Can anyone comment on the disadvantage of a diesel engine? I understand that it is louder, greater vibration and less efficient than a petrol engine?

Diesels don't rev as high as petrol engines, so those of you who enjoy the kick of revving to 6,000rpm will not like this characteristic.

Your assertion of diesels being louder, greater vibration and less efficient than petrol engines no longer hold true for modern diesel-powered vehicles.

Some of the following articles might change your opinion of modern diesel engines, especially for cars coming from Europe. New generation of diesels boast excellent refinement and are very responsive to drive.

I also heard that the twin-clutch system has lotsa reliability problem, this is coming from the mechanic of Volvo who services the new s40.

Can't comment on this, but the Focus TDCi and the S40 Powershift does share the same twin clutch transmission.

Would the back seat comparable with Mazda3 since both sits on the same platform?

I have only tested the Focus, so I can't comment on its capabilities against the Mazda3. However, the latest issue of Top Gear Malaysia pitted the Mazda3 2.0 against the Focus sedan.

Traction control systems are really only necessary if the car has very high power enough to easily overwhelm tyre grip on heavy throttle.

I disagree on this though - TCS is needed if the car has Goodyear NCT5 tyres! smile_wink.gif

I really love this new Focus spec. All the driving assist features are there ABS+EBD+EBA+TCS+ESP. Price wise is unbelievable. Power and economy are there. Who says you can have it all. Great job AC!

I wonder if the car truly gives 320Nm worth of torque .... not because it can't but because our diesel grade ain't great. Where was the 320Nm dyno-ed and what fuel was used?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shud be around that figure + the add overboost to 340nm.

Whatever it is, its sure will kick ass those asthmatic Japs petrol power vvti/mivec/ivtec which need to be rev all the way up to 5-6k rpm for decent shove. (very bad for fc + so not real world usable...who the heck want to rev 5-6k rpm whole day long??)

if you're already saying that about the jap cars, then you'll love the noise insulation in the TDCi. If you really shove the pedal then yes you'll hear the engine roar, but my goodness when you're cruising, the insulation is pretty good. At idle its even quieter, all this in a diesel.

Although it isnt as quiet as the lowest spec Camry, but thats stretching it abit.
Washing a car should be an artform, not a chore.

Hi All,

Never owned a diesel car before, hence, curious about the following:

1) If the car gives out 320NM of torque @ around 2000rpm, and say I'm cruising about 100kmh, would the rpm for 100kmh be around 2500rpm and hence, the car would have reach max torque?

2) Would I be correct to assume most petrol cars fuel efficiency rpm be about 2500 - 3000 rpm? Would it be the same for the focus tdci also?

Thanks in advance.

That's when you need the 6th gear.
