I've had some experience with the E46 325i SMG and that is one hell of a
car. The handling is just superb and the torque is a bit more immediate
becoz of the SMG gearbox.

The S40 is no where near the handling capabilities of the 325. But then,
there is a huge price difference between the 2 cars, so can't really
complain.

Maybe a better comparison for the 325 would be a V50 T5 AWD ... but then,
we won't be getting our hands on one of those in Malaysia anytime soon,
would we?

Just my dua sen ...

"Maybe a better comparison for the 325 would be a V50 T5 AWD"

kfvwong,

Why do we need V50 T5 AWD to compare against the 325i? Is it due to the
price factor? Or the AWD?

Do you think it is valid to compare the 325i against the locally
available V50 T5? Still with a huge price difference tho.

How is the SMG in comparison to the conventional box?

Cheers.

Is the S40 2.4i here CBU or CKD?

I saw the picture in volvo website that it comes with sunroof and GSM
phone, does the local model comes with these 2 features too?

Saint'ee,

The primary reason I suggested to compare the V50 T5 AWD against the 325i
is due to the closer price bracket. Also, the AWD would probably offer
better handling performance that is closer to the 325i. This is just my
personal opinion/guess, since I've never tried the AWD.

I've tested the locally available V50 T5. It is a really really really
good car, but I still feel that the handling needs to be much better to
fully maximise the potential of the car. No point having a fast car that
can't go round corners! ;)

Nevertheless, as you had rightly pointed out, there is still a huge price
difference.

My personal conclusion ... unless u go up and down Genting every week,
the S40 or V50 is still a RELATIVELY better buy.

Comparing the SMG with the conventional box, well .. the SMG offers much
more immediate torque. And the faster you drive, the faster the gear
changes. So, if you are driving through a stretch that combines twisty
and open roads, the SMG does a good job of letting you change gears and
power out of the corners quickly.

On the downside, however, the SMG takes a lot of getting used to. I had
it for 2 weeks (it was my brother's car) and at the end of that period, I
still could not master the transmission. Very often, there would be jerks
when I switched gears, similar to when a learner driver doesn't know how
to release the clutch smoothly. And it was definitely the driver (ME!)
problem, since my brother didn't have any problems driving the car
smoothly!

My 2 cents ...

alfred,

The S40 available locally are CKD units. Don't think it comes with
sunroof and built-in GSM phone.

I could be wrong tho......

Cheers.

Thanks sengthee

I went to SM yesterday to test drive the S40 2.4i.. quite a few things
are not available in the local spec..ie sunroof, GSM phone, child seats,
keyless entry...

I like Volvo except 3 things: resale value, power, handling.

I read from the figures, it says 0-100km/h is 8.9 sec, but when I test
drove it, it doesn't feel like at that speed.

I compare it to BMW, there is a big difference in the quick reponsive
performance & superb handling. BMW has a significant thumbs up!

I can't make up my mind now, I want BMW engine + supension but in S40
body...which is impossible..

unless I can compromise on certain things..Crying

If the S40 or V50 drives and handles like a BMW, we wont be getting them
at current prices. Probably Volvo would add another RM30-40K to each
model.

I had test driven the V50 many months ago. Though not BMW level, the
handling is good and the quality of materials used is of very high
standard.

Alfred,

Don't we wish we had that option! The only E90 i would go for would be the
325, but thats a whopping RM318k, so obviously it is not exactly on fair
comparison terms with the S40.

If money wasn't the issue for me, the 325 would have been it, but ahem..
economics dictated otherwise.

The S40 is a very good compromise in my opinion. As you said, compromises!

Good luck in your decision making.

Are you sure the S40 does not have Keyless Entry....????

and Childseat, GSM phone, Xenon light..... all are optinal items that
you can add on your new car purchase list if you have $$$ & the car
will not selling at rm +-190K.....

If you wanted the BMW Engine + Suspension with S40 body, you can
always ask Volvo Malaysia to bring one of S40 T5 in for you and then
you will paying some thing closed to E90 325.......

I am considering to buy a S40 too, according to FA S222, the buyer
actually can't opt for the keyless entry, rain sensor or bi-xenon,
although we are willing to ay for the extras. Actually, can any Si-fu
tell me is S40 worth buying compare to a used C200K(year2001) or E46 318i
2.0(year 2003 or 2004), actually the price range is around there.

thank you.
