Technicians from authorized Chery dealerships nationwide pitted their skills and technical knowledge against each other in the 3rd Chery National Technical Skill Competition 2015 held recently at the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Hotel in Penang by Chery Automobile (M) Sdn Bhd.
Chery technicians participating in the event must have served the brand for at least a year and possess over three years of working experience. Each dealership is entitled to send between one and three technicians to participate in the event accompanied by a supervisor.
Elaborating on the significance of the event, Chery Automobile’s Deputy Vice President of After Sales, Mr KG Lim said, “We organize this yearly competition to show our clients of Chery that we are continuously improving in our after sales service.”
Divided into two rounds, the 31 technicians who made their way to Penang to participate in the day-long competition were first put to the test in a multiple-choice written exam with questions set by Chery Automobiles’ brand principal from China.
Subject matters covered in the written exam required comprehensive knowledge of the latest powertrain designs, electrical systems, and on-board vehicle management software implemented on Chery vehicles. In the interest of full accountability, answers to the test were sent by email from China after the test’s conclusion and marked on the spot.
“The questions that were given to the technicians were standard questions from China issued to Chery distributors from around the world; Iran, South America, everyone gets the same question. We want to prove to our clients that our standards are on par with the rest of the world. By doing so, we hope to give our clients better confidence to our products,” said Mr KG Lim.
The nine highest-scoring participants of the written test advance to the practical session held in the same afternoon. In the practical test, the technicians were given five scenarios, in which they were judged on their ability to accurately follow the company’s prescribed diagnostic process and successfully repair vehicles within specified time limits.
While focusing on several diagnostic areas, participants were tested on their troubleshooting skills with Chery’s latest drivetrain technologies, including that of the popular Eastar, Maxime and Transcar models. In addition, finalists were judged on customer service criteria such as professionalism, safety and clean-up.
“In order to get consumer confidence to our brand, we need strong after sales. Of course, there are a lot of other criteria as well, but the great importance is on the after sales service. If customers come into our dealerships and are satisfied with our service, their confidence can be spread to others by word-of-mouth,” Mr Lim further noted.
All participating technicians of the event receive a certificate of participation; the nine finalists are given an Excellence award each for advancing past the written test, whilst the top three winners receive generous Aeon cash vouchers for themselves in addition to parts vouchers for the dealerships that they represent.
Additionally, the event’s overall winner will get a chance to pit his skills on a global stage against Chery technicians from other parts of the world in the Chery World Technical Skill Competition to be held in China next year.
