Nissan To Launch e-POWER Model In Malaysia By Q4 2024
Nissan is set to introduce a new e-POWER model in Malaysia by Q4 2024. This model will bring a unique blend of EV performance with the practicality of an EV hybrid, offering a practical option to Malaysian consumers who are seeking advanced technology without the challenges associated with BEV (battery electric vehicle) ownership currently. As the country navigates its electrification journey, e-POWER represents a step forward with no compromises. The e-POWER concept was showcased at the recent Malaysia Autoshow 2024 in May.
In 2005, Nissan started on a long-term journey toward carbon neutrality, focusing on BEVs and electric motor-driven systems powered by alternative energy sources. This vision materialised with the 2010 launch of the all-electric Nissan LEAF, the world’s first mass-produced BEV. Nissan later introduced e-POWER models as a cornerstone of its electrification strategy, merging fuel efficiency with the EV experience. In 2016, the Nissan Note e-POWER was the top seller in the Japanese domestic market.
Understanding Nissan’s e-POWER Technology
e-POWER is not your typical hybrid. Unlike conventional hybrids, where a petrol engine primarily drives the wheels with occasional electrical assistance, Nissan’s e-POWER vehicle is powered entirely by an electric motor, making it essentially, an EV. The petrol engine within the vehicle only serves as a generator to charge the vehicle’s Lithium-ion battery which is used to power the electric motor and turn the wheels. This configuration allows e-POWER to deliver the smooth, responsive performance of an EV, characterised by instant torque and quiet operation, without relying on external charging. In essence, a self-charging EV, if you will.
In a world increasingly dominated by BEVs, e-POWER stands out as an innovative alternative. It offers the driving dynamics of an EV without the drawbacks of range anxiety or the need for external charging. Nissan’s e-Pedal Step energy regeneration system also contributes to class-leading efficiency, making e-POWER an appealing choice for markets like Malaysia that may not yet be ready for full BEV adoption.
Key Innovations In e-POWER
Nissan engineers incorporated components from the LEAF, including its inverter and advanced control systems, to capture the essence of electric drive in e-POWER. This system is distinct from other hybrids in terms of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) control. The petrol engine in e-POWER operates only at its most efficient points, ensuring that its operation is nearly silent and minimally intrusive. Additionally, the engine would come on in phases when the ambient noise is high (e.g. cruising at highway) so that the operation is masked acoustically.
When maximum power is needed, e-POWER’s engine can simultaneously supply power to the electric motor and charge the battery. This capability ensures sustained performance without the need for a large battery, making e-POWER vehicles lighter and more efficiently packaged than traditional hybrids. Additionally, e-POWER eliminates the need for a traditional transmission, further reducing weight and maintenance costs.
