“Recognising the urgency for Malaysia’s shift to sustainable energy, we are fuelled by global commitments and the potential for economic diversification and energy security. Malaysia, being recognised as the best country in Southeast Asia in the Energy Transition Index 2023 by the World Economic Forum, is on the right track to becoming a regional leader in energy transition. Toyota’s innovative efforts in clean energy, through its diverse approach, align seamlessly with our national goals,” said YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry who officiated the event and commended UMWT for its commitment to sustainable practices and environmental conservation.

“We acknowledge the diverse challenges and opportunities across nations as we champion a multi-pathway approach and implement appropriate life-cycle actions to align with each country’s national interest and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recognising the uniqueness of Malaysia’s automotive industry landscape, positioned as a major electrical and electronics manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia, is crucial to position ourselves appropriately in this journey,” commented Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMWT.

The Beyond Zero event highlights Toyota’s diverse approach with various electrification technologies, including Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Battery Electric Vehicles, and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles, showcasing advanced automotive sustainability and design aimed at reducing environmental impact.

UMWT’s Hybrid Electric Vehicles, with a significant presence in the Malaysian market, demonstrates proven reliability since 2009. With over 41,600 Toyota HEVs sold in Malaysia, UMWT’s efforts have contributed commendably to decarbonization efforts, of approximately 150,000 tons of CO2 absorption which is equivalent to planting 500,000 trees. This reduction in CO2 was achieved without any need for large scale infrastructure investment nor change in behaviour of customers. Toyota Prius_Corolla Cross

In addition to HEVs, UMWT is also showcasing Battery Electric Vehicles and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles for the first time, including stylish models like the bZ4X, Hilux BEV and innovative solutions like the 2-seater C+pod for urban mobility. On the Fuel Cell side, Toyota has practical examples like the Toyota Mirai FCEV which exemplify technological innovation and dynamic performance, making use of hydrogen to generate electricity, and contributing to a cleaner automotive future. Other FCEV examples include GranAce FCEV and Hilux FCEV. Additionally, the SORA bus, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, showcases Toyota’s commitment to sustainable commercial solutions. Toyota’s investment over 30 years in fuel cell technology has culminated in hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, offering zero-emission journeys with advantages in refueling time and driving distance. The reaction of hydrogen with oxygen generates electricity to power the vehicle, with water forming as an emission. Toyota also sees the advantage of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles in the commercial sector as refuelling takes 10 minutes or less, and offers a longer driving distance.
