The Lee Ting San Group of Companies (LTS Group) is expanding its fleet with new Volvo FM prime movers as part of its fleet replacement exercise. LTS Group is one of the largest logistics companies that provides transportation, container haulage, warehousing and maintenance services around Penang, Northern Malaysia, KLIA and Johor.
Lee Kah Chye, Group CEO of LTS Group accepting a FM scale model from Mitch Peden, Managing Director of Volvo Malaysia to mark the handover ceremony.
The group has purchased 38 units of the Volvo FM370 4x2T RAS prime mover to support its nationwide and cross-border transportation services. Volvo Trucks had recently delivered 20 units of the new trucks in Prai, Penang, and will deliver the remaining units in early 2020. With this purchase, LTS Group will have a total of 80 Volvo trucks in its fleet, out of 280 prime movers.
Established in 1974, LTS Group started operating with only one truck driven by the founder himself – Mr Lee Kah Chye, who is now also Group CEO. As business grew, the company started purchasing heavy-duty trucks, which led it to become a Volvo Trucks’ customer 18 years ago with the Volvo FM10 model. The company has grown to a staff-size of over 500 and has a sizable fleet of trucks that includes rigid trucks and trailers.
With the purchase of the new Volvo FM prime movers, LTS Group is able to begin its fleet replacement exercise to achieve better efficiency and lower operating costs. The new trucks will be used for container haulage business for LTS Logistics (PG) Sdn Bhd, for both long and short haul deliveries of cargo.
Furthermore, all the new Volvo FM trucks purchased by LTS Group are fitted with Volvo’s proprietary telematics system – Dynafleet, and are covered under the Volvo Gold Service Agreement which includes the benefits of Volvo Uptime Promise.
Dynafleet is beneficial to Volvo customers who want to achieve greater profitability and efficiency through three key service areas i.e. fuel and environment, positioning and messaging. The onboard Driver Coaching function provides essential fuel saving tips to the driver. Meanwhile, the Volvo Uptime Promise is the only feature in the industry in Malaysia that compensates customers monetarily for certain duration of downtime.
Volvo Trucks’ Uptime Promise is a unique feature which provides monetary compensation to customers who has a truck on a breakdown time that exceeds Volvo Trucks’ committed time to put the truck back on the road. More than financial compensation for truck downtime, Uptime Promise also offers benefits including safe and dependable repairs carried out by highly skilled Volvo technicians, minimum loss of time and income, and maximum truck uptime.
Lee also added that his company’s satisfaction with Volvo Trucks’ aftermarket support had prompted them to take up the Volvo Gold Service Agreement with Uptime Promise for all the new FM trucks.
Lee shared: “As a logistics company which started 45 years ago and since then has been serving the needs of hundreds of clients throughout Malaysia, we have definitely gone through many market changes and seen new developments in the industry.
“We understand that the industry needs to evolve for businesses like ours to grow. That is why our approach now is to be a forward-thinking transportation company that is willing to invest into technology and innovation, in terms of integrated logistics system, warehouse management system, telematics, and RFID tracking system for our goods. This is the reason for our purchase and we look forward to putting to good use Volvo’s Dynafleet to help us increase our effectiveness.”
Mitch Peden, Managing Director of Volvo Malaysia commented, “The delivery of the trucks fulfills Volvo’s commitment in helping LTS Group on achieving more productivity, competence and safety, as the Volvo FM offers the highest levels of flexibility and transport efficiency. All these are crucial for boosting profitability and business growth for our customers.”
Peden added, “Volvo Uptime Promise is designed to give customers extra protection against unplanned standstills and is offered as part of our continuous customer satisfaction enhancement effort. We would like to thank LTS Group for their loyalty, trust and support to Volvo Trucks. We believe this truly highlight our valued relationship with our customer and we will support them whenever and wherever it is needed.”
“While the Volvo FM is productive and economical for the customer, it also offers the driver a comfortable new working environment and enhanced safety,” said Peden.
The Volvo FM features a spacious and ergonomically designed cabin, a clearly laid out dashboard with all the buttons, controls and functions within easy reach, and adjustable seats with lumbar support for a more comfortable driving position.
The Volvo FM also features the groundbreaking Volvo Dynamic Steering system that boosts the truck’s first-class driving properties.

Ford and Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC), its distribution partner in Malaysia, recently launched and conducted its flagship safe driver training programme in Sabah. The Ford Driving Skills For Life (DSFL) programme is part of the brand’s efforts to promote safe driving behaviour and road safety awareness in Malaysia.
A total of four training sessions were organised over a weekend in mid-November, which were held in conjunction with the ‘Carlist.my DRIVE: Off-road Edition 2019’ event, to allow the public to learn about the DSFL programme and to gain safe-driving information.
The DSFL programme is free-of-charge for the participants as it aims to raise awareness of road safety, and aid in the reduction of traffic fatalities and injuries, by helping educate drivers on the skills and techniques needed to drive more safely.
Over 80 Ford customers and members of the public participated in a half-day workshop which consisted of both classroom and practical hands-on sessions. The classroom and practical sessions took place at SDAC Kota Kinabalu and Likas Stadium respectively.
Malaysia has one of the highest vehicle ownership rates in the region. [1] And while East Malaysia has fewer vehicles on the road, sadly, fatal road accidents are on the rise, with non-compliance to traffic and road safety regulations considered the main contributing factor. [2]
“At Ford and SDAC, we are committed to equipping Malaysians with safe driving knowledge, and that’s why we have decided to bring this programme to East Malaysia,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, Managing Director, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion. “Ford’s DSFL programme provides the know-how to help drivers understand a number of unpredictable scenarios that could happen on the road, while also equipping them with the tools to tackle potentially dangerous situations accordingly.”
The workshops addressed various driver risks with training focused on four main areas:
Distractions – Making smart decisions behind the wheel to limit distractions such as mobile phone usage, and staying focused on the task of driving
Hazard recognition – How to scan the road ahead for potential dangers, particularly when approaching intersections and safety zones
Speed and space management – Learning how to adjust speed to maintain safe space around, ahead, and behind a vehicle while avoiding being rear-ended
Vehicle handling – Understanding the vehicle’s capability and learning to better control it by leveraging its safety features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Semi-Automatic Parallel Parking (SAPP), Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning
An emphasis on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or medication was also incorporated into the programme. This included having participants wear specially designed goggles that help simulate the experience of driving while movement, coordination, and alertness are impaired.
According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report, around 1.35 million people lose their lives in road accidents each year, while between 20 and 50 million others suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability. [3] Worryingly, WHO’s statistics indicate that road traffic injuries are currently the leading cause of death in the world for children and young adults aged between 5-29.
Now in its 16th year, Ford Driving Skills for Life has provided free training to more than one million newly-licensed drivers in 40 countries, which equates to an investment of over $50 million, highlighting Ford’s commitment to promoting safety on the road.

L-R: Gary Cheah, Commercial Products Manager, Commercial Business; Choong Kum Choy, Head of Retail and Commercial Business; Mohd Pauzi Mohd Din, Senior Technical Service Advisor, Retail and Commercial Business with the range of Petron lubricants, including HTP.
Petron Malaysia has launched a new range of engine oils and specialty lubricants and fluids specifically with a High Temperature Protection (HTP) formulation. This new range which includes engine oils, automatic transmission fluid (ATF), brake and clutch fluid (DOT 4) and grease, add to the extensive range of lubricants and fluids currently available.
Notably, Petron made mention of its engine oils i.e. Petron Blaze Racing HTP and Petron Rev-X Turbo HTP for petrol and diesel engines respectively. Both fully synthetic lubricants use polyalphaolefin (PAO) as its base oil (80% of content) which is a high-quality Group IV base oil. PAO is synthetic hydrocarbons with uniform molecules and high viscosity index and does not contain sulphur and nitrogen. This means the base oil has better oxidation and thermal resistance properties than other base oils, and when coupled with the additives formula, the oil will meet the most severe and stringent requirements for high performance engines.
As a result, the viscous and lubricating characteristics of Petron Blaze Racing HTP will not deteriorate significantly from extended use as it is designed to better protect the engine against corrosion and wear. It has been tested and certified to API SN, MB Approval 229.5, MB Approval 229.3, and Porsche A40 specifications.
Meanwhile, Petron Rev-X Turbo HTP is designed for naturally-aspirated, turbocharged or supercharged high performance heavy duty diesel engines. Its stable nature provides for extended engine protection, and better engine efficiency by preventing soot and piston deposits and generally lowering hydrocarbon emissions. It is approved and licensed according to API CJ-4/SN, MAN 3575, Cummins CES 20081, MB Approval 228.31, Volvo VDS-4, and Mack EO-O Premium Plus specifications.
“We continuously innovate and improve our product offerings as part of our promise to provide top quality petroleum products. The Petron HTP is specially formulated to give improved engine cleanliness, efficiency and engine protection – thus offering a superior choice to our customers in terms of better protection, better performance and more savings,” said Choong Kum Choy, Petron Head of Retail and Commercial Business.
“The products underscore our passion to provide the best lubricating solutions to our valued customers. Petron HTP engine oils meet the most stringent requirements for gasoline and diesel engines, and is approved and certified according to the specifications of the API and SAE. We are also focused on giving the best protection to other components of a vehicle with the concurrent launch of HTP gear oil, brake fluid and greases,” Choong added.
The Petron HTP range can be found at selected Petron service stations natiowide, in Shopee, and Petron authorised distributors and workshops.
Established in 1997, the Rainforest Challenge (RFC) is one of the world’s most gruelling off-roading events that gives those who survive it bragging rights. In conjunction with the RFC, Petron Malaysia, which has been supporting this event for a few years now, organised the Petron TriAction Advantage Performance Media Road Trip to give some members of the media a taste of one of the Top 10 Toughest Motor Races in the world. Petron is the official diesel sponsor (Petron Turbo Diesel Euro 5) and engine oil (Petron Rev-X) partner of the 2019 Rainforest Challenge Grand Finale in Malaysia.
The Rainforest Challenge Grand Finale is in the state of Kelantan from 29 November to 9 December 2019. This represents the final event from the RFC Global Series (RFCGS), which is a worldwide off-road racing circuit spanning 25 nations with 45 events. This year, the event focuses on racing aspects with at least 50 Special Stages (SS), a record for 4×4 racing. The route will take the participants from Kota Bharu to Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai, and will end at Gua Musang with a 2-day carnival (8 & 9 Dec).
The Petron annual road trip gathered 15 editors and journalists in Kelantan to join the competition’s Grand Finale, where we witnessed the flag-off of the participants at the Hotel Grand Riverview Kota Bahru. A total of 450 participants from 20 countries are taking part in this challenging 4×4 competition, braving through one of Malaysia’s densest tropical forests during the monsoon season.
Over the weekend, the media joined RFC’s qualifying rounds (or the Prologue Stage) at Bukit Panau in Pasir Mas. Here, the participants’ vehicles were preloaded with Petron Turbo Diesel Euro 5 for the drivers to tackle nature and test their prowess in manoeuvering the hilly slopes, uneven terrain, and muddy waters. Their skills in vehicle handling will determine their qualification for the next round. It had been raining continuously the past few days and the stages have turned into mud pits.
“In this unique Performance Run Media Road Tripevent, we are thrilled to showcase the performance of TriAction Advantage in Petron Turbo Diesel Euro 5 during the tough 4×4 off-roading competition. This is our fourth collaboration with RFC, fueling the globally recognized race and underscoring the capability of our technologically-advanced Petron Turbo Diesel Euro 5, which delivers better power, excellent engine protection, and better mileage,” said Choong Kum Choy, Head of Retail and Commercial Business Petron Malaysia.
From the time it first fueled the RFC in 2016, Petron Turbo Diesel Euro 5 has proven to deliver supreme power to 4×4 vehicles. Petron Turbo Diesel Euro 5 is specifically formulated to improve engine performance, ensure better fuel economy, and extend engine life. The fuel also provides improved ignition quality and protection against corrosion. With a very low sulphur content of 10 parts per million, it is 50 times cleaner than Euro 2M diesel, which helps to reduce exhaust emissions.
The underlying formulation of Petron Turbo Diesel Euro 5 performance is its TriAction Advantage premium additives. It contains detergents to help keep the engine inlet system clean, and a friction modifier that helps to reduce friction between the piston and cylinder wall.
“In a race where skills and machines are competing against nature, the right fuel will help vehicles to achieve superior performance to win. We hope to share some of this experience with the media during this Performance Run Media Road Trip,” Choong adds.
Meanwhile, Luis J.A. Wee, founder and creator of the Rainforest Trophy emphasized the challenges of this year’s competition: “The focus on full racing aspects this year will be tough as teams will try to overcome 50 Special Stages (SS). Only the best combination of man and machine, plus the right fuel and engine oil will propel the teams for a podium finish.”
The stages of the race have names like Predator, Terminator, and Twilight Zone and includes navigating the endless steep downhills and uphills, crossing V gullies, tropical swamps, and steering around the brown-red mud pools. In between, vehicles will stop over at Petron service stations in Kota Bahru, Pasir Putih, Laloh and Gua Musang for refueling before continuing their journey into Kelantan’s tough and rough off-road ex-logging trails.
Petron Turbo Diesel Euro 5 is available at over 190 stations in Peninsular Malaysia and the company plans to roll it out to more locations in the coming months, so stay tuned for updates.
The annual Petron TriAction Advantage Performance Run Media Road Trip is organised as an exclusive event for members of the media to experience the world-class products of Petron as well as the personalized services at Petron service stations. The first Petron Road Trip was held in 2015, following the introduction of the Petron Blaze 97 Euro 4M petrol.
L-R: Jaclyn Loy, Chief Operating Officer, Tan Chong Industrial Equipment Sdn Bhd; Mohamed Firdaus Bin Shahrudin, UPC Chemicals (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, winner of 'Best Pre-Drive Inspection' category; Khairul Nafsha Bin Ishak, Setia Maju Jaya Logistik Sdn Bhd, Ultimate Driver (Champion) of UDEMC Malaysia Final 2019 and winner of 'Best Driving Skill' category; Mohd Azli Bin Mohd Nor, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, winner of 'Best Fuel Efficiency' category; & Steve Hedouin, Managing Director, UD Trucks Hub Malaysia.
The 4th UD Trucks Extra Mile Challenge – Malaysia Round has concluded and the ultimate truck driver who had demonstrated the best skills for smart logistics has been picked from among the 10 finalists. Khairul Nafsha Bin Ishak, a 36-year-old truck driver with Setia Maju Jaya Logistik Sdn Bhd will represent Malaysia at the UD Trucks Extra Mile Challenge (UDEMC) Global Final in Japan in early 2020.
This is the second consecutive year that a driver from Setia Maju Jaya Logistik Sdn Bhd has won the Malaysia round of UDEMC. And by qualifying for the Global Final, Khairul has more training to do to hone his skills and compete against the best from other countries next year.
Khairul’s win comes after a two-month-long pre-selection competition round which saw him battle it out with other truck drivers from all over Malaysia. Jointly organized by UD Trucks and its sole distributor partner in Malaysia, Tan Chong Industrial Equipment Sdn Bhd (TCIE), the UDEMC is an annual competition which is part of UD Trucks’ vision for smart logistics. It is a friendly drivers competition aimed at increasing drivers’ competency through skills and knowledge enhancement and maximizing the capability of the UD Quester heavy-duty truck.
The Malaysia round of the competition involved participants going through the actual truck operation cycle where the drivers are assessed in the three key areas i.e. pre-driving inspection, fuel efficiency and safe driving, in addition to manoeuvring and parking. Contestants compete using the UD Quester heavy-duty truck (the same will be used in Japan) and are measured on their effectiveness in operational cost, the ability to reduce downtime and safe and skilled driving.
The key purpose of the competition structure is to simulate a general transportation cycle and to visualize profitable operation through avoiding downtime, maintaining low-cost operation, preventing accidents and ensuring shorter trip time through efficient driving. All these will link the driver’s skills to business reality. Hence, this competition isn’t just about testing the driver but to train the driver in managing the truck as a profit centre.
“At UD Trucks, we believe that societies depend on logistics to function and vice versa. In the midst of this, truck drivers are the enablers and the backbone of the industry. Thus, the UDEMC is designed with the driver in mind, demonstrating our commitment to improving driver education and motivation, while giving recognition to the unsung heroes of smart logistics,” said Steve Hedouin, Managing Director Hub Malaysia, UD Trucks.
Jaclyn Loy, Chief Operating Officer, TCIE added, “UDEMC is one-of-its-kind competition that benefits both truck driver and company. Since we started few years ago, UDEMC has received very encouraging response from our customers. This is a sign that our brand promise of going the extra mile to provide optimum support to our clients in terms of driver improvement and aftermarket support are valuable and beneficial to them.”
In addition to winning the championship, Khairul also scored the best marks in the “Best Driving Skill” category. Two other drivers won in the other categories: Mohamed Firdaus Bin Shahrudin, 33, from UPC Chemicals (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd won the “Best Pre-Drive Inspection” category, and Mohd Azli Bin Mohd Nor, 37, from Tenaga Nasional Berhad won the “Best Fuel Efficiency” category.
Khairul Nafsha has been a truck driver for 11 years but started driving the UD Quester only two years ago. “My experience driving UD Quester has been excellent as I find it powerful with great drivability because of its advanced technology and safety features. There is a Real Time Fuel Coach feature which I really like because it guides me to achieve better fuel consumption. With this, I use less fuel per trip and hence bring better profits for the company. The cabin is also spacious and comfortable, which helps reduce my fatigue during long distance assignments”.
“For me as a truck driver who spends so much time on the road and away from my family, it’s important that I drive a reliable truck to help me accomplish my long-distance assignments and ensure the cargo delivery to customer is in good condition and on time. This will allow me to save costs in terms of time, energy and fuel. With consistent truck uptime, I am able to spend more time with my family too,” said Khairul who is a devoted father of three children.
L-R: Kenny Kuah Hong Hoe, Managing Director, Setia Maju Jaya Logistik Sdn Bhd; Jaclyn Loy; Khairul Nafsha Bin Ishak; Steve Hedouin; & Muhammad Khairul bin Abd Halim of Setia Maju Jaya Logistik Sdn Bhd – UDEMC Malaysia Final 2018 Winner and Ambassador.
Thrilled with his win, Khairul is even more excited about his upcoming trip to Japan in a few months’ time for the UDEMC Global Final. “This will be the first time ever that I am going overseas, and to represent Malaysia in this competition is truly an honor for me. I have gained so much learnings from UDEMC and acquired more knowledge and awareness of my role as a truck driver. There is a deeper sense of pride in me now. Definitely will share my fantastic experience with my other colleagues too,” he shared.
Besides winning an all-expense-paid trip to Japan, Khairul also won a Quester Parts & Service voucher worth RM2,000, RM500 for winning “Best Driving Skill” category and an exclusive driver training session for all the drivers from Setia Maju Jaya Logistik Sdn Bhd.
Meanwhile, the other winners were presented with a Quester Parts & Service voucher worth RM500 each.
