Malaysia.
The local body of a global movement, Precious Plastic Malaysia, is an organisation that focuses on converting and upcycling plastic waste into usable everyday items as a means to fight plastic pollution. By breaking down used common plastics into chips, they can be melted down and moulded into something new, thus creating treasure from trash.
The support of BMW Group Malaysia’s employees, dealers, customers, and media friends in recycling their plastic waste can lend to a lasting impact on reducing plastic pollution, one step at a time.
How to Identify Plastics
There are many types of plastics used on a daily basis and without much thought to them. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Polypropylene (PP) are the most common plastics found. They can be easily identified by the number label that is typically available along the sides or the bottom of the item.
Plastics labelled “2” (for HDPE) and “5” (PP) are most commonly used and recycled in Malaysia, followed by “1” (PET) which is an inexpensive material common in single-use items. With the Precious Plastic machines, plastics labelled “2” and “5” can be upcycled into everyday items. This recycling initiative is the beginning of a year-long plastic upcycling project that aims to significantly reduce the disposal of plastic waste from across all BMW Group Malaysia activities and divert them from landfills. Internal education and training on plastic upcycling will also run concurrently, where BMW employees will receive hands-on training to create precious items out of plastic waste for upcoming community projects.

There is no official price yet but is estimated to cost RM300,800 (on the road without insurance). The 330Li is a locally assembled model, and BMW Malaysia also exports it to regional markets.
“The BMW 3 Series has been a consistent chart-topper for the BMW portfolio in Malaysia – with over 2,500 units delivered to satisfied customers across Malaysia in 2020 alone. “The First-Ever BMW 330Li M Sport emerges as a marvel in new dimensions for the BMW 3 Series, combining the capaciousness of a longer wheelbase with the ever-present sportiness of a BMW compact executive sedan, sacrificing neither in the process. The power is transmitted via a Steptronic Sport transmission. Acceleration from 0 – 100 km/h is dispatched in 6.2 seconds, and its top speed is capped at 250 km/h. Average fuel consumption is marked at 6.4 litres per 100 km, while carbon emission is measured at 147 g/km.
In the car, the additional length of the car provides an extra 4 mm in headroom compared to the BMW 330i M Sport, as well as an additional 42 mm in legroom for rear passengers. Sport utility vehicles, or crossovers, or whatever else you want to call them, they are here to stay. From Perodua to Toyota to Rolls-Royce, every brand has jumped on the utility wagon and won’t be getting off anytime soon. What used to be a niche model in a brand’s product line-up is sometimes now the dominant one where consumers have a wide choice of price tags and sizes.
Japanese premium automaker Lexus, is no different. For years, its RX SUV was a top-seller and a popular model in the grey import market. But competition is stiffer now, and diversifying its range to introduce its brand value to a new set of demographics makes sense.
Enter the Lexus UX, the latest and most compact member of the Lexus SUV family. At first glance, the UX bears resemblance to a jacked-up hatchback, which isn’t by accident. Designed from the ground up upon the new Lexus Global Architecture platform, Lexus wants the UX to offer hatchback styling with SUV versatility. With a low centre of gravity, and a rigid chassis, the UX offers a more dynamic driving experience. It also has one of the best turning radius in its class i.e. 5.2 metres, making it easy to manoeuvre, especially in the city.
Power-wise, the 169 hp and 205 Nm from the naturally aspirated 2.0L inline 4-cylinder petrol engine may not look game-changing on paper, but it works well in real world application. The throttle is responsive and acceleration is smooth. Thus, even if it makes do without the turbocharging like some of its rivals, this engine feels solid and capable.
The smooth power delivery is also courtesy of a 10-speed Direct Shift continuously variable transmission (CVT) which has a mechanical gear to aid acceleration from standstill and reduce the ‘rubber band’ feeling of typical CVTs. And once you get the UX going, the Direct Shift CVT is a boon for fuel economy, if you’re into such things. The drive mode selector is located on the left side of the meter binnacle and closer to your hand for faster and easier mode selection.
Its compact dimensions also has the benefit of providing driving thrills as it is one of the most engaging and sharp handling crossovers. It even boasts a world’s first set of aero-stabilising blade lights in the rear that integrate with the tail lights and provide aerodynamic efficiency. The double wishbone rear suspension further helps to keep the car in your control in very enthusiastic driving. Coupled with a steering wheel that is nicely weighted and predictable, this allows the UX driver to have more confidence taking corners on country roads. Ride comfort isn’t far from expectations of a Lexus but don’t count on the rear passengers applauding if you dive into a corner, which you may be inclined to do given the sense of agility you feel at the wheel. Your passengers will however, appreciate the serenity of the interior when your are more civil, even at the highway speed limit, thanks to the well-insulated cabin.
But the compactness of the UX also limits the interior space to that of a cozy one, especially in the rear. However, the cobalt-white smooth leather upholstery and fairly sizeable windows help to lighten the interior mood. There are also cooling vents and a pair of USB ports to keep the rear passengers happy.
Up front, the dashboard has a driver-centric layout for extra convenience. The centre tunnel console seems relatively wide for something like the UX but gives you the convenience of storage, a wireless charging pad, and a Lexus touchpad to work the infotainment system (which is an 8-speaker system that includes a CD slot under the climate control buttons). The touchpad has useful physical buttons surrounding it as well as at the tapered palm rest section of the armrest but needs familiarity to properly use it, which owners will eventually have. Within the armrest storage are another two USB ports and a 3.5 mm auxiliary port. Furthermore, the UX 200 Luxury variant features a Japanese washi paper grain texture to the dashboard trim and sashiko quilting on the seats to add some fanciness to the cabin.
Other notable convenient features offered are the hands-free boot access, ventilated front seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, rear view camera with side view, cornering view and ‘see-through’ view. Additionally, there is the Lexus Safety System+ driving assistance which includes Front Pre-Collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Lane Keeping System with Lane Tracing Assist and Lane Departure Alert, as well as an Adaptive High Beam System. Some of the other safety features are Active Cornering Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.
While I admit the Lexus UX is a little too compact for my family (especially with the 271-litre boot), I enjoyed its refinement and beauty enough to totally see this as an additional car in the driveway for lone driving in the city and the occasional long weekend drive with the better half.
But as a primary ride, it is more suited to the singles or couples, and offers the first step for someone to Experience Amazing.

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT), the sole importer, distributor and assembler of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia, recorded strong sales growth in the first quarter of 2021. In the first three months of the year, UMWT sold over 17,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles. This is a year-on-year increase of 62% and approximately a market share of 12.1%.
“Malaysia, has seen strong Toyota sales this year due to improving conditions of the pandemic. With our wider line-up of models and exciting offerings, we are confident that our sales volume will grow steadily this year and certainly exceed the volume recorded in 2020. As always, we thank our loyal customers and also welcome those who are owning a Toyota for the first time,” said Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor.
The best-selling Toyota models were the Toyota Vios and Toyota Hilux which continues to be the market leader, accounting for approximately 56% of the pick-up truck market in the first quarter. The Vios and Vios GR-Sport also achieved positive response with approximately 5,600 numbers sold since their launch. In addition, the Toyota Yaris has consistently been No. 1 in the Non-National hatchback segment with an estimated market share of 73% in 1Q21.
Commenting on the achievement, President, Ravindran K., said: “During the first quarter of 2020, the market was already declining due to the pandemic. This year, it’s a different story; with the situation easing as well as the support by the government through the PENJANA program that exempts sales tax partially or fully until June 30 this year, new vehicle sales have been consistently high. In fact, for Toyota, our momentum started in December when we launched the Toyota GR Yaris and Vios GR-Sport which excited the market and set a positive note to enter 2021,” he added.
Furthermore, the Vios Challenge One-Make Race Series that is now entering its fourth season has left a strong impression on the public with regards to the dynamic side of the brand. Sales of the GR Yaris exceeded expectations. Most of the units allocated for the Malaysian market (out of 25,000 units available worldwide) were booked within a month of launch. The strong response mirrored that in other markets as enthusiasts quickly snapped up the competition-ready hatchback which is a good sign the brand is also attractive to the performance-inclined.
The GR Yaris is one of three models in Toyota’s high-performance GR brand which are available in Malaysia. The other models are the GR Supra and Vios GR-Sport. These models are exclusively sold through dealerships with the GR Garage that is dedicated to the sporty side of the brand.
Toyota seems to be starting 2021 on a good footing this year. The updated versions of the Toyota Innova and Toyota Fortuner were introduced earlier in the year with fresh new styling and extra value-added features and should contribute to its sales volume.
Also, the response to the all-new Toyota Corolla Cross launched in March is encouraging and could give UMWT another staple in its stable. The initial batch of CBU units have been spoken for and the company expects the locally assembled units of the Corolla Cross 1.8G and 1.8V to be available by the fourth quarter of 2021.
Festive Promotions
With the Hari Raya festive season coming soon, UMWT is running the ‘Countless Rewards’ promotions for customers to drive a Toyota for Raya and also to take advantage of the sales tax exemption period before it ends. The sales tax exemption applies to both the fully imported CBU models as well as the locally assembled CKD ones.
Additionally, the EZ Beli financing scheme offers low instalments (depending on the model) while the Toyota Service Savers packages also offers savings. This provides Toyota customers with peace-of-mind vehicle ownership with lowered maintenance cost of their Toyota vehicles.
Isuzu Malaysia Sdn Bhd recently delivered eight units of its Forward Series (F-Series) medium-duty trucks to Mr D.I.Y. Group (M) Berhad, a popular homegrown retail giant. Of the eight new trucks, six are the Isuzu FSR90 while the remaining two units are the Isuzu FVR300. These trucks are part of Mr DIY’s fleet expansion due to increased logistical needs.
“We are very pleased to have completed the delivery of eight units of Isuzu medium-duty FSR90 and FVR300 trucks to our esteemed customer, MR D.I.Y., and to be able to continuously provide the support they require to operate their flourishing logistical assignments. We would like to thank MR D.I.Y. for the support and trust given to the Isuzu brand,” commented Koji Nakamura, CEO of Isuzu Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
MR D.I.Y. purchased its first Isuzu truck in 2017 and has been steadily adding more units to its fleet over the last four years. With these additional eight units, MR D.I.Y. now owns a total of 100 units of Isuzu trucks in its fleet.
The new trucks were purchased from Ultra Gallant Sdn Bhd, an authorised dealer for Isuzu and were presented to Mr D.I.Y. at its headquarters in Seri Kembangan.
“As one of the largest Japanese truck manufacturers globally, it is our obligation to provide our customers with commercial vehicles that can lead the way forward for their business to achieve maximum efficiency and productivity,” said Nakamura.
He added that both of the models are from Isuzu’s F-Series medium-duty commercial vehicles that it has been producing for decades through continuous development of new trucking innovations. Customers have been relying on this truck model for the advanced features, innovative design, and dependable performance.
“Isuzu’s F-Series range of commercial vehicles feature a choice of five powertrain for a range of performance and torque, optimized wheelbases for greater load capacity and body-mounting capability, offering the versatility today’s businesses need to be successful,” Nakamura added.
Commenting on the handover of the vehicles, a MR D.I.Y. spokesperson said, “We are on a strong growth trajectory, with 700 stores now, and plan to open 175 new stores across our three brands in 2021. The backbone of our growth is the efficient distribution of goods via our centrally-managed distribution system. Isuzu has been a valued long-standing partner who well understands our needs, and has been supportive in meeting them.”
“The Isuzu FSR90 and FVR300 medium-duty trucks are the ideal, adaptable, and value-added choice for meeting the requirements of any transport assignment. With the gross vehicle weight of 11,900 kg for FSR90 and 19,000 kg for FVR300, we are confident the trucks will be able to provide high utilization with absolute productivity, reliability, and safety for the sustainability of MR D.I.Y.’s soaring business,” said Nakamura.
