While driving home on the NPE in the afternoon a Focus Sport+ in "midnight sky" colour pass me. The driver waved to me and I returned the gesture. If the owner is on this forum I'd like to say Hi. smile.gif

It's certainly a nice looking car. The Focus Sport. Too bad I need the boot. Need to sacrifice the better handling of the Sport model.

By the way, any idea if the suspension of the Sport model is different from the Titanium sedan model? I've asked my service advisor before and initially he said it's the same, then several days later he said it's different. Not reliable information. From the website it appears that the suspension of the Sport is different from the Titanium. The Sport's suspension is mentioned as "Sports-tuned suspension". For the Titanium, nothing is mentioned.

The Sport and Sport+ has a slightly stiffer suspension and coupled with the 17" rims/50 series tyre combo and shorter overhang at the rear should contribute to a sportier drive. I wouldn't mind buying the 18" rim/tyre combo of the ST, if anyone is selling.

The sedan, in Titanium trim, is more family orientated and comfort biased. smile.gif

Couldn't agree more with breadman.

Sedans ride is so much more refine compared to the hatch.
However, being a petrol head, i followed my heart instead of my brains ...
I went with the Hatch !! tongue.gif

Dear All,

Going to buy new car for wife ... its now either the new Focus or the more expensive Golf.

My previous car was the 1st batch Focus Mk 2, and tho I loved the sweet handling, it was clearly NOT the best choice at the time - lousy drivetrain, so-so service, frequent annoying small problems with rare and pricey spare parts. I don't blame the car company, but more the local dealership.

Now things seem to have improved in general, the car as well as the package offered ... which is why I'd like to ask all of you MK 3 owners out there, what are your feedback in regards to your ownership so far?

Any complaints over the following aspects, before I go into another deja vu of horrors (I still have a sweet spot for Fords) blush.gif

1) Fuel Economy - how good / bad is it ? Full tank how much? Goes for how many KM with city driving?

2) Aftersales Service Quality

3) Any spare part issue (maybe we won't know yet)

4) which dealer is best to go to / avoid in Klang Valley

5) what common problems do you face (if any)

Otherwise, I may just have to fork out 25% more for a peace of mind (new Golf).

Many thanks!!

Hi Beamer 28

1) Fuel Economy - for me 8.3km/L. City driving.
2) After Sales Service - Poor
3) Spare part issue - No idea yet but the service is poor.
4) Dealer - I cannot compare. Got mine from Auto Connexion PJ.
5) Common problem - Low speed Gear/Clutch problem. Waiting for warranty to replace leaking clutch already 2 months and no one even call me back.

Don't get me wrong. The car is great. Good handling and a joy to drive.
The negatives are mainly the poor service of the service centres and the dual clutch which really sucks at low speed.

As usual, it will depend on your priorities and what you want to have in a vehicle when weighing between the Ford Focus Mk3 and VW Golf.

I cannot comment on points 1 to 4 above but can comment on 5. Not exactly a problem but more of an observation. I have owned and driven mostly comfortable cars. Comfortable in areas of quietness and supple comfort-tuned suspension. Since I have not driven a more performance-orientated vehicle with increased levels of handling and driving dynamics, I had decided to give the Ford Focus a go. Having lived with the vehicle for almost 3 months now, I can say that if you want a vehicle that has great handling, driving dynamics and "reasonable" comfort levels, the Focus is a good choice. Nevertheless, comfort is not its strength and forte.

I don't know if you are looking at the Focus Sport hatchback or Titanium sedan. For the Titanium sedan, the suspension is very responsive. The ride feels great if you are into fast n furious or sporty handling due to the suspension setup or tuning that doesn't feel floaty. All the imperfections, undulations, unevenness of the roads, the suspension of the Focus will transmit all these more effectively to the cabin when compared to vehicles with comfort-tuned suspension. The Focus will still be rock steady and won't bounce up and down like a spring when going over bad or imperfect roads in comparison to vehicles with more "springy" suspension. Good for handling but not so comfortable. With more comfort-tuned suspensions, the vehicle will be more floaty and bounce more as they soak up the irregularities on the roads. The ride will be more comfortable with these comfort-tuned suspensions.

Also, the noises that the suspension (of the Focus) transmit into the cabin are quite loud in comparison to say the Nissan Sylphy. Whenever the vehicle goes over bad or uneven roads, the noises of the suspension, a loud knock or loud thud when the tyres roll over some badly formed tarmac, the sound of the suspension appears to be louder than some suspensions in other vehicles.

These are just my observations or experience of the Ford Focus Mk3 Titanium. There is a sacrifice in comfort levels which is inevitable, due to the increased levels of handling and driving dynamics. If you want a more comfortable and supple ride, you have to forgo a little performance.

So in the end, it depends on what you want. Since you are selecting between the Focus and Golf, I presume comfort may not be a priority for you, particularly the comfort of the passengers sitting at the back seat of the vehicle.

Do check out the VW forum first before putting any money down on either. smile.gif

Correct. And I thought the MKII was noisy. LOL.

Installing some insulating material like Dynamat over the wheel well should help reduce the noise. smile.gif
