Honda begins automobile production in Nigeria
Honda’s motorcycle plant in Nigeria, which began operations in 1980, has just been expanded to handle automobile production, with production of the Accord at the plant having started on 10 July 2015. With an annual production capacity of 1,000 units, the plant is Honda’s first automobile production facility in the whole of Africa.
Despite its lengthy motorcycle presence in the West African nation, Honda had only established an official automobile subsidiary at Nigeria as recently as in 2013. Its setting up of the Nigeria plant is part of the company’s expansion plans in Africa that also included the setting up of its South Africa subsidiary in 2000 and Kenya in December 2011, followed by the establishment of a motorcycle production and sales subsidiary in March 2013.
