Locally Assembled Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric Launched In Malaysia
Volvo Car Malaysia has launched the locally assembled Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric, its first-ever electric-only SUV. The launch of the C40 Recharge Pure Electric follows the successful launch of the company’s first pure electric offering in Malaysia, the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, in March 2022. The company is now taking orders for the 2023 XC40 facelift as it had exhausted stocks of the 2022 model.
The C40 is virtually identical to the XC40, with the main differences in height due to the C40’s coupe design. This compact SUV is designed for customers looking for an edgier design, electrification as well as cutting-edge technology. The C40 is powered by a full electric powertrain with the dual motors on either axle providing a total output of 408 hp and 660 Nm of torque, and enabling it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds*, officially slightly faster than the XC40. Furthermore, the C40 has a driving range of over 450 km* on a single charge, also slightly improved from the XC40’s 418 km. The battery can charge up to 80% State-of-Charge in 28 minutes**.
At the official launch, Charles Frump, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, also made major announcements to highlight the company’s commitment to electrification.
- Volvo Car Malaysia is committed towards its sustainability ambition and on track to becoming a fully electric car company by 2030 and aims for 75% of its sales to come from the Recharge Pure Electric line-up by 2025;
- The Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric is the second luxury electric vehicle to be assembled locally; and
- The introduction of the ‘Online Sales’ platform will enable customers to directly make a purchase with Volvo Car Malaysia and securely make their payments online. The company intends to ride on the rapid wave of digitalisation and growing online affinity of luxury consumers in Malaysia.
With the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric, Volvo Car Malaysia is a step closer to its vision of having a fully electric line-up by 2030 and becoming a climate-neutral company by 2040. In Malaysia, the brand expects electric vehicles to make up 75% of its portfolio by 2025, compared to its global goal of 50% by then.
Volvo Cars also recently announced that it has joined the ‘Accelerating to Zero Coalition’, an effort to enhance the transition to zero-emission mobility which was launched at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Incidentally, Volvo Cars is also the first car maker to take up the SteelZero initiative where it aims to accelerate the transition to carbon neutrality in the global steel industry by increasing the demand for fossil-free steel. These efforts reflect its global ambition of sustainability and Volvo Cars intends to influence the pace of the automotive industry’s transition to full electrification.
“Our heritage of safety and sustainability is elevated by the electrification milestones we have achieved thus far, especially here in Malaysia where we have encouraged many to adapt a more sustainable driving experience. Today, we bring the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric, an embodiment of everything we stand for – 100% electric with zero tailpipe emissions. It’s a true electric vehicle, designed to provide a new sustainable mobility experience,” Frump commented.
Volvo Car Malaysia also marked history with the introduction of its ‘Online Sales’ platform, the company’s first ever initiative to sell cars directly to its customers in Malaysia. The Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric will be available via an e-commerce platform that would enable customers to make bookings and payments directly to Volvo Car Malaysia on the company’s official website www.volvocars.com/my. The ‘Online Sales’ platform will be instrumental in assisting the company’s nationwide retailers in delivering an outstanding Swedish luxury experience to all the customers.
“Our customers’ journey to owning a Volvo will be seamless from hereon, and one that is in-line with our hassle-free price. Together with our authorised dealers, the ‘Online Sales’ platform will enhance the buying experience of every customer,” concluded Frump.
