The Maserati Levante Hybrid has been unveiled to the world in both virtual and physical events. In a double act global premiere, the Levante Hybrid was introduced in physical form at the Shanghai Auto Show (21 – 28 April 2021), as well as in a virtual launch for the rest of the world.

The Levante Hybrid is the trident brand’s first electrified SUV, subsequent to its Ghibli Hybrid launched last year as part of an electrification effort of its product range. The Levante Hybrid is touted to be faster, yet with a more sustainable in terms of emissions and fuel consumption.

Maserati is innovative by nature, and with Levante, it pursues the philosophy behind its entry into the world of electrification: the aim of improving performance while staying true to the brand’s values, delivering speed and agility while saving fuel and reinforcing the Trident’s dedication to driving pleasure and luxury.

Maserati_Levante HybridEven as a hybrid, the Levante retains the distinctive roar of a Maserati. The Levante Hybrid combines the 4-cylinder, 2.0L turbo engine with a 48V hybrid system to recover energy during deceleration and braking. This hybrid SUV weighs less than the 6-cylinder engine equivalent (both diesel and gasoline), and above all has an even better weight distribution since the battery is placed in the rear without compromising the load capacity, and optimally balancing the mass of the vehicle. This results in an SUV that is even more agile and fun to drive.

The powertrain produces a maximum power output of 330 hp and torque of 450 Nm from just 2,250 rpm, sent via a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The performance data of the Levante Hybrid, only available with all-wheel drive, is impressive i.e. acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6 seconds, and a top speed of 240 km/h. In addition, braking from 100 km/h to 0 takes about 36 metres. There is no official WLTP fuel consumption figures yet as it is still pending certification.

The Levante Hybrid launch version is characterised by a new metallic tri-coat colour called Azzurro Astro, available as part of the Brand’s customisation programme, Maserati Fuoriserie.

Other exterior and interior details contribute to this car’s immediately recognisable design: some are in blue, the shade chosen to identify hybrid cars, already used on the Maserati Ghibli Hybrid. The blue is seen on the three iconic side air ducts, the brake calipers and the C-pillar logo. The same blue shade reappears inside the car, specifically on the embroidered seams of the seats.

Additionally, Levante Hybrid boasts connectivity courtesy of the new Maserati Connect programme. Having your Maserati connected at all times enables an eye to be kept on the car’s health. Maserati Connect will alert the driver when a service is due, thereby improving the customer care experience. With a smartphone or smart watch, drivers can stay in contact with their car via the Maserati Connect App; this is also possible from home via their virtual personal assistant (Amazon Alexa & Google Assist). However, this feature is not yet available in all markets.

The Perodua Aruz SUV is officially on sale in Singapore at a retail price of S$92,999 (approximately RM288,518), inclusive of the GST and COE (certificate of entitlement). This marks the first international market for the Aruz which is the best-selling SUV in Malaysia for the past two years.

Additionally, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), ISOFIX and six airbags contribute to a full five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating. Other standard equipment include LED headlamps, 17″ two-tone alloys, keyless entry and start, and a touchscreen infotainment system with reverse camera display.

Homegrown electric vehicle maker, Tree Technologies Sdn Bhd (also known as Treeletrik), has signed a partnership deal to supply 200,000 electric motorbikes to Indonesia. The company will supply its Treeletrik electric motorbikes via distributors, PT Pasifik Sakti Enjiniring and Nahdatul Ulama Board (PBNU).

This partnership will expand Treeletrik’s regional presence and reinforce its position as a key player in promoting electric mobility, supporting ASEAN’s energy transition agenda. Tree Technologies is a subsidiary of Ideanomics (NASDAQ: IDEX), which is headquartered in USA and has operations China, Ukraine, Malaysia and USA. Ideanomics acquired 51% ownership of Treeletrik in 2019. The company had since begun organising itself for growth in the ASEAN region to tap the region’s heavy reliance on two- and three-wheeled transportation.

The move positions Malaysia as a key EV manufacturer and first regional supplier to export units in ASEAN, in line with the region’s evolving energy landscape. The region’s ultimate goal of decreasing the level of final energy consumption in the road transport sector by 2040 paves the way for EV makers like Treeletrik to continue building a progressive EV ecosystem.

The agreement will span three years and will see Treeletrik supply electric motorbikes to be jointly marketed by PT Pasifik Sakti Enjiniring and PBNU for the Indonesian market. PT Pasifik Sakti Enjiniring, which operates the electric motorbikes brand, MOLINUS (Motor Listrik Nusantara), will now add Treeletrik’s 100% electric motorbikes to its portfolio. A joint venture is also in the pipeline between Treeletrik and PT Pasifik Sakti Enjiniring to establish an assembly plant in Indonesia in anticipation of growing demand for the electric motorcycles. The move will serve as a positive boost to Indonesia’s economy through talent development, job opportunities and technology transfer.

The new electric motorbike range, certified in Europe and Malaysia with UNECE WP.29, will feature Treeletrik’s signature quick swap lithium battery technology. With an average speed of 65 – 90 km/h, the e-motorbikes have a travel range of between 85 and 120 km (averaging 70,000 km over 36 months) and costs about RM0.01 to RM0.02 to run per km, based on the Tenaga Nasional electricity rate at RM0.571 / KwH, charging at its highest tariff.

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace R-Line has received some minor equipment upgrades. This update is part of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia’s (VPCM) continuous effort to enhance the ownership experience for its customers.

New for 2021, the Tiguan Allspace R-Line gets USB-C data and charging ports, as well as an update to its entertainment system to include wireless App-Connect for Apple CarPlay. The locally assembled Allspace R-Line uses a 9.2” Discover Pro navigation infotainment system with voice and gesture control.

The Allspace is a 5+2 seater SUV that allows for greater flexibility in seating and carrying configuration. With the third row seats folded down, it offers a spacious boot volume of 700 litres. With both the second and third row seats down, you get 1,775 litres of cargo space, the best in its segment.

Scania has provided the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) with buses for pilot-testing of renewable fuels and electrification solutions for public transportation. The evaluation of these buses is meant for the study of the Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit (IMBRT) system, which was officially launched recently by the Johor Mentri Besar, YAB Datuk Ir Haji Hasni Haji Muhammad, who is also co-Chairman of IRDA. The Scania buses will be tested over a 20 km loop route. One of them is a 10-metre long bus running on biodiesel, while another is a 12-metre electric development project for IRDA’s technical team only. There is also a 15-metre high capacity bus available for test ride only for IRDA.

Scania_B100 Biodiesel BusThe 10-metre Biodiesel Bus from Scania that is capable of operating on B100 (100%) biodiesel. FAME-prepared Scania buses can run on all blends of diesel and biodiesel, ranging from B10, B20 and even up to B100. FAME is the abbreviation for “Fatty Acid Methyl Esters”, the technical term for biodiesel produced in Malaysia.

The FAME buses are environmentally-friendly, and help to lower global emissions by reducing CO2 thus limiting the effects of climate change. The usage of this form of biodiesel bus also helps to support the palm oil industry and smallholders.

Scania BEV_Electric BusMeanwhile, the 12-metre Electric Bus development project by Scania and Partners eliminates tailpipe emission and lowers noise pollution with an electric drive train. The operation is more efficient, and the ride more comfortable and safe, creating a more positive passenger experience. With brighter and more spacious interior due to a simpler yet advanced setup, it is easier to maintain and keep clean.

Additionally, the 15-metre High Capacity Bus from Scania helps to increase revenue and lower costs for operators. It comes with additional seats for passengers, air suspension, steered rear axle, built-in safety systems such as Electronic Braking System (EBS), Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB), Manual and Automatic Retarder System, and Speed Limiter. These features make for a safer and more comfortable ride for passengers and eases the stress on bus drivers in an urban environment.

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HDSM) has launched the updated Hyundai KONA compact SUV. There are two variants of the newly enhanced KONA on offer i.e. the standard KONA 2.0 and KONA 2.0 Active. The KONA is fully imported from South Korea with retail prices at RM119,888 and RM136,888 respectively (on the road without insurance).

Hyundai Kona 2.0 ActiveThe enhanced KONA features a sleeker front profile that now wears a new cascading grille design in place of the hexagonal grille, and new headlight design. The armour cladding that used to surround the headlights and join with the front fenders now sits beneath the headlights and extends across the face of the crossover. Additionally, the skid plate on the lower bumper embraces the lower air intake and visually complements the shape of the main upper grille. Integrated into the bumper corners are vertically oriented aerodynamic inlets that improve air flow. Similarly, the rear bumper has also been re-profiled. The new rear bumper, which also follows the protective armour concept of the front and sides, also uses a contrasting material. This has resulted in an increase in overall exterior length by 40 mm, though the interior dimensions remain unchanged. Boot space measures at 361 litres (VDA). The KONA comes with updated 17″ or 18″ wheel designs, depending on the variant.

The Active variant is fitted with dual LED (low and high projection) headlights, while the Standard variant uses halogen units. The daytime running lights of the Active variant also doubles as turning signals while the Standard has a standard turning light within the headlight cluster. Active also gets a pair of front LED fog lights, with LEDs also featured at the rear; the Standard uses standard bulb lighting units.

Hyundai Kona_SideBoth the two-wheel drive KONA share the same Smartstream G2.0 Atkinson four-cylinder petrol engine that is paired with a Smartstream IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission) transmission to produce 149 PS @ 6,200 rpm and 180 Nm of torque @ 4,500 rpm. Smartstream is Hyundai’s latest range of powertrain technology derived from its efforts in motorsports. It is supposed to offer more dynamic performance, improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Although only in 2WD guise, the KONA has a traction control mode for mud, sand and snow conditions.

The KONA’s interior has been redesigned for a more upscale look. The updated interior is completed by new colours and materials. New seat cover options include a black woven houndstooth design, cloth seats with black and grey embossing and perforated leather seats in black or beige.

Hyundai Kona_Interior_Dashboard_SteeringMost of the changes are in the centre console area. The 8″ touchscreen now features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity (with Google Maps and Waze), and the physical control buttons have been moved from the sides of the screen to below it, giving it a more horizontal appearance. Furthermore, an electric parking brake with auto hold function has replaced the conventional handbrake, in response to customer feedback. There is also a USB port and storage tray for the rear passengers. There is a total of three USB ports in the vehicle, with one dedicated for connectivity.

New to this model are a 10.25″ digital instrument cluster and head-up display for the KONA Active variant. This variant also gets 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat and single zone climate control. However, standard for both variants is remote engine start function via smart key.

Other key standard features are cruise control, rear view camera with dynamic parking guide, tyre pressure monitoring system, and automatic light control.

Hyundai SmartSense_Pedestrian DetectionThe safety system for the KONA Active is a bit more extensive although both variants get six SRS airbags, traction control, vehicle stability management, hill start assist control, etc as standard. The Active variant gets the added benefit of Hyundai SmartSense which includes Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) and Rear Cross Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA); and Safe Exit Warning (SEW), which detects oncoming vehicle from the rear and then displays a visual and audio warning to alert the passenger from exiting the vehicle; Lane Keeping Assist (LKA); Lane Following Assist (LFA); Driver Attention Warning (DAW) with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert; Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) and High Beam Assist (HBA). The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) has also been upgraded with pedestrian and vehicle detection.

Meanwhile, the KONA 2.0 Active has Surfy Blue, Ignite Flame and Misty Jungle as exterior colour choices to match a Black leather interior; or Dive In Jeju and Dark Knight to match the Light Beige leather interior.

The KONA comes with a five-year or 300,000 km warranty (whichever comes first) and also 3-year or 50,000 km (whichever comes first) free maintenance service.

Lexus Malaysia has launched the new Lexus LM 350 MPV, slightly earlier than previously scheduled. The MPV term is used quite loosely here as this has more of a single purpose i.e. as a business-class ‘Luxury Mover’. This flagship suite on wheels from the Japanese premium marque arrives fully imported and has a retail price of RM1,148,000 (on the road without insurance).

Lexus LM 350_Powered Sliding DoorThe Lexus LM 350 raises the stakes in the luxury transportation segment with the refinement and craftsmanship offered, in line with the brand’s ‘omotenashi‘ philosophy of providing hospitality and service beyond expectations. With an overall length of 5,040 mm, width of 1,850 mm and height of 1,895 mm, the LM 350 offers plenty of room for a maximum of four occupants.

The ultra-premium interior of this chauffeur-driven vehicle is designed to pamper the rear occupants with privacy and relaxation. With only four seats in the vehicle, the LM 350 provides a luxurious, personal space for those constantly on the move. Accessed through powered sliding doors, the rear features just two VIP lounge seats with ottomans, allowing for plenty of legroom and more. The seats can recline fully and are made with Adaptipedic memory foam to provide the highest level of comfort. The seats feature 7-mode massage function as well as individual cooling and heating.

Lexus engineers had added a partition between the front and rear seats to increase privacy. A unique glass panel sits in this partition, and can be raised to provide further acoustic isolation. Electronic particles within the glass panel can also change the opacity to ensure greater privacy. With the view to the cabin’s rear obscured, the driver relies on a camera in the tailgate for rear visibility. Additionally, the interior wood ornamentation is inspired by the intricate ‘gin-sui-boku‘, the Japanese art of ink wash painting. While the twin moon roofs provide the option of a more open ambience. Cabin ambience also benefits from the 18″ aluminium noise-reducing wheels.

Entertainment for the rear occupants is provided by a 19-speaker Mark Levinson QLI Reference Surround Sound System with a dynamic full-bodied sound stage, as well as a 26″ HD display panel with multiple playback functions (including Blu-ray) and connectivity options set into the partition.

Other key features in the cabin include a 3-zone climate control with pollen filter and Nanoe negative ion generator, fold-out magazine rack, a 14L mini fridge, LED ambient lighting, as well as large cubicles on either side of the vehicle.

For the driver, there is a 12.3″ Electro Multi-Vision touchscreen display to access the vehicle’s functions, navigation and entertainment; these can be accessed via the touch pad as well. Furthermore, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Qi wireless charging are available.

Ride quality is also enhanced by the Lexus-engineered suspension system that employs swing valve shock absorbers. With the ultra-low velocity valves within the shock absorbers, the Lexus LM 350 is able to finely control there oil flow thus allowing it to be more responsive to compensate for road imperfections.

It is covered by a comprehensive 5-year unlimited mileage warranty and is now available at all authorised Lexus Centres nationwide. The early buyers of the LM 350 are expected to receive their brand new luxury mover shipped from Inabe, Japan as early as July.
