BMW Malaysia Accepting Online Bookings For All-New XM High Performance Electric SAV
BMW Malaysia is accepting online bookings for its all-new BMW XM high-performance electric SAV. The online bookings will start from 20 October 2022. This model is the first BMW M take on a performance luxury SAV with electrified drive. Incidentally, this year is BMW M GmbH’s 50th anniversary.
The BMW XM is currently in the final stages of development, with production expected to commence in December 2022 in its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. This is a significant model for the performance division as this is the first time since the legendary BMW M1 in the 1970s that BMW M GmbH is presenting an independently-developed production model.
This Sports Activity Vehicle measures 5,100 mm in length, 2,005 mm in width and 1,755 mm in height, and rests on a wheelbase measuring 3,105 mm. Cargo volume for the XM is 527 litres, and is expandable to 1,820 litres.
The XM features the M Aerodynamics Package and M High-Gloss Shadow Line, with Extended Contents available for the Shadow Line profile. Adaptive LED headlights with High-beam Assistant are also included as standard.
The large kidney grille bears the hallmark M horizontal double louvres and furnished with illuminated kidney grille contours. Above it, sits 2 power domes as part of the sculpted bonnet. Flanking the grilles are slender LED headlights which are split into 2 separate modules, one each for daytime running lights and low / high beam.
The Night Gold Line has a nightgold-coloured trim strip running parallel to the window line to enhance the side profile; the Shadow Line has a shadow line for that effect. The Night Gold Line sports 23″ M Star Spoke 923 M wheels in Bicolour Nightgold while the Shadow Line gets 23″ M Law Star Spoke 923 M in Bicolour Black.
And as with every BMW M model, the XM features a pair of twin tailpipes that are vertically stacked and hexagonal in shape.
Inside, you will see interior trim finishers in carbon fibre, and notably, the BMW Curved Display which consists of an Information Display and a high-resolution touchscreen Control Display. Visually denoting the M status of the SAV are the M Leather Steering Wheel, M Seat Belts and M Multifunctional Seats.
Besides that, there is new vintage leather in Coffee Brown on the door panels as well as the upper sections of the instrument panel, enhanced by a special finishing process that brings out the natural characteristics of the Walknappa leather.
For greater comfort, active seat ventilation and a 4-zone automatic air conditioning control are included. Massage function is also available for the driver and front passenger. Moreover, the ambient lighting and BMW Iconic Sounds Electric further enhance the cabin atmosphere, with in-car entertainment provided by the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System.
At the rear of the cabin, the M Lounge provides a bold contrast to the cockpit. First-class seating comfort is ensured by a full-width rear seat bench that curves and encloses the passengers. Meanwhile, sophisticated upholstery lends the space an exclusive lounge feel. The Alcantara headliner with its prismatic 3D structure also creates a visual highlight that contributes to a unique and luxurious sense of space.
The BMW XM comes with the BMW M HYBRID drive system i.e. a plug-in hybrid system combining an internal combustion engine (with 360 kw / 489 hp; maximum torque of 650 Nm) with an electric motor for both power and efficiency. At its unveiling, the BMW XM comes exclusively with the M HYBRID technology, based on an all-new 4.4L M TwinPower Turbo V8. And with the flap-controlled sports exhaust system, a striking soundscape to perfectly match the vehicle’s extroverted character is created.
Total powertrain output is rated at 480 kW / 653 hp and 800 Nm of torque, delivered via an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission, and enabling a 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 4.3 seconds; inclusive of Launch Control. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h (270 km/h with the M Driver’s package, which is included as standard), while electric top speed is capped at 140 km/h.
The intelligent M xDrive all-wheel drive system comes standard and besides the basic 4WD setting, drivers can select the 4WD Sport mode, which is rear-biased, and 4WD Sand mode which optimises traction for driving on loose surfaces. With Adaptive M Suspension Professional as standard, the XM is equipped with electronically controlled dampers and features Active Roll Stabilisation that reduces lateral body movement, for improved cornering agility. This is further aided by the Integral Active Steering which turns the rear wheels in tandem with the front wheels at higher speeds. At lower speeds, the rear wheels will instead steer in the opposite direction of the front wheels to improve manoeuvrability.
In addition to the vehicle’s low centre of gravity, advanced control systems such as the actuator-based wheel slip limitation also contribute to the dynamic handling. Braking force comes from the standard M Sport brakes in Black High-Gloss, with 508 mm compound brake discs on the front axle.
The notable features for the driver include the BMW Live Cockpit Professional which features a 12.3″
Information Display, the 14.9″ Control Display and the BMW Head-Up Display. Together with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the M specific BMW Operating System 8 enables intuitive control of vehicle functions using natural speech.
Other key digital features include BMW ID, which ensures personalised settings are loaded as soon as the vehicle is unlocked; BMW Gesture Control, which enhances communication with the car by enabling the use of defined gestures to operate certain functions; Connected Package Professional I; Intelligent Emergency Call; Teleservices; Connected Drive Services and Smartphone Integration (Apple CarPlay / Android Auto).
Furthermore, the Comfort Access function can recognise the vehicle’s key from a distance and unlock the doors automatically, offering greater convenience. Alternatively, drivers can also use their smart device (if compatible) as a contactless key with the BMW Digital Key Plus feature, enabling them to automatically unlock their vehicle door when approaching the vehicle.
For driving and safety assistance, the XM is equipped with Driving Assistant Professional, which includes features such as Distance Control (ACC), automatic Speed Limit Assist, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Lane Change Assistant, Lane Keeping Assistant, Lane Change Warning, Front / Rear Crossing-traffic Warning, Rear Collision Prevention and Exit Warning when opening the doors, Emergency Stop Assistant, Evasion Assistant, Emergency Corridor Assistant and Priority Warning. Additionally, the standard Parking Assistant Plus includes Reversing Assist Camera, Lateral Parking Aid, Park Assist, Active Park Distance Control, Reversing Assistant, Parking View, Surround View system, Remote 3D View, Drive Recorder and Anti-theft Recorder. Other safety features include the Attentiveness Assistant, Acoustic Protection for Pedestrians and Active Protection.
On the electric side of things, the high-voltage battery is located within the vehicle floor for better stability and weight distribution. This 25.7 kWh (net) battery provides an electric range of up to 88 km. It can be charged at up to 7.4 kW at any AC charging station, and needs 4 hours and 15 minutes for a complete charge (from 0% to 100%).
