A new luxury 7-seater MPV is in town to woo professionals and urban families away from the conventional choices. Hyundai’s all-new Staria Premium was just launched in Malaysia by Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors.

The Hyundai Staria is the first of Hyundai’s Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBV) representing the brand’s vision for future mobility and its evolution into a Smart Mobility Solution provider. Hyundai’s Smart Mobility Solution is a response to the shift in consumer needs. The PBV is designed to offer consumers purposeful, innovative features which redefines in-car travel experience as per the company’s vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’.

As such, the Hyundai Staria looks like none that has come before. It wears Hyundai’s new design language of being futuristic and iconic. The sleek, clean profile of the exterior is defined by a single curved line drawn from the front to the rear, which is inspired by the curve of light that illuminates the Earth’s horizon when viewed from space. No surprise that to some, the Staria resembles something spaceship-like.

The Staria’s fascia is shared by a clean expanse of metal that houses a horizontal strip of daytime running lights / positioning lamps, and a bold, wide front grille below it that is home to the headlights and turn indicators. Obvious from the side is the low beltline which affords for a more expansive glasshouse for occupants to feel the spaciousness of the cabin. This is also helped by a pair of sunroofs.

Space is a priority for the cabin, accentuated by premium offerings such as Nappa leather seats and a suede finish on the doorcards and interior trim. The 2nd row are a pair of large captain seats for that luxurious feel, while the 3rd row seats 3 quite comfortably. The captain seats feature one-touch relaxation position, side support headrests to reduce fatigue, powered leg rest, and heating / ventilation. Additionally, rear passengers get a single-zone climate control with 4 roof air vents and 4 floor vents. There are also rear curtains for privacy and USB ports for convenience.

Both rows of rear seats can slide by 300 mm to adjust for space flexibility; the captain seats can also be moved sideways to widen the walk-through lane. When both rows are pushed forward, there is a cargo volume of 431 litres. The 3rd row seat bench can also be tipped up or have its backrest folded depending on how you want to load the cargo. Maximum cargo space is nearly 5,000 litres should you need it. This is the result of a long 3,273 mm wheelbase and a vehicle length of 5,253 mm. Other comfort features include a smart powered tailgate and smart powered sliding doors which detect the proximity of the key fob.

Up in front, the driver and front passenger seats are designed to offer a feeling of space and comfort. These seats are also equipped with heating and ventilation feature. The infotainment unit has an 8″ touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, and is connected to a Bose premium sound system. The simple interior layout focuses only on the essentials to provide more room and flexibility, such as the glove compartment which has been moved forward to provide extra legroom. There is however, no walk-through from the 1st row to the rear.

The Hyundai Staria Premium is powered by a 2.2L CRDi turbo diesel engine. The newly improved diesel engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, and gives out 177 PS @ 3,800 rpm and 431 Nm of torque @ 1,500 – 2,500 rpm. Its high-efficiency, air-cooled turbocharger has an improved compressor and turbine wheel performance for better low speed torque performance. Also, the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) is an aluminium unit which saves on weight to aid fuel economy. The Staria sits on 18″ wheels.

There are 2 exterior accent trims to choose i.e. Tinted Brass Chrome and Dark Grey. The choice of trim covers the exterior Hyundai emblem, front grille, wing mirrors, door handles, headlight surround, and wheels. The exterior body colour choices available for the former accent trim choice are Cream White, Abyss Black Pearl, and Shimmering Silver Metallic. On the other hand the choices for the latter trim are Cream White, Graphite Grey Metallic, Moonlight Blue Pearl, Abyss Black Pearl, Shimmering Silver Metallic, Olivine Grey Metallic and Gaia Brown Pearl. Meanwhile, the interior Nappa leather colours come in Black, Brown, Blue and Grey.

The Hyundai Staria Premium is a fully imported unit from South Korea and is now open for booking at all Hyundai authorised showrooms. It is priced from RM358,888. You can also book online via Hyundai’s new online shopping platform – Cl!ck to Buy (www.hyundai.com.my/clicktobuy/).
