ASEAN NCAP announces results of four models
The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) moves on from its pilot phase testing vehicles in phases to regular testing, with results published almost immediately upon conclusion of crash data analysis.
In its recently-published Quarter III 2014 August release, ASEAN NCAP announced the results of four cars that recently underwent testing under the programme, namely the Tata Vista, Perodua Axia, Honda City, and Honda Jazz.
As before, results of the ASEAN NCAP, obtained by analysis of a vehicle’s performance in a 64kph frontal offset crash test, is presented in two components – adult occupant protection and child occupant protection, each with a maximum score of five stars. The presence of electronic stability control is specified as pre-requisite for a five-star rating. Side impact testing was introduced effective September 2013 as pre-requisite for a four star rating.
Unlike the relatively homogeneous European market, ASEAN is a much varied playing ground with conditions, regulations, and consumers varying significantly from country to country. This is one major challenge in ASEAN NCAP’s objective of creating a standardized rating system applicable across the region as baseline specifications of many entry to mid-range models can be significantly different.
To this end, ASEAN NCAP gives certain vehicles dual ratings; a number of vehicles are given five-star ratings conditional upon the variant being fitted with electronic stability control (ESC). The Toyota Corolla Altis, Honda CR-V, and Chevrolet Colorado are three models that have received dual ratings, and joining them in the recent batch of results are the Honda City and Honda Jazz, both of which are rated five-star for adult occupant protection conditional upon them fitted with ESC. Variants without ESC make do with only four stars. Both cars also scored four stars for child occupant protection. It was also disclosed that the City’s adult protection score of 15.80 points is the highest ever achieved in ASEAN NCAP, beating the Ford Fiesta’s previous record of 15.73.
In other results, the soon-to-be-launched Perodua Axia scored four stars each for adult and child occupant protection respectively, whilst the Indian-made Tata Vista, a model sold only in Indonesia and Myanmar, is rated three stars for both adult and child protection.
In a separate development, ASEAN NCAP yesterday organized its inaugural Grand Prix Awards at Kuching honouring the top achieving cars for adult and child occupant protection based on category. Special mentions were also given for best supporting media contributions to paultan.org and CBT, safety technology award to Honda LaneWatch found in the Accord 2.4, and OEM supplier to Bosch.
