New Proton X70

Shah Alam, 07 September, 2018 – The new Proton SUV was viewed by some members of the press at a special preview arranged at the Proton Design Centre – the new name for the SUV, which is based on the Geely Boyoe, is Proton X70, and it is open for booking at selected dealers with immediate effect. The booking fee is RM1,000, and it from what I have seen of the new vehicle, it might be a good idea to take a leap of faith and  quickly run over to a Proton dealer and sign up for one if you have been thinking about getting one. After all, you will have nothing to lose if you do not like it later, as the booking fee is refundable.

PROTON SUV Rear Grey

In a nutshell, the Proton X70 is a Geely Boyue with some minor renditions to the face to make it a Proton. There is a new front grille which is supposed to represent a bow with a Proton logo sitting in the centre that fits exactly where the Boyue grille would have been placed, and some minor changes to the front bumper – renditions that are easy to produce and fit. I hail this as a very logical move, as it does not make sense to make complicated re-modeling changes that cost an arm and a leg to implement.

Let’s look at the specifications of the new Proton X70 – it appears that there are three or four variants to choose from – the actual specifications are not clear as yet, and of course no prices are announced as yet. However, there are some key specifications that are for sure, and we will share them with you, our readers.

PROTON SUV Interior

We know that the engine of the Proton X70 is a 1.8 litre turbo-charged unit with a claimed output of 135 kW (about 180 horsepower) and 285 Nm of torque. The RX70 features All-Wheel-Drive (AWD), and the transmission is a 6-speed automatic.

Suspension appears to be Macpherson struts in front, while the rear looks like a multi-link arrangement with coil springs all round. Ground clearance is excellent, perhaps around 180mm to 190mm. based on my estimate.

PROTON SUV Front Grey

Inside, the X70 is well appointed, with Nappa leather seats and a typical SUV-type of configuration with split and folding seats offering the usual versatility in stowage space. The spare tyre is a space saver. The dashboard is pretty neat, with soft-touch padding in the right places, so it looks great. I also understand that the top-of-the range X70 comes with a panoramic sunroof.

New Proton X70
New Proton X70

The overall look, feel and touch of the Proton X70 is very premium, leading one to wonder if perhaps the selling price might escalate to too high a level. My own impression, just based on looks, touch and feel, (but not driving, as there was no test drive session), is that it is on par with, or even surpasses some of the better-known brands of medium-sized SUV’s available in Malaysia now.

We also understand that the Proton X70 will initially come from China, but plans are underway to go into local CKD operations by the first quarter of 2019.

BMW has launched the first-ever BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo in Malaysia. The 630i GT is not only locally assembled, it also marks BMW Group’s commitment to growing its operations and investment in Malaysia.

BMW Malaysia, 630i Gran Turismo Launch 2018As the spiritual successor to the 5 Series GT, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is based on the current 5 Series but is longer (+155 mm), wider (+34 mm) and taller (+59 mm) at 5,091 mm (length) x 1,902 mm (width) x 1,538 mm (height), and sits on a stretched wheelbase of 3,070 mm (+99 mm). To BMW, the 6 Series GT is suppose to set a new benchmark for unrivaled space, comfort, and functionality in the luxury vehicle class.

BMW Group Malaysia, 6 Series GT Launch, Harald Hoelzl, Managing DirectorMr. Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director and CEO of BMW Group Malaysia said, “The BMW 6 Series GT adds another dimension and offering to our modern luxury product portfolio. The new vehicle offers impressive functionality with a new award-winning body format and the high standards of driving comfort and spaciousness are among the features that defined the character of this distinctive vehicle type.”

Utilising the BMW EfficientLightweight technology, the BMW 6 Series GT’s intelligent lightweight construction and increased use of aluminium and high-strength steel types for the body and chassis components help reduce its weight by an average of approximately 150 kilograms compared to the predecessor model.

BMW 630i GT Adaptive LED Headlights, Malaysia 2018With the M Sport kit, the 630i GT looks nearly identical to the current G30 5 Series save for a more aggressive brow of the Adaptive LED headlights and slight differences in the M Sport front bumper. When viewed from the side, the 6 Series GT is unique with its coupe-like roofline that sweeps gently down to the tail. Not immediately noticeable is the doors with frameless windows. The low-slung profile of the car, coupled with active air flap control, air curtains, air breathers and an active rear spoiler (which activates when the car hits 110 km/h) help to lower its drag coefficient to 0.25 (compared to its predecessor’s 0.29).

BMW 6 Series GT, Rear Luggage Space, Malaysia Launch 2018At the rear, the LED tail lights feature a 3D design with the signature BMW ‘L’ shape. The body construction at the back allows for a large, convenient rear opening with a maximum view through the rear window. The single-section tailgate of the BMW 6 Series GT is opened and closed electrically, with a Comfort Access function that even enables hands-free operation through foot movement. The luggage compartment volume has increased by 100 litres to 610 litres compared to its predecessor; which can be expanded to 1,800 litres by folding down the seats using an electrical control function from the boot. The loading sill has also been lowered by five centimetres to the level of the luggage compartment floor.

“The new model will introduce a breath of fresh air to the luxury executive class, as the only vehicle in its segment that offers the spaciousness of a modern Gran Turismo, the travel comfort of a luxury class sedan, and the dynamism and aesthetic appeal that befit a large classy coupé,” added Hoelzl.

BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, Rear Legroom, Malaysia Launch 2018With its larger dimensions, the 6 Series GT interior is more spacious; and with improved headroom despite having a lower roofline than the 5 Series GT, courtesy of an optimised seat system. Passengers also get to enjoy electrically-controlled window blinds at the rear, four-zone climate control, as well as a panoramic sunroof and Harman Kardon surround sound system.

The 6 Series GT cockpit is similar to the 5 Series: driver-focused with ergonomic arrangement of the controls. Features include the iDrive system with Touch Controller on the centre console, Control Display 10.25″ high resolution touchscreen, enhanced voice control and BMW Gesture Control, as well as the new-generation BMW Head-Up Display. The M Sport Steering Wheel, Sensatec Leather dashboard, and Fine Wood ‘Fineline’ Ridge with Pearl Gloss Chrome complete the stylish look and feel for a premium driving experience.

In the centre console is a new integrated smartphone holder which allows wireless, inductive charging for mobile phones as well as the BMW Display Key.

The driver assistance systems in the BMW 6 Series GT make use of the stereo camera, including radar and ultrasonic sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. The semi-autonomous driving functions include Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation, Crossing Traffic Warning, Speed Limit Info, and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function.

The BMW ConnectedDrive digital personal mobility assistant will help drivers reach their destination easily and with minimal stress. It features the convenient function of linking calendar entries from a smartphone to be used for planning the route planning and calculating the ideal departure time.

BMW 630i Gran Turismo M Sport, Malaysia Launch 2018The 630i GT gets a 2.0L four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine with 258 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm. Mated with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, the car is capable of a 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 6.3 seconds. Official average fuel consumption is 6.6 litres per 100 km.

The BMW 6 Series GT is equipped with Adaptive suspension with Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension on both axles. The electronically controlled dampers increase ride comfort and enhance the vehicle’s handling, along with wheel-specific control that counterbalances uneven loads. The two-axle air suspension allows the vehicle’s ride height to be adjusted manually, i.e. ground clearance can be increased by 20 mm at the touch of a button to negotiate dirt tracks or steep ramps.

The vehicle can also be lowered by 10 mm either manually by again pushing a button, or automatically when SPORT mode is engaged via the Driving Experience Control switch, or when the car’s speed exceeds 120 km/h, in order to reduce drag. The 630i Gran Turismo comes with 20″ M light-alloy double-spoke 648 M wheels in Bicolour (with mixed tyres).

Exterior colour choices are Alpine White, Bluestone, Carbon Black and Sophisto Grey, matched with the interior colour offering of Leather Dakota Black. Specifically with the Carbon Black and Sophisto Grey colour options, the added option of Leather Dakota Cognac is also possible.

The 630i GT brings BMW Group Malaysia’s porfolio of locally assembled models to nine models and eleven variants. It will will be available at all authorised BMW dealers nationwide from tomorrow (Saturday, 8 September 2018) and will retail for an estimated RM450,000.

Included is the Premium Ownership experience which comes with:

  • BMW 5-Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty with Free Scheduled Service Program
  • BMW 2-Year/ 24 Month Tyre Warranty Program for its Run Flat Tyre offering and services
  • BMW Roadside Assistance and Accident Hotline

L-R: Scania Southeast Asia Presales Director Tom Kuiphuis presenting the FMS Competition award to Mohd Faizal Mohd Rasul and Magistrate Tuan Mohd Hafiz Mohd Noor who represented the Bintulu High Court

Scania Malaysia sees growth potential in Sarawak due to the improvement in infrastructure, especially with the on-going Pan Borneo Highway project that will improve connectivity between towns in Sarawak and lead to an increase in the movement of goods and people within the state.

As such, Scania Malaysia is strengthening its services and support infrastructure in Sarawak to ensure that it is capable of supporting its customers in the state. At the same time, Scania is ensuring that drivers are trained to achieve the best fuel economy, safety and performance.

To encourage efficient driving, Scania Malaysia had been holding the Scania Fleet Management System (FMS) competition. In Sarawak, the Scania FMS award was presented to the Bintulu High Court – represented by Magistrate Muhammad Hafiz Mohd Noor and Mohd Faizal Mohd Rasul, at the Scania Sales and Service Centre in Bintulu. Why the Bintulu High Court? Because it uses a Scania bus as a mobile court room to cover the rural areas.

The Scania FMS gathers data on driver and vehicle performance and is a total solutions approach offered by Scania for its customers to achieve the best profitability in their business.

The FMS connects the vehicle to the operator’s office and helps identify and use the key details such as vehicle data, fuel consumption, fleet position and driver performance (coasting, heavy braking, speeding or idling). Used together with the Scania Driver Services, which consists of Driver Training & Driver Coaching, this information will help give operators a clearer understanding of their fleet performance and costs. Making use of the information available, the fleet operators thus can increase the productivity of the fleet, achieve fuel efficiency and eventually reduce the cost of operations.

The Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department team and their Scania truck at the Scania (Malaysia) Bintulu centre.

The Scania Sales and Service Centre in Bintulu is equipped with eight workshop bays and manned by nine staff. It is responsible for truck, bus, coach and engine sales, while offering workshop services, contract services and financial services, as well as driver and connected services.

Scania also has a mobile workshop based in Kuching that is able to offer a full spectrum of maintenance facilities for its vehicles as it is equipped like a full-fledged Scania workshop, including special tools, work bench, air compressor, waste oil disposal, full tool box, hoists and lifting equipment.

“Scania places tremendous effort on the after-sales service support for our customers and our Bintulu workshop is strategically located and equipped to offer top quality service and support for our customers,” said Scania Southeast Asia’s Presales Director Tom Kuiphuis.

Kuiphuis said Scania’s aim is to help customers achieve maximum uptime and optimum fuel economy for their vehicles, while maintaining the best total operating economy.

Additionally, Scania has a 24/7 Scania Assistance standby service van based in Bintulu for roadside assistance anywhere in the state, which is manned by highly-skilled and experienced personnel to ensure that vehicles always operate at maximum uptime.

Complementing that is the Scania repair and maintenance contracts that help to ensure that the vehicles or engines are in the safest possible hands and everything from powertrain protection to full bumper-to-bumper coverage or bodywork and auxiliary equipment are all covered.

The repair and maintenance contracts offer early detection of deviations to secure product performance and availability to avoid unplanned interruptions to daily operations. It also provides access to the right skill set to care for technically advanced vehicles, secured product performance by always using Scania Parts, roadside assistance 24/7 and a plannable cash flow due to known cost through the entire contract period.

Further, Scania offers flexible maintenance plans that are tailored to fit the operational needs of customers with vehicles spending less time idle at the workshop based on when the operating data indicates that maintenance is needed.

For fleet owners, Scania Fleet Care takes care of the whole fleet and makes sure each vehicle is performing at peak condition and maintain maximum uptime, all under a dedicated Fleet Manager for central co-ordination and service planning.

Many people would choose the C-HR based on its looks alone - the fact that it is a Toyota counts too, of course.

After a whole lot of buzz, with much anticipation as the nation waited impatiently for the Toyota C-HR, the much awaited SUV is here. Many people see it as a competitor to the Honda HR-V, which has been a runaway success since its launch, carving out a new sub-segment for FWD compact SUV’s while at the same time eating into the market share of compact and medium-sized sedans. The astute pricing of the HR-V, in addition to its spacious build, plus the Honda brand, were all part of the success factor.

Insofar as the size and drive-train specifications are concerned, the Toyota C-HR is indeed in the same ballpark as the Honda HR-V. The C-HR is powered by a 1.8 litre DOHC engine with Dual VVTi (which means Double Over Head Camshaft and Variable Valve Timing for both inlet and exhaust), developing 140 PS at 6,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 171Nm at 4,000 rpm. In comparison, the Honda HR-V also develops 140PS at 6,500 rpm, and has marginally higher maximum torque of 172 Nm at 4,300 rpm. Short of splitting hairs, I would say the two are the same in terms of power, bearing in mind that when we drive ‘normally’, we are perhaps only calling upon roughly half the total power available, and so the one or two ponies at the top end does not make any difference.

Even the transmission is very similar, both being Constantly Variable Transmissions (CVT), both with seven virtual speeds, and both driving the front wheels of the respective vehicles.

In the price department (we are now looking at post-GST, and before SST), there is approximately a RM20k price difference, based on the current price of RM137+k for the C-HR, versus the RM117+k for the Honda HR-V. The new prices post SST are yet to be announced, but since the Toyota is fully imported (CBU), it will be higher.

2018 Toyota C-HR has a very appealing shape.

Given the price difference, the Toyota C-HR’s sales numbers, whilst it is enjoying brisk sales numbers, will not be at the same level as the Honda HR-V, but the people at Toyota already knew that when they launched the C-HR, and seem quite happy with the current numbers.

I took the Toyota C-HR from UMW Toyota Motor recently for a road test, and I wanted to see what makes it tick, and here is my report:-

In terms of looks, the Toyota C-HR will appeal to the more ‘flamboyant’ types who want to stand out from the usual crowd – the C-HR designers appear to have chosen form over function, at least in terms of the exterior and silhouette – the overall effect is nothing short of spectacular. Thus, it is my conclusion that one of the purchase reasons for the C-HR would be its looks. Exterior specifications include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED Tail and Stop lamps, puddle lamps on the side mirrors, with auto-fold and turn indicators, and fog lamps at the front and rear.

Driver's compartment, C-HR

Inside, the C-HR is well appointed, with a combination of leather and plastic trim, and a wrap-around dashboard with piano-black trim that extends down into the centre console, in other words, it has a pleasant interior that looks good. The Optitron instrument panel provides an analogue readout, and also has a 4.2 –inch digital Multi-information Display (MID) for driving information. The steering wheel gets an attractive ‘half-leather’ treatment, and the gear lever shaft also gets a nice and sporty leather boot. An electronic parking brake saves some valuable space. Smart Entry and keyless start are standard. For entertainment, there is a FVD-AUX system with 6 speakers, while Dual Zone automatic Climate Control is standard. One small niggling point is that there is no rear blower for the air-conditioning.

Passenger room is decent, and the interior is comfortable – seats are comfortable and provide good thigh support (a strong point with all Toyota vehicles), and there is even a ‘ta pau’ hook attached to the headrest of the front passenger seat. The driver gets mechanical seat height adjustment in addition to rake and reach. There is ample leg room for both front and rear passengers.

Front passenger compartment looks good.

The rear luggage space is reasonable, but appears to be a little smaller than the competition, despite a space saver spare tyre. The explanation for the smaller rear luggage space is that the C-HR has independent rear suspension, which undoubtedly contributes greatly to driving dynamics, but needs more room than the torsion beam arrangement that HR-V has. The C-HR’s rear suspension is actually stiffened with the use of a rear sub-frame – this takes up space under the rear floor, but the additional rigidity coupled with the independent rear pays off when you drive the C-HR. Without a doubt, it corners extremely well, and an added bonus is a quieter interior thanks to the rigidity which reduces the sound transfer from the rear wheels into the cabin.

Three Driving Modes for you to select from, depending on your mood

While driving the Toyota C-HR around, some strange thoughts began to flood my mind – it felt somewhat familiar, and it wasn’t long before I realized that the C-HR probably got a whole bunch of bits from the Corolla Altis parts bin. Just look at the drive train – 1.8 litre engine driving the front wheels – through an excellent CVT that felt so familiar – it is the same configuration as the Altis, down to the front and rear sub-frames, four-wheel independent suspension, etc, etc. The C-HR retails at a premium over the  Altis, but this is due to the fact that it is a CBU but it is comforting to know that the mechanicals are similar. There are three driving modes, Eco, Normal, and Sport, easily activated, and each one changes the behavior of the engine and transmission to suit the situation. I found Eco mode was all I actually needed for normal driving – the Normal and Sport Mode provides more excitement if you want to have some spirited driving. The CVT is one of the best in the industry, and I remember I had lots of good things to say about it when it introduced with the Altis some years ago.

Engine and drive train is similar to the Altis 1.8.

The C-HR gives an excellent account of itself when pushed hard through some winding roads – As mentioned above, the four–wheel independent suspension works very well, and despite the higher ride height when compared to a normal sedan, you don’t feel any lack of confidence when driving it. Anyway, in case you lose it, the C-HR comes with ASEAN NCAP five star rating, seven airbags, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control system (TCS). In addition, there is a reversing camera, Front and rear parking sensors, Hill Assist Control (HAC), and Auto Brake Hold. On the road, the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) helps to alert you to other vehicles in your blind spots. The BSM also features Cross Traffic Alert, which tells you if a car is approaching from the sides behind you, a very useful feature when parked in blind spots in car parks. Brakes are ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear, which I like.

We did not finish the entire tank of fuel that was provided with the test car, but the fuel consumption during our test drive session was pretty good. I tracked the fuel consumption on the MID, and got 8.2 and 8.6 kilometres per litre, but that was in city driving.  Depending on individual driving styles, the numbers will vary, and extra-urban consumption would be much better.  As a point in passing, the C-HR is about 100 kg heavier than the Altis.  A plus point is that the engine has good enough power to propel the C-HR around – throttle feel is very light and you get the impression that the engine is working effortlessly – perhaps the reason why I felt so comfortable driving even in Eco mode.

8.2 km per litre for city driving.

All things said and done, if you are looking at the Toyota C-HR, you are probably looking at the Honda HR-V too. Now the sixty-four dollar question would be, “Which one should I choose?”  In paragraph two above, I have mentioned that insofar as the drive train is concerned, the two are in the same ballpark. In terms of specifications, the two are very similar, with some small differences, but both are just as robust, and both are quite complete. In terms of interior space, the HR-V might have some advantage for the rear stowage area, thanks to its torsion beam design, but the C-HR with its independent rear suspension would handle better at higher speeds.

The final factor would be the price, and this decision will depend on your affordability, your brand preference, and also the looks, depending on whether your head or heart rules.

Rawang, 3 September 2018 – Perodua has announced its new prices for its models, based on the implementation of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) from 1 September 2018 and has noted that selected models see a reduction in price of between 1% – 3% compared to when the 6% Goods and Services Tax (GST) was enforced.

Earlier on, there were concerns from consumers that the implementation of the SST, which is rated at 10% for sales (and 6% for services), will cause car retail prices to increase when compared to the 6% GST. But because GST is a multi-level tax that applies to the entire supply chain, it has worked out to be more than SST in certain cases.

Perodua Sales, Dato’ Dr Zahari Husin, Managing Director, Malaysia“Based on the new tax structure, almost all Perodua models see price reductions compared to the GST price structure,” said Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd Managing Director Dato’ Dr Zahari Husin.

The tax holiday in the past 3 months pending the introduction of SST had caused an extraordinary increase in vehicle sales, and Perodua is working hard to deliver vehicles in a timely manner. “We wish to thank all Malaysians, especially our 3.3 million valued customers who have chosen Perodua as their brand of choice. We will continue to offer the best value in the Malaysian market with our new prices,” said Dato’ Dr Zahari.

“On Perodua’s service and parts, we will continue to give competitive pricing to our customers. We truly appreciate the unwavering support the people have shown for our products and services, and will continue to improve ourselves for our customers.”

“Please visit any of our sales and service outlets nationwide and speak to our authorised sales and service advisors to learn more about our products and services,” said Dato’ Dr Zahari.
