Hino Motors Sales (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (HMSM) and partner, Jong Seng Sdn Bhd, have upgraded the Hino 1S centre in Sibu into a new 3S (Sales, Service, and Spare Parts) centre. This move is part of Hino’s commitment to providing comprehensive support to its customers, and addressing their evolving needs with a one-stop solution.

Jong Seng Sdn Bhd, established in 1980, has been a trusted Hino Authorised Dealer with multiple sales and service outlets across Sarawak. The decision to upgrade the Sibu 1S centre to a 3S centre was driven by increasing customer demand for service and maintenance in Sibu and its surrounding areas. With this upgrade, Jong Seng can now offer a comprehensive range of services, including vehicle sales, spare parts, repair facilities, and vehicle inspection capabilities, all under one roof.

The newly upgraded 3S centre has been strategically relocated near its previous premises to better serve the surrounding industrial area. Designed to reflect Hino’s Japanese-inspired ideals and corporate identity guidelines, the centre includes a 1,200 sq. ft. office area and a 2,400 sq. ft. warehouse. It is equipped with 6 service bays capable of handling at least 3 service intakes per day, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery.

The new 3S centre was officially opened by HMSM Managing Director Hiroshi Takahashi, Director Ahmad Yasmin bin Yahya, and Operating Officer Chan Ing Chyi, along with Jong Seng Sdn Bhd’s Chairman Yong Chee Kui, Managing Director Yong Chin Nen, and Director Jong See Fong.

“At Hino, customers are at the heart of everything we do. Jong Seng, previously a 1S dealer, already had a loyal customer base. By upgrading to a 3S centre, we can now offer more services in sales, service, and spare parts in Sibu. This upgrade aims to boost customer confidence in purchasing and maintaining Hino vehicles,” said HMSM Managing Director, Hiroshi Takahashi who highlighted the importance of being customer-centric. By now, many motorists have spotted the new AwAS cameras on the ELITE highway (KM28.4 Northbound; KM17 Southbound). Or, you might not have noticed them because they’re basically skinny black poles on the side of the highway, as opposed to the more visible white / grey boxes of the old AES (Automated Enforcement System) cameras. This however, opens the debate on the purpose of the cameras which are said to be a deterrent to speeding. But if you’re not aware of them then….AwAS Camera_Speeding_Enforcement

But as with anything that uses technology, the AwAS (Automated Awareness Safety System) cameras are a big upgrade from the old AES cameras which are considered outdated and apparently no longer supported. You can be sure the upgraded AwAS camera is more advanced than its predecessor. The new system is supposed to incorporate features such as Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology which boosts their accuracy and efficiency in identifying vehicles that breach speed limits or run red lights. Furthermore, the new cameras have high-resolution imaging for both day and night monitoring, and can offer 360-degree surveillance. So even if the camera is on the opposite side of the highway, you can’t really guarantee it’s not spotting your car. Additionally, the new camera poles are modular units and can be outfitted with extra functionalities such as WiFi and city lighting. AwAS Camera_Automated Awareness Safety System

According to JPJ (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan), the AwAS cameras will monitor highways in 8 states. The locations are:
Johor

  • KM151.4 PLUS Highway – Pagoh (Northbound)
  • KM146.8 PLUS Highway – Pagoh (Southbound)
  • KM1 PLUS Highway – Johor Bahru (Northbound)

  • KM174 PLUS Highway – Bandar Baharu (Northbound)

Terengganu

  • KM256.1 LPT2
  • KM288.6 LPT2

Besides the highways, AwAS cameras will also monitor federal routes such as:

  • KM85.5 Jalan Ipoh – Kuala Lumpur : Sungkai
  • KM17 Jalan Gua Musang – Kuala Krai

The AwAS system is also used to monitor intersections for traffic light violations, so think twice before running a red light, or overstepping the white line (to be safe). The announced locations are:

Kuala Lumpur

  • Jalan Klang Lama – Jalan Sepadu
  • Jalan Ipoh (towards Sentul)

Perak

  • Jalan Pasir Puteh
  • KM26 Jalan Ipoh – Kuala Kangsar
  • KM4 Jalan Setiawan – Lumut / Manjung (towards Lumut)

  • KM54 Jalan Alor Setar – Butterworth
  • KM1 Jalan Gurun – Sik / Kuala Muda (towards Gurun)
  • KM1 Jalan Gurun – Sik / Kuala Muda (towards Sik)

There are also several camera sites in Selangor and Putrajaya which are being reevaluated for suitability, according to JPJ. FYI, the penalty for speeding is RM300, and for running a red light, it is either a fine of up to RM2,000 or up to 6 months of jail time.Traffic Light

The stated purpose for upgrading to the AwAS system is to improve road safety and reduce accidents (and fatalities), as well as to ensure motorists adhere to traffic laws. The effectiveness is of course, open to argument but in whichever way you look at it, something needs to be done besides deploying an army of enforcement officers for constant monitoring or setting up inconvenient roadblocks.

According to the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), it has found that there is 99% compliance by motorists to camera systems such as this, and as such deem this method effective. According to the Ministry of Transport, there were around 600,000 road accidents recorded in 2023. Out of these cases, 6,443 lives were lost. This equates to an average of 18 deaths every day. Car_Accident (2)

Besides deterrent systems like speed and traffic cameras, the ministry is also looking to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads. This involves bolstering the public transport network (which is a long term effort) to reduce the frequency of private vehicle usage by owners.

Highlights From The Race Weekend

Round 9 saw intense competition as Mathys Jaubert of TORO Racing took pole position. However, it was Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti from Team Jebsen who initially led the race. A 10-second penalty for Ghiretti ultimately cost him points, allowing Jaubert to claim his first victory in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. The podium was rounded out by Marco Giltrap of Team Porsche New Zealand and Rodrigo Dias Almeida of R&B Racing. Porsche 911_Carrera Cup Asia_Sepang

In the Pro-Am class, Bao Jinlong continued his dominant season with another class victory, securing 4th place overall. Bao’s Phantom Global Racing teammate Zhang Yaqi and Z.SPEED Motorsport’s Li Xuanyu joined him on the podium. In the Am category, Eric Kwong of Bergwerk Motorsport narrowly edged out Munkong Sathienthirakul of EBM for the win, with Henry Kwong of Triple ACE Racing taking 3rd place.

Round 10 featured a record 29-car field under the Sepang lights, creating a spectacular visual spectacle for the fans. Dylan Pereira of Team Shanghai Yonda BWT emerged victorious as he made a swift move from the 3rd row to the lead early in the race. Jaubert and Ghiretti completed the podium, while in the Pro-Am class, Liu Kai Shun of R&B Racing took his first win of the season as a spin by Bao cost him another Pro-Am victory. Eric Zang claimed second for TORO Racing, while Yaqi was a close third.

The Am category witnessed another close battle, with Sathienthirakul besting Eric Kwong by just over half a second. Once again, Henry Kwong crossed the line 3rd.

The Final Race and Endurance Challenge debuted on a wet track, adding an extra challenge for the drivers. Ghiretti seized the lead after an early mistake by polesitter Jaubert. Despite interruptions by two Safety Car deployments, the race provided plenty of action. Nazim Azman initially clinched 3rd place but was later penalized for contact, promoting Martin Ragginger of Porsche Holding to the podium. Porsche Carrera Cup Asia_Sepang International Circuit

Kai Shun continued his excellent form in the Pro-Am class, ahead of Zang and Bao in 3rd. Meanwhile, Eric Kwong overcame Sathienthirakul in the Am category for another dramatic victory. Henry Kwong took up the 3rd podium spot.

With 5 races left of the campaign, Ghiretti continues to lead the championship, 20 points clear of nearest challenger Jaubert. Bao holds a comfortable lead in the Pro-Am class, although there is a close 4-way battle for 2nd behind him. In the Am category, Eric Kwong heads Munkong Sathienthirakul by 21 points heading into the final 2 race weekends of the season.

Jaecoo Malaysia has rolled out the first 500 units of its J7 SUV to dealerships across the country from its assembly plant in Shah Alam. This milestone comes just 3 weeks after the model’s official launch in mid-July, marking a significant step forward for the brand in the Malaysian automotive market.

The journey leading up to this moment has been one of careful planning and strategic execution. Over the past 7 months, Jaecoo Malaysia had been setting up a self-sufficient ecosystem and network to support the launch and distribution of the J7. Its efforts have paid off, with the brand now fulfilling its promise of delivering the first batch of SUVs in the 3rd quarter of the year, well within schedule.

Jaecoo Malaysia_President_Leo Chen“It has been a great year for Jaecoo beginning with an exciting preview period which led to an overwhelmingly positive reception during the official launch of the J7. We are very excited to deliver the first 500 units of our J7, and we are equally excited to place customers in the driver’s seat of Malaysia’s hottest premium off-road SUV,” said Chery Corporate Malaysia Executive Vice President, Leo Chen.

The first 500 units delivered are all the All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) variant of the J7, which has already garnered attention for its competitive pricing of RM148,800. Jaecoo has scheduled delivery of the 2-Wheel-Drive (2WD) variant in the next batch in September. The Jaecoo J7 2WD wears a price tag of RM138,800. Jaecoo’s pricing strategy positions the J7 as ‘attainable luxury’ in the C-segment SUV category. Jaecoo_J7

Emily Lek, Vice President of JAECOO Malaysia, emphasised the brand’s commitment to maintaining a steady delivery momentum. “Our focus is on maintaining a steady momentum of delivering orders for the J7 in the coming months. We are also very happy to share that our network is ready to immerse our customers in the Jaecoo “From Classic, Beyond Classic” premium customer experience, from vehicle handovers to aftersales service”. With the debut of the all-new 3rd-generation Toyota Vios as the standard race car for all teams, the event saw intense competition, unpredictable weather, and the rise of young racing talent. New Car And Challenges

Round 1 saw 33 cars race in a 1-hour endurance format, challenging drivers who were previously accustomed to sprint races. The 2 days of racing over the weekend were marked by both scorching heat and wet conditions, putting both man and machine to the test. The results of Race 1 and Race 2 were combined to give drivers an overall position for Round 1. Out of the total of 33 cars lined up on the grid, 6 were driven by new young drivers in the Rookie Class. This is a testament to the series’ commitment to nurturing emerging talent through the Toyota Gazoo Racing Young Driver Development Programme that helps develop youn talents who are transitioning from simulator racing and karting to saloon car racing. The Vios Challenge is also one of the most lucrative motorsports event in the country, with the top 10 drivers going home with combined prize monies amounting to RM110,000. The top 5 racers in each of the Super Sporting Class (for professional and seeded drivers) and Sporting Class (for amateurs) with RM60,000 and RM50,000 respectively.

Super Sporting Class: Naquib Azlan & Mitchell Cheah Shine

In the Super Sporting Class, Axle Sports driver Naquib Azlan emerged as the overall winner of Round 1, earning RM16,000. Naquib’s consistency paid off with a win in Race 1 and a strong 2nd-place finish in Race 2. However, the top spot in Race 2 was claimed by Prima Pearl TD Racing’s Mitchell Cheah, who crossed the finish line over 11 seconds ahead of Naquib, who was followed by Telagamas Toyota’s Freddie Ang in 3rd.

“I had a great race today. Coming into race 2 today I was very confident because of the conditions (a wet race) and I knew what I had to do but it took a little longer than expected to pull away due to the intense battle for track positions, We started off with an almost fully wet track due to the earlier rain and as the race developed, conditions became better and I slowly built the lead the head of the pack,” said Cheah, the defending Super Sporting Class champion. Cheah finished 4th in Race 1. Toyota Gazoo Racing_Vios Challenge_Super Sporting Class_Round 1_Race 2_2024

“As you know it’s an entirely new car this season and it’ll take some time for everyone to become acclimatized to its characteristics and drive to the vehicle’s full potential. Of course the goal will be to defend my overall championship but we still have a long season ahead,” he added.

Sporting Class: Kenneth Koh Triumphs Despite Adversity

The Sporting Class for amateur drivers saw PCM Group Racing Team’s Kenneth Koh take the overall lead after a strong showing in Race 2, earning him RM14,000. Finishing 3rd in Race 1, Koh redeemed himself with a commanding victory in Race 2, beating BAE Racing by ES Yang’s Teo Hong Zhou who took 2nd, and Race Rally KL’s Shafiq Samsudin in 3rd (who was also Race 1’s winner).

“It was a very tough race due to the slippery conditions but as the track dried up I managed to pull away from the field. Overall, the car felt good and I am just very happy with how the race weekend panned out,” said Koh, who had to overcome a significant challenge after his car was unfortunately damaged during pre-season testing and left the team with less than a month to complete repairs.Toyota Gazoo Racing_Vios Challenge_Sporting Class_Round 1_Race 2_2024

“What happened was extremely unfortunate. Thankfully, the car was not as badly damaged as it looked and all the credit certainly goes to the team for getting it ready in time for me to make it to Round 1 this weekend,” he said. The 2 results combined currently places Koh in the lead of the overall championship and as Round 1 overall champion, he bagged RM14,000 for his efforts over the race weekend.

Rookie Class: Young Talent Takes Center Stage

The Rookie Class saw 18-year-old pro karter Adam Mikail dominate both races, securing back-to-back victories. Despite carrying an additional 20 kg ballast and starting from the back of the grid in Race 2, Adam impressed by finishing ahead of several Sporting Class drivers, securing 10th place overall out of 33. In his class, he pipped recreational karters, Brandon Ho and Amirul Afiq to claim his win.

“Due to yesterday’s race win I had to carry an extra 20 kg weight ballast in the car and the reverse grid format mean that I had to also start from the back of the grid. I was a bit concerned whether I would be able to pass the front cars but I had good pace coming into the race and to my surprise as the race unfolded I found myself mixing it up with the Sporting Class drivers,” said Adam. Toyota Gazoo Racing_Vios Challenge_Rookie Class_Round 1_Race 2_2024

The Rookie Class also features promising talents like 17-year-old pro karter Audrey Leong, 21-year-old simulator racer Raja Amirul, and 19-year-old recreational karter Kingston Tan, all competing in their first saloon car racing season.

A Bright Future For The Series

Season 7 of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Challenge is offering a total prize pool of RM630,000, making it the most lucrative motorsports series in Malaysia. With nearly 30 million online viewers and 220,000 on-ground spectators since its inception in 2017, the series continues to grow in popularity.

The excitement continues with Round 2 scheduled for 27 – 29 September 2024 at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the drivers as they battle for supremacy in one of Malaysia’s most thrilling racing series.

In a move to reestablish its presence in Sarawak, MAN Malaysia recently made visits to key locations in the state i.e. Kuching, Bintulu, and Sibu. This visit marks a renewed focus on the Sarawak market, where MAN Trucks had once enjoyed success, with nearly 190 trucks sold between 2005 and 2013.

During at stop in Kuching, the MAN Malaysia team paid a courtesy visit to an old customer whose fleet of MAN CLA medium- and heavy-duty trucks had served reliably for over a decade. Despite the fleet’s decommissioning, the team was met with positive feedback, including praise from one driver who highlighted the truck’s impressive pulling power on hilly terrain, powered by a modest 6.8L engine.
