Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has officially added a new member to its Triton pick-up truck range. Replacing the 3.2-litre model is the new 2.5-litre Triton VGT assuming the role of range flagship. As its name suggests, the new Triton VGT is powered by the same engine found in the Pajero Sport VGT, also introduced recently.

Vital statistics of the engine are therefore identical to the Pajero Sport VGT, meaning that the driver has access to 176hp @ 4,000rpm and 350Nm @ 1,800 – 3,500rpm. The engine is paired to a 5-speed automatic transmission, and power goes to the road via Mitsubishi’s Easy Select 4WD system that allows 2WD-4WD ‘shift on the fly’ at speeds of up to 100kph.

Aesthetics-wise, the Triton VGT gets a front bumper extender, matte black roll bar and sporty 17-inch alloy wheels. Additional equipment to humour the owner who has paid more include Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, front corner sensors, and the RV meter displaying travel data such as range, average speed, fuel consumption and also a digital compass, barometer, altimeter and outer temperature.

MMM currently sells almost 700 Tritons a month and it expects to sell about 250 units per month for the VGT model alone. Last year, the company sold a total of 8,299 Tritons, accounting for 18.9% market share for the pick-up truck segment. From that total, East Malaysian buyers accounted for 1,641 units, up from 1,504 in 2010. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia expects to sell 250 units of Triton VGT per month. At present, MMM is selling close to 700 units (all Triton variants) per month. The company expects increase sales of the Triton by 20% and aims to increase its market share to 22% this year.

“The Triton, widely acknowledged as one of the best handling pick-up trucks in the market, has been a great success since its debut in Malaysia in 2006. The Triton created a new trend with the bold ruggedness of a powerful engine combined with original styling, ride comfort, spacious cabin, and enhanced safety features. And to date, it has found more than 30,000 proud owners. Being the most powerful in its class, the new Triton VGT is set to increase the Triton’s popularity,” said Tetsuya Oda, Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

The new Triton VGT will complement the current Triton line-up, consisting of the Triton 2.5 4×4 A/T & M/T, Triton Standard 2.5 4×4 M/T and Triton Lite 2.5 4×2 manual. Available in three colors, White Solid, Black Mica and Cool Silver Metallic, the fully imported Triton VGT is priced as follows (on the road inclusive of insurance):
– Peninsula Malaysia: RM105,997.10
– Sarawak: RM105, 812.10
– Sabah: RM105, 721.50
Price inclusive of 3-Year warranty and 2-Year free maintenance package.
