Lexus rolls out new LX 570 and GS 200t at Pebble Beach

The ongoing Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance, held at the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links in California, witnesses the debut of two updated Lexus models with the facelifted LX 570 and the turbocharged GS 200t sedan both making their first global public appearances.

Derived from the concurrent Toyota Land Cruiser, the heavily-updated LX 570 retains only the door panels and roof of the outgoing model, with all other sheet metal having been re-sculpted. Its restyled front end boasts Lexus’ trademark spindle grille flanked by LED headlights, sequential turn signals, and fog lights on either side.

Power continues to come from the existing 5.7-litre V8 petrol engine, but hooked to it now is a new eight-speed automatic transmission that replaces the previous six-speed unit. Settings for the engine and suspension are adjustable via a Drive Mode Select system. Equipment highlights include a redesigned luxury interior featuring an updated multimedia system with 12.3-inch screen and Remote Touch Interface.

Of greater interest to us is the new 2.0-litre turbocharged GS 200t, which will ultimately replace the naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre V6 GS 250 in the line-up. Powered by the new 8AR engine that debuted in the NX 200t, the GS 200t has claimed outputs of 241hp and 350Nm, competitive numbers when stacked against the 245hp BMW 528i and 211hp Mercedes-Benz E 250, as well as being a significant improvement over the 206hp/253Nm GS 250.

As with the GS 250, drive goes astern in the GS 200t, but with a new 8-speed automatic transmission replacing the 250’s six-speeder.

Appearance-wise, the GS has been grafted with a restyled front end with an even bolder interpretation of Lexus’ spindle grille design completed with Bi-LED headlights, and revised tail lamps and rear bumper treatments.

Improved safety is offered in the Standard Lexus Safety System +, which combines Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Intelligent High Beam (IHB) and All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Upgraded multimedia technology now adds side “enter” buttons on Remote Touch Interface (RTI) and full screen map capability for available navigation with 12.3-inch central display screen.
