Shell FuelSave Champion walks away with RM50k
For most of us, inculcating an economical driving habit translates to saving a few cents for every kilometre traveled. However, for Johorean Mr Lai Tsuen Yung, his light-footedness on the throttle earned him a RM50,000 cash prize in the Shell 1 Litre Challenge National Finals.
Having won the challenge in Johor state level, 24-year-old Lai joined five other State Winners from Selangor, Penang, Perak, Melaka, and Pahang at National Finals level. All six contestants were handed a set of keys each to a Honda Civic 1.8 and were told to drive along a pre-determined route from the Saujana Hotel to Kota Damansara via the NKVE highway and back to the starting point.
Each of the six cars were provided with a Shell FuelSave monitoring device which calculates the traveled, average speed, average fuel consumption, and elapsed time. Using data tapped from the car’s ECU, it calculates fuel consumption readings relayed back to the driver by a digital display. The readings are then taken down by marshals to determine the winner.
Though it remains to be seen if they produce such figures in their daily drives, the six finalists averaged 19.251 km/l in the contest. Lai managed to clock 21.344 km/l, beating the nearest competitor, En Syamsul Azwan bin Mustar from Malacca, by 0.288 km/l.
Fahrin Ahmad, Shell Malaysia’s FuelSave Ambassador, was at the finale event to share some of Shell’s FuelSave tips also extended his encouragement to the state finalists, “I am proud and impressed by all the participants of this Challenge who have proven that by making the right fuel choice and driving smart motorists can make a real difference to their mileage. In my opinion they are already winners.”

“We have had a terrific response to the Challenge indicating that we are moving a step closer to leading a more sustainable lifestyle by being more fuel efficient motorists. If we can help persuade more people to practice fuel efficient habits, the amount of fuel we could save as a nation would be significant,” Mohzani added.
